Monsters Like Privacy, Too

Jane's gotten into the spirit for National Frankenstein Day, and this does seem like exactly the kind of weird funky art project she'd be into. Uh...this is an art project, right, Jane? Right?

Today is also National Hermit Day, so in the wise words of Quinn Morgendorffer go ahead and "hide in your room like a kermit!" Of course, not all of us need an excuse to hole up somewhere and avoid the general public.

Here, Kitty Kitty?

I don't think Jake should be celebrating National Cat Day like this, because if there's one thing I know about cats it's that they like their personal space. They're like Daria, only more likely to scratch your face off if you piss them off.

In fact, I recommend celebrating National Hermit Day instead. These days, we're all kind of celebrating our inner hermit. And no, Quinn, I did not say "Kermit."

Fanfic Update!
  • Bearing the Summer, by Lady Evil (parts 10 and 11): "While Link ate his breakfast he texted with his friend, Brandon." (Part 11)

  • Life Goes On, by WildDogJJ (parts 4 - 6): "Quinn was on her way home from her visit with Stacy. As she pulled her car into the driveway of her and Jim's house she saw a yellow Hummer pull into the driveway next door." (Part 5) (Part 6)

  • To a Tea (IC: Make a Daria Character a Killer), by paisleygal (COMPLETE!): "Eric smiled as he pulled up to the Morgendorffer home. He should be ashamed of himself, but he wasn’t."

Jake's Feline Brave Today

Jake's in for a rough time for National Cat Day, because I don't think Mr. Whiskers is in the mood for his shenanigans. Really, is anyone ever in the mood for Jake's shenanigans?

In fact, for all we know, Mr. Whiskers is trying to celebrate Hermit Day and (like Daria) would far prefer to be left alone. Come to think of it, that's pretty much every cat, every day.

She's Aliiiiiive!

Jane's trying out yet another new look today because it's National Frankenstein Day. Instead of the Lady or the Tiger, I suppose today it's the Beauty or the Beast.

Today is also Hermit Day, so Quinn recommends that everyone "just hide in your room like a kermit!" Take that whichever way you like.

A Purr-fect Holiday

Jake is wishing Mr. Whiskers a very happy National Cat Day, but Mr. Whiskers would really rather just be left alone in his box. You know, like most cats. Then again, it might be because today is also Hermit Day, a holiday Daria can get behind 100%. A (refrigerator) box might do for now, but that cabin in Montana is calling her name.

Fanfic Update!

  • Credence, by Astrocar82 (part 5): "'Here is the plan,' Jane once Quinn and Stacy had turned back to her and away from Sandi. Jane then reached into her pack and pulled out a jar full of moving things."

  • The Depths of Cedars, by ognawk (part 1): "As he walked past a door, a cat walked out of the room. Tom crouched to stroke the cat and suddenly heard a voice in his head. Just leave! Tom looked at the cat with confusion. Funny, that cat just told me to leave, he thought."

  • Dylan, by J-D (part 32a): "'Dad? Mom? I've been thinking. I can't be an athlete forever.' Dylan pricked up his ears. Kris was telling their parents what they'd want to hear, so if that was the bait, where was the hook?"

  • An F-ing Butterfly House (Getting to Casa Lane), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'Ok so remind me again why we're here.' Dean muttered to his brother as the four of them separated from the school kids they had tagged along with to get in."

  • A New Direction, by peetz5050 (part 16): "'C'mon, let's watch a crappy movie and cheer ourselves up.' Jane managed a weak smile. 'I really would like to see one of yours, how about it?'"

  • Phoebe's Keep (It is October, after all), by peetz5050 (COMPLETE!): "He was interrupted by the door of the alehouse being opened abruptly and a number of men came in. A voice said. 'That's them.' And that's where the fight started."

  • ST: Dyson Sphere 01: Sphere (Non Daria), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "'Captain, sensors have picked up a large gravimetric reading half a light year to our starboard,' she said. 'Intriguing; alter course to investigate,' the Captain said."

  • Unnamed story (The All New All-Purpose Creative Writing Thread), by PrecambrianStudios (part 1): "Karis squinted as she tried to decipher the LED letters as they slowly scrolled across above the bus driver's head. But it was a useless effort; her milky-white eyes continued to dart all over the place."

  • Unnamed story (IC: Helen of Hearts), by ashk09 (part 1): "Helen was halfway to the office, no doubt to another day spent sitting in front of a computer, or a desk-load of reports which would need to be leafed through and signed before close of business or they might lose a wealthy client, when the pain in her back returned; a sharp, knifing right in the middle of her spine."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: Do What Now?), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'Now Daria,' Helen said to her eldest child as they drove down the streets of their new hometown of Lawndale, 'I know that moving to a new place and a new school is a big adjustment...'"

Teh Intterwebz Am Borned!!!11!!!1!

Yes, today the Internet celebrates its 40th birthday. The first computer message ever sent over a host-to-host connection was sent out this day over ARPANET, forty years ago at 10:30 PM. And now we have penguin porn 24/7. Just when you think things can't get any better..... (Thanks to UU for the image!)

For reasons unknown, today has been declared to be Hermit Day, which would suit Daria just fine. Stay home today and play on the Internet to celebrate.

Continuing yesterday's Halloween reading recommendations, try the fanfic collection at Sh33p's Fluff, which overlaps the collection at Outpost Daria a bit. Nice artwork!

Better yet, let's look at some Halloween fan art from the broader community. The following were collected from Outpost Daria.
  • Caitlin Duffy (Daria as a ghost on Halloween)
  • HelpfulSkittlesExplosion (Linda takes Sandi, Stacy, and Tiffany out for Halloween)
  • Angelinhel (Young Quinn dresses as a fairy on Halloween)
  • Liliane Grenier (The Holidays)
  • Geoffrey Roberts (Daria and Jane trade places for Halloween)
  • Katie Cook (Three student filmmakers set out into the woods to research the legend of the Lawndale Witch. They never returned. A year later, their footage was found...)
And a creepy bedtime story. Now for the fanfics.

  • Daria: Hunter (Suited for Crime), by Roland "Jim" Lowery (continued): "Okay, look, Upchuck," Jane said quickly, getting the man's attention before he truly got started. "We're here on business. We're looking for—" "Brittany and Kevin, the latest Bonnie and Clyde pairing to hit these mean streets," he said, not missing a beat. "Yes, I know." "And just how do you know that?" Daria asked.
  • Sandi Griffin's "Dracula," by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Tell me that my brother is still snoozin'." "Yeah, but the transformation is still taking place. All it's going to take is one more bite and Trent is going to become a vampire douchebag for life."
  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fanfic Should Have: Hump Day), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Girls," Jake said, "I just want you to know your mother and I realize this isn't easy for you - especially for your, Daria, right?" "Lle tela?" asked Daria. (Daria/Lord of the Rings)
  • Unnamed story (Three-peat! New Ideas Thread Wins Again!), by Szcz (COMPLETE!): "I destroy you now, Lane." "Try."

To Heck with Everyone!

For reasons unknown, today has been declared to be Hermit Day, which would suit Daria just fine. Her glowering image at right is from "Citizen Butt-head."

Two years ago, today was Wonder Woman Day in Oregon, but apparently that's not happening anymore.

John Glenn went back into space 10 years ago today. Talk about "retirement by rocket." I saw him take off for space BOTH times!

The DC Daria thread on PPMB has great artwork showing Daria cast as superheroes and supervillains.

I am totally disappointed that no one is going to read some Daria-related slash on FF.net (top two stories). What's the matter with you people? Why don't you support Our Heroine's best friends? It could change your life. You have only yourselves to blame for missing out.

How are you spending your Hermit Day?

PPMB
  • Blood, Sweat, and Cheers, by Kristen Bealer (part 12): Did you ever see this huge accident just before it happened, and there was nothing you could do to stop it but you couldn't look away from it anyway? That was cool, wasn't it? Hang on for this one.
  • Daylight: Ashes and Kisses, by Legendeld (COMPLETE!): Whoa, I think the only time that particular pairing came up was in one of the scenes-that-should-not-be threads! Whoa! Anyway, forget that and read the story.
  • Daylight: When the Ball Dropped, by Disco316 (Part 10): “I don’t remember passing by the school.” “Do you remember the crater three blocks back?”
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part II), by jtranser (continued): Looks like Daria's in some kind of fraternity ritual. Thank God for cobras.
