"Ooh, la la. Doctor, I have a pain."

Dr. Phillips seems to be in a good mood. Either he finally figured out what caused Daria's rash or he's just happy that it's National Doctor's Day.

Today is also a good day for artist's birthdays: both Francisco Goya and Vincent van Gogh were born on this day in 1746 and 1853. Jane seems pretty knowledgeable about both: she filled Daria in on who Goya was in "The New Kid" and painted a topsy-turvy van Gogh in "Art Burn." Just don't ask her to paint any more reproductions.

This Might Explain Some of His Song Lyrics

Looks like Trent's already started celebrating Weed Appreciation Day, but someone should tell him that the holiday actually refers to the kind of weeds you pull in your garden. However, in his current state, he probably wouldn't care. Less than a month left until 4/20, man. Just hang in there.

Fanfic Update!
  • Beat It, by metameric1 (part 3): "Jack closed the door to the drum room, and looked around for Trent. Through the double-glazed picture window Daria was visible, tearing into a smallish Premier kit with a woofer doubling the length of the kick drum."

  • Chemistry, by Captain Marbles (part 4): "The girl known to the staff as Esmerelda Schwartz, niece of Tycho Owen awoke. She yawned and stretched, then called room service for some breakfast."

  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 6): "It became a suddenly bad day when Ms Barch decided to break up Brittany and Kevin for a science project, and landed Daria with the thick-headed footballer."

  • Dystopia, by mailorderannie (part 4): "Daria crossed her arms. 'I'll repeat myself. Do we have a plan? For that matter, are we still safe here? With no honest media around to report on it, what's to stop whoever's in charge of this sector -'"

  • Hana Hou, Pt 2, by metameric1 (part 9): "Trent had to smile when he glanced out the kitchen window. 'Hey, Daria,' 'Hm?' 'The treehouse looks pretty cool. I like the tie-dyed shades and the macramé planter things hanging underneath.'"

  • James the Lesser Presents Vinny Lane, by James the Lesser (part 34): "Vinny isn't sure what Ms. Li said over the intercom as classes ended but Daria heard it. 'A meeting, on Super Bowl Sunday, announced at the end of the day. She's up to something.'"

  • Moonstruck Dumb, by EntrancedCat (part 2): "Sandi Griffin adjusted her regulation green toque, outer layer made from the finest Mongolian cashmere with soft breathable Lunar-made liner, to better protect her delicate earlobes from the early winter breeze off Lake Michigan."

  • Pale Pink, by Missy (COMPLETE!): "'Oh my gosh. OH MY GOSH I CAN'T FIND THE LAST TUBE OF SUPER CREAMY DREAM WHIPSTICK IN BABY PINK!'"

  • Run Jodie Run, by DIsaac (parts 4 and 5): "KYLE ARMALIN (Lead Anchor for WLWN-TV): I'm Kyle Armalin, Reporting from the Lawndale 5 Newsroom. We have just received some major breaking news on the Mayor Edwards Investigation." (Part 5)

  • Unnamed story (IC Runaway Daria), by Waylander (part 4): "'...I return to the hotel room and find the message from One-Eye. I have to return to New York ASAP. Of course my vacation was ruined. I swear he enjoys it!'"

Do You Have to Make Up Your Own Greeting Card, Too?

Daria's thinking hard to come up with a good idea for Make Up Your Own Holiday Day, and I suspect she'll come up with something along the lines of "National Leave Me the Hell Alone Day." A wise choice, if you ask me.

This is also the fifteenth anniversary of the episode "Lucky Strike," which aired on this day in 2001. Maybe Daria should make up a holiday about hiring qualified teachers instead of students to cover during teacher strikes.

Three Magical Anniversaries

Upchuck's preparing for his big moment to emulate Harry Houdini, who was born on this day in 1874. Although both have performed daring escapes to impress their audiences, only Upchuck left his spectators disappointed that he survived.

Today is also the anniversary of not one but three Daria episodes: "Cafe Disaffecto" in 1997, "The Lost Girls" in 1999, and "The F Word" in 2000. You know, I suspect that if Mr. O'Neill had sent one of Daria's Melody Powers stories into Val Magazine instead, Daria wouldn't have won the "Spend a Day with Val" contest. You might say he would have succeeded at failing.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (parts 2 and 3): "'Is it going to be a boy baby or a girl baby?' said Quinn. 'I don't know yet,' said Helen. 'It's going to be a girl,' said Daria. She didn't know how, but she knew." (Part 3)

  • Dystopia, by mailorderannie (part 3): "Brittany grabbed Daria's arm. 'C'mon!' she said in a low voice. 'But - ' Daria gestured to what had been the Guardian building."

  • Lawndale 2021 Season Three, by Anguirus1955 (part 9): "It was just a quarter past five in the morning, when that dreadful sound woke me from my slumber. The hell?"

  • Mysteries of Lawndale 03: Night of the Coffee House, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 3): "It was quarter past six when the group entered Viv's videos, and business was raging. There was a large number of customers in the store. 'This is going to be difficult,' Daria said."

  • A New Set of Rules, by Dennis (part 28): "Things with Colleen were back to normal with Colleen by the next morning. Daria wished she could say the same thing about Kevin."

  • Run Jodie Run, by DIsaac (parts 1 - 3): "'...That is why I'm announcing I, Jodie Abigail Landon, Will be running to be your next mayor of Lawndale! Just as I said eight years ago... I need your help to make this happen...'" (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Standstill, by Princess_Pasta (part 1): "It was a perfectly ordinary Wednesday afternoon, the sky overcast and dreary, early morning chill hanging in the air. Daria Morgendorffer was, predictably, late."

  • Trent (Iron Chef : The another Lane vocation), by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "The coins tintled as they fell on the open guitar case. 'Thank you, man,' said Trent. The donor smiled a little before continuing on his way."

  • Vincent (Iron Chef : The another Lane vocation), by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "The young man stood up, straightened his uniform, carefully examined his shoes, trousers and hands for any stains, dirt or wrinkles, and then knocked on the door."

  • Wind (Iron Chef : The another Lane vocation), by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "The four men and two women stand straight and unmoving, watching the bus crawl up the road. Their kahi skirts and army green trousers and skirts fall down in straight lines."

Amy, Stop or Your Face Will Stick Like That!

Amy's got the right idea for National Goof Off Day, although I'm not sure if her niece's wedding is really the best place for it. I suppose if the mood strikes, you just have to make a silly face.

Today is also World Water Day, but I don't recommend going on any school fundraising casino boats in celebration. You might end up much closer to the water than you'd like.

What Story Will You Tell?

Daria's celebrating World Storytelling Day by sharing some...interesting...reading material with her classmates. You can celebrate however you like: reading to seniors, putting a new spin on old fairy tales for the Gupty kids, or scaring the hell out of your family around a campfire. Daria's tried them all, so now it's your turn!

Fanfic Update!
  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 5): "'Good morning!' Ms Li called as she opened the door to the classroom. It was about seven minutes past ten, and O'Neill had already tried to suggest that Thoreau was a pioneer of the conservationist movement, and Brittany had showed that she'd watched the movie rather than read the book, and, as usual, didn't get the point."

  • Daria Morgendorffer as a practical politician, by Szcz (COMPLETE!): "Daria Morgendorffer sat in the old fashioned leather armchair, laid her legs in Doc Martens boots on the coffee table. In her hands, miss senator of the state twiddled a lash."

  • Dystopia, by mailorderannie (part 2): "Daria went to the door, and after looking through the eyehole, opened it, and let the caller in. 'I didn't think they'd send you,' she said. 'I thought you'd be opposed to helping brains on general principles.'"

  • Shadows of a Timeless Song, by Dennis (part 12): "Silence reigned until Tom the barman returned and showed them upstairs. Wordlessly, he opened the door on a good-sized room with two four-poster beds and a large bay window from which Daria could see the night sky."

  • Take a Walk in my Shoes, by DIsaac (part 5.5): "NARRATOR: We all have dreams. Daria has her dream of being a writer. Brittany's dream is actually to be in science which would be weird if you really didn't know her at all."

Don't Look So Smug, Jodie!

Jodie's pretending she's taking the first spacewalk, but in reality that honor goes to Russian cosmonaut Alexey Leonov on this day in 1965. Just this once, Jodie, you have to settle for second best. I hope your ego can handle it.

That Was Even Further Back Then, This is Still Dumb

Helen, Jake, Willow, and Coyote are meeting up to celebrate the anniversary of the episode "That Was Then, This is Dumb," which aired on this day in 1998. I suppose a modern-day version of this episode would posit the Morgendorffers and the Yeagers as products of the 80s, which could be a whole new level of terrifying depending on which subculture you go with.

Fanfic Update!
  • Chemistry, by Captain Marbles (COMPLETE!): "Several minutes earlier, high in the sky above the action. Wildcat to Ultra--M is down!"

  • Dystopia, by mailorderannie (COMPLETE!): "Jane turned around, just outside the passenger terminal. 'Are you sure that you can't come with, amiga?' A wry grin graced her countenance."

  • End (Ideas!), by Princess_Pasta (part 1): "In the blink of an eye, he was gone."

  • For You, by metameric1 (COMPLETE!): "Coffee already made? No weird noises from her roomie's bedroom, not that she'd expected any."

  • James the Lesser Presents Vinny Lane, by James the Lesser (part 33): "Christmas was coming and Vinny was losing his mind. He went through Christmas before but never with a girlfriend."

  • Lawndale 2021 Season Three, by Anguirus1955 (part 8): "In the office of Helen Birdwoman, located in the upper floors of the main building of Sebben & Sebben, Helen 'Birdwoman' Morgendorffer neatly shuffled several papers into a folder."

  • Moonstruck Dumb, by EntrancedCat (COMPLETE!): "Only a few minutes after the flying saucers landed on the grass of the commons area shortly after the seniors had finished their lunch period, the US military surrounded Lawndale High."

  • Sisters and Friends, by metameric1 (part 28): "Quinn looked up from the dinner table. 'You guys are moving out?' Oh no! Where to? I've gotten so used to having Daria, Jane and Trent around--at least, just across the street...no more weekly dinners?"

  • Songs About Jane Lane, by with caution (part 2): "A few hours of painting later and Jane was finished with her latest masterpiece, unusually satisfied."

  • The Storm, by dmsfanman (part 1): "'I'm just about to leave for home, Daria. Have you decided what you are going to do yet?' Quinn said in her typically high pitched voice that almost sounded like a whine."

  • Trouble in the Future, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "It had been a long day. After the second day of Orientation 'O' Week, Leigh Steinhardt was ready to go to sleep. However, there was a knock at the door."

  • You'll Know When You Have Kids of Your Own, by metameric1 (part 12): "Bob Coleman smiled as he slowly made his way to the kitchen door. Opening it, he saw Rusty along with two other girls her age and a boy, who was pushing a hand truck loaded down with some equipment."

Mmm...Butterfly Pie

Daria's here to help teach us because it's Learn about Butterflies Day. Jane already knows all she needs to know about them: if you try to hold one tightly in your hand, it will blah, blah, blah. Whether or not she's tested her theory regarding tearing off its precious little wings is unknown.

For the math geeks out there, this is also National Pi Day. Celebrate by calculating the circumference of a circle, or by eating a nice piece of pie. Your call.

A Scene from the Rougher Side of Jane's Past

This troop of little cuties is taking National Girl Scout Day to something of an extreme, but perhaps that will be a lesson to all about what happens when you fail to pay off your Girl Scout Cookie debt. Jane Lane learned that one all too well.

This is also the fifteenth anniversary of the episode "Camp Fear," which aired on this day in 2001. There weren't any Girl Scouts in that one, but there were some high-priced cookies courtesy of Earl and Barbara.

Fanfic Update!
  • Bullying A Dragon, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "'Nice cup. You always have your tea in a fancy cup.'"

  • Chemistry, by Captain Marbles (part 2): "'All right, Cadets Vargas--Robertson, you understand the mission?' 'Yes, Admiral Harriman!' 'Then get to it--and good luck.'"

  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 4): "'A hundred miles? To go to a mall?!' Jake demanded. 'Dammit, there's a mall five minutes away!'"

  • Fever Dreams, by mabel (COMPLETE!): "After the break up with Daria... things got heavy. Bromwell was a first rate school, and no amount of old money could keep Tom enrolled if he did not pass his classes."

  • Just Living My Life, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "People would always try to say things about the LGBT members of the Legion. One day, on some show, some loudmouth in the audience tried to shout her way into a conversation and shout Daria down when she mentioned that she had no problem with any of her fellow Legionnaires being gay."

  • Lawndale 2021 Season Three, by Anguirus1955 (part 7): "'Gentlemen! I have finished my nap! Now, to unveil my latest creation!' Dr. Weird announced as he walked into his lab."

  • No, by mabel (COMPLETE!): "Daria liked to joke about Helen's lack of parenting; this was obvious to everyone in the Morgendorffer household besides Jake."

  • Party at 111 Howard (Iron Chef: Party at Casa Lane), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "'Did I hear you right?' Daria Morgendorffer asked her friend Jane Lane as they arrived at school. 'You're having a party?' 'That's right.'"

  • Songs About Jane Lane, by with caution (COMPLETE!): "'Later, Daria.' Jane shut the door of Casa Lane and walked into the kitchen."

  • Sonoma Coma, by jtranser (part 22): "In an abandoned steam whistle factory in the Swiss canton of Bern, tormented ship rivets were quietly sobbing steel tears as Upchuck's brass band played the evil polka of violence."

Yet Another Category Where They're in the Minority

Jodie and Mack aren't actually very proud about their middle names for Middle Name Pride Day, but if you had a name like Mack's you'd probably feel the same way. As far as I can remember, Mack (Jordan) and Jodie (Abigail) are the only Daria characters who have official middle names. If you know of any others, let me know in the comments.

Today is also a triple anniversary for episodes, as "The Invitation," "Depth Takes a Holiday," and "A Tree Grows in Lawndale" all aired on this day in 1997, 1999, and 2000.

"Today I'll be the perfect working wife and mother!"

Helen's taking time out of her busy day to celebrate International (Working) Women's Day, but I give her about thirty seconds, max, before she goes back to working her twelve-hour shift. Even less if Eric shows up or her cell phone rings. Still, it looks like a fun break while it lasts.

Fanfic Update!
  • Changes, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "As one goes through life, there are changes in the way that person lives. As the person grows, their identity grows and changes as they mature."

  • Chemistry, by Captain Marbles (COMPLETE!): "Karen 'Burnout' Disher woke up feeling normal for the first time since the mosquito bite. Her brain had been on a roller coaster of highs and hallucinations interspersed with violent bouts of nausea for weeks, but that seemed to be over."

  • Maternal, by Indigo (part 4): "Daria and Jane were in Daria's room when Helen decided to bring them a snack. She did not intend to eavesdrop, but as she neared the door, she could hear Jane trying to talk Daria into something."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef : MMORPG, Lawndale style), by Waylander (part 15): "It was a vicious and exhausting battle, but in the end Darlene triumphed over the combined forces of Dust, Grime, and Cobwebs."

  • You'll Know When You Have Kids of Your Own, by metameric1 (part 11): "Dammit to Hell. Jake stopped the winding machine and decided to hang it up for the day."

I'll Just Live With the Cavities, Thanks

Mr. O'Neill has apparently taken on a second job in honor of National Dentist's Day. However, if he's anywhere near as incompetent as a dentist as he was as a teacher, then I wouldn't let that man within a mile of my teeth.

I'm sure the Morgendorffers would be happy to know that today is also National Frozen Food Day, so their usual meal of frozen lasagna is actually appropriate today.

Theresa's Big Day

Theresa looks pretty underwhelmed here, but she should be celebrating National Salesperson Day! It's also Employee Appreciation Day, but I suspect not even the double holiday will earn her any extra respect from the Fashion Club.

Fanfic Update!
  • Action Stories #6: Struck by Lightning, by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): "'A parade!' Livewire said, clapping her hands with delight. 'I love parades!'" (Part 7)

  • ASPS reboot, by PrecambrianStudios (part 1): "'So, here's what we do!' Rachel Ng splayed out a carefully drawn diagram on the table before the small audience contained within the cramped confines of their host's dimly-lit dorm room."

  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 3): "'Hey Daria, you're a chick, right?' Kevin asked when she went to her locker to get her books. He'd been leaning against hers, so she had, unfortunately, had to announce her presence in order to get him to move."

  • Lawndale 2021 Season Three, by Anguirus1955 (part 6): "Daria Morgendorffer looked down at the food on her plate. 'Are you sure that this is edible?' she asked Quinn."

  • Mad Dog or Damned God, by baelparagon (COMPLETE!): "It was a rainy fall Friday evening in Highland Texas in the Morgendorffer residence. Mr. Morgendorffer was reclining in his chair reading the paper while Mrs. Morgendorffer was cooking in the kitchen."

  • Perception, by Princess_Pasta (part 5): "Fall was finally starting to make its presence known after several long weeks of unbearably warm weather and Kevin fully intended to make the most of it."

Old Stuff, Old Episode

It's Old Stuff Day, and Helen and Jake are diving right in--literally, in Jake's case. I'm not sure what you're supposed to do with old stuff today, but there it is. It's stuff, and it's old. Enjoy.

This is also the anniversary of the episode "Quinn the Brain," which first aired on this day in 1998. Daria and Quinn each dabbled briefly in the other's world, then scurried safely back to their assigned roles.
