Sweet Dreams, Little Cynics!

Everybody keep your voices down so that Daria and Jane can continue celebrating Public Sleeping Day. Or, depending on your mood, get the Sharpies out. Trent probably considers this one of his favorite holidays, or rather he would if he were awake long enough to know what day it is.

This is also National Science Day, so...go do something sciency! In Daria and Jane's case, I'd suggest an in-depth investigation into the purpose of rapid eye movement cycles.

Fanfic Update!
  • #JimToo, by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Jim was in a hospital bed laying on his stomach wearing what appeared to be an adult diaper." (Part 3)

  • Daria Enrolls At Nevermore, by Meester_Lee (part 6): "The bus pulled off the main highway and began to slow down. There was a squeal from the overhead speaker as the driver picked up his microphone, distracting Daria’s attention from a guidebook she’d been leafing through."

  • Whatever Happened to Jake Morgendorffer?, by Two-Eyed Charlie (COMPLETE!): "As the old saying goes, Jake Morgendorffer was dead before he hit the ground. All things considered, that was something of a blessing, given just how hard the ground was and how fast his head had hit it."

Have a Nutty Anniversary!

Dammit, Quinn! Just because it's National Pistachio Day doesn't mean you have to join in! You know you're allergic to the dye. Oh, well. I've heard neck modelling careers are overrated, anyway.

At least this will give Daria some amusement when Tom forgets their completely-arbitrary anniversary again, just like in "Sappy Anniversary." That episode is itself celebrating an anniversary, as it first aired on this day in 2001. Gotta say, I think it would be better for Tom to forget than to give Daria a molten hobbit/eldritch abomination like Jake did.

Through a Beer Darkly

Upchuck is serving up a round of drinks that absolutely no one will take him up on, even if it is World Bartender Day. Not even free booze is worth putting up with that level of smarminess.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Through a Lens Darkly," which aired on this day in 1999. Fortunately, Daria had not been drinking before she went on her driving lesson. If she had, then that poor dog wouldn't have stood a chance, peripheral vision or not.

Fanfic Update!
  • #JimToo, by WildDogJJ (part 1): "Quinn, Nicole, Stacy and Sandi were walking around the zoo enjoying a lady's afternoon out."

  • Daria Enrolls at Nevermore, by Meester_Lee (part 5): "Daria got up from lunch and started walking back to her dorm to pick up her books. Not quite Hogwarts quality, she thought, but then again she could get meals better-suited to keeping her figure."

  • Daria on the Trail, by meesterlee (part 6): "Our 'Nooner' by the Ninth Crossing of the Sweetwater lasted much longer than usual."

  • The F Files, by jones2000 (part 7): "Unbeknown to Chuck, Jodie Landon, not used to being one sitting back and letting others do the jobs for her, was also chasing answers."

  • It’s Just Rock And Roll. It’s Not That Serious, by translayton (part 1): "'Now introducing.... THEEE BUNGHOLLESSS!' A disconnected voice boomed over the packed stadium. Despite the lack of music playing, four hearts pounded in anxious unison."

  • Vendible, by FictionAuthorofFiction (COMPLETE!): "How was it that people could be so materialistic, yet so extraordinarily dull at the same time, she wondered silently staring at the display in front of her."

Don't Bully Supermarket Employees Today...Or Any Day!

I've got good news and bad news for Quinn on Pink Shirt Day. The good news is that she is, as usual, dressed for the occasion. The bad news is that the holiday is intended to fight bullying and, as one of Lawndale High's resident mean girls, she's really not the appropriate spokesperson.

Andrea, on the other hand, will not be wearing a pink shirt. Partly because she's a goth and doesn't do pink, and partly because she'll be wearing her Payday uniform for Supermarket Employee Day. She may hate the job, but the girl definitely knows where the bootlaces are!

She's Tweeting!

While I commend Daria's efforts on National Whistleblower Reward Day, I don't think she's going to be rewarded for that particular kind of whistleblowing. Unless getting access to her locker counts as a reward, in which case well done, Daria!

Since this is also National Student Volunteer Day, I don't think she should be in too much of a hurry to get to class. Chances are she's going to have to "voluntarily" volunteer to help out during Awareness of Others Week. And I don't think the elderly of Lawndale could handle it.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Agere, by RadioFox (part 13): "Brittany laid on the hard living room floor as she coloured in a picture of Twilight, Rarity and Applejack in her colouring book."

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 58): "They say that, when we are dreaming, most of the times we never realize that it's just a dream."

Wine? I'd Rather Whine!

I really don't think Jane and Alison should be celebrating National Drink Wine Day. Not because Jane's underage or because it will lead to misunderstandings and awkwardness later, but because they'll end up back at Alison's place...looking at pastels.

It was on this day in 2000 that the "Behind the Scenes with Daria" special aired on MTV. You can view the whole thing here.

Walk Like an Esteem Teacher!

Mr. O'Neill looks far more impressive than usual for the anniversary of the unsealing of King Tutankhamun's tomb on this day in 1923, but I suppose that's not saying much. I mean, it would be difficult for the man to look less impressive than usual, wouldn't it?

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Arts 'N Crass" on this day in 1998, as well as the Daria Day marathon that aired just before it. Check out the transcript to have all of your burning questions answered, such as what the Morgendorffers are always eating. Really hard-hitting stuff.

Fanfic Update!
  • Choice of the Cheerleader 02 - A Fair of Change, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "Quinn was annoyed. Brittany’s audition, while rather good, wasn’t an excuse for Mr. O’Neill to not consider anyone else. She wondered what to do about it. Then it hit her. Sabotage!"

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 57): "Wallerstein Park was the largest and most beautiful green area in all of Layndale."

  • Star Trek: Lower Decks: An Aquatic Second Contact, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "Mariner entered the room to see Tendi and T’Lyn in the midst of a discussion."

  • Stranger Without Time, by radiofox (part 8): "That evening, Quinn looked out her window while she contemplated the day's events. The waxing gibious moon beamed through the starry skies and crisp fall air that delicately waved back and forth across town."

"Everything is cool. Everything is love, baby."

Poor Cupid just doesn't seem to be in the mood for Valentine’s Day, and I can't say I blame him. I mean, no holiday would feel happy with a day that's both saccharine and commercial at the same time.

You have plenty of options for celebrating this one, though! You could get dumped and cry about it on a carnival ride for Ferris Wheel Day, or literally give your heart to someone for National Organ Donor Day! Better yet, you could read Daria's thoughts on the subject in her 2012 Huffington Post editorial, "What I Think About Valentine's Day." Or you could even do all three, but I'd save the heart donation for last if I were you.

A Tender Family Moment...No Wonder Quinn Left

I see the Morgendorffers (minus Quinn) have gotten all the way into the spirit of Hug Day, which is a minor miracle considering how fond Daria is of physical contact. Get out there and hug someone, but only with their permission!

Give out extra hugs if your favorite sportsball team wins the Super Bowl, which is going on today. Just take care with all those "guys yelling and jumping up and down and banging into stuff" because the last thing you want is a pants-related dipsaster!

Goths and Rain...the Perfect Combination!

Andrea's feeling far more colorful than usual in honor of Umbrella Day, but I suppose once you put on a Payday uniform nothing can really scare you anymore. Way to rock those floral prints, Andrea!

It was also on this day in 1996 that Deep Blue defeated Garry Kasparov in their first-ever chess game. It was a rough day for humanity, but just wait until Kevin Thompson gets a chance to compete. "King me! King me! King me!"

Are There Any Operas About Boy Scouts?

Better not accuse these kids of being Reds, because it's Boy Scout Day and they're only here to help old ladies cross the street and sell popcorn! And maybe be Reds. You never really know.

This is also Opera Day, so be sure to catch the command performance of Madame Butterfly in the automotive department at Payday! Pick up some free snacks while you're there, but don't let Mr. DeMartino catch you.

Fanfic Update!
  • Song From An American Movie, by ladyevil (part 8): "'Stop filming this!' Tori yelled at the camera. 'I said stop filming this, you little slut!'"

What a Nice Name You Have, Ashley!

Quinn's got the right idea for Pay a Compliment Day, but I really think the point of the holiday is to compliment other people. Oh, well. At least she's spending quality time with her favorite person.

Today is also National Ashley Day, but unfortunately not Ashley-Amber Day. Sorry, Ashley-Amber. Go buy something super sparkly with Steve Taylor's credit card to cheer yourself up!

Did Trent Ever Get Paid to NOT Grow Crops?

Helen's all ready for Farmer's Day, or at least she has a wheel and a chicken. Those will come in super handy when she needs to teach the chicken to ride a unicycle. It's possible that I don't have a firm grasp on how farming works.

Once the vegetables have been harvested, why not celebrate Homemade Soup Day? Not you, Jake. One bite of Kitchen Sink Stew is more than enough for one lifetime, thank you.

Fanfic Update!
  • Quinn's Code 16: The Geek's Expose, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 6): "Back at the Leung-Bell's Keith watched as Jane sketched some game characters. 'You're quite good,' he said."

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 56): "Lockie Allyngard could dream up and synthesize weapons so lethal that the very best chemists ever would have nightmares for weeks, her rockets were so good that they seemed unreal and yet she was not exactly good if you asked her to prepare breakfast in any ordinary kitchen."

  • A Sick, Sad World (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have), by Two-Eyed Charlie (COMPLETE!): "NARRATOR: You walk through a portal at the back of the Good Time Chinese Restaurant. Inside is another dimension, a dimension of anthropomorphic holidays. You discover that there's no pizza, because all the pizza-themed holidays were executed after a bloody coup. You realize then that you truly live in...a Sick, Sad World."

Brown Dog, Ground Hog!

Everyone wish Lawndale's luckiest bulldog a happy National Brown Dog Day! Seriously, though, that little guy should be glad he escaped Daria's driving in one piece.

Speaking of brown furry critters, today is also Groundhog Day, in which we as a society trust an oversized rodent to predict the weather. I feel like this isn't so much a holiday as a cry for help.
