Say Cheese!

Everybody grab their cameras (or cell phones, I suppose) and start clicking because today is Camera Day! Jane's already gotten started, but I'm sure you can find all kinds of embarrassing moments to capture for eternity. Have fun!

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Gifted," which aired on this day in 1998. Although Daria and Jodie decided to stay at Lawndale High, they had a good time learning that smart kids can be just as irritating as dumb ones.

Fanfic Update!
  • Am I A Grownup Yet?, by jones2000 (part 17): "'Thomas Andrew Sloane! What the hell are you doing here?' Kirk demanded, his face tight and drawn. He was wearing a long grey overcoat and black gloves and was one top hat away from looking like the villain from a silent movie."

  • The Artist and The Fashionista, by Jabe Shepherd (part 4): "Later that weekend, Quinn is approaching the Lane's house. She knocks on the door; it took a while, but Trent answered the door. 'Oh, Daria's sister?' Trent asked surprised."

  • Quinn's last steps, by Rémi (part 4): "Brittany's house. Daria and Quinn are coming in, Daria pushing Quinn's wheelchair. Teens are partying around. Quinn : That was nice of Jodie to get us invited to this party. Daria : Yes, I'm so glad to be bored here rather than doing my own thing in my room."

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries #2), by Roentgen (part 188): "'Anyway,' Sandi said, 'I had an ulterior motive for our little get together.' 'What?' Quinn cried. 'You're running again?' Jane chuckled. 'You took all of us to New York to tell us that?'"

  • Unnamed story (World's Shortest Crossover XV: A New Era In Crossovers), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Jane: Are you sure this is safe? Trent: Jane, it's as safe as it's going to get."

The Future's So Bright, They Gotta Throw Shade

Jane and Trent are perfectly happy to celebrate National Sunglasses Day, especially if it means they can alienate the "normal" members of their extended family. Daria's going to stick with her regular glasses, which do more than enough alienating as they are.

Mack Caught a Fish Thiiiiis Big!

Mack's gotten a head start on National Catfish Day, although I don't think that's a catfish. Anybody know? I'm not good with fish.

In other news, today is the anniversary of the episode "Boxing Daria," which aired on this day in 2001. There weren't any catfish there, either, but we did get a ton of insight into what makes Daria tick and a very fitting end to the series (aside from the final movie).

Fanfic Update!
  • Am I A Grownup Yet?, by jones2000 (part 16): "'What are all those cars for, d'you suppose?' 'I'd say reporters.' ' Already?' 'It doesn't take long.' Daria said. 'Death and destruction are our bread and butter.'"

  • Getting By, by EntrancedCat (parts 6 and 7): "'So Miss Deshima,' Mr. DeMartino paused in front of Tiffany's desk. 'PERhaps you would CARE to give us the reasoning of the Imperial Army in their inVASION of Manchuria?'" (Part 7)

  • Quinn Got In The Car, by Lady Evil (part 10): "O'Niel pouted as all the campers cheered for "Uncle Anthony". Meanwhile, Daria and Link were on the other side of the bus saying their own good-bye."

  • Rowe And Moreno: Taking The "C-Bus", by DIsaac (part 1): "After coming home and crashing out on the couch. They start talking about their future In Radio. STACY: So tired. Don't. Want. To. Move. DANI: I seconded it."

Tickled Pink

Daria is deeply regretting that no one explained to her that National Pink Day is not mandatory. I'm sure she'll change into something far less cheerful as soon as possible.

Today is also Public Service Day, so get out there and display some Awareness of Others! Read to old people, collect clothes for the needy, or just yell at the TV about book burnings. Totally your call!

Downward-Facing Divas

Anyone want to join the Fashion Club in some exercise for International Day of Yoga? Yeah, I didn't think so. Any peaceful meditation would be halted immediately by a snide remark (Sandi), mindless prattle (Quinn), a panic attack (Stacy) or...well, actually Tiffany might be the only one to just stay quiet, if only because she can't think of anything to say.

If yoga isn't your thing, there's also Take a Road Trip Day. Pack up the Tank and head off to Alternapalooza...or some unhelpful corn, if the van is feeling unreliable. On the bright side, you might get a bee sting out of the deal. Who could turn that down?

Fanfic Update!
  • Better Than Nothing (IC: Memed Spiral), by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "He'd wanted to be a poet, once. He'd wanted to use his voice and guitar like a hammer and chisel to break through the lies, to reach the cruel but beautiful truth at the heart of the world."

  • Daria the Vampire Slayer: Hell Comes To Texas, by Charles RB (part 11): "'If you feel invisible at high school... maybe you ARE! Look-through loners, next, on SICK SAD WORLD!'"

  • Daria vs. Terfs, by Peridaniel (part 2): "At lunch, the Fashion Club gathered around as they usually did reading their magazines and commenting on what was inside of them."

  • Getting By, by EntrancedCat (parts 4 and 5): "Just as Daria reached for the handle of Chez Lane's front door, the door was yanked open by her father, Jake Morgendorffer. Her dad almost collided with Daria and Jane as he stepped on the front step while talking to someone still inside." (Part 5)

  • Quinn Got In The Car, by Lady Evil (parts 8 and 9): "I wonder if I should wear shorts instead of a skirt. Daria pondered as she considered her scant wardrobe. Or maybe jeans like I did for Alternapalooza. It's getting too hot for the jacket. What kind of shirt should I wear? Ugh, I'm starting to sound like Quinn!" (Part 9)

  • Quinn's last steps, by Rémi (parts 2 and 3): "The house of the Barksdale family is a cosy home in a well-off neighborhood. Several fencing trophies, and a sword on the wall, can be seen in the living room. Daria and Quinn are coming in, Daria pushing Quinn's wheelchair." (Part 3)

  • Scenes, by JPAGC (part 2.5): "The call was made just as her third period, economics, was starting. 'Will Daria Morgendorffer come to the nurse's office.'"

Shaken, Not Kissed

Jake's got a pitcher all ready for National Martini Day! What? Oh, no, that's not for sharing. That's all Jake's, so you'd better go make your own.

Today is also National Kissing Day, but I think Daria should sit this one out. Kissing doesn't seem to end well for her, whether it's almost ruining a friendship or throwing her mother into hysterics.

I Think He Misunderstood What "Vegging Out" Means

Kevin's got plenty of vegetables (and some bonus fruit) for Eat Your Vegetables Day, but I think he's planning to throw them at the movie screen rather than eat them himself. Still, you never know what those crazy kids will do next! Why, they might start brushing their teeth twice a day and getting eight hours of sleep each night!

Fanfic Update!
  • Am I A Grownup Yet?, by jones2000 (part 15): "It was dusk by the time the taxi dropped them off at the station. Everyone at the radio station tiptoed around Trent like he could have snapped at any moment."

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (parts 4a and 4b): "Once school day was over Daniel and Quinn returned home. Since their parents would not be back for a couple of hours, Daniel took the opportunity to talk to his sister." (Part 4b)

  • Daria's Great Adventure, by dmsfanman (part 26): "Shamus and Ian set up the folding table in the habitat and covered it with a sheet as a tablecloth. Tom and Daria were doing the cooking and Julie was setting up the chairs."

  • The Guilded Age, by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "Someone had tied a big slate to the sinuous beige stem of the academy's emperor parasol." (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5) (Part 6)
  • Quinn's last steps, by Rémi (part 1): "Helen is driving her daughters to school. Daria is riding shotgun, Quinn is in the back seat. Helen : Girls, I realize it's not easy moving to a whole new town. Daria : Did we move ?"

  • Skin Deep, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "Later, at Jane's house, Daria let everything out. Her fears that her superpowers might attract the wrong kind of attention and lead to her being locked up in a government laboratory, her frustration at becoming ever weirder by the day, and her suspicion that the aliens would one day return and take her away. ('Not that I'd complain, exactly, but I wouldn't mind a few minutes' notice so I can pack a few books for the ride.')"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Advanced Technology), by Szcz (part 1): "Helen Morgendorffer´s office was in fact a plastic cube, transparent but isolated form the outer sound in the middle of her super-organic urban farm. Some palms were a pleasant decorative background."

  • Unnamed story (Walter's assorted stuff), by Walter Kovacs (part 1): "'"Lastly, to illustrate my point I offer these', stated the highest-ranking scientist and head of the board of Climate projections as he pressed a button that led to two holographic projections appearing on the table where the people watching the presentation were sitting."

  • you are the bearer of unconditional things, by nerdyscully (COMPLETE!): "Daria's back hurt, even though it had been three days since she moved out of her dorm. Still, she hadn't realized how much she had brought to Raft and how many boxes she had to haul to her car."

Lightning and Wind Go Well Together!

Mr. DeMartino has switched from History to Science to re-create Benjamin Franklin's famous kite experiment on this day in 1752. Given the man's already-shaky health, this seems like a terrible idea, but it's still probably better than putting up with Kevin.

Today is also Global Wind Day, but I think the globe will take a pass on spending any time with Wind Lane if it can help it. Fortunately, the holiday refers to wind energy rather than the over-sensitive, thin-skinned brother of Jane and Trent.

Finally, it was on this day that something important happened in Angelinhel's story "61501." I'm not going to spoil it; you'll have to read it for yourself to find out.

Maybe Frozen Lasagna Isn't Such a Bad Thing....

You know, I usually give Jake a bunch of crap for National Kitchen Klutzes of America Day, but this time I think I'll pick on Helen. I mean, at least Jake tries, so I figure he should get some credit. Helen, on the other hand, only tries to cook if she feels guilted into it--making bread for Willow and Coyote, taking lessons from Grandma Ruth, and so forth. And can I just point out that she couldn't tell the difference between chicken and fish?

So, take a well-earned day off, Jake. Just don't let Helen in the kitchen, either, okay?

Fanfic Update!
  • Am I A Grownup Yet?, by jones2000 (part 13): "From the bottom of Dave's archive box, Daria found an unmarked yellow floppy disk and slipped it into her bag, unable to take anything else. When they got back to Lawndale it was so late that Jake drove her directly to the station."

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 3): "Once the conversation with Mr. DeMartino was over, Daniel walked quickly towards the class where the next lesson would be held. He noted with curiosity that the hallways were almost deserted and that calm reigned supreme."

  • Edicius, by elainefr (part 14): "Daria stood looking in the full-length mirror. It wasn't something that she normally did, but she had been making some small changes in her life."

  • Quinn Got In The Car, by Lady Evil (part 7): "'You really don't have to walk me home, Trent.' said Daria as the two of them walked down the road at twilight. 'It's almost dark and it's summer.' Trent pointed out. 'This is when the crazies come out.'"

  • Skin Deep, by Kristen Bealer (parts 8 and 9): "Daria managed to get the details from Quinn at dinner that night. Z-93, a local radio station, had sent Bing and the Spatula Man to Lawndale High. Daria had not yet determined whether they were there in exchange for a kickback to Ms. Li or as punishment to the students for some as-yet-unrevealed crime." (Part 9)

Aloha Eep!

Stacy's hula-ing her little heart out for Kamehameha Day, a Hawaiian holiday that commemorates Kamehameha the Great. I don't know if that skirt and headpiece is a fashion don't or not, but she seems pretty serene so I'm not going to mess with it.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Prize Fighters," which aired on this day in 2001. Does anyone else really want to read the full version of Daria's scholarship essay, the "lighthearted spoof" that calls for the elimination of all money?

Whoa, There!

On this day in 1973, Secretariat became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years after winning the Belmont Stakes. I see Helen and Jake are trying to recreate the moment...or at least I hope that's what they're doing.

Also on this day, the episode "Pinch Sitter" aired in 1997. Can you say "indemnification"? I knew you could.

Fanfic Update!

  • Skin Deep, by Kristen Bealer (parts 6 and 7): "A few mornings later, Daria went downstairs looking for breakfast and heard odd noises as she came into the kitchen. She wasn't sure which was stranger: that Quinn was singing, or that her song seemed to be about science." (Part 7)

  • Teaching is a work of heart, by Rémi (parts 13 and 14): "Lawndale High. Daria is talking with Ms. Li in her office. Ms. Li : Ms. Morgendorffer, raising funds for the coffeehouse is a crucial role for the good work of our project. That's why I hope your daughter will set an example for our other students." And You Thought BRITTANY Was the Airhead!

Brittany and Kevin are taking flight for Hot Air Balloon Day, and I'm sure there are at least a few people who hope that they'll stay up there. Jake might take the opportunity to conquer his fear of heights, especially if those clouds that look like his old man are still hanging around.

Fanfic Update!
  • Am I A Grownup Yet?, by jones2000 (part 9): "'How are you?' My career is in freefall, my family is nuts, I almost had a coronary last night, and I'm starting to realise that maybe Jane knows more about me than I'm entirely comfortable with... 'Good.'"

  • Pack Mentality, by Princess_Pasta (part 2): "Like Gregor Samsa, Daria found herself undergoing a transformation. Thankfully, for her sake, she didn't find a monstrous insect staring back at her in the mirror but her reflection was strangely clear and crisp."

  • Quinn Got In The Car, by Lady Evil (part 6): "Helen mixed up a rum and Coke for herself at the dinner table, sipped it and sighed. Had she really been a bad mother? If so, could she undo what she had done? It was nearly eighteen years straight of maternal fuck ups. How could she repent?"

  • A.R.C Chapter 10 Imprisoned, by ST91 (COMPLETE!): "Thinking about it, Daria realized that insulting her sister and her mother hadn't been a good idea. Her outburst had given Helen an excuse for ground her."

And If You Spill It, Don't Cry!

It's World Milk Day, so Jake is chugging for everything he's worth. One might argue that that isn't much, but I'm not going to. Why stress the poor guy out right after he's finished some nice, calming milk?

On this day in 1997, Daria was featured in the Washington Post. If you've never read it, check it out for some interesting trivia and early speculation on Daria's future from Glenn Eichler.

Fanfic Update!
  • Beach Daze, by WildDogJJ (part 1): "Daria and Jane are at their usual table celebrating the end of the school year. Jane: 'Ah, summer! Just think, no more pencils, no more books, no more DeMartino's psychotic looks!'"

  • Changing Janes (Iron Chef: Send in the Clones), by YouthofOz (COMPLETE!): "Jane sighed and put down the paintbrush. She went to the front door and answered it. 'Oh, it's you,' she said, not bothering to feign enthusiasm."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (part 67): "Ellen Bowden had now settled into her new job and had largely settled into her new digs: a 'mother-in-law' house behind an older witch's house southwest of Abilene. Her probationary period had ended and she began to feel that she was at last a professional doing social work for MACUSA."

  • Daria's Great Adventure, by dmsfanman (part 25): "A door came down over the entrance to the room. It was immediately accompanied by a 'whooshing' sound that everyone could hear."

  • Teaching is a work of heart, by Rémi (part 11): "Morgendorffer household, living room. Quinn is excitedly telling her afternoon to Daria. Quinn : After that, Jane didn't want me to leave anymore. Then we had this long, meaningful talk about art and feelings and stuff... It was great : I never had a talk like this with the Fashion Club. I mean... Of course, we're always discussing things in the Fashion Club : clothes and make-up and that kind of things, but it isn't the same..."

  • Todd's Life Lottery (Odds and Ends), by LSM (part 1): "You have a few advantages before you are born. You are born the United States in 1976. Your parents are white, Italian Americans to be precise, in a time when that wouldn't get you killed for anarchism or being suspected Mafia members."
