Wait...Is That Superman on the Right?

Apparently Jane has decided to celebrate National Eyewear Day, but I don't think Daria will be pleased. Unfortunately, with her impaired vision her chances of snatching back her glasses are very low.

She's definitely going to need those glasses in order to study, especially if she's gone on to college or even grad school, which would be appropriate for National Higher Education Day. I just hope that the people at college in real life are a lot nicer than the ones in her daydream.

Once Jane is done messing with Daria's eyewear, she could go hang out at that abandoned drive-in to take part in National Drive-In Movie Day. She just needs to be careful, because the last thing she'll want is to run into Nathan there.

Fanfic Update!
  • Avatar: The Drama Of Daria, by psychotol (part 15): "'Being the sister of the Avatar should be a source of pride at school, but instead Daria somehow managed to turn the whole thing into a spinal injury inducing source of cringe, Sandi has had to demote me to Treasurer, Tiffany has had to take up that role,' said Quinn as the family sat around the table consuming the evening meal."

  • Convergence on Lawndale, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 16): "Peter considered webslinging back to Glen Oaks Lane, but decided against it. Spider-Man appearing in Lawndale would draw too much attention."

  • Daria has a what?!, by Mr_peanutbutter (COMPLETE!): "Daria liked silence. She appreciated those rare, precious moments when no one was talking, when the world just shut up and left her alone."

  • Daria in Baltimore, by Blake C Stacey (BlakeStacey) (COMPLETE!): "The guest speaker was returning his papers to his slim leather valise. 'That was an uncommonly insightful question, miss. And phrased as a true question rather than a comment, thus uncommonly courteous.'"

  • Green Lantern Daria: Basic Training, by echopapa (parts 1 and 2): "'How would you like to go to Hawaii?' Daria crouched in a jagged volcanic vent, the emerald aura of her Power Ring shimmering as it filtered out the sulfurous steam and noxious gases." (Part 2)

  • Heavenly Wine and Roses, by riotsquirrrl (part 13): "'So why are we going to DC?' Daria asks as she sits down on a metro car window seat early on a Saturday morning. Which, for Daria, really meant anytime before noon."

  • Nostos, by MyOwnName (COMPLETE!): "The room’s age clings the walls and paints the light cream in the spaces time begins to reach like scars backwards the way they never clean and just hurt until the skin falls."

  • Old Beavis and Butthead have a gender reveal, by Horned_Catfish (COMPLETE!): "It’s been a year or two since Beavis and Butthead have gotten married, just two young idiots in love, not having a single care in the world. The two, after like a two minute talk, started wanting to have kids of their own..."

  • Spider Quinn 22 Attractions of Lawndale, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (parts 1 and 2): "It was still in the early hours when SpiderGirl responded to alarms at the facility on Lawndale’s northern edge, not far from the Interstate." (Part 2)

  • Star Trek: Daria: The Risa 1000, by echopapa (COMPLETE!): "'Jane, the humidity just hit 104%—I didn't even know that was mathematically possible,' Naomi shouted, her fingers flying across the Skral's environmental sensors." (Part 12)

  • Study A Broad, by Bolshevitch (part 1): "'Okay, okay, open your eyes.' Jane sets the car into park, taps her friend on the shoulder. Daria’s hands come up off the top of her glasses."

Do Turtles Get Divorced?

Ms. Barch has either decided to give a very unusual zoology demonstration or else perhaps she's celebrating World Turtle Day. Either way, it should be a day no one in her class forgets! Upchuck will be relieved; now he can outrun her if necessary.

I hope the Yeagers wish Ethan a happy National Ethan Day, and perhaps let him go rock climbing to celebrate. When he's ready, of course.

Two days ago was the anniversary of "One J at a Time," in which Quinn gives monogamy a spin but ultimately decides not to bother. Considering her potential steady boyfriends left her without a second thought in favor of squirrels and go-karting, I'm not sure I blame her.

The deadline to vote in the 2025 Daria Fanworks Awards has been extended to Monday, May 25. Please vote if you haven't yet!

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria: The Risa 1000, by echopapa (parts 1 - 9): "'Let me get this straight,' Daria said, her voice flat enough to serve as a level for a warp core. 'Our plan for "relaxation" involves borrowing a legendary grav-bike from a Fleet Admiral, "borrowing" a Starfleet Runabout from a supervisor who is legally required to stop us, and then flying both into a curated typhoon on a planet known for its "Jamaharon" hospitality. Did I miss anything, or is the insanity quota for the morning finally filled?'" (Part 2) (Part 3) (Parts 4 and 5) (Part 6) (Parts 7 and 8) (Part 9)

  • Every Rowe Has It's Thorn, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Adam Rowe was on a dinner date with Lauren Alvarez, a VERY attractive woman in her thirties. The dinner date was going very well as the two made conversation." (Part 3)

  • Spider Quinn 21 A View of Oakwood and Ruins, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 7): "The Enigma lowered the forcefield she had used to protect herself and Dafoanairi. 'Of course he’d trap it like that!' she groused." (Part 8)

Three Cheers for Windmills!

It seems that Brittany has traded her pompoms for windmill blades in honor of Windmill Day, but it's going to make cheerleading much more difficult. Let's just hope she doesn't end up at the top of the pyramid! I'm sure Tad Gupty will want to celebrate this holiday, with his strong admiration for their clean source of energy, but I hope he keeps an eye on his family's whereabouts at the same time so he doesn't lose them.

If he does, hopefully Daria will be there to help him again, which is only right because this is also National Babysitters Day. Of course, Daria doesn't observe this holiday willingly, no matter how much Quinn whines.

At least she could go hang out at Jane's house afterward, and perhaps even celebrate National Sleepover Day! They shouldn't bother to sleep, though, because it's also Stay Up All Night Day. That might be a bad idea, however, because it didn't work out so well for Trent and Jesse the night before the flea market!

Fanfic Update!
  • Convergence on Lawndale, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 15): "The Doctor noticed something. There were many subtle energy readings scattered around Lawndale. ‘Do these have to do with the portal device or the flicker?’ He wasn’t sure."

  • Every Rowe Has It’s Thorn, by wilddogjj (part 1): "It’s only 6:00 AM on a Saturday and Chris Carbone was already outside of his house."

  • "Expectavi"—Daria: Agent of Cobra, by Ranchoth (part 7): "During the early 1990s, the Cobra Organization reentered the field of applied environmental manipulation as a military strategy."

  • I (Don't) Want to Be a Part of It, by ladyevil (part 14): "'I mean, I wasn’t the worst mother ever.' Helen was saying."

  • Spider Quinn 21 A View of Oakwood and Ruins, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 6): "'Waiting can be difficult,' SpiderGirl said. Ninja Talon knew that SpiderGirl wasn’t talking about the current situation, although that would have made sense, but more about the ongoing situation between her and the Enigma."

  • Star Trek: Daria: Changing Lanes, by echopapa (part 1): "The sun over the Daystrom Institute’s Pasadena campus was relentless, the kind of bright, clean heat that made the 24th century look like a travel brochure. Daria, Jane, and Naomi had opted for public transport and walked the final stretch from the station."

"It's the Soul Train. Beep beep. Get on board."

Jane looks pretty happy to celebrate International Dance Day, even though it's not her usual preferred art form. Perhaps she's thinking up a new school dance theme, after her success with Jackson Pollock.

Quinn might decide to observe World Wish Day by closing her eyes and imagining what she wants. She might even wish for something not completely shallow this time!

Going forward, this blog will be updating once a week rather than every other day. In part this is to lighten the load on my schedule, and in part because the pace of fandom news and fanfic have slowed enough that it isn't necessary to provide updates more often.

Fanfic Update!
  • Spider Quinn 21 A View of Oakwood and Ruins, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 5): "Sandi wasn’t sure what Quinn had been up to, but she focused on the Oakwood map. The Story Oak was in the middle of town and Oscorp had no offices nearby."

Are Black and White Both the Current Neutral?

Sandi is sporting a radically new look in honor of World Penguin Day, but I really don't it's going to go over well. I mean, a tuxedo? Black tie during the daytime is definitely a fashion don't.

I hope Jane knows that today is National Day of Puppetry, because it will give her the opportunity to test out her theory that everything is funnier with puppets. Well, everything except for wacky radio DJs.

Quinn and Helen, I'm sure, will be glad to know that today is National Telephone Day, because there are few things more important to them than phones. I suspect that the modern age of mobile technology has only made them even more attached to their phones, as well.

Fanfic Update!
  • No Son of Mine, by chynarose (COMPLETE!): "It’s hard being a Ruttheimer. Or at least it’s hard to be me. My name is Charles Ruttheimer the Third, but most people call me Upchuck."

  • Unfortunate Son, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Kevin, Chuck, Jim and Chris were sitting on Kevin’s porch drinking beer and talking. In contrast to the other guys, Jim’s eyes were bloodshot and had bags under them." (Part 3)

Woof!

This gorgeous fellow is enjoying a celebratory stick for National Bulldogs Are Beautiful Day, but I hope he watches where he's going. Daria is a licensed driver now, she still wears glasses instead of contacts, and she's anything but timid after her encounter with Travis.

I hope that Mrs. Stoller is enjoying Kindergarten Day, especially because she apparently believes everyone she sees is a kindergartner. At least you know her students were always very aware of their posture.

Since today is National Library Workers Day, I want to tell you all one thing: Shhhhhh! Okay, fine, you can talk quietly. Just watch out for falling roofs, all right?

Fanfic Update!
  • Of Inhuman Bonding, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Quinn, Jim and Tommy were in the parking lot speaking to a panicked Kevin and Artie."

  • Spider Quinn 21 A View of Oakwood and Ruins, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 4): "Upon using an emergency exit they found security waiting for them. Ninja Talon slammed it closed and SpiderGirl webbed it shut."

  • Unfortunate Son, by wilddogjj (part 1): "It was Sunday night and the Carbones (Quinn, Jim and the triplets) were having a huge Italian Sunday dinner in the dinning room. Extended family were present as well. Jake and Helen were there, though Daria wasn’t due to being too busy to commute from NYC to Lawndale."

What About Down Low and Too Slow?

It seems that Presidents' Day is giving itself a celebratory gesture in honor of National High Five Day, which is good because I don't think anyone else on Holiday Island would be willing to interact with them at all. No matter how good either of them is at the harpsichord.

Honestly, I think most people would prefer to spend time with flying nocturnal animals, and not just because it's Bat Appreciation Day. Jane, especially, would love to "sleep upside-down and spread rabies," and who am I to get in the way of her ambitions?

Although today is Blah, Blah, Blah Day, I think that's pretty much every day for a Lawndale High School teacher. It's also probably what Daria hears whenever someone tries to make unwanted conversation with her.

Fanfic Update!
  • In cerca d'autore, by fridaythesavage (COMPLETE!): "Melody Powers wanted to die. As the elating grip of the story had slowly released her, she had realized what exactly she had just done."

May Your Letters Be Useful and May Your Word Scores Be Triple!

Looks like Daria is on another winning streak for Scrabble Day, and if she plays her, uh, tiles right then she might be able to negotiate her way out of another grounding. Really, anyone who goes up against someone with Daria's vocabulary skills deserves what they get.

For less intense activities, you could celebrate International Plant Appreciation Day by, well, appreciating a plant. If you see a crutch sprout a flower, though, you'd better run away before the ghost of Tommy Sherman shows up. Yes, that's a sentence I just wrote.

On this day in 1997, the Sunday Examiner & Chronicle-Parade published an interview with Daria. Check it out to learn about some fun tidbits like Jane's New Kids on the Block T-shirt or Daria's college dorm decorating plans.

Fanfic Update!
  • Spider Quinn 21 A View of Oakwood and Ruins, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 3): "SpiderGirl thought about what the administrator had said as she made her way towards the wing she and Joey had been in earlier. She hadn’t heard about an Oakwood vigilante, but then she was focused on Lawndale."

Nobunny Expected to See This

Upchuck is celebrating the anniversary of the late Hugh Hefner's birth on this day one hundred years ago in a scene that could only come from his wildest dreams and the Fashion Club's worst nightmares. Unless this is just moments before the girls, having lulled him into a false sense of security, kill him and hide the body where no one will find it.

If they do follow through with this plot, they may need to take Jake's advice for Name Yourself Day: "Walk away. You change your name, move to another state, get some ID." Sorry, everybody who's also planning on observing this one; I already have dibs on "Esmerelda."

Finally, be sure to appreciate any ancient sandwiches you may sit on because it's National Cherish an Antique Day! You could also visit a flea market and see if you find any treasures like California Raisins posable erasers or Annette Funicello albums.

E.T. Phone...the Mall

Tiffany is ready to celebrate First Contact Day, but alien enthusiasts everywhere will be disappointed. After all, they've been hoping to find intelligent life on other planets.

Fortunately, it's also Deep Dish Pizza Day, and no one can be sad when they have pizza. In Daria's own words, "there's no aspect, no facet, no moment of life that can't be improved with pizza."

Finally, happy Easter to everyone in fandom who celebrates! Thanks to the Wayback Machine, you can enjoy a festive batch of Easter-themed Daria stories and fanart from the Sh33p's Fluff.

Fanfic Update!
  • Captain or Hero?, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "Captain Erica Browne looked at the planet from her ready room window. Beowulf had arrived in high orbit earlier in the day."

No Foolin'!

Mr. O'Neill looks especially foolish today for April Fool’s Day, and for him that's really saying something. Remember not to believe anything you see or hear today...even from me. Ha! Paradox!

Hey, remember that day nineteen years ago when all those objects came to life and took over our civilization? That was sure a crazy day, wasn't it? Good times.

If you'd like to mark the occasion with a physical memento, you could also celebrate National Greeting Card Day by sending someone a heartfelt message. Just don't make the same mistake Stacy did and give away any free poems!

Maybe He Could Have Someone Cut Him in Half?

Upchuck seems ready to recreate one of Harry Houdini's stunts in honor of the anniversary of the illusionist's birth on this day in 1874. However, it won't be quite the same because when Houdini reappeared after disappearing, audiences were happy. Upchuck? Not so much.

Jake, meanwhile, will be happy to know that it's National Cocktail Day and he can feel free to indulge in a martini if he wants. I don't think he should have any sake, though...it might bring back bad memories of Tokyo Toby's.

Today is a double anniversary for the episodes "Cafe Disaffecto" in 1997 and "The Lost Girls" in 1999. Daria's writing skills excelled in both; in the first she managed to start an anti-Communist riot while in the second she was "rewarded" for her essay skills with a visit from Val. As in Val. It's a wonder she ever picked up a pen again.

Fanfic Update!
  • Adventures Together, by elle_stone (COMPLETE!): "'So when are you taking me to the UFO convention?' Jane asks as they turn onto Howard."

  • The Operation, by DrT (COMPLETE!): "'So,' the nurse stated in as soothing a voice as possible, 'put your clothes into this bag and then put on the socks and gown. We’ll be in to hook up the IVs and finish the prep in a few minutes.'"

  • Points of Authority, by hitthefl00r (part 3): "The three of you stood on the doorstep of Lane house, attempting to convince Daria. She didn’t even turn, just rolled her eyes."

Watch Out for Atomic Communists from Mars!

Better keep at least one eye on the skies, because it's Extraterrestrial Abductions Day and you never know who might be waiting to scoop you up. On the bright side, they might be alien space babes who will replace your skin and press your pants for free!

If you don't get abducted, feel free to tell everyone you did because it's also World Storytelling Day and being kidnapped by a UFO would make for a fun tale. I'm sure it would be more amusing than Quinn's story about tacky dresses or Daria's cannibal fairy tale.

If you don't do anything else today, at least be sure to brush your teeth. Partly because it's World Oral Health Day and partly because no one wants to smell your bad breath. Don't forget to follow the Gupty kids' example by flossing!

Fanfic Update!
  • Spider Quinn 20 The Imitation Tempest, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "Norman Osborn was looking at the latest email regarding a replacement for the Goblin Glider when the assistant messaged him."

I Suspect a Trap

Daria is showing off her mouth for Lips Appreciation Day, although she usually uses them for snarking rather than for kissing--with one infamous exception. Perhaps she's just asking to borrow Jane's lip gloss. It's kiwi flavored!

If Daria wants to get really out of character, she could also celebrate Act Happy Day! After all, she doesn't like to smile unless she has a reason.

With today being the anniversary of the day the episode "That Was Then, This is Dumb" aired in 1998, this would be a good day to enjoy some nostalgia. I should point out, though, that the episode is now about as far away from the current date as the 60s were from the episode's airdate. Anyone else feel old now?

Fanfic Update!
  • And so what? We have free will anyway, by natalieee_139 (COMPLETE!): "'Okay... I think we have what we need. Trent, are you ready?' Daria asked, peeking through the curtains of the LHS auditorium and picking up their speech."

  • Of Inhuman Bonding, by wilddogjj (parts 1 and 2): "Kevin was hanging out on the porch drinking beer with Quinn's husband, Jim. With them was Jim and Quinn's son Tommy, though he was drinking soda." (Part 2)

She's Actually Quite Ruthless!

I'm not sure that Grandma Ruth is all that excited about National Ruth Day, but perhaps she's just disappointed that no one has given her girdle money lately. I'm sure she'll feel better once she gets the chance to criticize Helen a few times.

Unfortunately, I suspect Helen will not be home because it's National Working Mom's Day and she's definitely more interested in the "working" part of the holiday. Ruth will just have to give Daria and Quinn all of the passive aggressive comments instead.

With any luck, Camp Grizzly, first seen in the episode "Camp Fear" on this day in 2001, will hold another reunion and give the girls an excuse to leave. Although choosing between staying with Grandma Ruth and spending time with Skip Stevens and Amelia...well, that's a tough call.

The Score is Love-Hate

Daria is being surprisingly athletic in honor of World Tennis Day, especially since normally the most exerting activity she participates in is lifting a hardcover book. Jodie, being on the tennis team, might welcome the support as long as Daria puts more effort into returning serves than she did when playing volleyball.

I just hope she takes care when the ball is in play, because it's Brain Injury Awareness Day and the last thing she wants is to be hit in the head. Tommy Sherman did enough of that at Lawndale High for everyone, and Kevin's probably more concerned with avoiding knee injuries.

If Kevin does get hurt again, at least he has a gig ready for him for National Safety Day. His turn as a motivational speaker for grade school kids was actually kind of heartwarming, even if it didn't last very long.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Ex-Fashion Club Comes to a Few Conclusions, by Louisethebeaverwarrior (COMPLETE!): "Despite it being her idea from the start, Quinn still rolled her eyes at herself while she dialed. Daria was probably the worst person to ask about relationship things, but she’d tried Stacy and Tiffany who had, naturally, been no help."

  • Spider Quinn 20 The Imitation Tempest, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 7): "It was still quite early when Daria arrived at the Historia. It was early enough that Angie was still setting up the café when she arrived."

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz....

Daria and Jane definitely have the right idea for Public Sleeping Day, but they have a long way to go to catch up with Trent. If sleeping (in public or otherwise) were an Olympic sport...Trent would lose because he'd oversleep and miss the event entirely.

I hope that Quinn doesn't get it into her head to celebrate National Essay Day, because I don't think Daria (or the rest of us) could handle another "brainy" phase from her. "Academic Imprisonment" was never going to win any Pulitzer awards, anyway.

Someone should tell Ms. Barch that it's National Science Day and she should take a break from ranting about her ex-husband to do some teaching. Unfortunately the science lesson will probably be about how her ex-husband is scientifically inferior to all other organisms on the planet.

Fanfic Update!
  • Is It Queer Yet?, by cas_hat_o3 (parts 1 and 2): "After the nightmare that was explaining to her mom that couldn't do an impromptu driving session because she was not, in fact, wearing her contacts, her eyes had hurt too much to do so, and she'd chosen to go to school without them or her glasses for." (Part 2)

  • Spider Quinn 20 The Imitation Tempest, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 6): "Dafoanairi saw Tania running up. 'What’s wrong?' she asked as she held her staff in a ready manner."

Tweeeeeeeeeet!

Although National Whistleblower Reward Day refers to the kind of whistleblower that calls out wrongdoing rather than people who literally blow whistles, Daria will in fact receive a reward. That reward being that Kevin and Brittany will get away from her locker and let her access it in peace.

Once that task is accomplished, she could offer her time to help increase the glory and honor of Lawndale High by participating in National Student Volunteer Day! I wouldn't hold your breath, though. Save it for blowing those whistles.

Indeed, as Mrs. Griffin says, to volunteer is to say "use me," so it's better to celebrate National Leadership Day by taking charge instead. As long as you're willing to try to keep a group of indifferent teenagers on task, in which case you're probably insane and shouldn't be in a position of leadership.

Fanfic Update!
  • Spider Quinn 20 The Imitation Tempest, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 5): "After school, Daria changed to Dafoanairi on the school roof. She looked over towards the Oscorp headquarters in the distance. ‘I know you’re planning something for this town. But, not if I have anything to say about it.’"

But Was He Buried Without His Liver or His Diver?

Although King Tut's tomb was officially opened on this day in 1923, it looks like Jake is preparing to celebrate the opening of King Tut's cereal box. As long as he's careful when he pours the milk, I think he'll be just fine.

Holiday Island had better look out, because it's President's Day and those two holidays are likely to be even more insufferable than usual. If that's possible. Feel free to celebrate by playing the harpsichord...acoustic or electric!

It was on this day in 1998 that the episode "Arts 'N Crass" first aired, preceded by the "Daria Day" marathon! During the marathon, Jane and Daria answered letters from fans with varying degrees of sincerity but plenty of humor.

Fanfic Update!
  • Hell Hath No Fury Like a Woman Pantsed, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Shane Sloane had Al, Lou, Tommy, Timmy, Kevin Jr. and Q over to play video games. He'd become a lot less of a bully since the time he pushed Timmy too far. Today, they were all over to play video games." (Part 2) (Part 3)

She Still Looks Stone-Faced

Andrea looks (slightly) more stoic than usual, thanks to her impression of Abraham Lincoln on the anniversary of his birth on this day in 1809. Maybe Jodie can spend some time today telling Brittany the story of what happened to him and his wife...but very gently and using very small words.

Interestingly, scientist Charles Darwin was born on the very same day, in the same year. I'm sure Kevin will be pleased to know that "the monkey guy" is being celebrated today, thanks to his love of monkeys, although he might be disturbed to find that Darwin was not, in fact, the man in the yellow hat.

I would strongly recommend that you only observe Hug Day with willing participants. Hugging someone like Daria without permission could lead to a lawsuit or, at the very least, stomped toes.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria's narration, by redpink (part 1): "You know, I never thought I'd be the kind of person who'd find comfort in something so... tactile. But here I am, lying on Jane's bed, my stomach resting against hers like we're puzzle pieces that finally clicked."

  • I (Don't) Want to Be a Part of It, by ladyevil (part 13): "'You’re Quinn, right?' Quinn turned to see a blonde, middle aged woman in a blouse that was five years out of fashion."

  • Ow, What a Night!, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Quinn sat at the bar with Angie and her friends, and she was not having a good time due to being the only 43-year-old in a club full of twenty-somethings." (Part 3)

  • Scitech Day, by redpink (part 1): "Jane's room is dim except for the soft glow of the lamp on her nightstand."

  • Spider Quinn 20 The Imitation Tempest, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 4): "SpiderGirl looked out over the town from the top of the theater as she usually did. ‘Something feels off,’ she thought. ‘It’s not like the usual feeling when looking over the town,’ she thought."
