Frankenstein Was the Scientist AND the Monster!

Jane is trying out a new style for Frankenstein Day, and I think she could do better. Then again, at least there's no hair dye involved. Also...is that Tom's sweater from "Jane's Addition"?

This whole thing just took a dark turn, didn't it?

Maybe Take It a Little Easy on the Wine, Though

Jane and Alison are enjoying National Red Wine Day, but Jake will stick to his usual martini. Helen will have whatever's available if she has to deal with either of her sisters for more than five minutes.

Today is also the anniversary of Leo Tolstoy's birth in 1828, which would probably be of interest to Aunt Amy. She did spend a lot of time "reading those weird Russian novels," after all.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (parts 7 and 8): "Matthew Stearne pulled in to the Bagpiper's parking lot. He didn't like the apartment complex; It was old, beat-up, and he didn't like his neighbors." (Part 8)

  • F is for..., by JAS (parts 2 - 4): "As the hot water flowed over her body, Quinn slowly felt herself to calm down. Warmth of the water drove away the coldness from within her. Now, awake and with the lights on, her nightmare seemed.. Well, a nightmare." (Part 3) (Part 4)

  • Happy Adversity, by Lady Evil (part 8): "'Daria....' Helen's voice sang out in the morning. 'Hm...wha?' she muttered. "Goway. Saturday." Daria rolled over. 'Daria, I'm sorry to wake you.' said Helen."

  • Harry Potter Morgendorffer, by Meester_Lee (part 34): "Daria's discovery of her magical powers had another consequence, one that she was aware of, but had previously left HJ to deal with alone: Support Group."

  • The Lion Meets the Mouse, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "That night, Stacy picked at her dinner as usual and then asked to be excused to make a phone call. 'Make it quick,' Brenda instructed her. Stacy looked up the Griffins' phone number and dialed it before she could lose her nerve."

Woof!

This sad little bulldog is hoping that Daria will refrain from trying to run him over with the car in honor of National Dog Day, but with her peripheral vision I wouldn't count on it. I just hope there's a puppy heaven to go along with kitty heaven.

In what had better be a coincidence, today also happens to be Women's Equality Day, to commemorate the Nineteenth Amendment being added to the United States Constitution on this day in 1920. This gave women the right to vote, but whether or not that translated into automatic equality is a matter for debate.

"No one will ever accuse these kids of being Reds!"

Jake's doing his part to enforce the Communist Control Act, which passed on this day in 1954. Melody Powers, meanwhile, will be taking a much more...proactive...role in enforcing the law.

Today is also International Strange Music Day, so this would be a good time to find out whether Trent is beckoning to a U.F.O., attempting to save humanity from aliens, or just writing a jingle.

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 12): "Jodie had begun to list various extracurricular activities when the bell rang. This saved Daniel, but only temporarily."

  • Daria in Capeside, by sonofapreacherman (COMPLETE!): "The Morgendorffers were on a road trip up the east coast, heading towards Maine. Jake took a wrong turn somewhere in Massachusetts. They were about to ask for directions when the car broke down."

  • The Lion Meets the Mouse, by Kristen Bealer (parts 2 and 3): "The rest of the day passed slowly, but Stacy began to pick up on a few things while she was supposed to be learning about multiplying fractions and the difference between a simile and a metaphor." (Part 3)

  • Never Again, by OzFerret (COMPLETE!): "Hot blood pumped through her fingers. Running down to cake her in filth."

  • Teaching is a work of heart, by Rémi (part 21): "Casa Lane. Jane's room. Jane is creating a sculpture by glueing together various items, while Quinn is seated on her bed. But the atmosphere between them is awkward. Jane isn't working with her usual spirit, and Quinn isn't prattling."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Saga Goes On), by JoeMerl (COMPLETE!): "The bell rang and a veritable stampede broke through the front doors of Lawndale High, hooting and cheering. Daria and Jane followed behind them at a more leisurely pace."

  • Windy City, by elainefr (COMPLETE!): "'Buy you a drink?' She didn't bother looking to see who it was. She simply signaled for another after finishing the one that she had."

"Oh, go dance on the head of a pin."

I don't know whom Daria and Jane think they're fooling, but at least they're trying to fit in on Be an Angel Day. I'm sure Quinn's guardian angel will be around, too, unless he's too busy playing his string thing.

Today is also the anniversary of Dorothy Parker's birth in 1893, which is worth mentioning because I strongly believe that she and Daria would have gotten along very well. With Parker's gift for satire and wisecracks, it would be a perfect match!

Bzzzzzz!

Well, someone is happy about World Mosquito Day, but it's not any of the humans that serve as their meal. I'll be celebrating with some DEET and a few good swats.

If you'd rather stay in than be dinner, then you could observe National Radio Day instead. What better way than by reading "Free Radio Lawndale" by Ken Tremberth & Erin Mills? Sure beats listening to Bing and the Spatula Man!

Fanfic Update!
  • Baby Fever (Life After Thirty), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn and Jim were in the checkout line loading groceries onto the conveyer belt. Behind them was a young brunette woman trying to soothe her crying baby. 'It's okay,' the woman said to her baby in a soft voice, 'Don't cry.'" (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 11): "Thank goodness it's over. Daniel thought when he walked out from the classroom. Mrs. Barch's voice was unbearable, even when she didn't scream."

  • Happy Adversity, by Lady Evil (part 7): "Daria lay on her bed looking through a gaming catalogue from Game Dash. She had a good idea what to get Link for his birthday. Trouble was, most of these systems were pretty pricey."

  • The Lion Meets the Mouse, by Kristen Bealer (part 1): "'You realize, I'm sure, that moving to a whole new town and starting your first day at a new school is difficult under even the best circumstances, right?' Brenda asked her daughter. 'Of course, Mother,' Stacy replied automatically."

  • Teaching is a work of heart, by Rémi (parts 18 - 20): "Morgendorffer household. Daria and Quinn are eating dinner. At the end of the meal, Quinn takes two apples from a fruit basket and shows them to Daria." (Part 19) (Part 20)

"Oh freddled gruntbuggly, / Thy micturations are to me / As plurdled gabbleblotchits on a lurgid bee."

Andrea's going to read you some of her original pieces for Bad Poetry Day whether you like it or not, so sit down and appreciate some poems about rotting bags of flesh. Otherwise she might send Quinn out to recite some gibberish about greasy fries.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Jane's Addition," which aired on this day in 1999. Love him or hate him, Tom was a significant change to the show, and you can't deny that he shook things up. Whether or not the result was positive or not is up for debate.

At Least She Looks Happy!

Andrea's really gotten into the spirit of Sports Illustrated's 65th birthday, and I can only imagine how Upchuck (assuming they're still an item) feels right now. Come to think of it, there's more than one alter ego of Andrea in a bikini, which makes you wonder which animator had a crush on the backgrounder goth chick.

Today is also Madonna's 61st birthday. For some great Daria character makeovers in the style of Madonna's various looks, check out Kemical Reaxion's The Ten Faces Of Madonna!

Fanfic Update!
  • Am I A Grownup Yet?, by jones2000 (COMPLETE!): "The Zeemobile pulled into the driveway of the Morgendorffer residence and the doors opened."

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (parts 9 and 10): "The next day Daniel and Quinn were walking to school. Along the way, Daniel asked his sister something that made them exclaim, 'You want what !?'" (Part 10)

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 6): "The Marshals apparated away with Stearne almost immediately afterwards. It was a rough landing; Stearne puked up the contents of his stomach when they arrived."

  • F is for..., by JAS (part 1): "F is for freshness! F is for friends! F is for fashion! Said the scarlet letters on a poster on Stacy's bedroom wall."

  • The Fugitive Meets The ThunderCats With Bizarre Noises Of Limbo, by Peter W. Guerin (COMPLETE!): "(We now see something akin to the old Cartoon Network 'Cartoon Cartoons' bumper they had in the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, except we see the Mark Zero Fan Fiction logo, which then zooms out. We now see the words 'EXCLUSIVE CREATIONS' form, then we see Snarf's head pop out of the 'O' in 'CREATIONS')."

  • Happy Adversity, by Lady Evil (part 6): "Link took off his glasses and closed his eyes. Jesse spritzed Link's black curls with a misting bottle. 'The trick is to get it all wet first.' he said as he sprayed. 'Then just start at the tip and work your way up. Wide toothed comb works best.'"

  • Jane's Provenance, by EntrancedCat (COMPLETE!): "Nathan Rothko suppressed a shudder as the rail-thin shop girl's white knees flashed through her torn jeans as she came out of the back room of Stationary Jerry."

  • Lawndale Races (Iron Chef: Newly Employed in Other Media), by JPAGC (part 1): "[Narrator] - AAAAANNNNNDDDD... it's LAWNDALE RACES! The Whackiest set of auto racing pilots contesting a perilous off-road cross-country race in the county of Lawndale! Cars that will defy torrid desert sands (images of empty desert), daredevil mountain roads (images of narrow roads in high altitudes, surrounded by mountains) and neck-breaking highways where flying speeds can be reached... (image of a straight and empty large road in the middle of nowhere)"

  • To Reflect, by IRavenous (part 4): "The family car veered out of sight, no doubt with Helen on the phone to Eric about something work-related. She hadn't even had a chance to have a second thought, something Helen seemed to have relied upon."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Newly Employed in Other Media), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "'So?' Morty asked. 'Uh, Rick, what's going on and why do I have a new sister?'"

Fiiiiiiiiiilm?

Tiffany's showing off one of the show's more obscure alter egos as director/screenwriter Lina Wertmüller, who was born on this day in 1928. I would hate to see any movie created by Tiffany, though. It would probably just be two straight hours of Tiffany staring into a mirror.

Today is also the anniversary of Doc Holliday's birth in 1851. Holliday is known for his role in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, but gets far less credit for his participation in the Okay to Cry Corral. I heard his lanyards sucked.

Quinn is ready for her close-up with Cecil B. DeMille, who was born on this day in 1881. I sure hope the late director was a fan of yoga and questions about her best side.

Today is also International Youth Day, so I'll be celebrating with my own favorite youths! Daria, however, will take a pass. "I don't like kids. I didn't even like kids when I was a kid."

Fanfic Update!
  • Chuck And Stacy: An Unlikely Love Story, by WildDogJJ (parts 2 - 4): "Chuck is showing Stacy how he did his trick. Stacy is amazed by just how simple it was. 'So, you had two tens!?'" (Part 3) (Part 4)

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 8): "That same afternoon, in her office, Angela Li was reading the reports sent to her by Mrs. Manson about the six new students. All things considered, she was satisfied."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 5): "At first, Ellen thought that just reporting Stearne's activities would be the end of her part of it, but when it was Marshal Dillon from the Marshal's office that called her back, she suspected that it wouldn't be."

  • First One Out of the Pan, by EntrancedCat (part 4): "'So, Mom, Dad,' Daria paced the living room in front of the TV, her rage giving her roles as presiding judge, duly seated jury, and ever-so-angry prosecutor. 'Did you bring her back to finish the job?'"

  • The Second Kiss, by Felix_Nicolea (COMPLETE!): "'Jane.' There was relative silence for several seconds. 'Oh, that's me,' Jane finally replied sarcastically, 'I thought if I just waited, you might keep talking.'"

Here, Kitty Kitty GAHHH!!!

Jake thinks he's wishing Mr. Whiskers a happy International Cat Day, but he's really just moments away from the worst claw attack of his life. If you have a cat (or cats), give them an extra snuggle or just leave them alone, which they'd probably enjoy more.

Also, on this day in 2008, Daria revealed her greatest retail regret to Racked. Read the interview and see the original artwork!

Fanfic Update!
  • The Cause (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Saga Goes On), by OzFerret (part 1): "Daria looked around the room, taking in the faces of each of her compatriots. 'You all know why we are here tonight?' Daria asked. Everyone nodded. Daria's expression was rarely considered cheerful, but tonight she looked grim."

  • Chuck And Stacy: An Unlikely Love Story, by WildDogJJ (part 1): "Charles Ruttheimer the Third was positioned at the entrance to the Lawndale Mall. He was trying to wow passerby with his magic act. He was calling himself Charles The Prestidgitator. He had to admit the name was lame but it was all he could come up with so he went with it."

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 7): "'DeMartino !?' asked Jake. 'Yes.' Daniel replied. 'Crazy Eye DeMartino !?' asked Jake again. 'That's what he said.'"

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (parts 2 - 4): "Daria joined her first potion-making class a week later. It was held at Mrs. Ocampo's, but not in her home. Instead it was held in a building behind it." (Part 3) (Part 4)

  • First One Out of the Pan, by EntrancedCat (part 3): "Next morning, Daria heard a commotion in the garage indicating that at least her father was home. She got up from her spot under the window to open the access door."

  • God Save the Esteem: AU Where Rita Goes Punk (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Saga Goes On), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "Helen was sprawled out on her couch in Highland, surrounded by half a dozen other unconscious types. A gentle knocking came at the door; this failed to rouse anybody. After a long moment, the door was forcefully kicked open. 'Helen!' Rita shouted, as she stormed in. 'Where the heck are you?'"

  • In The Year 2019, by JAS (COMPLETE!): "First thing Daria became aware of when she woke up, was the headache. Next thing was that her mouth was dry and tasted like something died there."

  • Pack Mentality, by atiyatortilla (part 3): "It wasn't easy being a seventeen year old girl, especially when you had a horrible secret."

  • The Pilgrim's Inertia, by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "Daria awoke with her entire body feeling like an enormous ache covered in dirt. At this point, she'd have been happy to deal with mom's judgmental aura if it meant a soft bed and warm food." (Part 5) (Part 6)

  • Rowe And Moreno: Taking The "C-Bus", by DIsaac (part 3): "DANI: STOP! That is NOT what happened! STACY: I'm improving the story! DANI: BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT HAPPENED AT ALL! "

  • Teaching is a work of heart, by Rémi (part 17): "Morgendorffer household. Daria is answering the phone. Daria (monotone voice) : Daria Morgendorffer speaking. Helen's voice : Hi, Daria ! I'm glad to reach you at last. I've been waiting for fresh news of Quinn and you for a while. Seriously, it wouldn't kill you to call your parents from time to time."

  • They Never Sleep (Daria and the Gang), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "'Do you really think this is a good idea, Jane?' Daria and Jane walked into the laboratory where Daria worked as a part-time cryogenecist. She had a newly-minted master's degree from Raft University with a specialty in biology and cryogenics."

Daria's Fifteen Minutes of Fame

Daria's wishing a happy birthday to the late artist Andy Warhol, who was born on this day in 1928. Jane's probably jealous that she's only featured in the alter ego as the artwork rather than the artist, but she can share the spotlight. She's probably used to that by now, anyway.

Today is also National Root Beer Float Day, so help yourself to a scoop of ice cream and a root beer...in a frosty cold can!

Open Swim!

I see Daria is in costume for Coast Guard Day, and I must say that it's nice to see she put Dr. Shar's practice boobs to good use. I'm pretty sure Beavis and Butt-head would both keel over and die at the sight of her, and I'm sure that's reason enough for Daria.

Today is also Sisters Day, and whether or not Daria celebrates that one depends on whether or not Quinn's claiming her as a sister or a cousin today. If nothing else, I'm sure Jane would be willing to loan out one of hers. If she can find either of them.

Finally, today is the anniversary of the episode "The Lawndale File" on this day in 1999. It turned out that Lawndale wasn't infested with aliens, but that doesn't make the town one bit normal as far as Daria and Jane were concerned.

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 6): "So far so good. Daniel thought as he finished eating. His parents were in a good mood that night."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (COMPLETE!): "The Morgendorffers again attended Thanksgiving Dinner at the Temple in Sweetwater. Helen had thought of staying home this year, but Jake argued that this was likely to be the last time Daria would be able to come for some time, especially if she went off to boarding school." (Part 82) (Epilogue)

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 1): "It was very early New Year's Day. Another year had started for the young witches and wizards of Highland, Texas, a year rung in by eating black eyed peas for good luck."

  • The Pilgrim's Inertia, by welltemperedclavier (parts 1 - 3): "The air in the Morgendorffer house had grown stifling. Maybe it was the rising heat of late spring, made humid by vapors from the Odai River and the swamps of the Bitter Coast. Maybe it was mom's sullen disappointment as she dwelled on her eldest daughter's latest networking failure. Maybe it was just the inevitable result of four people crammed into a single home." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Teaching is a work of heart, by Rémi (parts 15 and 16): "Morgendorffer household. Daria is busy working, sitting in a chair in the living room, when Quinn comes in. Quinn : Guess what, Daria ? I've been accepted into a really exclusive modeling class ! Daria sighs." (Part 16)

  • Unnamed story (Walter's assorted stuff), by Walter Kovacs (part 1): "The atmosphere in Pepped Up Cafe Franchise #2984 was unhappy and grim this morning, even more grim than the usual atmosphere one gets in a giant, rundown space station."

  • You Want It Darker , by LSM (part 12): "It was the kind of place that Jane had come to love. A little haven on the Lower East Side."

Ninety-Nine Bottles of BEER!

Brittany's right on time for International Beer Day! Where's Kevin? Well, he started celebrating hours ago and is already in the hangover stage. Quinn the Keg Queen will be swinging by later with some additional refreshments, though!

Speaking of doing things you'll regret, today is also the anniversary of the episode "Dye! Dye! My Darling" on this day in 2000. Daria was not drunk on beer or anything else when she kissed Tom behind Jane's back, but I'm sure she was tempted to drown her sorrows afterward.
