Doesn't He Have a Heart Condition?

Mr. DeMartino is immediately regretting his decision to re-create Benjamin Franklin's kite experiment, which happened on this day in 1752. If he's having second thoughts now, just wait until science teacher Ms. Barch finds out he's encroaching on her territory.

Speaking of dangerous weather phenomena, today is also Global Wind Day, although maybe the holiday refers to Jane and Trent's older brother. I'd rather have the one that could hypothetically blow Lawndale away.

Early to BED and Early to RISE....

Either Mr. DeMartino is taking a more visually-oriented approach to teaching history or he's found an interesting way to celebrate the anniversary of Benjamin Franklin's birth on this day in 1706. I hope the lightning doesn't have a negative impact on either his eye or his heart condition.

If you haven't done so already, better give up on those New Years resolutions because today is Ditch New Years Resolutions Day. Unless your resolution was to not make any resolutions, in which case you're all set!

Fanfic Update!
  • Bearing the Summer, by Lady Evil (part 26): "Jane sat on the porch steps of the clinic. Any other day, she’d be mildly curious about the small mob of clamoring girls, one giggling like a hyena on nitrous oxide. Right now, she was too worried to care."

  • Burned Out, by Wrabbit7 (part 24): "The girls all lined up in the gym, dressed in identical blue shirts and yellow shorts, though with the way some of them filled them out, one could be excused for thinking there was some 'customizing' going on with them."

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 59): "'Oh! Hell Mr. Landon, Mrs. Landon. I'm sorry I didn't notice you.' Daniel said, taken by surprise."

  • Daria in the Background (IC : Daria doesn't need glasses), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "Art Class was interesting. Daria knew she didn’t have any real talent in the subject. She knew that her strengths lay elsewhere. However, even she could do basic things like perspective."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria has a huge crush on Brittany.), by Sureia (part 1): "'Miss Defoe, I need a new pencil, I used up the eraser...'"

Maybe Just Try on a Nice Pair of Bifocals Instead?

Mr. DeMartino is holding an ill-advised reenactment in honor of Benjamin Franklin's birth on this day in 1706. I'm not sure why; science experiments are more Ms. Barch's thing than his. Maybe he's trying to work out a cheap method of self-resuscitation in case of heart attack.

Lightning and Wind Go Well Together!

Mr. DeMartino has switched from History to Science to re-create Benjamin Franklin's famous kite experiment on this day in 1752. Given the man's already-shaky health, this seems like a terrible idea, but it's still probably better than putting up with Kevin.

Today is also Global Wind Day, but I think the globe will take a pass on spending any time with Wind Lane if it can help it. Fortunately, the holiday refers to wind energy rather than the over-sensitive, thin-skinned brother of Jane and Trent.

Finally, it was on this day that something important happened in Angelinhel's story "61501." I'm not going to spoil it; you'll have to read it for yourself to find out.

A Penny SAVED is a Penny--ARGGHHH!!!

Mr. DeMartino (or perhaps a distant ancestor) is trying his hand at science experiments instead of history lectures in honor of Benjamin Franklin's birth on this day in 1706. Either that, or he's trying to find a cheap source of electricity to save on his utilities bill. That man seriously needs a damn raise.

The deadline to nominate for the 2017 Daria Fanworks Awards is tomorrow! Choose your favorite Written and Visual works before it's too late!

Fanfic Update!
  • Creak, by Jim North (part 9): "After making sure all the lights were off and nothing was exploding or leaking gas, she grabbed her jacket, locked up the house, and settled into the musty interior of her car once again. She made the loop around the drive, giving the house one last visual inspection before pulling down to the street and getting underway."

  • God Save The Esteem: Punk is Dead, by Charles RB (part 8): "'We have gathered here not to mourn Jake Morgendorffer but to celebrate the life of—' 'No we're not, we're at a funeral!'"

  • Iron Chef: Truth or Dare, by Roentgen (part 2): "Quinn was terrified of the possibility of what could happen next. Which was worse, the Truth or the Dare? She kept thinking about it. 'The longer you wait,' Daria said with a smile, 'the worse it gets.'"

  • Priorities (Quinn, Season 2), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn is asleep in her bed while the curtains are drawn shut. Her alarm clock goes off. She opens one eye, then the other before reaching over and hitting the 'off' button. She slowly sits up and yawns." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Quinn's Skin (Quinn, Season 3), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn and Jim are having breakfast. Quinn is eating Model Crunch while Jim is having eggs and bacon. Quinn: How can you eat that junk and not gain wieght?" (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Standstill, by Princess_Pasta (part 19): "December barrels ahead in a blurry haze and January sits in waiting, fresh and new with the promise of revival. Daria still feels trapped by the cold embrace of winter."

  • Tales of Lawndale - Festivus Frustrations, by Eduard Tubin (part 1): "Daria had noticed Amisha spending more time in his demon form when at home. He flew down the stairs and into the kitchen past her father, landed ext to the coffee and Jake didn't notice."

  • A Three Hour Tour, by Jim North (part 3): "While his first mate was getting settled in with the passengers, Tony was busying himself with making sure everything was in tip-top shape before they headed out."

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries : Thread #2), by Roentgen and Brother Grimace (parts 92 and 93): "'So when do I get to make my "debut"?' Karen asked. It was hard to get Jodie's attention. Karen looked down at what appeared to be a carburetor lying at her feet, along with several socket wrenches, with a paper of mathematical drawings pinned by one of the wrenches. 'Hey, Jodie?'" But What Will the Electricity Do to His Eye?

Mr. DeMartino is apparently trying out a new career path in scientific experimentation in honor of Benjamin Franklin, who was born on this day in 1706. I'm not sure he's getting any better job satisfaction than he did as a teacher. Then again, it probably isn't a whole lot worse, either.

That Electricity Can't Be Doing His Eye Any Favors

Mr. DeMartino is trying his hand at science as Benjamin Franklin, who was born on this day in 1706. Unfortunately, I don't think the experiment is working out the way he'd hoped.

...And yet, I'm sure it's still less aggravating than trying to teach Kevin.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Adventures In The Morgendorffer-Sloane Residency, by muskweasel (part 2): "I interviewed Miriam Elena Sloane-Morgendorffer exactly a month after I saw Ophelia, on a Saturday after she had finished her first week of seventh grade. She had trouble deciding which story she wanted to tell me, but she finally chose the first day back at school after summer break."

  • Ah, Hell, by metameric1 (part 6): "He stepped around her, into his room. He leaned against the doorframe, not quite looking at her. 'I can't walk you to your car,' he said quietly. 'I can't watch you leave again, not like this.'"

  • Behind the Counter, by NightGoblyn (part 4): "Daria looked up from the desk and saw a tall, solidly built young man looking down at her. His green hair and facial piercings looked familiar for some reason. She frowned, and then something Jane had said clicked."

  • Hemming's Way, by ognawk (parts 3 and 4): "As she looked off to the doors where he usually came out, she didn't notice another girl approach from behind her, grabbing her glasses and taking them off her." (Part 4)

  • In These Plagued Streets, by ognawk (part 3): "'What's eating at your soul, Daria? You can tell l'il old Janey.' Daria looked at Jane and then looked at the floor again, not making a sound."

  • Match Breaker, by SacredDust (parts 5 and 6): "Trent frowned contemplatively. It's okay to cry... I can't see the sky... Why won't I die?... Who ate all the pie? Nah, that doesn't quite fit." (Part 6)

  • Mysteries of Lawndale 1: Esteem of the Investigator, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 3): "Daria entered the office. 'Can I help you?' the receptionist asked. 'I would like to know what the procedure is for forming a school sponsored club.'"

  • A New Kid's Dance Party While a Tree Grows (IC: Mix them up. DariaXDaria Crossover!), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "'Did you hear, Brittany? Kevin was taken to the hospital after running into the Tommy Sherman Memorial Tree,' Angie Zammit said, as she came up to her fellow cheerleaders."

  • The Red Skirts, by NapalmKracken (part 1): "Daria tried to pay them no heed. She just buried her face further into her book, or at least what passed for one these days. Physically it was a baby blue rectangular reader with a small library in it. She was a passenger aboard the transport ship SS Kinsha, an old long-range luxury yacht whose glory days were far behind her."

  • Tom Sloane, Lax Bro, by Shiva (part 20): "Elsie glanced behind her to see her two sisters-at-arms, Elaine Dickinson and Gretchen von Ramsla, already bitching away."

Or Maybe DeMartino Should Just Pay His Electric Bill Already!

Today is the 306th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Franklin, who was (among other things) a diplomat, inventor, politician, and--as DeMartino is figuring out--discoverer of various theories about electricity.

Today is also the anniversary of the Beavis and Butt-head episode "Sprout," which aired in 1996. In it, Daria tries to give the boys some advice about gardening. As you may expect, it doesn't work out very well for them.

Fanfic Update!
  • Armored Cynic Daria, Episode 1: Esteem Rising, by RX-87 (part 1): "QUINN: I can't believe we're moving to the L4 cluster! Ugh. It's so... So dull. Everyone knows L5 is where it's at! The clubs, the parties, the designers! Everybody who's anybody is there! DARIA: Hopefully that includes the High Front. It's just not a party without explosions."

  • At the Crossroads..., by oni (part 3b): "As soon as the front door opened, Sandi and Stacy bolted up from their spots on the couch. Fear crept into Sandi as soon as she saw Quinn. 'We’re hom-,' Quinn immediately stopped what she was going to say the instant she saw Stacy in the living room. 'Stacy,' she said with excitement, and then had a complete change in mood as soon as she saw Sandi behind Stacy. 'Sandi,' she questioned in a nervous voice."

  • The Author as a Lesbian, Season 4, by DeacBlue (COMPLETE!): "Sandi wasn't really aware of anything until she had been in several cars, and people sat around her doing paperwork. Occasionally they would ask her questions about her mother or...no, that wasn't him. Daddy's alive. It couldn't have been him up there. He had to be there to take care of me, especially when mother was being a bitch. So that wasn't him. It was just someone else who had climbed into the window and laid down on the bed and... She didn't realize that she was sobbing again until someone gently grabbed her arms and looked into her eyes." (Part 12) (Part 13) (Is It Fall Yet?)

  • Be Careful What You Wish For, by Doggieboy (part 6): "Before she could even raise her right hand to knock on the door, it opened and John Hobbs blocked the doorway. The young woman stopped, startled, and instantly knew that something was wrong. 'What?' she asked. 'What’s wrong, John?' He crossed his arms over his chest - slowly. 'If you want someone else,' he said, 'I’ll let you go and you can be with him instead. But do not play me for a fool.' Oh, Goddess, no! Not this! Please!" (SFMB)

  • A Bookstore Discussion (IC: Why was Trent was banned from the Bookstore?), by Doggieboy (COMPLETE!): "Daria looked at Jane as they walked home from school one day and asked, 'Why can't Trent go into the bookstore ever again, Jane?'"

  • A Distant Lawndale, by Arena del Sur (part 3): "It's Dad... alive! Mom was there, and Quinn. Even the presence of Grandma Ruth moved me. I burst into tears. –Wow, she is very upset. –Quinn! –said Mom–. Daria, what's wrong? I didn't tried to talk, tears kept rolling down my chin and I could not stop, as I didn't in Dad's funeral."

  • Ghost Girl Chapter 5, by Pumpkin Panic (part 2): "Daria smiled because Quinn in her own way had actually helped her feel a little bit better. 'Lets get to school and return to our normal hostilities as not to draw suspicion.' 'Yeah. I kinda really want to show whoever this guy is that he can't treat me like his object, and while I'm a pretty face I can also smash in his!' Quinn asserted with a raised fist."

  • God Save The Esteem ep39: Epic F Word, by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "Daria looked away. 'You might be in a different school to me. And neither of us is popular at any school in the county for what we’ve done.' The unspoken threat hung in the air. 'So I have some damage control to do,' said Daria."

  • Green Dragon Rising, by Grifter74: "Daria adjusted the butterfly clip holding her hair back in a ponytail as she looked in the mirror and checked her appearance. Wearing a green business suit, a different style of glasses, some make-up, and with her hair pulled back, almost nobody would connect Melody Powers the reporter, with Daria the high school student. Picking up her press badge and camera, Daria headed to Ernie's to look for her prey."

  • Hugz (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Last Friday Night!), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "'I kissed your boyfriend. I kissed Tom. I didn't mean to.' Jane began to run off. 'Jane, wait!'"

  • Humpty Dumpty, by Smijey (part 2): "'Mn,' Daria replied noncommittally. 'Hey, are you okay?' Daria shot Jane a look. 'Right, of course not. But...what's on your mind?' Daria frowned, then spoke. 'Something Ms. Li said, about not getting any TV or radio broadcasts.'"

  • It Could Be Worse Than Tom (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Last Friday Night!), by Pumpkin Panic (COMPLETE!): "Daria walked into Jane's bedroom a freindly greeting dying on her lips, 'Oh god. I have to-' she felt sick."

  • John Lane 52: From the Last Step to the First, by RLobinske (part 4): "The thoughts that woke him up came back to his mind. Graduation. I made it. Wow. Now we have to move on to real life. At least we have the summer before then. Summer. What are we going to do until we leave for Boston? Helen isn't going to let us sit around on our asses, no matter how much we'd like to. We need a plan."

  • The Lawndale Adventure, by LadieT and The Angst Guy (part 2): "When he walked into the bar, the owner was yelling at the Captain, who bumped into him as he was staggering out the door, clutching a bottle of rum tightly in his grip. Mr. DeMartino turned and watched the captain leave with concern etched on his face."

  • Quinn's Code 05: Morgendorffers vs. Amazon, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 5): "'Yes, I believe that your younger daughter has potential. That is why I pressured the principal into making her attendance mandatory,' Romonica said. 'Pressured, how?' Romonica remained silent. Helen stared back."

  • Rude Awakening Ep.9: Join The Club, by DIsaac (COMPLETE!): "DARIA: Speaking of Sandi....You owe me forty dollars! JANE: Why? DARIA: Didn't you said Tom and Sandi wouldn't last 6 months? JANE: I said a year. You said 6 months and that still means I'm still alive in the pool."

  • Shadow of The Fade, by BrownEyedBagel (part 1): "The alarm buzzed as he lay there awake. Anthony had never dreamed about his former life, much less thought about it. In a violent display he grabbed the alarm clock and sent it at high velocity to the wall. He grumbled as he got out of bed, twenty five glorious years separated him from back then. A quarter of a century since he escaped with most of his sanity intact, since he left that baby with some beatnik woman who he would unfortunately end up sharing a town with years later."

  • Unnamed story (IC: Why was Trent was banned from the Bookstore?), by Vukodlak (COMPLETE!): "Trent and Monique entered the bookstore to buy her a copy of Violin. They had just come from seeing the film Titanic which premired a month prior. A lot of women from the theater were there looking for romance novels."

  • With An "Uh", And An "Um", by mmmdraco (parts 6 - 8): "'Daria, if you can't take me staying here, I understand. I'm sure I can find someplace else.' 'No,' she said firmly. 'Don't leave.' 'But if I'm going to make things too difficult for you,' Trent trailed off and glanced down at his thumb, nearly dry now, but lightly stained with the pomegranate's juice. 'I don't want to make you do anything that you don't absolutely want to do.'" (Part 7) (Part 8)

A Shocking Experiment!

On this day in 1752, Benjamin Franklin supposedly performed his famous kite/electricity experiment. Anthony DeMartino is attempting to recreate it, but that lightning can't be good for his eye.

Another significant event happened in fanfic ten years ago today, in Angelinhel's story 61501. Read the story to find out what it was, but you might want to brace yourself.

And speaking of fanfic, here's today's update:
  • Boxing Ms. Morgendorffer, by Chris Tucker (parts 2 - 4): "Something... a memory? A memory of a memory? Something was trying to make itself known in her mind, but was it actually a real memory? She knew better than to attempt to force it to the surface, That was a certain way to kill it. It'll come to her eventually." (Part 3) (Part 4)

  • Daria is Raven's Apprentice, by project pegasus: "(Raven glares at her) Daria: (spitting out the wine) What? (looking at the bottle) Oh yeah, hehe. (suddenly defensive) What makes you think that this isn't my bottle of wine? Raven: (snatching the bottle from Daria's hands) Because you aren't guzzling that wine out of a box!"

  • Daria, or the Confession of a Single Lonely Male, by Arena del Sur: "Let me evoke that scene in all its trivial and fateful detail: Potts writing out a receipt, shaking his head, pulling a drawer out of her desk, pouring change into my impatient palm, spreading a Lincoln over it with a bright '...and five!'; photographs of girl-children; the framed diploma of the camp's dietitian; my trembling hands; a card produced by efficient Potts with a report of Daria Morgendorffer's behavior for July ('fair; keen on verbal fencing'); an echo of trees and birds, and my pounding heart ..."

  • Esteemster Series, by TheExcellentS (part 5): "Daria: 'Listen. I'm not going to go into some long-winded monologue to try and get my point across right now. That's not my way. It's as simple as this. Axis, you have taken your last drops of blood from us. The only blood that will spill inside that ring tonight... will be your own. We are the riders of your apocalypse, and this will be the end of your days.'"

  • Lawndale Fighters: Suburban Warriors, by Erin M.: "It is not the Lawndale you know... In a world out on the far isolated edges of the Daria Multiverse is an undisturbed world. A dimension that has never been touched by any outside interference. And with good reason. It is a world at war with itself."

  • Let's (Not) Kill Hitler (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: It's Friday!!), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "'You couldn't kill Hitler on your Hitlerist killing day!' Daria said. 'You couldn't kill Hitler with an electronically-operated, positronic-powered Hitler killing machine! You couldn't kill Hitler with a map marked "Hitler is here" and if Hitler was wearing a sign on his head marked KILL HERE.'"

  • Little Jane, by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "My name's Janey Laney, and I'm only four years old! Today, my mommy told me we were going to Arrowzona to see some pretty pictures and pots and stuff. I wish my brother Trent could come, but mommy says he's big enough to look after himself now. He's ten! So mommy left him at the art colony (I want to go someday!) and I gave him a biiiiiig hug goodbye. He promised to write every week, and I promised to get mommy to read alllll his letters!"

  • Mad Dog's Legacy Chapter 9: Hard Time, by Hyrin (part 6): "Daria continued pacing as Helen knocked softly and opened the door without waiting for a reply. 'Girls? How would you feel about getting off your punishment a little early?' 'Not a problem at all,' Jane said quickly. 'Fine by me,' Daria added."

  • Man of the House, by Smijey: "Most of the remaining guests had the good taste to leave. Helen stayed because Quinn didn't want to leave Erin or Daria and Jane; I stayed because Daria and Jane didn't want to leave Quinn or Erin. All the other people who stayed did so simply to see if the evening would sour any more. They got their wish."

  • No Power in the Verse Can Stop Them, by Hyrin (parts 1 and 2): "Daria double-checked her pistol –an ancient but lovingly maintained Beretta from Earth-That-Was- and descended the ramp of her ship, watching anxiously as she maneuvered through the crowds. Approaching Badger's office building, she stepped aside as three people walked out, obviously angry. Was that…? That was Mal Reynolds! What in the flying Hell is he doing talking to a low-life like Badger?! Come to think of it, what am I doing talking to him?" (Part 2)

  • Not So Different 44: Failure As A Middle Name, by J-D (COMPLETE!): "Jane grinned. 'Thanks again.' She tipped her head to one side and decided it was safe to joke with him. He was still the same Sonny Morgendorffer as ever. 'Come round on Saturday so I can show you my appreciation by taking you out for pizza. I'll be waiting in bed for you with nothing but a sheet on.' Sonny raised an eyebrow in recognition. 'And I'll tell you to hurry up and get dressed and go downstairs to wait for you.'"

  • Not So Different 45: Happens While Making Other Plans, by J-D (COMPLETE!): "'So why are three boys trying to get on to our float?' 'Tiffany!' said Sandi. 'I am surprised at you! Have you learned nothing? How can we know that we are upholding the very highest standards of the Fashion Club if we do not have boys running after us?' 'Oh', said Tiffany. 'Right', she added, as Sandi and Stacy moved towards the back of the float, where the three boys were now trying to get aboard. Quinn stared helplessly."

  • Rude Awakening Ep. 6: Divas NOT Wanted!, by DIsaac (parts 8 and 9): "UPCHUCK: So how do I know when everybody has enough? MACK: For Daria, listen for “Quinn”. UPCHUCK: Quinn? MACK: Not the lawyer extraordinaire Quinn Mercer we know and love but Quinn Morgendorffer in high school - Annoying voice and all. If Daria starts sounding like Quinn it's time to get the drinks away from Daria." (Part 9)

  • Unnamed story (Bits & Pieces that just BEG to be made into Daria FanFic), by RLobinske (COMPLETE!): "Running for the TARDIS, the Doctor yelled over his shoulder, 'Morgan Song, make sure they get home!' Before anyone would intervene, he was inside and the TARDIS was gone."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: It's Friday!!), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): "She's falling."

He Probably Got a Charge Out of It

Less than a week ago this day, only 258 years ago, Benjamin Franklin is thought to have performed his famous kite experiment in Philadelphia, proving that lightning was electrical. He was lucky. Later other researchers were electrocuted while trying the same experiment. MTV artists were thoughtful enough to provide us with an illustration of that moment, borrowing Mr. DeMartino for the role. I hope his recovery is going well. (Yes, the illustration ran a few months ago for Franklin's birthday, but I like it and hope you do, too.)

Also today we celebrate famed singer Bif Naked's birthday, and we express our gratitude to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Naked, for having such a wonderful kid, especially since, as we all know, Bif Naked was the voice actress for Alison in Is It Fall Yet? She is really and truly the Superbeautifulmonster.

Later on I hope to have the new fanfics listed. Sorry for the wait.

[LATER] Okay, let's try it now. But first, the knewz.

THE KNEWZ!!!
  • Popular topic on PPMB: Influences. What Daria authors and stories have been major influences on your body of Daria fic? Self analysis of how they've influenced your work isn't required but will ultimately be helpful, links are also not required but again will be helpful.
  • LadieT has created a new Iron Chef Challenge, called What Happened Last Night.
PPMB
  • All Purpose Cultural Catgirl Quinn, by Wraith (Part 1): Marianne managed to shove Daria in to the cockpit of the helicopter, and climbed in after her before she could get back up. "You'll need more than an assault helicopter to get me in a tutu!" Daria shouted, repeatedly hitting Marianne on the helmet as the helicopter took off. (Daria/All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku)
  • Anti-Trope, by Minx (Part 3): Helen turned to her son and shot him a confused look. “What was that?” Dean shook his head, “That new academic record Li personally faxed over isn’t mine. Those impressive grades were bumped up because I won the football game for the school yesterday.” “Dean, now is not the time to make ludicrous claims like that. There is no way Ms. Li would have the authority to inflate your grades.”
  • Bathing with Archimedes, by RLobinske (Part 2): "Eh, you get used to weird stuff in this town." "How weird?" "Women showing up after the funeral of her clone." "Okay, that's weird. I bet people were talking about that for years." "It was last week."
  • Daria/Dorian, by LadieT (Part 3): Jane arrived home to see her answering machine beeping. Two were from Tom wondering if she was okay. The third was Dorian telling Trent that Jane had fallen asleep watching movies. She listened to his low monotone voice and sighed. She thought about the conversation she had with Quinn. Was she falling for Dorian? Did that mean she might have had those feelings for Daria? She shook her head.
  • The Dream of the White Darkness, by jtranser (continued): High over the small town of Pritchett, Colorado, Daria watched for the landing marker next to a dilapidated barn, then bailed out and pulled the cord of her chute. While not a textbook landing, she managed to contact the ground without any bone breakages or major bruises. She walked over to the car, a blue and white 1956 Buick Roadmaster, unlocked the trunk, and pulled out a suitcase. She went into the empty barn, threw in the chute, changed her clothes, then went back to the car and drove off toward Kansas. As she crossed the state line, she pondered the collapse of human relationships, the alienating effects of contemporary life and the erosion of social values—and it was only 10:30 in the morning.
  • Finn Morgendorffer 49: Blessed Be This Meal, by HolyGrail2007 (COMPLETE!): Finn called his ex early on the holiday morning, reasoning that she probably had to wake up early to go with that friend of hers to where he was going. “Happy Thanksgiving, Jane.” “You are way too damn cheerful in the morning. What did you do, not sleep?”
  • For Life, by LSauchelli (continued): Jane picked up her food tray and frowned. "Ugh! I hate it when the trays are wet." "That which does not kill us makes us stronger," Said Daria while taking another tray for herself. "What does that have anything to do with the tray being wet?" "Nothing, but you should probably keep that stuff to yourself. Food trays being wet are the least of your troubles." "Such as...? I'm already in a maximum security prison, how could it get any worse?"
  • Operation: Desperate, by Charles RB (Part 1): In the 1980s, the political climate in the United States saw UNIT fall out of favour. However, the US couldn't simply drop out, that would look bad. Instead, it just de-emphasized UNIT-USA in favour of domestic groups. The move of HQ to Lawndale was completed in 1989. Brigadier Angela Li was installed in 1997, June 1st, 1500 hours. The huge wave of cuts came in 1501 hours, starting with the toilet paper budget. The Great Dropout began on June 2nd. UNIT had to find new recruits who could meet up to the standards of those who'd left. Private Kevin Thompson was brought in June 3rd. (Daria/Doctor Who) (FF.net)
  • Raft College: The First Year, by rglovejoy (Part 7): "Sorry I woke you up, Jane." "S'ok. I gotta be at work at one. What's happening?" "Well, uh, I wanted to get your opinion on something..." "Yes, yes. Spill, Morgendorffer." "Uh, I'm meeting someone later today. He's this guy from one of my classes, and—" "Daria!" Jane squealed with delight. "You've got a date, don't you? I knew you'd get over Tom."
  • Something Unexpected, by Lord Akiyama (COMPLETE!): It was three in the afternoon when Trent Lane finally awoke from his slumber. Thirsty, he shuffled downstairs and made his way to the kitchen. He had just grabbed a cup from the sink when he looked up and noticed something in the backyard. He stood still, staring at the object for what seemed like days. It was actually ten minutes, but he clearly had not understanding of how time would just seem to flow when one's attention was absorbed upon something. That just gave him an idea for a song. He then noticed his sister walking into the kitchen. "Hey Janey..." "Yeah?" "Since when did the circus come to town?" "This morning while you were still asleep." "Ah..."
  • Tales of the Ringbearers—Bad Apple: The Second Raid, by Doggieboy (Part 3): Before any of the police officers at the house could move, Robert Nelson rushed up to the man with sergeant’s stripes on his helmet and grabbed his neck with his left hand. As he lifted the man with his TK powers, he pulled back his now-flaming right fist and said, “My wife and kids... where are they?” Three officers, one woman and two men, rushed Robert and tackled him as the others who had been moving furniture ran up to the other four Ringbearers.

I'm Shocked! Shocked, I tell you!

Benjamin Franklin, the man who did about everything there was to do for his time, celebrates his 304th birthday today. Thanks to Pinhead and UU for the little-known alter ego at right with Mr. DeMartino!

Also in the realm of birthdays, Popeye turns 81. Daria and Jane got to meet Popeye in one fanfic-in-progress. Popeye also gets mentioned in "Antisocial Climbers," in which it becomes clear that Mr. DeMartino (hey!) is a fan of his. I wonder why...
