Is There a Doctor In the Fandom?

Dr. Phillips is pleased to announce that his diagnosis is National Doctor's Day, all day today! Of course, this day only applies to actual doctors, not quacks, so "Doctor" Shar can just stay out of it.

For those who aren't doctors and aren't in need of one, you could celebrate National Folding Laundry Day instead. And yes, Helen, the dryer definitely shrank Quinn's shirt. If it makes you feel better to think so.

I'm Sure That Cough is Asthma. Suuuuuure.

Trent is taking a rare moment of wakefulness to enjoy Weed Appreciation Day, and I will not be convinced that this character doesn't appreciate weed on the regular. Of course, the holiday is about appreciating garden weeds, but I won't tell him if you won't.

For those who aren't appreciating weed(s) today, it's also Respect Your Cat Day. Yes, Jake, that includes Mr. Whiskers, so please don't confuse him with a squirrel. I don't think you could handle another attack.

Fanfic Update!
  • Breaking Balmora, by welltemperedclavier (part 13): "Mr. and Mrs. Morgendorffer set up a little sleeping area for him in the office. He lay down on the blankets, rested his head on a pillow from the upstairs bedroom, and stared into the darkness."

  • Pregnant Prank, by wilddogjj (parts 1 and 2): "Quinn and Jim were in the bedroom dressing up for a night out. Jim was ready to go while Quinn was at the vanity making some final touches to her makeup." (Part 2)

  • Purple Sweater, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (COMPLETE!): "Everything just felt less and less real with every hour that passed." (Part 17)

Putting That High Pain Tolerance to the Test

Quinn isn't taking any chances on Good Hair Day, but I'm sure she'd never admit to ever having a bad hair day. It never happened and you can't prove anything!

If your hair is less than perfect, you could always celebrate Wear A Hat Day instead. Helen won't, though, as she's already on record as hating the way she looks in hats.

This is also the anniversary of the episode "Lucky Strike," which aired on this day in 2001. The big takeaway from this episode was Quinn finally admitting Daria was her sister (rather anticlimactically), but I think more attention needs to be paid to Daria's hypothetical fur bikini.

Let's Go Achieve a Drink!

Sorry, Jodie, but today is the International Day For Achievers, and you don't qualify. Check back when it's the International Day For Over-Achievers, okay?

Instead, why not kick back and enjoy National Cocktail Day instead? I'm sure Jake will, as long as the martini ingredients hold out.

Today is also the anniversary of "Cafe Disaffecto" and "The Lost Girls," which aired on this day in 1998 and 1999. Both episodes featured Daria's writing producing unexpected consequences: a riot in one, and a visit from Val in the other. You decide which was worse!

Fanfic Update!
  • Breaking Balmora, by welltemperedclavier (parts 10 - 12): "Jeval went over to Quinn’s house after the thing with Tiphannia. She’d just gotten home from the Portollos, and even though she’d done her best to look perfect, he could tell something was bothering her." (Part 11) (Part 12)

  • Daria Enrolls at Nevermore, by Meester_Lee (part 5.2): "'So what do we do now?' said Enid. 'Find out where the entrance is,' Daria replied. 'Get our stuff.'"

  • Purple Sweater, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 12 - 15): "It seemed that Daria and Jane were going to love the Woodslack experience after all!" (Part 13) (Part 14) (Part 15)

To QB Or Not to QB

Brittany's clearly been waiting for Talk Like William Shakespeare Day, and she's not going to let the opportunity pass her by. Never mind whether or not Kevin's going to get into the holiday; has anyone taken Brittany aside and explained to her what happens to Romeo and Juliet at the end of the play?

This is also As Young As You Feel Day, and please don't tell Val about it. If that woman "felt" any younger she'd be an embryo.

French Aliens from the Planet Earth!

Keep away from Tiffany because it's Extraterrestrial Abductions Day and the last thing you want is to be abducted by Tiffany. Not because of the alien thing but because she's just that annoying.

Oddly, it's also International Earth Day, so that's even more reason to not get abducted. Not that you needed more reasons, of course.

Assuming you do end up staying on Earth, today would be a good day to brush up on your foreign languages, as it's French Language Day! You could go to Chez Pierre to practice, or you could go just about anywhere else for a more authentic experience.

Fanfic Update!
  • Breaking Balmora, by welltemperedclavier (part 9): "His face hidden in steam, and hot water up to his neck, Jeval tried to relax."

  • Degrade, by FictionAuthorofFiction (COMPLETE!): "Daria felt herself freeze as her brain took in what she was hearing. Jane, her best friend, her only friend, was talking about her to the track kids."

  • Purple Sweater, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 9 - 11): "It seemed to Quinn that John Astrella grew taller and even more attractive now that they were getting closer, Daria and Jane stared at them from a great distance, Stacy's heart began to beat a lot faster than normal and meanwhile John and Anna continued with their chat." (Part 10) (Part 11)

Mixing Paper and Plastic is a Definite Fashion Don't!

The Fashion Club has gone all-in for Global Recycling Day, or at least Stacy has...and not by choice. Sandi, of course, wouldn't even recycle fashions, let alone touch garbage. I assume Tiffany has simply passed out from the shock of so much "ewwwwwwwwww."

Indeed, this whole situation is perfect for Awkward Moments Day, which will be quite a relief for Daria. Usually all of the awkward moments (peeing behind a tree, coming down with a rash, kissing her best friend's boyfriend, etc.) belong to her!

I Bet She's Pretending the Target Is Helen

Linda's got her eye on the prize for National Archer Day, but unfortunately the holiday is for people named Archer, not for people engaged in archery. I'll tell her after she puts down the bow and arrow.

I hope Helen knows that today is also Absolutely Incredible Kid Day, so that she can tell Daria over and over again that she's wonderful even though she just...doesn't...get it! What's wrong with her?!

Don't forget that it was also on this day in 1998 that the episode "That Was Then, This is Dumb" first aired. I will never not laugh at the flashback scene where Jake kicks the Pentagon.

Fanfic Update!
  • Breaking Balmora, by welltemperedclavier (parts 5 - 8): "It took a few days to get everything set up for restoring Tiphannia. Job schedules were way tougher to get around than the old school schedule. Satheri and Tiphannia didn’t work, but Satheri was so busy with wedding stuff that she had less spare time than anyone else. But they finally nailed a date for it." (Part 6) (Part 7) (Part 8)

  • Purple Sweater, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 6 - 8): "Lasagna for dinner was quite a Morgendorffer tradition, the entire family would enjoy it almost every night and so at the end of that day, which had seemed just as peaceful and ordinary as any other Friday, it was frozen lasagna once again that Quinn and Daria enjoyed together." (Part 7) (Part 8)

  • Take Jupiter From My Shoulders and Just Hold Her Awhile, by radiofox (part 1): "Stacy walked up to the front door of the Morgendoffer residence. As she walked up the door she felt the freezing air pierce her thin frame. She knocked on the door while thoughts swirled around in her head."

I Hope She Doesn't Flap Her Wings and Start a Hurricane

Daria is here to help teach everyone a lesson on Learn about Butterflies Day. The first lesson is, if you hold one tightly in your hand Jane Lane will punch you in the face for using that stupid metaphor.

If bugs aren't your thing, you could celebrate National Potato Chip Day instead. Not only are there both flat and ridgy, they're super plain so they won't fight the dip! Which is incredibly important to some people, apparently.

Finally, there's National Write Your Story Day, in which you can make up a story about anything you want. Maybe butterflies and potato chips? If you run into any trouble, just include a card game.

What About Working Grandmas?

Grandma Ruth is stunned to learn that it's National Ruth Day, and I think she should really make the most of today. Celebrate by buying yourself some nice girdles!

I think Ruth will be less pleased--but Helen will be thrilled--to learn that it's also National Working Mom's day. After all, in her day...well, no one really cares what they did in your day, Ruth. Go stuff a girdle in it.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Camp Fear," which aired on this day in 2001. There were no Ruths or working moms in that one, but there was a greased watermelon. So I guess it evens out?

Fanfic Update!
  • Breaking Balmora, by welltemperedclavier (parts 3 and 4): "Jeval always liked going to Silk-hawker’s Street. It was the most colorful part of Balmora, what with all the streamers in reds, blues, violets, and more going between the buildings and tumbling down the walls." (Part 4)

  • Daria Agere, by RadioFox (part 14): "Quinn walked into the giant pink-hued Payday store with her yellow purse clutched in her arm. She walked through the automatic metal doors and went to search for the aisle she was looking for."

  • It’s Just Rock And Roll. It’s Not That Serious, by translayton (part 2): "'Hairspray? Hairspray, PLEASE?' Beavis’s hand twitched while he anxiously waited for one of the two other people occupying the cramped bathroom to hand over the product."

  • Purple Sweater, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 4 and 5): "That day, the football field of the powerful Lawndale Lions looked very different from usual!" (Part 5)

Can He Play The Sound of Silence? Literally?

Joey's taking a very original approach to wooing Quinn on International Bagpipe Day, but unless he knows some Boys R Guys songs I don't think it's going to work. Still, maybe she'll agree to go on a date with him in exchange for not playing the bagpipes anymore.

Today is also Middle Name Pride Day, so here's a shout out to Jodie Abigail Landon, Michael Jorden Mackenzie, and Terry Barry Barlow. If any other Daria characters have canon middle names, I don't remember them, so remind me in the comments!

Last but not least, this is the anniversary of the episodes "The Invitation," "Depth Takes a Holiday," and "A Tree Grows in Lawndale," which all aired on this day in 1997, 1999, and 2000. That's quite the anniversary!

Not the Best Example of Female Empowerment, Are They?

Helen and Linda are wishing each other a lovely International Women's Day, or at least that's what you'd think they're doing. In reality they're engaging in a majorly passive-aggressive struggle for dominance hidden under a facade of sickly-sweet politeness. You know, the same thing they always do when they talk to each other.

As it's also National No Smoking Day, I want everyone to put out their cigarettes, refrain from taking up smoking, or stop holding seances in the girls' bathroom. Whatever you'd most prefer.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Better to See You With, My Dearies, by entrancedcat (COMPLETE!): "On her fifth attempt Daria succeeded in placing the contact lenses into her eyes without screaming loudly enough for the Tri-County area to take note."

  • Breaking Balmora, by welltemperedclavier (part 2): "'I love what you did with your hair!' Quinn clapped her hands together and leaned down for a better look at the lock of hair Jeval had let hang over his forehead. Jeval smiled back."

  • The Crass Menagerie, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Kevin, Jamie and Chuck were relaxing on the porch drinking beer while enjoying the fact that the snow and ice have melted and green buds are starting to appear on the trees." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 60): "Anna really hated oaks now, and yet she thought that hemlock trees were very beautiful indeed."

  • Hiking With Wolves, by radiofox (COMPLETE!): "'Remember, don't talk to anyone.' Doug Badwolf reminded his eldest daughter. 'Got it, Dad,' Cerise grumbled."

  • Purple Sweater, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 3): "The first thing that Quinn noticed was that Sandi Griffin looked especially irritated that day."

  • Song From An American Movie, by ladyevil (part 9): "At Pizza King, Daria was trying to get an audio interview with Tiffany Blum-Decker. 'I...used to...thiiiiiiink....' She drawled."

  • Star Trek: Lower Decks: An Aquatic Second Contact, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 3): "T’Lyn watched Mariner leave. 'She didn’t waste time.'"

She Knows That Other Frozen Foods Exist, Right?

Helen's trying to pretend that she's only serving the family frozen lasagna because it's National Frozen Food Day, but we all know that isn't true. It might be more convincing if she didn't serve the same thing every. Single. Night.

I think we can withhold the lasagna from Brian Danielson even if it is National Brian Day, because...well, screw that guy. He's a herpes-spreading jerk and he doesn't deserve lasagna. So there.

Just Don't Fight the Dip!

Kevin and Brittany are well-stocked for National Snack Day, especially because they have both flat and ridgy chips! Just don't mix them up. It could, I don't know, cause some kind of chain reaction that would kill us all? Brittany seemed to think so, anyway.

I suppose it's a good idea to err on the side of caution, what with it being National Safety Day. Kevin knows all about that, thanks to his brief stint as a grade school safety lecturer. Safety's cool!

Fanfic Update!
  • Breaking Balmora, by welltemperedclavier (part 1): "A single lock of blond hair fell down on Jeval’s brow, just a little left of center. He zeroed in on it, seeing his black eyes reflected back at him in his mom’s polished brass mirror."

  • Commitment, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Two of Quinn's triplet sons were seated in Ms. Duveau's 4th-grade class while the third, Timmy, stood in front of the class giving an oral report. On the chalkboard was the subject of these reports: the person I admire the most." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 59): "All that Daria Morgendorffer knew was that those could very well be the last moments of her life."

  • Purple Sweater, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 1 and 2): "Life flowed just as usual at the sleepy town of Lawndale, with its cold afternoons and the starry nights, a place where it really seemed that nothing out of the ordinary would ever alter the gray and peaceful lives of those that lived there." (Part 2)

It's Not Old, It's Vintage!

Upchuck, Daria, and Jane seem to be celebrating Old Stuff Day, but really Daria and Jane are trying to either unload their old stuff on Upchuck or just make him go away. The old stuff doesn't really get a lot of appreciation in this scene.

Just a reminder that today is also American Citizenship Day, and Mr. DeMartino really needs to make sure his paperwork is in order. You never know when Ms. Barch will get it into her head to make another anonymous tip.

Finally, it's been twenty-five years since "Quinn the Brain" first aired, and fandom still hasn't gotten over the "is Daria suddenly hot if she wears Quinn's clothes" debate. Ah, well. Anyone for popcorn?
