Who Knew Authoritarians Could be Flexible?

It appears that Ms. Li is exhibiting some previously-unknown talents for International Yoga Day, but I think she should be careful. If she gets stuck on that bottom one, things could be very awkward at the next school board meeting. The Fashion Club might celebrate this one, as they've been shown to participate in power yoga, but only up to the point before they'd actually break a sweat.

Let's just hope Trent and the band decide to abstain from observing World Day of Music. The sound that Mystik Spiral produces might be charitably referred to as "music," but there aren't many that would define it as "good."

Someone should tell Kevin that today is World Motorcycle Day, because that would be a great opportunity for him to get his leather jacket and motorbike back out and recreate the scene from Jane's fourth birthday party. Just remind Brittany to keep her mouth closed to keep the bugs out.

Fanfic Update!
  • Dude, Where's my Life, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Brittany is giving her daughter, Angie, a very stern talking to. 'I can't believe you're throwing away your life to become a lesbian!'"

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 81 - 83): "Anna Coulthard had been fascinated by the surreal beauty of Somewhere Else since her very first day in that world, and yet now that it was November she had come to discover, happy and nostalgic at the same time, that it was indeed possible for her to love her new home even more." (Part 82) (Part 83)

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have), by roentgen (COMPLETE!): "It was December and the NBA season was on the way with the Washington Wizards - to borrow an analogy - jumping out of the gate with all of the other horses in the Derby, and then immediately breaking a leg."

Think Healthy, Eat Healthy, and Chase Rats With Fluffy Tails!

Looks like the Fashion Club is going to give World Meditation Day a try, but I'm not sure there would be much point. I mean, their minds have already been cleared of all thoughts, so why bother?

You could also try for a healthier lifestyle by celebrating Eat More Fruits and Vegetables Day...or just take them to the Food in Film Festival and throw them at the screen.

When Quinn has finished meditating and eating carrot sticks, I hope she finally chooses between her three admirers because it's the twenty-second anniversary of "One J at a Time" and those boys have got to be tired of waiting for her to make up her mind. Unless they've gone off on another squirrel-related adventure and forgotten all about her.

Downward-Facing Clogs

Who wants to join the Fashion Club for International Yoga Day? Don't all volunteer at once, now. I'm a little surprised that those girls are willing to try yoga, though. Aren't they concerned that they might accidentally break a sweat?

Today is also Father's Day, so let's hope Jake gets to spend some time on the golf course or at least doing something relaxing today. Quinn, that means go elsewhere with that credit card bill!

Finally, two years ago today the proposed Daria & Jodie series was announced on the AV Club website. It hasn't shown up yet, but in fandom hope lives on. See below for the latest developments!

Downward-Facing Divas

Anyone want to join the Fashion Club in some exercise for International Day of Yoga? Yeah, I didn't think so. Any peaceful meditation would be halted immediately by a snide remark (Sandi), mindless prattle (Quinn), a panic attack (Stacy) or...well, actually Tiffany might be the only one to just stay quiet, if only because she can't think of anything to say.

If yoga isn't your thing, there's also Take a Road Trip Day. Pack up the Tank and head off to Alternapalooza...or some unhelpful corn, if the van is feeling unreliable. On the bright side, you might get a bee sting out of the deal. Who could turn that down?

Fanfic Update!
  • Better Than Nothing (IC: Memed Spiral), by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "He'd wanted to be a poet, once. He'd wanted to use his voice and guitar like a hammer and chisel to break through the lies, to reach the cruel but beautiful truth at the heart of the world."

  • Daria the Vampire Slayer: Hell Comes To Texas, by Charles RB (part 11): "'If you feel invisible at high school... maybe you ARE! Look-through loners, next, on SICK SAD WORLD!'"

  • Daria vs. Terfs, by Peridaniel (part 2): "At lunch, the Fashion Club gathered around as they usually did reading their magazines and commenting on what was inside of them."

  • Getting By, by EntrancedCat (parts 4 and 5): "Just as Daria reached for the handle of Chez Lane's front door, the door was yanked open by her father, Jake Morgendorffer. Her dad almost collided with Daria and Jane as he stepped on the front step while talking to someone still inside." (Part 5)

  • Quinn Got In The Car, by Lady Evil (parts 8 and 9): "I wonder if I should wear shorts instead of a skirt. Daria pondered as she considered her scant wardrobe. Or maybe jeans like I did for Alternapalooza. It's getting too hot for the jacket. What kind of shirt should I wear? Ugh, I'm starting to sound like Quinn!" (Part 9)

  • Quinn's last steps, by RĂ©mi (parts 2 and 3): "The house of the Barksdale family is a cosy home in a well-off neighborhood. Several fencing trophies, and a sword on the wall, can be seen in the living room. Daria and Quinn are coming in, Daria pushing Quinn's wheelchair." (Part 3)

  • Scenes, by JPAGC (part 2.5): "The call was made just as her third period, economics, was starting. 'Will Daria Morgendorffer come to the nurse's office.'"

They Only Do the Fashionable Yoga Poses

The Fashion Club is getting surprisingly physical for International Yoga Day, but I suppose they've gotta work off those carrot sticks and diet soda somehow. Too bad Daria went off the air before the advent of selfies, or the girls would most certainly be posting pictures of themselves working out on social media for National Selfie Day. I think we're all grateful for that missed opportunity.

Fanfic Update!
  • 600 Years Afterward..... (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: 600 Years Afterward.....), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "'I think it's a time capsule.' 'What's a time capsule?' 'Oh, it's some thing people did back in, uh, 19th, 20th century. You bury it for a few decades and they can see what the past was like. A no-tech Wayback.'"

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (parts 15 - 16b): "It was early June. The children were bored and restless behind their desks, even the better-behaved ones. It seemed like forever until the school bell rang in the later afternoon, but it finally did ring." (Part 16a) (Part 16b)

  • Dylan, by J-D (part 35b): "'Those were two of the assistants from the production team for Miss Betty and Sally M', Rod said in answer to the question Dylan had just asked him. 'I was giving them directions. Mr Chung's given them a room to work from.'"

  • The Gift (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: 600 Years Afterward.....), by Vukodlak (COMPLETE!): "Daria sat down at the kitchen table next to her sister for breakfast like any other morning. Helen entered the kitchen glues to her phone per usual but stopped and was agape at what she saw."

  • The Interview, by dmsfanman (part 6): "Daria walked into the building at 8:59 am. Hattie was waiting for her in the lobby. Looking at the clock on the wall Hattie exclaimed, 'Good Morning, Daria. You are the first one here. If the others aren't here in 6 minutes they will be out of the running. Are you ready to do some work today?'"

  • Magician's Code, by Crow-Black Dream (parts 1 - 5): "Charles 'Upchuck' Ruttheimer III was and always had been too poetic for most people. Partnered with flaming red curls and freckles peppering his large dimpled cheeks, this tendency toward speaking in flowery prose proved too much for any one of his peers for as long as he could remember, regardless of his inherent cheerful disposition." (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5)

  • A Silver Penny, by Shiva (parts 1 and 2): "'Oh, honey? Don't drink from that big bottle in the kitchen; it's silver nitrate.' Jane's father said from within the only bathroom in the house." (Part 2)

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: 600 Years Afterward.....), by WacoKid (COMPLETE!): "'OK, students, settle down!' Ms. Li called from the podium. As the student body ignored her, she grew increasingly agitated, until finally snapping."

The Fitness Club?

One gets the impression from the Fashion Club's unenlightened attitude toward sports in "See Jane Run" that they are in poor physical shape. "Can you imagine joining an actual sport?" asks Sandi. "You'd get all sweaty and your makeup would smudge," Stacy adds. "You're supposed to date jocks, not be one," says Tiffany in agreement.

Yet the Fashion Clubbers might be in better shape than we think. For one thing, they all have Phys Ed class with Ms. Morris. An amusing picture showing exhausted FC members appears in The Daria Database. Sandi Griffin cannot swim in "Just Add Water," but Quinn has her doing exercise videos and laps in the school pool in "Fat Like Me." Plus, in "Monster" we learn that the FC members go together to a fitness club to do power yoga. Now, power yoga is not about sitting in a lotus position; it's all about strength and flexibility. "Power yoga is a really good thing to do," opines Quinn, "because inner beauty is just as important as outer beauty. Like, can you have a CD without a CD player? I don't think so!" I have no idea what she meant, but the FC does power yoga, and that's got to have a beneficial effect. It makes you feel for Uphuck in that "Fair Enough" scene where Sandi knees him in the groin, as her fitness training, voluntary or not, probably made that below-the-belt shot very, very painful.

Does the FC do muscle-toning weightlifting with small weights? Isometric exercises? Dance-exercise videos/DVDs? Long walks around the neighborhood? One thing for sure: they're probably in better overall physical shape than is Daria, though runner Jane is probably better off than all of them put together.
