Leaping Into a Rare Holiday

Jodie and Mack are clearly having a super Leap Day, and considering this day only comes around once every four years I'd say that's a good thing. So, to all of the Daria fans out there, go ahead and take a flying leap!

Although today is National Toast Day, I assume it's completely permissible to have toast more often than every four years. Indeed, Daria can recommend it as a great remedy if you end up at a greasy spoon after a long road trip full of humiliation and carsickness.

Caaaaaaatch Theeeeeem Aaaaaall!

Tiffany's looking extra-cute today as a fictional critter for National Pokemon Day, but don't expect her to participate in any battles. She might mess up her hair or smudge her makeup or (gasp) break a nail!

Let's hope Lawndale's tourism industry (assuming it has one) gets a boost for National Strawberry Day, because Lawndale is the home of the Big Strawberry! Although it only appeared in the books, the Big Strawberry did manage a surprising number of fanfic appearances.

Finally, why not enjoy a blast from the past for Retro Day? You can dig through Jane's old clothes for something vintage or reminisce with the Yeagers about the good old days. Or just sell a bunch of old junk at a flea market!

Fanfic Update!
  • The Betrothed, by easmith (part 16): "'I call Lord Dylan of House Adams for questioning!' Dylan was still sitting in his chair when the call came, head in hand and drink still largely untouched."

  • Parting Gift, by Rémi (part 7): "Entering the kitchen of the Morgendorffer home, a still barely awake Daria was greeted by an appetizing smell. Quinn, already washed, made up and dressed for the day, was busy in front of a stove."

  • Roasted, by wilddogjj (part 4): "Quinn was horrified to find a dead body right outside the back door of her new restaurant. Even worse was the fact that this was someone that she knew."

  • Spider Quinn 07: Ashes to Ashes, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "A car was being chased along a back road. 'Come on, pick up!' the woman driving said."

  • Titanic - A True Story, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 30 and 31): "There it was, the greatest ship ever created all broken and sinking so fast on its final voyage to the depths of the ocean, well over a thousand people cried and screamed in the freezing water everywhere and even Ethel found herself reduced to shock." (Part 31)

No Complaints About Quiet Bass Playing!

Nick looks a little wary about today being National Nicholas Day, but maybe he's just worried that he's behind on his child support payments. Anyone know of a venue looking for a bass player?

On second thought, never mind, because it's Quiet Day and we really don't need any second rate musicians breaking the peaceful silence. Especially if Daria's reading a good book right now.

Lastly, it was on this day in 2000 that the episode "Partner's Complaint" first aired. Nick didn't make an appearance in that one, but it did feature a lot of music not getting made, so I suppose that's still appropriate. Way to blow it, Trent.

Wait Until She Sees Her Own Nose Grow

Tiffany's hoping to finally become a real girl because it's Pinocchio Day and miracles can happen. I think she'd be better off asking the Blue Fairy to increase her IQ, but I expect some feats are beyond even magic.

Someone should let Jodie know that it's Play Tennis Day, and as a member of the Tennis Team she needs to get some practice in. It's not like she has anything else going on right now, right? Even though he prefers golf now, as a child Jake did ask to go to tennis camp, so he might be interested as well. Then again, considering that request led him to military school, he might not.

If you'd like to trade a tennis racket for a paintball gun, that would be appropriate for the anniversary of "The Daria Hunter," which aired on this day in 1998. If anyone needs me, I'll be staying out of the line of fire at the Hanoi Hilton replica.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Betrothed, by easmith (parts 15 and 16): "The door swung open slowly and silently, startling Dylan upright in his bed. Visions of midnight assassins mixed with fading fragments of dreams tumbled through his head as he frantically felt for the clothes he had tossed onto the floor on the way to bed, remembering the sword he had laid on top of the pile." (Part 16)

  • Daria Criticizes Butch Hartman's Views on Autism, by Buffcoat (COMPLETE!): "[The scene opens in the school cafeteria. Daria Morgendorffer sits at a table, flipping through a book, while Butch Hartman, the famous animator, stand nearby, surrounded by students eager to talk to him.]"

  • Roasted, by wilddogjj (parts 2 and 3): "Outside the restaurant the old sign that read Bubba's Barbecue Pit was being replaced with one that read Quinn's Fine Dining." (Part 3)

  • This is Not America, by ladyevil (part 6): "In Jane’s back yard, Alfred was giving Daria and Jane another self defense demonstration. 'You want to know what to do if someone tries to strangle you, Daria?'"

  • Titanic - A True Story, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 29): "In the depths of the night that would soon be a part of history, and with Titanic already listed in a rather sharp fashion, it soon became clear why Captain Edward Smith had wanted to keep the situation under control and professional order for as long as would be possible..."

Eat Her Fashionable Dust, Sandi!

Stacy is having a blast in honor of the anniversary of NASCAR's founding on this day in 1948. I'm sure the rest of the Fashion Club won't approve, but I say ignore them and follow your dreams, Stacy!

I might even send her a supportive greeting card, since it's Card Reading Day and that would be especially appropriate. Then again, it might remind Stacy that she's been giving her cards/poems away for years.

Twiiiiinkle, Twiiiiinkle, Liiiiitle Staaaaaaar

Tiffany's doing a bit of stargazing in honor of the anniversary of Nicolaus Copernicus's birth on this day in 1473. She'll be displeased to learn that he supported the theory that the Earth revolves around the sun...not around Tiffany.

Since today is also President’s Day, I'll warn you not to wear sandals. Unless you want to be hatchet city, that is.

Finally, it was on this day in 2001 that the episode "Fizz Ed" first aired. In celebration, I invite Ultra Cola to sponsor this blog in exchange for tons of cash. Please?

Fanfic Update!
  • The Betrothed, by easmith (parts 13 and 14): "Dylan stood in a small, wood-paneled room, fidgeting nervously as Llewellyn Carter made unnecessary adjustments to his outfit as he waited for the signal to emerge into the Great Hall, there to be Presented to the woman of his dreams." (Part 14)

  • Friend of a Friend, by Doggodoaattack (part 9): "Daria woke up to the sound of birds chirping outside the window, heat and light hitting her face. She felt a warmth behind her and a weight around her waist."

  • Parting Gift, by Rémi (part 6): "The Morgendorffer family was gathered for supper, but something was wrong. The parents were arguing."

  • Roasted, by wilddogjj (part 1): "At the entrance to LeGrande was a banner that read 'Lawndale Business Leaders Alliance Gala'. Inside, a formal event was being held in the hotel's ballroom."

  • Titanic - A True Story, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 27 and 28): "Anna Felicia looked up at the starry sky, and she thought that all of these rockets and dazzling white sparks would be very beautiful indeed, only if Titanic was not already on its way to disappearing forever into the darkness of the ocean." (Part 28)

Don't Forget the Dainty Garland!

Quinn is singing to bring down the house for the anniversary of the premiere of Madama Butterfly on this day in 1904. Unfortunately, she's been cast in the production currently performing in the automotive section at PayDay, so I hope she's not expecting anything particularly prestigious.

However, you can still catch Quinn's performance in the episode "Daria!," which aired on this day twenty-five years ago. Today is also the anniversary of the "Sarcastathon 3000," which was a marathon of Daria episodes with new introductions by a strangely immobile Daria and Jane.

No one tell Mack that today is Michael Jordan's birthday, though, as I expect he's probably a little sensitive about his name. Do you suppose he ever changed it back after he turned 18?

Half Price Candy Sounds Good To Me!

Don't look now, Daria, but you're about to involuntarily celebrate Singles Awareness Day. If it's any comfort, it won't be long before she and Tom make Jane celebrate Singles Awareness Day.

Honestly, I think Daria would be better off taking her own advice from "What I Think About Valentine's Day," which appeared in the Huffington Post on this day in 2012. That is, she should go get herself some of that sweet discounted chocolate.

On this day in 1999, "Daria Day 99" aired on MTV to kick off the third season. I don't think there was anything about dating or chocolate involved, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of information out there about the event, so who knows?

Fanfic Update!
  • Avatar The Drama of Daria, by psychotol (part 12): "'Barch?' The science teacher turned around to see Daria stood behind her in the hallway as students walked past them to their classes holding a clamp folder and a large ziplock bag containing the envelope her homework assignment was in with appropriate hazard warnings on it."

  • The Betrothed, by easmith (parts 11 and 12): "Cynthia lay wide awake in her small, solitary room down in the Depths. She could not have guessed the hour, unaware even if the Sun had yet managed to rise or if the outer world still slumbered in darkness." (Part 12)

  • Complex College Mating Rituals as a Distraction from the Brutality of Boston Winter, by elle_stone (COMPLETE!): "'Complex college mating rituals as a distraction from the brutality of Boston winter,' Daria answers."

  • Homecoming, by DavidFalkayn (part 1): "One of the Q, taking on the form of a young woman with blonde hair and fair skin, approached Q as he gazed at the endless universes."

  • Southern Fried Carbones, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Quinn, her husband and their kids are in New Orleans for Mardi Gras."

  • Spider Quinn 06: The Lawndale Files, by cfardellbrenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "Helen opened the door. 'Hello, Elisabeth. Stacy will be down shortly.'"

  • This is Not America, by ladyevil (part 5): "'Looks like they’ve split up.' Daria noted. 'Darn.' Jane said. 'That means we can’t watch them.'"

  • Titanic - A True Story, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 24 - 26): "So far, everyone kept following orders and the crazy situation still remained largely under control." (Part 25) (Part 26)

Anyone Here From the Planet Zippotron?

All of Lawndale appears to have turned out to celebrate Extraterrestrial Culture Day, and if we're lucky Daria and Jane will wear their alien space babe costumes. That's not likely, however, with the chance of Upchuck being present, so we'll just have to settle for Artie and his synthetic skin.

Someone should let Wind know that it's also Get a Different Name Day and he should feel free to change his name to Ronald now that the Naming Gazebo isn't standing in his way. Everyone else can either heed or ignore Jake's advice as they choose: "Walk away. You change your name, move to another state, get some ID. It's not too late to start over, Daria, it's not too late! You're still a young man! You don't have to live with your mistakes! Get out while you can!"

Don't worry. I'm not going to start shaking you.

Finally, I have good news for Daria and Tom. Not only is it Kiss Day, but also National Apology Day so they can go confess their mistake to Jane and hope for forgiveness. Maybe.

Anyone Know Where Helen Hides the Mop?

It seems that Jake won't be observing Don't Cry over Spilled Milk Day, because all of the milk is going down his throat. At least, it is for now. He's just one surprise credit card bill away from the mother of all spit takes!

If he does spill that milk and ends up starting a fire while cleaning it up, I hope that he remembers it's National Emergency Number Day and phones for help. The last thing he needs is another embarrassing "Helen! What's the number for 911?" moment.

While I realize that it's Get Out Your Guitar Day, please tell Trent to keep his instrument safely put away to avoid inflicting any auditory damage on innocent bystanders. If nothing else, he could at least celebrate National Van Day by getting into the Tank first and driving far, far away. Or at least as far as you can go in an unreliable vehicle like the Tank.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Betrothed, by easmith (parts 9 and 10): "Dylan wasn’t sure what he was expecting on their approach to the Atlantean home of Tíra, but a little wooden ranch on the side of an Idaho road was not it." (Part 10)

  • Parting Gift, by Rémi (parts 4 and 5): "'Anyway, Quinn, if this painting is going to bring back good memories for Daria, it’d be for the best if it brought back good memories of you.' suggested Jane." (Part 5)

  • runner's high, by notkimberlyerikson (COMPLETE!): "jane lane is a lanky thing. Her arms limbs sort of just hang off of her."

  • Titanic - A True Story, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 23): "That fateful night still seemed like everything was normal, at least for most of the passengers that had already been asleep when the iceberg incident took place."

  • Unnamed story (The 1002 Deaths of Tom Sloane), by Lady Evil (COMPLETE!): "Tom's feet ached as he walked the streets of Hell. Yes, streets. He was surprised to find that Hell had cars, streets, stores, restaurants and other businesses just like any city on Earth."

Tooth-Havers, Today We Feast!

The good news for Mr. D is that he won't have to worry about celebrating Toothache Day! The bad news is that he won't be celebrating Having Teeth At All day, either.

If he's able to get some replacement teeth--metal or otherwise--I hope he gets to observe National Pizza Day! Daria and Jane will doubtless be participating, but hopefully within reason. That extra quart of grease can really pack a wallop.

I think I lean more towards celebrating Chocolate Day, which will surprise no one in fandom who knows anything about me at all. I'm sure Mrs. Johanssen will be happy to join me, but I hope she doesn't expect me to share.

Run, Jump, and...Read!

Mr. DeMartino looks just darling as a ballerina for National Ballet Day, and who knew the man could move with such grace? Next time he loses his temper I think he should do a grand jeté right out the window to go on a hike.

While Mr. D dances, Jane will run because it's National Girls and Women in Sports Day! She could join the track team...for a little while, until her teammates and coach get on her nerves again.

Daria, on the other hand, will have none of this physical activity at all and would prefer to celebrate World Read Aloud Day. She could even read out loud at the Better Days Nursing Home, but I don't think it will end well.

Fanfic Update!
  • Avatar: The Drama Of Daria, by psychotol (part 11): "'Barch right?' asked a dark skinned blue eyed woman, interrupting Barches internal debate over whether or not to punch the wall she had been staring at and prompting her to look at the woman she knew from somewhere recently."

  • The Betrothed, by easmith (parts 7 and 8): "The empty canvas mocked Abby. She was standing in the main courtyard, lit by the early morning sunlight, in the midst of playing children, outdoor classes, and bustling servants." (Part 8)

  • Parting Gift, by Rémi (parts 2 and 3): "'Quinn ?' asked Daria in a tentative, somewhat hesitant tone. 'Do you have something to do, or do you want to watch some TV or something ?'" (Part 3)

  • Spider Quinn 06: The Lawndale Files, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "SpiderGirl wasn’t sure why Brittany wanted to talk to her. 'What’s up?' she asked."

"What Does Science Know?"

Seems the local news is helping us celebrate National Weatherman’s Day, and I hope they have good things to say about the weather forecast. If they try to warn Lawndale about an approaching hurricane, no one is likely to believe them.

Then again, if they do predict a hurricane it would be appropriate for Disaster Day, but not nearly as disastrous as wearing a cream-colored top to a Super Bowl party. Wait, that's not a disaster...it's a dip-saster!

On the subject of clothing faux pas, someone needs to tell the Fashion Club that it's International Clash Day, but don't mention that it refers to the band. I want to see them all show up in full fashion don't glory!

I Guess They're Tired of Frozen Lasagna!

Looks like there's no need to celebrate Feed the Birds Day today, as the "birds" (a.k.a. Jake and Helen) are taking care of it themselves. Or they're into some kind of new roleplaying exercise, in which case we should give them some privacy.

I hope Jane knows that it's American Painters Day, but it won't make much difference. I can't imagine her going even one day without painting, so today shouldn't be much different than any other for her.

Finally, even though it's National Missing Persons Day, I hope no one asks Quinn if she knows where Daria is. As she's already pointed out, she's not her sister's beeper.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Betrothed, by easmith (parts 5 and 6): "Anthony and Abby managed to keep their promise for the next couple of hours as the car wound its way through ever more mountainous territory, keeping their conversation to pleasant topics of family and friends and home." (Part 6)

  • Spider Quinn: 06 The Lawndale Files, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "It was Assembly time at Lawndale High. Principal Angela Li came to the podium."

  • Titanic - A True Story, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 22): "The sudden and dreadful shaking soon came to an end, and after that, nothing..."

Let's Hope It's Only Temporary

Jake's all in for International Face and Body Art Day, and I think we're all grateful for those boxer shorts. I hope Trent celebrates by finding a new tattoo from a magazine!

Meanwhile, Jane should get out those art supplies and try out a new gummi bear-themed piece because it's Decorating With Candy Day! Just make sure Tom keeps his distance, or at least have some alternate snacks available at all times.

I have a good feeling about Jane's chances of success, but that may only be because it's Optimist Day. We should check in with Daria and see if she still sees that soda glass as half-empty.
