How About Reading Across the Living Room?

You might think that Daria is celebrating Read Across America Day, but really she's only interested in Reading Quietly in Solitude Day. The rest of the country can just keep its distance, please and thank you.

If she decides to take a break and wants to earn some money, then she could always man another flea market stand with Jane in honor of Old Stuff Day. On second thought, it might be better to just stay put and avoid the hassle.

On this day in 1998, the episode "Quinn the Brain" first aired. Quinn tried out being "smart" for awhile, and all of fandom melted down over whether or not Daria taking her glasses off and wearing a pink T-shirt made her suddenly hot.

Like You Need an Excuse for a Good Book

Daria is not exactly celebrating Read Across America Day, but she is enjoying Read Quietly At Home Day, and that's just as good. Feel free to join in yourself, even if you aren't in America!

However, if you'd like to become an American then today's the right day for it because it's also American Citizenship Day! I hope Mr. DeMartino has his paperwork in order just in case Ms. Barch decides to be extra spiteful again.

On this day in 1998, the episode "Quinn the Brain" first aired and kicked off the debate that would never end for fandom: is Daria secretly smoking hot? Long after the seas have boiled away and the sun has gone supernova, there will be fans debating this very important issue.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Enrolls At Nevermore: An Experiment, by Meester_Lee (part 14): "Catherine’s reaction was worth the bother of transfiguration. She walked into Enid’s dorm room, scowled at Enid, then did a double-take when she saw what was sharing Enid’s bed."

  • Daria On The Trail, by meesterlee (part 58): "Mr. Parkhurst and I decided not to talk about Mammoths until we completed our descent from the summit of Salt River Pass, which was a wise move on our part."

  • Homecoming, by DavidFalkayn (part 2): "'So...how are you holding up? Really.' Jane Lane, working furiously on her painting, brush strokes wild and chaotic reflecting the Lovecraftian atmosphere of the painting, asked, the teen artist’s voice tone tinged with worry for her auburn-haired best friend lying on the bed, looking up at the ceiling."

  • Parting Gift, by RĂ©mi (parts 8 and 9): "Daria Morgendorffer was moping in her room. She was sitting on her bed, more prostrate than ever." (Part 9)

  • Spider Quinn 07: Ashes to Ashes, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "Sandi didn’t believe her eyes when she saw Stacy and Quinn approaching."

  • Titanic - A True Story, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 32 and 33): "Anna Coulthard thought that the stars she loved had never looked so strange in her life." (Part 33)

It's Not Old, It's Vintage!

Upchuck, Daria, and Jane seem to be celebrating Old Stuff Day, but really Daria and Jane are trying to either unload their old stuff on Upchuck or just make him go away. The old stuff doesn't really get a lot of appreciation in this scene.

Just a reminder that today is also American Citizenship Day, and Mr. DeMartino really needs to make sure his paperwork is in order. You never know when Ms. Barch will get it into her head to make another anonymous tip.

Finally, it's been twenty-five years since "Quinn the Brain" first aired, and fandom still hasn't gotten over the "is Daria suddenly hot if she wears Quinn's clothes" debate. Ah, well. Anyone for popcorn?

Time to Go Through Your Unused Junk!

Jake and Helen are having a little stroll down Memory Lane for Old Stuff Day! They'd better be careful, because from there it's a very easy detour onto Massive Argument Boulevard.

Hey, speaking of arguments, today is also the anniversary of the episode "Quinn the Brain" on this day in 1998. Fandom has debated over whether Daria changing into Quinn's outfit means she's secretly super hot for so long that I'm surprised the debate hasn't shifted to whether that dead horse smeared on the ground is super hot.

Fanfic Update!
  • American Pie, by Lady Evil (part 1): "Alfred read the note that had been slipped in his locker."

  • Garden Variety (Linn's short stories (or ficlets, drabbles...)), by linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "It was a beautiful Wednesday afternoon, and one of the days Rose had devoted to volunteering at the Landon Community Garden. She was particularly excited this time because Trent and his sister Jane were meeting her there."

  • Party in the USA, by Lady Evil (part 3): "Quinn crouched behind the ceramic tiger and came up with a plan. It was a simple one. All she had to do was untie one of her rose dawn suede Vans, pretend to trip over a lace and let Alfred catch her."

  • Perfection, by Tentaculiferous (COMPLETE!): "Quinn was so perfect. Stacy was staring at her bouncy sleek red hair hanging over the desk in front of her, tuning out Mr. DeMartino’s rants in favor of a more pleasing subject: Quinn."

  • The Wedding Wringer (General "Daria in Morrowind" Thread), by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "'Hey, are you hungry? Huh?' Not that Satheri needed to ask. Tollie always wanted a snack."

A Good Day to Sell Stuff

Daria and Jane have plenty of supplies ready for Old Stuff Day, but it's hard to say whether they're going to be able to get rid of it. Good luck, girls!

The Fashion Club members, meanwhile, are probably buying new stuff at Cashman's today, and I hope they remember to wish Theresa a happy National Salesperson Day. Not that they're likely to treat her any better today than any other day, but it would be a nice gesture.

Finally, it was on this day twenty years ago that the episode "Quinn the Brain" first aired. This episode is the main source of evidence for those who argue that Daria is at least as physically attractive as Quinn because of the "makeover" scene, although for some reason no one ever seems to make the argument that Quinn is at least as smart as Daria because of her "essay."

Fanfic Update!
  • Accept No Substitute (Quinn, Season 3), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "The economics teacher, Mr. Keller (Ms. Bennett was fired for her role in Ms. Li's embezzlement), was lecturing the class. Mr. Keller was balding 60 year old with a beer gut." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Of Microwaves and Electric Keyboards, by Souless Familliar (part 1): "Jane never thought that a microwave could do so much damage, but here she was, moping the dark roads of Lawndale at one in the morning, all because the microwave had exploded, burning the whole of Casa Lane's downstairs."

  • Sick, Sad World, by writerfromzero (part 1): "About to take the math books from his locker for his next class, Morty was less than surprised to suddenly see his grandfather standing in the school hallway, boasting his usual drunken state, ranting and raving, hardly ever coming to a halt."

  • Sonoma Coma, by jtranser (COMPLETE!): "'Oh Jane. What did I tell you about watching apocalyptic movies? You know it's like crack for the gods. You start watching and before you finish the third bowl of popcorn, a long line of demented liberator wannabes show up at your house, park on your lawn and demand an audition. It's just not worth the risk.'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef - Sticky Situation), by Szcz (COMPLETE!): "INT. Around 2013. A dark room in New York. Two men are lying on the bed. One of them is Charles Ruttheimer, wearing a smoking. Next to him is Daria, wearing a thin roll-neck sweater and black leggings. There is a notebook computer on a stool near Daria's side."

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries : Thread #2), by Roentgen and Brother Grimace (parts 105 - 109): "Annett Zimmer sat miserably on a bench in the lobby of Legion Tower. She was the only person in the lobby, aside from one bored security guard and the each paid the minimal amount of attention to each other." (Part 106 by Brother Grimace) (Part 107 by Roentgen) (Part 108 by Brother Grimace) (Part 109 by Brother Grimace)

Old Stuff, Old Episode

It's Old Stuff Day, and Helen and Jake are diving right in--literally, in Jake's case. I'm not sure what you're supposed to do with old stuff today, but there it is. It's stuff, and it's old. Enjoy.

This is also the anniversary of the episode "Quinn the Brain," which first aired on this day in 1998. Daria and Quinn each dabbled briefly in the other's world, then scurried safely back to their assigned roles.

The Kook in the Book

Today is a Ted-a-riffic day, because both DeWitt Clinton, the American politician that Ted DeWitt-Clinton was likely named after, and Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, were born on this day in 1769 and 1904. I have no idea if Ted's ever read "The Cat in the Hat," but I'm sure his parents would condemn it as an empty offering of society or something like that.

Also on this day in 1998, the episode "Quinn the Brain" first aired and taught us that Daria and Quinn should never venture outside of their prescribed roles. Until season four, anyway.

Appreciation? Yeah, Right!

Today is both Employee Appreciation Day and National Salesperson Day, but no matter how many holidays you stack up, poor Theresa still does not get paid enough to deal with the Fashion Club's constant demands. Maybe one of these days she and Marianne could get together for drinks and decide who has the worst job.

This is also the anniversary of the original air date of "Quinn the Brain" in 1998. I'll always wonder what might have happened if, instead of quashing her sister's attempt to use her mind, Daria had encouraged her to go even further and move past the superficial. Then again, I suspect it would have ended with the Morgendorffer sisters crushing the entire world under their heels, so maybe it's best that it worked out the way it did.

Fanfic Update!
  • A Distant Lawndale, by Arena del Sur (part 5): "And so, step by step, things were changing around me. The way things happened began to move away from what had been... A little more day after day, which was easy for me to see... What was I going to become? If my past was changing, the future could be different. That idea was freaking me out."

  • At the Crossroads...(Chapter 7), by oni (part 1): "''Do you know where your daughter is right now?' With venom in her voice, Linda replied, 'I don’t know Helen, in her room?' Anger bellowed out of Helen’s voice as she said, 'She’s over here scared out of her mind Linda!'"

  • Bleeding Red (Angst Off!, Part 3), by mmmdraco (COMPLETE!): "'Hey, Danny. 'Sup?' Jesse scratched his head and blinked to make his little brother come into focus from messy hair to Mystik Spiral t-shirt to Doc Martens. 'You've got to get me over to Link's house as fast as you can. He said he was going to slit his wrists!' 'Um, I can't. No wheels. Besides, I'm sure he doesn't mean it.' Jesse yawned. 'Think I'll get a little more sleep.' He lay back down and shut his eyes."

  • Does This Make Me Look Fat (Iron Chef: The Wish endings), by Reven384 (COMPLETE!): "'I...want....my....prizee,' Tiffany drawled out in her slow way of talking. 'So you want to be the skinniest member of the fashion club,' Calypso said, 'That's easy enough.'"

  • The House of Cards, by Doggieboy (part 8): "Conrad Hawkins snorted and sighed as he looked up at his daughter. 'Baby girl, did you really think that you were going on the hunt for John - with Dr. Ryan’s help - but without myself or your mother knowing anything about it? Or even allowing it?' The redheaded teen then turned on her father. 'I lost him once and I will not lose him again! The only reasons I haven’t told either of you two is because I’m afraid that you’d try to stop me...or attempt to kill him again. After all, you did try to blow his head off.'"

  • I Donut (Pie, Pie, My Darling), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "'Amy, how delightful,' Rita lied. 'I thought you weren't coming.' 'I wasn't, but then I remembered weddings have cake, so I decided to put aside years of bitterness and resentment. All for delicious, delicious cake.' Daria began to salivate at the reminder of the cakey future."

  • (i thought) We Were Friends Until Yesterday (Angst Off!, Part 3), by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): "'Brittany’s just a pain; I only hang out with her because I feel sorry for her.' Those were the exact words she heard. Perhaps sarcasm; no, those where the true feelings spoken in confidence."

  • Melody Powers and the Crystal Boutique (Iron Chef: To kill a Mockingbird), by BF110C4 (COMPLETE!): "To see Daria on a public setting was a weird occurrence by itself, the fact that it was a school related activity make it even weirder, but what make such an appearance a truly bizarre even worthy of an special episode of Sick, Sad World was the sight of the small writer standing on the stage. On her hand was her latest story, a legal thriller, just without the legal part, and with mindless violence thrown in for fun, perfect for teens with a short attention span."

  • Ms. Barch's Revenge and Anthony's Dream (Iron Chef: The Wish endings), by Reven384 (COMPLETE!): "'So you want to give your ex what he deserves,' Calypso said. 'That man will pay and so will his little hussy!' Barch said. 'But in exchange you must give up your current man,' Calypso said holding a picture of Timothy O'neil."

  • Relaxation (Iron Chef: The Wish endings), by Reven384 (COMPLETE!): "Jodie was exhausted but she'd won, 'Calypso I demand my prize!' 'You wish for a life where you don't have so much stress on your plate. You want to rest and relax,' Calypso said smiling ominously, 'There is only one way that can happen.'"

  • Rude Awakening Ep.10: Sandi vs The EPT, by DIsaac (part 4): "UPCHUCK: Good. You must be desperate if you're asking me for help? BRITTANY: Charles, you're my only hope here to talk with him. (Brittany steps forward) UPCHUCK: Stop or I’ll spray."

  • Sandi's Beauty (Iron Chef: The Wish endings), by Reven384 (COMPLETE!): "'So you wish for beauty that will never tarnish or be surpassed,' Calypso said, 'But you should be wary. Such beauty comes at a price.'"

  • Sandi :: Well... This Sucks :: Chapter 8, by Fhujeth_x (parts 1 - 3): "Remembering back to her books she remembered something about werewolves locking themselves up on a full moon, to prevent them from doing harm unto others. Caged like a filthy animal in a dirty trap, being forced to remain stuck until daylight. 'Like Hell I will.'" (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Twisted Metal "The Lawndale Edition" Ending Two (Iron Chef: The Wish endings), by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): "Stacy stood in front of Calypso; she was the winner and she was ready to claim her prize; after all that blood and all the fear she could have anything...Except she wasn’t sure what she wanted..."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria Inspired by Different Movies), by Greystar (COMPLETE!): "'My company offers state of the art artificial organ technology with payment plans for every budget, Mr. Morgendorffer,' the Terry Perry Barlow said to Jake as he lay in the cardiac unit of Cedars of Lawndale. 'I don't know, Terry,' Jake said warily as he looked over the contract that he had been given. 'The doctor said that there was only a little minor damage and that it would heal over time.'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef - Goddess of Sarcasm), by Angelinhel (COMPLETE!): "Daria just blinked. She had the oddest sense of deja-vu, but other than in a dream she couldn't possibly imagine where she would have encountered a similar situation. What she could only describe to herself as some sort of angel was standing at the foot of her bed, though her enormous wings were a glossy gunmetal grey instead of white. Odder still, she was wearing what were clearly an old pair of jeans and a rather nondescript t-shirt."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: I Met Myself on the Way to the Town Square), by RX-87 (COMPLETE!): "I still have nightmares about that goddamn thing's teeth. They weren't human. I swear, they stretched all the way out past where its jaws should have ended. Much as it pains me to admit it, I screamed and ran out of there."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Psycho Therapy), by januense (COMPLETE!): "'WHAT? Ehr ... ehm. Quinn ... I know that some things I said can appear a little sour to you but I swear I was only concerned about you a...' 'MOM!! There's no need to be sorry ... I mean ... I'm the wrong one.' 'Oh ... Quinn ... can you ... elaborate ?'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: The Wish endings), by ThanatosRW (COMPLETE!): "'So Kevin, you wanna be in the NFL, right? Your wish is granted'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: The Wish endings), by ThanatosRW (COMPLETE!): "I had won the Twisted Metal tournament. It was kinda fun, might do it again sometime. • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: The Wish endings), by Vukodlak (COMPLETE!): "The monster truck skidded to a stop infront of Calypsos throne of broken car parts. Beavis and Butthead stumbled out plastered and laughing. 'Explosions are cool!' Butthead laughed"

  • Upchuck's Harem (Iron Chef: The Wish endings), by Reven384 (COMPLETE!): "'Calypso I demand my wish,' Charles said with barely contained glee. 'You're desire is for a harem of girls who will do anything you ask without question,' Calypso said. 'Yes!' Charles exclaimed."

  • Wish Endings (Collected responses to Iron Chef: The Wish endings), by BrownEyedBagel (COMPLETE!): "'I had won the Twisted Metal competition. I had just barely got out of it alive, but my resolve was never stronger. I had to get my wish. Nothing mattered except the future I had in mind. The Sloans always get what they want, one way or another. I was determined to keep the family tradition going....'"

  • The Wrath Universe Ch. 1 New Life, Old Life, by ST91 (part 1): "'Girls, I just want you to know your mother and I realize it's not easy moving to a whole new town... especially for you, Daria, right?' said Jake Morgendorffer towards his eldest daughter while driving his blue Lexus. Especially for you, Daria, right? Of course because I’m only a socially retarded Quinn, right, Dad?"

Water, Water, Everywhere, But I Goof Off and I Don't Care

Once again it is the World Day for Water, a.k.a. World Water Day, and we have young Daria and Beavis at the Highland High pool to show how World Water Day is done (wetly). The scene is from the Beavis and Butt-head episode "Water Safety."

It is also International Goof Off Day, however you wish to celebrate that. Daria likes to look at the world upside down, but your mileage may vary.

Foxy Daria and Deep Quinn, Back Again!

Today marks the twelfth anniversary of the premiere of "Quinn the Brain," which was designed to fool everyone into thinking Quinn had brains upstairs instead of a fish hatchery. Want proof? Let's read some of Quinn's best poetry: Poem #1, Poem #2, Poem #3. I think we're done here.

And Daria isn't all that hawt, either. Get over it.

If you do want to believe Quinn is smart, then you should know today is also National Reading Day, so go read something in her honor.

This is also Texas Independence Day, which Daria and Quinn would easily recall from their time in Highland, because they got the day off from school.

SPECIAL IMAGE FOR JIM NORTH! Jim asked for the largest Birth of Venus image I could get with Jane in it, from the Daria's Inferno game, and here it is (click link). You'll have to erase Daria and blow up the image, but that's it.

PPMB
  • collar, by Jim North (continued): Stacy set the phone back in its cradle and felt as if she'd entered a state of shock. Too many emotions were trying to make their way to the surface, leaving her temporarily unable to feel anything. She sat, staring at the wall until slowly, very slowly, a grin spread across her face. [NEW! Next section up: "I guess that leaves the decision up to me, then," Sandi said quietly. Stacy nodded and looked down again. She sniffled and felt the tears starting to come in earnest when Sandi stood up, crossed the room, and wrapped her up in a tight embrace. She returned the hug, pushing her face into Sandi's collar as the other woman stroked her hair. "I love you," Stacy cried into Sandi's shoulder. It sounded like a plea.]
  • Daria: Hunter 6—Infectious, by Jim North (continued): Jane walked back over to Daria. "Gosh, it's Little Miss Hardass," the shorter woman deadpanned. "Can I have your autograph?" [NEW! Next section up: The thing that used to be a woman pressed in on its intended victim. Jane grabbed its arms at the wrists, but it leaned in, mouth slavering, and bit down on Jane's collarbone. Jane growled through her teeth, then yelled, "Shoot it! Shoot it! Somebody shoot it!"]
  • NEW! Esteemsters: 4chan Edition, by TAG (THREAD 404'D!!!1!1!!!11!): "...Then byotch outs me as a megatrap rite b4 Pedo’Neill is 404’d, sk00l burnz down, & SWAT teemz pwnz teh survivorz. I am so NOT okay w/ this thread!" (SFMB)
  • Falling into College 72: Valley of Love and Delight, by RLobinske (Part 11): "Don't blame that loose dog on me," Daria said. "And don't blame me for breaking things up before you really hurt it."
  • Finn Morgendorffer 35: The Fat Chick, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 1): “Gee, Stacy, what an interesting selection of perfume you have purchased today.” Sandi remarked, looking at the bag Stacy was holding. “It’s almost as if you don’t care it’s a knockoff of a more noteworthy French brand.” Sandi always knew how to craft insults. It was quite the talent.
  • The Hallowed Halls of Fielding, by Roentgen (Part 11): "Go away, ginger girl." "Dah-RIA.... can't two sisters just... you know... chat?" "The last time I heard the story, I was an escaped Russian mail-order bride that adopted the Morgendorffer name and that was living in the basement. I must have done something really special to be upgraded to 'sister'. Either that, or you want something?" "Daria... I need to know some tricks. Some study tricks." "Silly rabbit. You think I have a magic wand shoved up my butt?"
  • Into the Fray, by Minx (Part 6): “Don’t move,” Trent spoke in a low, calm tone. Quinn, Daria and Jesse stared in shock, mouths agape at Trent’s bold decision. The man whimpered, but remained still except for his quivering hands, his fingers still holding his zipper. “Please don’t shoot me,” the man pleaded in a high pitched whimper.
  • It's All About the Intention, by Psychotol (COMPLETE!): “Daria, you’re a flag officer, what the hell were you doing getting shot at?” asked Helen, now angry. “I’m a Tasmanian Devil, I have to get some violence in every now and then,” said Daria.

"Is that thing radioactive?" "Isotope so!"

Today is the 142nd anniversary of the birth of Marie Curie, who studied radioactivity but wasn't as careful with her samples as she should have been. DON'T TRY TO FIND OUT IF RADIATION HAS A TASTE! DON'T CARRY RADIOACTIVE ITEMS IN YOUR POCKETS! That should do it. (Thanks to the almighty Pinhead for the image.)

Albert Camus would be 96 today had he not died in order to avoid seeing himself mentioned in "Quinn the Brain":
Quinn: By the way, do you know what existential means? Because today someone told me my writing was existential, so I thought I should coordinate, you know, with wardrobe.
Daria: Yeah, that's what Camus would have done. For your purposes, existential means "pseudo-intellectual poser with accessories from the street fair."
Camus was also mentioned in a Daria essay by Guy Wheatley. Good show.

Engineers celebrate this day for its value in teaching us about bridge building (as in, how not to). Love that video!

And you should know that this is an important date in a fanfic in which Jake Morgendorffer and Amy Barksdale conduct a torrid secret sexual affair that causes Daria to have brain damage. So, Amy likes his "fortitude," is that it? Yeah, right.

  • Anti-Trope, by Pinkminx (Part 6): “Self-esteem is important because..." Mr. O’Neill read the first question tentatively and glanced up at Dean. “It's a quality that will stand us in good stead the rest of our lives.” Dean replied in perfect monotone. (FF.net)
  • Apocalyptic Daria: Scarlett's Tale, by Doggieboy (Part 14): Within fifteen minutes of starting their walk, Scarlett and Roger lost sight of the church or anyplace remotely familiar. The teen stopped briefly, looked back, then turned around and walked on ahead. (SFMB)
  • Chances, by Coonassblondie (Parts 3 and 4): “So Jesse gave you his jacket, huh? Guess he’s pretty serious,” Trent said as he turned toward his sister as they sat at a traffic light, smiling softly at her. “To tell the truth, Trent, I don’t really know. I don’t know that much about him. Until tonight, I wasn’t aware he could form coherent sentences.” Trent only laughed in response, ending in his hacking cough. “Guess you learn something new every day, huh?”
  • Finn Morgendorffer 12: Carnivore, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 2): “You owe me big for waking me up at 9 AM.” Jane’s eyes were bleary and tired looking. “You get up earlier to go to school.” Daria reminded. “The keyword for that is school.” Jane returned. “And the keyword in your earlier speech is AM. It’s a sin to wake a Lane before lunch.”
  • In Silence Sarcastic, by Trscroggs (continued): Wednesday afternoon, three days after the Morgendorffer move was official, Quinn gingerly stepped out onto her back porch. While she would never admit it, Quinn was silently glad that the bulk of the house blocked light from the descending sun. Regardless, her prescription sunglasses were firmly in place as she looked out over the back yard. Standing in the middle of the yard Daria swung a bokken through a complicated weapon kata. Coming to a stop, Daria looked over at her sister.
  • Iron Chef: Daria is Raven's Apprentice, by Project Pegasus (continued): "You're going home to visit your demon family for the holidays, aren't you?" "Maybe." "Let me go too! It'll be fun!" "No! I'm going alone. It'll literally be Hell enough going down there by myself." [Thanksgiving comes....]
  • Regifted, by Ajar (Part 22): “Calm down, Stacy,” Quinn said. “We're almost to the bathroom. No one will even know that we're going to see that blemish.” “Blemish?” Stacy was confused. “What blemish?” “You know, the thing we're seeing in the bathroom.” “Ohh... that blemish.”

Stuff and More Stuff, with Pi

So I did a Google search for July 22, Daria, and Jane, and I got this blog. WTF? What is that? Must not be a guy thing.

Anyway, today is the 111th birthday of famed author Stephen Vincent Benét, whose stories both you and Daria undoubtedly read in middle and high school. ("The Devil and Daniel Webster"? "By the Waters of Babylon"?)

Most importantly, today is Pi Approximation Day (hooray!), just like it was last year at this time, but remember it is not Pi Day, which was in March. Also remember it is not appropriate to write pi as "pir." That is another kind of p-word.

Let's see what the Urban Dictionary says about Daria.... interesting. How about Quinn.... whoa! Ouch! OMG! Whew, sorry about that! Had no idea that... never mind. Moar l8r.

Daria and the Bard

While The Bug Guy looks up the fanfics which have been influenced by Shakespeare, this post will briefly name some of the episodes that owe one or more elements to the Bard. "Cafe Disaffecto," "Lucky Strike," "The Lost Girls," "Ill," and "Quinn the Brain" all mention or describe the works of Shakespeare. Brittany at left reenacts the role of Juliet in "Cafe Disaffecto."

I have been lax about updating the fanfiction list but will attend to it later this evening. Some great stuff is out. Back to The Bug Guy.

"I can't take anymore of this Shakespeare dude, bro. He's, like, a total chick writer!"

'Cause I haven't made BG's brain explode lately.

So, I've noticed that Daria is popularly thought to be very attractive--perhaps even more so than Quinn. Since all of the characters on Daria look fairly nondescript, being somewhat simply drawn cartoon characters, fans tend to point to the climactic scene from the episode "Quinn the Brain" to support this.

After all, Daria gives herself a makeover, and anyone who's seen a movie or TV show geared toward teenagers knows that's the way to turn a humdrum teen girl into a smoking hot one, right? ;)

There's also Quinn's reaction to Daria's makeover. She feels threatened, which clinches it, right? Quinn wouldn't feel threatened by Daria's appearance if Daria was not, in fact, at least as attractive as Quinn.

Right?

I'd like to offer a new way of looking at this scene. First, there's the obvious "parody" aspect of the scene. As mentioned previously, just about every young adult movie and/or TV show has done some variation on the "plain girl puts on makeup and fluffs her hair, then becomes supermodel" trope. "Quinn the Brain" has the plain girl put on makeup and fluff her hair--then turn around and revert back to her former appearance before more than one person even sees her.

Second, many people seem to overlook the parallelism of Daria's actions. All of the events leading up to that moment include Quinn "taking over" Daria's persona. She writes, she says "brainy" things, she dresses unfashionably, etc. Daria feels threatened by this, even though we all know she has no reason to be. No one would argue that Quinn's poem about the greasy fry is a masterpiece, or that her philosophizing about school work is the most ingenious idea since Darwin. The point is that Daria sees those things as defining her, and Quinn is now being recognized for them instead.

So, when Daria decides to fight back by taking over the aspects of Quinn's personality that define Quinn, there's no reason to assume that she successfully surpasses or even equals Quinn's appearance. Yes, Quinn felt threatened, but simply because she saw someone else usurping her persona--successfully or not--in the same way Daria felt threatened by Quinn. In short, Daria's makeover is the "greasy fry poem" of attractiveness.

This is not, of course, the only way to interpret that episode. Certainly it's possible that Daria walked out of her bedroom looking like the love child of Angelina Jolie and Jessica Alba. However, keep in mind that there exist plenty of women out there whose looks were between average and okay, who watched Daria in high school because they liked seeing another "average to okay" girl who reminded them that her appearance was irrelevant compared to her intelligence and sense of humor.

Am I saying there's no way Daria could possibly be attractive? Not at all. Am I saying that fandom should not ever consider Daria to be at supermodel heights of attractiveness? Nope. However, I think that, from now on, anyone who declares Daria to be the "hot" sister must also recognize Quinn as the "smart" sister.

It's only fair, after all! :-D

Brainy Quinn Loves Pi Day

Today is Pi Day, as all mathematically inclined people know. Everything you need to know about Daria and Pi Day was explained in an earlier post, so I won't repeat it here.

Latest entry in DariaWiki: Daria IRC Chatroom. JoĂ£o Paulo Costa, Disco316, Brother Grimace, Vlademir1, Quiverwing, BlackHole, and Ranger Thorne have added great stuff to this resource. You might also want to look over the page on Horror, which has finally been expanded.

More online praise of Daria, this time from Entertainment Weekly.com. Interesting article. Daria on Bachelorette? This sounds like an Iron Chef challenge.

Here is a really weird news item for you. Another Daria alumnus does good.... I think.

Need to work on Backgrounders this weekend and write another fanfic chapter. L8r.

[This blog entry will expand unpredictably within the next 24 hours. Stay tuned.]

[First part:] Echopapa is sending up a trial balloon on PPMB for an idea called "X-23." Respond to it, if you dare.

PPMB
  • Apocalyptic Daria: Brave New World, by Doggieboy (Part 6): Odell Jones sat in the driver’s seat of his minivan and hummed along with an Elvis Presley song as it played on the CD player. Sun’s out, good song from the King, a beautiful piece in the back, and all I need to totally make my day is one good “sale." (SFMB)
  • Complications, by Legendeld (Part 4): “I need to get laid. If something doesn’t happen soon, my wrist is going to end up in a sling.”
  • Daylight: Falling from Grace: I Should Have Been Home Yesterday, by Disco316 (Part 1): “West Virginia! We made it!” rang the cheery voice of Quinn Morgendorffer. Quinn’s voice betrayed none of the hardship she had to endure over the last month. “It’s about freaking time,” added Sandi Griffin.
  • Love Is a Series of Burning Sensations (ex-Accidents Will Happen), by Undefinedlust (Part 4): Sometimes unicorns have to die... wait, where have I heard that one before?
  • Other Side, by Legendeld (COMPLETE!): “They are the machine Hands. Those that worked in the world to ensure the Engines were obeyed.” Daniel answered Jane’s question concerning what the men were. “But they were all destroyed.”
  • Quinn Angel, by Lawndale Stalker/Lurker (continued): “You succeeded, Daria! My life is over! But I’m taking you with me! You hear me, Daria? You’re dead!”
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part II), by jtranser (continued): Daria reflected on how much her father had deteriorated since that day when Link, dressed in a squirrel suit and lederhosen, attacked her family. In a few seconds his tenuous grip on sanity finally slipped away.

"The greasy fry, it cannot lie..."

"Quinn the Brain" premiered on MTV ten years ago today. This episode made a lot of fans think maybe Quinn could be smart. This was a massive failure to recognize sarcasm. Doctors are working on it.

Be All You Can Be! Be a NERD!

It's Nerd Pride Day! Hooray! This is primarily a Spanish nerd holiday, but I have no problem with stealing it for celebration worldwide, so here it is. I don't think we need to wonder what Nerd Pride Day looks like at Holiday Island High.

Richard Lobinske, E. A. Smith, Nighthawk, Brother Grimace, Doggieboy, Dr. Mike, and legendeld have done great work expanding DariaWiki. Thanks! The most recent of 1,852 (or thereabouts, I keep getting different numbers) webpages there is Richard Lobinske's addition for "If I Could Tell You," a tale in Wildgoose's haunting Unseen Phenomenon series. Check it out.

On PPMB, Teenracer6 asks, "What would happen if Stacy Rowe was kicked out of the Fashion Club?" Discuss!

Also on PPMB, the Iron Chef for Unusual Superpowers has reached and passed the OMGWTF level.

Happy Pi Day!

Today, March 14th (a.k.a. 3/14) is Pi Day. On this day, we commemorate the brainiest Quinn in fanfic, the math wizard created by Kara Wild for the Driven Wild Universe. This is the Quinn who said, in "Breaking the Mold": "Pi is cute. If pi were on the Endangered Species list, I'd be, like, really upset."

How many Daria fanfics involve math, other than DWU? I will investigate.

Meanwhile, Hershey-chan continues a most excellent series of shipper pics with a real shocker. That totally rules. Love it.

More soon after I see what math-related fanfic there is (excluding stories where people say, "You do the math," which a lot of stories do).

LATE ADD: Hmmm, not coming up with much. John Lane and Daria argue over John's math grades in Richard Lobinske's "Echoes of a Relationship" (great story, that one), and Daria tutors Jane and Stacy in math in "The Law of Inclusion and Exclusion," by William Gasarch (also good story).

Back later. The Evil Quinn from Thomas's most excellent tale, "It's a Wonderful Life, Not," is also a genius, but she's, um, evil. She likes calculus, though. And murder, true, but anyone who likes calculus isn't all bad.

Back later.

Foxy Daria and Deep Quinn, On Deck!

Looking for some video action combat? We've got your video action combat from the amazing S.C., right here! A brand new image just went up from the computer game that everyone wants, and more images are coming! Hallelujah!

Hmmm, I had something else to say here but forgot what it was.

Back soon, after I remember it.

The OTHER Other Ankh Girl

Those wacky Daria animators were certainly fond of girl goths and girls with ankhs. In "Quinn the Brain" is this scene showing yet another girl with an ankh sitting in front of Stacy Rowe in Mr. O'Neill's class. Nothing else is known about this ankh girl, though a few seats in front of her is another goth girl, who for some reason is shown graduating with Daria and Jane in Is It College Yet?
