Will the Cookies be Heart-Shaped?

It looks like Helen and Rita are taking the easy route to celebrating National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, but only if the chips are already in the dough. I figure, as long as there are chocolate chip cookies at the end of it, the day has been a success!

Note: this is my general philosophy on life every day.

Just make sure the cookies aren't suspicious, because it's the anniversary of the episode "The Lawndale File" in 1999 and you don't want those mysterious agents to come snooping. Oh, no! What if the cookies look like atomic communists from Mars?

Is There an Alien Coast Guard?

While I applaud Daria's enthusiasm for U.S. Coast Guard Day, I have to point out that in spite of their maritime mission the Coast Guard uniforms don't look anything like that. Then again, Daria doesn't technically look anything like that, either, so anything goes!

Today is also the anniversary of "The Lawndale File," which aired on this day in 1999. While no one turned out to be an alien (as far as we know), we did end on a shot of Daria and Jane that makes the swimsuit image look prudish.

Fanfic Update!
  • Family Ties, by Spikesnifty09 (COMPLETE!): "'That's a picture of your cousin Bravery graduating from Prince Academy.' King Charming told his children."

  • Kevin's Obsession, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Kevin, Jim, Chuck and Jamie were seated on the front porch enjoying the late summer day while drinking beer." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Quinn's Code 16: The Geek's Expose, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 5): "Daria was seeing red. Kristen's mother had let everyone else in!"

  • Sisterly Forgiveness, by UnbiasedStorytellerno1 (COMPLETE!): "'Hey Daria!' 'Hey Jane..' Jane ran down the street to where Daria was slowly treading to school."

  • Stranger Without Time, by Spikesnifty09 (part 5): "Anna was walking to her science class when she spotted a girl but, this girl made Anna's heart pour."

You Know What, Helen? I Actually DO Like My Cookies Undercooked!

I think we're going to be having a sweet snack for National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, but with Rita and Helen in charge I wouldn't get my hopes up. Still, I'd rather leave it up to them than let Daria and her way-too-creepy smile get involved.

Speaking of creepy, it was on this day in 1999 that the episode "The Lawndale File" first aired. Daria and Jane found out that there were no aliens lurking around Lawndale, but there wasn't any intelligent life amongst its human occupants, either.

Open Swim!

I see Daria is in costume for Coast Guard Day, and I must say that it's nice to see she put Dr. Shar's practice boobs to good use. I'm pretty sure Beavis and Butt-head would both keel over and die at the sight of her, and I'm sure that's reason enough for Daria.

Today is also Sisters Day, and whether or not Daria celebrates that one depends on whether or not Quinn's claiming her as a sister or a cousin today. If nothing else, I'm sure Jane would be willing to loan out one of hers. If she can find either of them.

Finally, today is the anniversary of the episode "The Lawndale File" on this day in 1999. It turned out that Lawndale wasn't infested with aliens, but that doesn't make the town one bit normal as far as Daria and Jane were concerned.

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 6): "So far so good. Daniel thought as he finished eating. His parents were in a good mood that night."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (COMPLETE!): "The Morgendorffers again attended Thanksgiving Dinner at the Temple in Sweetwater. Helen had thought of staying home this year, but Jake argued that this was likely to be the last time Daria would be able to come for some time, especially if she went off to boarding school." (Part 82) (Epilogue)

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 1): "It was very early New Year's Day. Another year had started for the young witches and wizards of Highland, Texas, a year rung in by eating black eyed peas for good luck."

  • The Pilgrim's Inertia, by welltemperedclavier (parts 1 - 3): "The air in the Morgendorffer house had grown stifling. Maybe it was the rising heat of late spring, made humid by vapors from the Odai River and the swamps of the Bitter Coast. Maybe it was mom's sullen disappointment as she dwelled on her eldest daughter's latest networking failure. Maybe it was just the inevitable result of four people crammed into a single home." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Teaching is a work of heart, by RĂ©mi (parts 15 and 16): "Morgendorffer household. Daria is busy working, sitting in a chair in the living room, when Quinn comes in. Quinn : Guess what, Daria ? I've been accepted into a really exclusive modeling class ! Daria sighs." (Part 16)

  • Unnamed story (Walter's assorted stuff), by Walter Kovacs (part 1): "The atmosphere in Pepped Up Cafe Franchise #2984 was unhappy and grim this morning, even more grim than the usual atmosphere one gets in a giant, rundown space station."

  • You Want It Darker , by LSM (part 12): "It was the kind of place that Jane had come to love. A little haven on the Lower East Side."

Remember, It's Not What You Put Into the Cookies, It's What You Put INTO the Cookies!

Helen and Rita are a little nervous about National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, because heaven forbid they attempt the arduous task of stirring some chocolate chips into cookie batter. Daria, depending on her mood, might bake a plate of heart-shaped cookies to creep Kevin out again.

Today is also International Beer Day, and the Keg Queen will be here shortly with the refreshments. Kevin, meanwhile, will be counting down the beers from ninety-nine, although I'm frankly shocked the boy is able to count that high--let alone backwards.

Finally, it was on this day in 1999 that the episode "The Lawndale File" first aired. I don't know about anyone else, but I wouldn't mind seeing a fanfic about what, exactly, Mr. DeMartino went through when he was taken in by those immigration agents. Any ideas?

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria (and other characters) on the Defiant Round Robin, by EntrancedCat (part 56): "Noag, Commander and Owner of the Ferengi casino ship Golden Table, strode alongside Admiral Daria Victoria Morgendorffer. Daria Victoria was leading her landing party of Daria Judith Morgendorffer; Ashley Spinelli; Conan of Cimmeria; Winry Rockbell; Holly Golightly; Number Six and Paste-Pot Pete."

  • Daria of Asgard, by Meester_Lee (parts 4 and 5): "The matron exited the de facto audience-chamber a short time later and walked over to the two girls. She was followed by another gold-armored guard, dressed like the ones who had escorted them into the city and then into the palace." (Part 5)

  • That Summer, by The Central Scrutinizer (parts 15 and 16): "Daria was still asleep at the dining room table when her family came home and jolted her awake. 'Gah-DAMNIT! Helen, it's this damn credit card again! It says I owe them--'" (Part 16)

  • Unnamed story (World's Medium-Sized Crossover), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Sandi, Quinn, and Stacy were busy help decorate for Sandi's party. It would be the last Homecoming party they would ever have together, and they wondered what they would all be doing same time next year."

I Think Daria Had Her Bursts Done

Daria is ready and waiting to dive in and rescue anyone who might be drowning on this fine Coast Guard Day. Unless they interrupt her reading. Or the Sick, Sad World marathon. Or her pizza time with Jane.

On second thought, maybe everyone should just stay in the shallow water for awhile.

Or, since this is also the 15th anniversary of "The Lawndale File," we could just hope atomic communists from Mars step in and rescue the poor soggy victims.

Friends, Forgiveness, and Freaks

Today is Friendship Day, and in honor of the holiday I thought I'd share the moment when Daria and Jane first met. Sorry, Quinn and Sandi, but you'll have to wait for Frenemies Day.

This is also International Forgiveness Day, which is also appropriate to Daria and Jane because Jane eventually forgave Daria for the events that took place in "Dye! Dye! My Darling," which was mentioned in the previous blog post. I'm not sure I would have been so gracious in Jane's place, though. Seriously, very bad puns. Blech.

Finally, it was on this day in 1999 that the episode "The Lawndale File" first aired. Three words. Alien. Love. Goddesses.

Atomic Communists from Mars!

Happy anniversary to the episode "The Lawndale File," which first aired on this day in 1999. In addition to the classic alien love goddesses image over there, this episode gave us Trent's hell music as well as the return of Artie, which no one demanded but we got it all the same.

Fanfic Update!
  • Adventures of Tommy Sherman I (Scenes no Daria fanfic should ever have: Trip Cyclone), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "'The Reichstag fire is exactly what we have been waiting for,' said Hitler. 'With this as a pretext we can wait who the hell is that?'"

  • At the Crossroads...(Chapter 13), by oni (part 2): "'So what are Tweedledee and Tweedledom doing for the holidays,' asked Daria hours later in a booth at the Pizza King. Daria and Jane were seated on one side of the booth while the girlfriends were seated on the other side; Quinn was in a chair at the end that she grabbed from an empty table."

  • Baby Bumps (Scenes no Daria fanfic should ever have: Trip Cyclone), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "Everywhere in Lawndale High the latest trend was making waves, and that trend just happened to be... Baby Bumps!"

  • The Creepyling Chronicles, by Charles RB (part 2): "Daria had insisted - when wearing a paboose to carry Mafalda at the shops, he should have the infant facing him."

  • The Eleventh Hour (Scenes no Daria Fanfic should ever have: Embrace the Madness), by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): "Two bodies writhed and twisted on the narrow dorm bed, their breathing fast and uneven as they raced toward climax."

  • The Hearts Within, by neonhomer (part 9): "'So, when did you want to get together?' 'We can do something this weekend.' I said. 'Sounds like a plan.' He said. 'Just one thing.' 'Let me guess, no Jane.' I said. Tom hesitated. 'Yeah.'"

  • Into the Black, Into the Blue (Chapter 2), by Lord Yellowtail (part 5): "Even in the dim light cast by the intersection’s one working streetlamp, the man’s features were unmistakable. Tall, thin, solid black punk-inspired ensemble and matching duster. Years of experience and training make sure Billy doesn’t miss the thickly muscled, deadly body underneath. Black-painted fingernails, ghost-white hair combed straight back, and a self-satisfied smirk under glittering eyes."

  • Lawndale and Sandi Griffin’s Genie (Chapter 8), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "Daria, Stacy and Trent arrived back at the Lane’s house. 'We need to hurry our search,' Daria said. 'The black and white isn’t that bad,' Trent said. 'It is bad!' Stacy said as she opened the front door. 'You’re talking about this black and white?' Jane asked from the living room. 'Yes.' 'Then we do need to find the emerald as quickly as possible. An artist needs color!'"

  • The Next Gen of Sloanes (Scenes no Daria Fanfic should ever have: Embrace the Madness), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'Gotta let my big green eyes shine,' Tommy had thought to himself that morning, willing to endure itchy eyes to avoid wearing his glasses, he hated those things! They made him look like such a nerd!"

  • Of Another Man's Guitar, by peapotmaster (part 3): "BRIAN: What kind of sick minds would watch this garbage? STEWIE: I love the part where they maimed Scrappy Doo. BRIAN: I stand corrected."

  • Out of the Frying Pan (Pictures), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "As a cruel reward for her intelligence, Daria was promoted to assistant manager after just four months. The new job meant marginally more pay but much more responsibility. It meant dealing with stupid customers, and angry customers - who were usually one and the same."

  • A Resentful Cynic Ch.4 : Revenge of the Malled, by ST91 (part 7): "A smile appeared on Andrea's face as she walked toward her friend’s house; no one had noticed the exchange of bags and this would give her an excuse to talk with Jane without Daria suspecting something."

  • Runaway Daria: Fallout Lawndale Edition, by Vukodlak (part 8): "One guy caught her eye, he obviously bathed regularly easily every week or more, that plus his clean-cut hair, military grade body armor and shiny clean submachine gun told her he came from money."

  • Sexy Daria: Lab Lockdown Sex, by Shiva (part 1): "'Skylar sweetie,' Daria said through clenched teeth and a painted smile, 'Your parents are nice and all but how do you put up with these parties?' 'I grit my teeth and bare it.' Skylar replied through his own gritted teeth."

  • Sorry, Marvel (Scenes no Daria Fanfic should ever have: Embrace the Madness), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "'FOR FREEDOM!'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should ever have: Trip Cyclone), by Aloysius (COMPLETE!): "'I did it. I kissed your girlfriend.'" (Continued by breitasparrow)

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should ever have: Trip Cyclone), by BrownEyedBagel (COMPLETE!): "GothicRainbow: Hey, been away for awhile. Just curious to see how the fandom has changed since I was gone."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should ever have: Trip Cyclone), by peetz5050 (COMPLETE!): "'Why did we have to come HERE though? I thought you swore never to set foot in this town again.' The pre-teen girl on the other side of the child seat spoke up then. 'Yeah Mom, I heard you describe Lawndale as the absolute arsehole of nowhereville and you wouldn't be caught dead in it!'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes That Should Be: Breakfast of Zombie Champions), by Ranger Thorne (incomplete plot bunny): "As Jane approached the school, the usual mental cursing was cut short as she noticed the long black car pull into the curved drive at the front of Lawndale High. The driver was exposed to the weather, while the passengers were covered by a cloth top, which was also black. Is that a Packard? she asked herself. As she approached, however, all thought about the car faded."

  • The Waif and the Pedo'Neill (IC: Sleeping With Strangers (But Not Like That!)), by Aloysius (COMPLETE!): "He looked down at his naked body and raised his eyebrows. 'Oh, my!' he whispered, and blinked as he struggled to remember if he might have actually gone out, and found a one-night stand."

  • You Know My Name (Scenes no Daria fanfic should ever have: Trip Cyclone), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "'I thought we could later discuss my plans for the evening,' he said in a faux-husky voice. 'So not my plans.' He smiled. It didn't look right. 'Let's not play games here.'"

  • ZOMG and the Gupty's (Scenes no Daria fanfic should ever have: Trip Cyclone), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'Hey sis, do you know what ZOMG means?' 'ZOMG?' Tricia repeated in confusion... 'No I have no idea what that means, did you try the dictionary?'"

Keep Watching the Skies!

On this day in 1999, the episode "The Lawndale File" first aired. A lot of fun stuff happened in this one, including Trent's paranoia-inducing upbeat songwriting, the wacky "atomic Communist from Mars" thing, and an encore appearance from everyone's favorite weirdo, Artie!

Several fanfics have been inspired by that episode, including Richard Lobinske's It's That Guy and The Angst Guy's And I on the Opposite Shore Will Be. In spite of his few canon appearances, Artie has appeared in too many fanfics to list. This is probably some kind of sinister alien plot. (Nods knowingly)

Fanfic Update!
  • And Soon It Will Be Morning (Iron Chef: If I Forget You), by The Angst Guy (COMPLETE!): "'Trent,' said the doctor, 'the police are investigating what happened, but you don't have any time to think about that. I have more to tell you and it won't be easy. Your sister is gravely ill. I can't—I'm sorry, we got you here as quickly as we could after we found out what had happened, but I can't promise you Jane will even make it through tonight.' The bottom of the world dropped out from below Daria's feet. She hung for an instant, weightless in the air, then began to fall into an infinite depth."

  • Daria, or the Confession of a Single Lonely Male, by Arena del Sur: "–Look –Da said as she puts down the empty glass, two fingers drumming in the edge–, look, I've decided something. I want to leave school. I hate that place. I hate the play, I really do! Leave at once. Go for a long trip again. But this time we'll go wherever I want, won't we? I nodded. My Daria."

  • Dark Future: Road Worrier, by Charles RB (part 4): "Two of the bikers were accelerating, crossing the gap fast and separating to pull in alongside both sides of the RV. Standard practice for them, two to target the driver or tyres, the rest to sweep in at the crash and overwhelm any survivors. But if you surrendered, they’d probably let you off with just a few beatings."

  • Green Dragon Rising, by Grifter74: "The Rangers were fighting a large group of putties when Kim heard a soft voice say "I need to borrow this" and her blade blaster was slipped out of her holster. Then suddenly all the putties vanished, leaving only the rangers and a figure wrapped in a dark green cloak and hood that hid all detail from view standing at opposite ends of a street. 'Greetings, Rangers. I bring a message from Empress Rita. Surrender now, and your deaths will be quick.'"

  • Jack Of Hearts, by RX-87 (part 1): "Daria noticed Jake was sweaty and uncomfortable and visibly trying to hide it as they took in Boston's sights. Still, she tried to humor him and just enjoy things, as she still hadn't gotten the chance to explore her new surroundings herself, between schoolwork and her part time job at the public library. It occured to Daria that perhaps she should have paid more attention to her father's poor condition when they finally located the stairs where the exterior shots of Cheers were filmed and he promptly collapsed and went tumbling down them."

  • Lost in the Place Where Time Stands Still (Iron Chef: If I Forget You), by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): "Trent peaked into the clean white room and saw his sister sitting in a comatose state. According to the doctor she just barely registered her current caretaker presence; her hoped Trent might get a better response but asked that her not jog her memories at this time as it might cause her to have an even more devastating break down. He should also avoid mentioning any events that led up to the trip as she remembers nothing relating to it."

  • Mellow-Drama, by The Angst Guy (COMPLETE!): "Sensing she was now walking alone, Daria Morgendorffer stopped and turned to face her friend. She looked at the floor by Jane's boots instead of looking into those stunned blue eyes. 'I kissed your boyfriend. I kissed Tom. I didn't mean to.'"

  • Save the Last Trance for Me, by jtranser: "'Jane, the last parade I went to was back in Lawndale, where I got to: see a float catch fire, look for Tad Gupty's parents, be molested by Mr.O'Neill dressed as a furry, get captured by the Fashion Club, and run into Tom, thus starting the destruction of your relationship with him and the beginning of another, namely with me. All in all, a day filled with events irritating, amusing and toxic. So, on this parade business, I'm going to ask you: do I have to?'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef - Jodie the Inventor), by Chris Tucker: "Colonel White realized the inappropriate nature of his comment. 'Begging your pardon, Miss Landon, I was definitely NOT referring to yourself, but to THAT!' He pointed to something behind her. She turned to look. Her jaw dropped, her eyes went wide."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Poly Wolly Doodle All Day), by RLobinske (COMPLETE!): "Not very impressed with the new school, Daria wearily opened the door and said, 'Mom, Mom, Mom, I'm home.'"

  • Unnamed story (PLOT BUNNIES: free to good home), by Ranger Thorne: "Catherine had long since become familiar with the tunnels that ran beneath New York City, enabling her to quickly get ahead of whoever it was that was walking down the tunnel. Finally, she turned a corner and was rewarded when a flashlight beam shined in her face. 'I was wondering when someone would come after me,' came a young female voice."

Mad Dogs and Aliens

Daria's brief flirtation with paranoia, "The Lawndale File," aired 11 years ago today. It poked fun at xenophobia, though I am sure Mr. DeMartino was less amused by it than others were. Some memorable quotes:
  • "Curse you different ones and your insidious logic!"
  • "If there were any aliens smart enough to come here, they wouldn't be stupid enough to come here."
  • "Daria, is anything wrong with Quinn?" "If this weren't a school day, I might have the time to begin answering that."
  • "Quinn, is anything wrong with Daria?" "If this weren't a school day, I might have time..."
  • "All of a sudden, she doesn't like aliens." "Who does? Aliens impregnate you and then they pop out of your chest and kill you while you're trying to eat lunch. What's to like? Gotta go! Bye!" "What exactly are they teaching about immigration at that school?"
  • "You're talking implants?" "I heard that, and it's not true!" "I guess she thought you meant her UFOs."
  • "Hey, Quinn, Mr. O'Neill says that girl from your house is an atomic communist."
  • "I knew it! It's just like when they made us have pep rallies for field hockey. We're being invaded by communists!"
  • "Remember that game when you fell on your head? Remember how you thought Vince Lombardi was sending you plays from hell?" "Heaven, bro! Vince Lombardi did not go to hell."
  • "But... if Quinn's cousin is an atomic communist from Mars, shouldn't she have a more interesting outfit?"
  • "I won't be sorry to see this day end." "You say that every day." "Oh, yeah."
  • And the best line of all: "There's something out there. Something stupid."
'Nuff said. In other developments...

This is Saint Sithney's Day, honoring the patron saint of Mad Dog Morgendorffer mad dogs. It is also the birthday anniversary of humanitarian Raoul Wallenberg and the 49th birthday of the current President of the United States.

NOo0Z!
PPMB
  • Daria/Dorian 6: Christmas Chaos, by LadieT (Part 3): "How is Dorian doing?" "Well, he really had a hard time after the economics project. We got in a big argument over nothing. Later that day, he finally opened up about how he was feeling. I think he really needed that." "I'm glad he has you, Jane. I wish Gregory had as good a friend as you when this happened to him. Maybe he would have turned out differently."
  • Finn Morgendorffer 55: Dreamer Without a Cause, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 2): “What’s the good word?” Tom asked. Between the lawsuit, the State Championship, and Finn’s own grades, which were not as good as Daria’s but commendable, Tom reasoned that Finn would get in. He knew how to dazzle and how to impress. “Bromwell? I got in.” Finn replied. “Good. I knew you could do it.” “Didn’t you say that to Daria too?” “Two different situations.”
  • The Lane That Wasn't, by LadieT (Part 13): As Daria wheeled through the living room, she paused to catch a moving scene. Helen had her arms around Jane and was crying. Jane looked as though she was trying to console their mom. I want to capture this on paper. She went into her room and started sketching. A few minutes later, Jane came and walked over to Daria. "Hey, squirt. What are you working on?"
  • Pulp Fiction: Africa, by Chris Tucker (Part 3): "I think my mouth wrote a check my ass can't cash." "That business with the girl? Her name is Zelde, by the way. Had a chat with her earlier. Wonderfully brave girl. Came all that way hoping we could help. Of course we will. May I see that outline you've been working on?" Why am I still surprised when he does something like that? I really should be used to it by now.
  • Satisfied, by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): Daria sat in her room enjoying the silence as she attempted to finish writing a story. However, her concentration was soon broken by blaring music. Daria got up and shut the door, but no avail: the music was too loud. She opened the door and headed over to her sister's room. Staring at the insanely chipper pink room, she felt an urge building that she normally suppressed.
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria and Jane pregnant at the same time), by McKeon (COMPLETE!): "So, how did we get into this situation again?" "Well, somehow, Quinn managed to persuade us to go out on a triple date with her and the J's." "And that leads to this how?" "Well, I have strong suspicions that the punch was spiked." "And that lead to this how?" "Quinn may have given them the impression our outcast attitudes came from lack of a good lay."

It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fried)

Today is a special day in science. This is the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the greatest solar eruptions known in history. It was a butt-kicker. Fortunately the most complicated things we had at the time were telegraphs, but even those got knocked out. This is the event that spawned the Daylight shared multiverse setting. If the 1859 eruptions happened today, we'd have major problems. Daylight, of course, assumes it does happen today, but it's a lot worse. Heh heh.

Also today, Leo Tolstoy is 181 years old, and St. Augustine, Florida (the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in North America) is a mere 444 years old.

What Would Jane Do? smk asks this question and everyone awaits your answers on PPMB. The issue is, how would Jane have reacted if Daria had found a boyfriend on her own.

  • Pigskin Caduceus, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 4): Although my incident with the Sudoku book was making me nervous, I pushed the thoughts out of my head to concentrate on Quinn. All of the following week, she was very quiet as of late. She wasn’t raising her hand in class, she wasn’t speaking to her friends at lunch, indeed, she seemed very distracted. But she seemed to be making a lot of sidelong glances at me.

  • Legally Halloween, by Richard Lobinske (Part 2): "What do you need?" "Um, help dyeing my hair." "Could you repeat that? I thought you said something about dyeing your hair."
  • Reusably Complex, by Ajar (Part 1): “I have called this meeting to inform you of some budget changes that are effective immediately,” said Ms. Li to the assembled teachers. “Due to an overrun in security spending after that bomb scare we are cutting hours for all janitorial staff.”
  • The Runaway, by Aloysius (Part 2): “I sobered up faster than they expected,” Daria said. “They left two doors unlocked, because they thought I was still zonked out. I took off, hid, and made my way back to my hometown.”

X Stands for "The Lawndale File"

We need more Artie fics, I was just thinking. Let's see, ten years ago exactly, "The Lawndale File" was released from its cage on MTV. I wrote a bit about this last year. Not sure how many more Daria fanfics or fanfic concepts were spawned from this episode. Anyone have any favorites? (I liked this one.) There was a naughty story based on Artie and the aliens, I recall, but we won't go there. If someone could fix up the appropriate page in DariaWiki, we would all be very grateful.

Going to the Midwest US Dariacon? Check here!

What else is going on... the President of the United States turns 48 today. Many more happies to you.

Ninety-seven years ago today, a man was born in Sweden who had a mostly obscure and unremarkable life until he saw people around him being persecuted, hounded, forced into railroad cars to be taken away to death camps. He then did a very remarkable thing: he began saving people. No one can say how many Hungarian Jews Raoul Wallenberg rescued from certain death, though it is in the tens of thousands at least. Thank you for everything.

Oh! And who could forget Saint Sithney, whose feast day this is? Someone really needs to write a story about this Saints' Day Holiday from Holiday Island High School. He is really and truly the patron saint of mad dogs. That's what I said. Perhaps he is still trying to heal Jake Morgendorffer's emotional trauma from this mad dog.

Moar 2 kumm. Stae toond. Oh! Right, someone asked for a link to that alter ego of Daria as a motorcyclist. Here it is. It was part of a screensaver posted on The N's website once. I used it as "D-Day" Morgendorffer, but it is exactly the same pic. Enjoy.

Watch the Skies!

Sixty-two years ago today, a pilot named Kenneth Arnold spotted strange shapes in the sky near Mt. Rainier. His report of "flying saucers" (as reporters called them) let to the UFO craze in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as to "The Lawndale File" and that nutbar Artie.

One hundred sixty-seven years ago today, Ambrose Bierce was born, a person no doubt familiar to Daria Morgendorffer as he was outrageously sarcastic and cynical in his writings. Bierce was a widely known editorial writer, reporter, and short-story author in his time. He is best known as the creator of the short story, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," later made into a famous short movie shown on Twilight Zone, and a snarky tome called The Devil's Dictionary. Daria would have especially appreciated the latter. He vanished without a trace in Mexico in 1914. Sick, Sad World undoubtedly has some explanation for that.

An amazing full-length portrait of Daria Morgendorffer in her Reaper outfit from "Reaped Out" has been posted by Pinkminx, and in two different but perfect versions, yet. Good Lord! You GO!

PPMB
  • Cold Comfort, by Doggieboy (Part 10): When Daria left the battle scene, she took a few extras with her, but was still able to move along at a hefty jog. Dougherty didn’t even try to follow her, for which she was thankful. I should have three, maybe four hours at the most before he makes his next move against me, she thought and jumped over a small creek. (SFMB)
  • Gimme Skelter, by TAG and Brother Grimace (Part 11): Mackenzie dropped through the hatch into the tractor cab and grabbed the radio mike, startling the driver. He banged his left arm on the side of the hatch hard enough to gasp aloud, but tried to ignore it. “Condor high north, condor high north!” he cried. “Wolf Pack, blackout! Dead stop!” the Old Man immediately responded. “Blackout! Dead stop!” (PPMB)
  • Never Come to Be, by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): Trent Lane lost himself in the sensation of his rough fingers stroking the strings of his Fender dreadnaught acoustic, head bowed as the song drifted through the cemetery, the notes rising and falling as they were carried off on the wind. Jesse Moreno sat beside him, strumming rhythm and singing harmony when called for.
  • Trent Has a Thing for Brunettes, by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): Jane yawned and, not really trying to see through blurry eyes, pulled open the door and stepped into the hall. Her first impression was of disheveled brown hair; her teeth clicked as she ran head-long into what felt like a person in front of Trent's bedroom door and the dull thud of shoes hitting the worn carpet. She looked up with a wince, lips already parted to apologize to her usually recumbent sibling—and froze. Angry tremors swept her lean body as her eyes blazed like blue suns.
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Angst Lord Time-Trials Redux), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): Over a hundred cameras recorded the scene as, in front of a stunned crowd, Angela Li came through the front doors of Lawndale High School Wearing a jet-black babydoll with matching garters and a matching silk scarf, Angela smiled at the crowd as the girls of the Cheerleading Squad and Fashion Club (dressed in the finest that Victoria's Secret could offer) paraded out from the doors behind her. As everyone watched, stunned into silence, Angela began to sing.
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Favorite Aunt Meets Amiga), by Betting on Delusions (COMPLETE? Part 1?): Jane sighed audibly and pulled her legs to her chest, making herself as small as possible. She had been waging an internal war ever since her subconscious pulled the rug out from under her the prior afternoon. "I definitely was not expecting this," Jane muttered into her knees.

  • Puppeteering, by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Come in." I entered what appeared to be a little-used room in a vacant Hollywood movie set. It was actually a vacant Toronto movie set, but if Toronto can replace New York on television, its sets can replace Hollywood ones. The man sitting at the desk wore khaki. He looked half like Jeff Probst of Survivor and half used-car salesman. He smiled, as if he were completely and absolutely satisfied with himself. [I never metafiction I didn't like!]

And a little birthday present to all....

What if "The Lawndale File" had been right after all? What if aliens really were on Earth, walking among us? What if they even went to school with our kids? (Well, if we lived in Lawndale, that is.)

The answers to all these questions may be found in fanfiction set in a new shared multiverse: LOVESTRUCK ATOMIC TEENAGE INVADERS FROM MARS, brought to you courtesy of this blog plus valuable assistance from Brother Grimace. Behold, and start writing!

LATE NEWS: Page 2 is up! See the link at the bottom of the LATIFA page!

(Remember to click on the pictures. They talk.)

(Also, the new multiverse may be called LATIFA, though you have to use the A in Mars instead of the M, but I think that's allowed.)

(If nothing else, I hope the pages are fun to read and listen to!)

The Truth Is Way, Way Out There!

Nine years ago today, "The Lawndale File" came to MTV. The episode didn't go anywhere and had some unlikely subplots, but it is worth a thought on ways that the two FBI-ish agents (pseudo-Scully & Mulder) could be worked into fanfics. Who were they, really? Were they villains, foes, threats, dangers to society, or (worst of all) from the IRS? How else could they have been used? (I remember using them in "Scarlett," but I don't recall anyone else using them.)

"The Lawndale File" did spawn at least two fanfics, both with strong SF overtones: "It's That Guy" and "And I on the Opposite Shore Will Be."

This date was also important in two fanfics. First: "A Killer in Lawndale." (The story has some unintentionally amusing spots.)

Second: "The Alternate History Teacher." Today is the date of the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, which turned the Vietnam War from a small war into a huge one, despite the fact that the incident was a big mistake. Does this sound familiar?

Speaking of important days, today is one of those multitudinous saint's days seen in "Depth Takes a Holiday": The Feast Day of Saint Sithney, the patron saint of mad dogs! (Not Jake's dad, I think. Or maybe he was.) No, seriously, Saint Sithney is the actual patron saint of mad dogs. I have no idea how that got started. This is a character who really needs to appear in Daria fanfic!

If you are a Canadian, Holiday Island High wishes you a happy Civic Holiday. Wonder what that kid looks like. Sorta Canadian, I imagine.

Finally . . . Happy Birthday, Barack Obama! Who do you think the Daria cast will vote for this year?

PPMB
  • A Simple Makeup Kit, by Richard Lobinske (Part 3): Ninth-grader Daria asks a boy out to the theater. Will there be disaster and heartbreak, or merely the end of the world? Time will tell.
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part II), by jtranser (continued): "The Ring has its own mission, which is to create the Universe of the Sixth Sun." [Wait until you find out HOW that will be done, though!]
  • Turnabout Confusion Part II: All The King's Horses, by Dennis (continued): "Work with?" Scarlett asked, clearly intrigued despite herself. "Why would I want to work with you on anything?" "Not even on running the school?" Sandi asked, raising an eyebrow.

Jodie and Mack and That Personality Thing

We return to the Myers Briggs personality theory, taking a look at the most perfect student in Lawndale High, and the (unintentionally) most perfect male student there, too. As before, I will wing it and guess at the personality types of these two extraordinary teenagers, then offer a lot of dopey armchair psychology as to what it all means. (I have a degree in armchair psychology, so I'm a professional. Don't try this at home.)

Astronomers find it easier to measure the mass of double stars than single stars, because of the easy-to-see gravitational effects that each star in a double has on the other. A star all by itself doesn't react against anything, making the mass-determination process problematic. The same is true about personality guesswork. Daria and Jane are easier to peg when considered as a dyad rather than separately. The same is true for Jodie and Mack.

Whereas Daria and Jane are both introverts, Jodie and Mack both appear to be extroverts, which to me is rather unusual as it is the extrovert/introvert combination you usually see in mating (at least as the MBTI describes it). Jodie especially is way out there, with all her service-oriented extracurricular activities and leadership positions. Mack for his part is the captain of the football team; it certainly isn't unknown for an introvert to be a leader (lots of them are), but Mack never shows any sign of the complicated interior life that most introverts have. What he says and does is what he really is, which is the hallmark of an extrovert. Mack leads a fairly low-pressure life, though he is driven to distraction by his girlfriend. (See his New Year's resolutions regarding Jodie in The Daria Database.)

Jodie, however, does have a significant interior life. See her Lawndale Lowdown editorial in The Daria Diaries, "Living Up to Your Potential." On the surface she is writing about exactly what the title says, but she's also revealing her highly stressful inner world, driven to overachieve by her father and mother. (The pressure from her father especially is often mentioned in the TV series.) The girl who once wanted to be a ballerina likely started off as an introvert, but was forced to be more social by her parents. In my humble opinion, Jodie is a perfectionist INTJ who was forced to become, in part, an ENTJ.

Even as a high-school student, Jodie is formidable. Brilliant and possessing extraordinary leadership abilities, she has connections leading all the way into Washington, D.C., thanks to her summer work in a Congressman's office (IIFY?). Attracted to business, she wants to start her own company ("Partner's Complaint") and easily manipulates older adults into assisting her by force of her personality and charisma, plus some judicious name-dropping. She adapts quickly to changing situations, has an instinctive grasp of politics (power and personal), and can make the hard calls. And, it must be added, she has one of the most cynical attitudes toward The System of anyone in the series, except possibly Daria herself.

And that opens up a very interesting avenue of inquiry, about which more later.

Son of Alien Nation (Part 3)

Yes, it is time again for a few more alien lifeforms that you can find in canon in Daria. The yellow-green bipedal insectoid thing that walks in front of the Morgendorffers at the UFO convention in "Esteemsters" could be a human in costume, or it could be an extraterrestrial using the simplest possible disguise: pretend to be a costumed human at a UFO convention.

"The Lawndale File" offers the intriguing idea that Daria and Jane are themselves alien sex goddesses, but Richard Lobinske beat everyone to the punch with "It's That Guy."

Finally, Artie is himself probably knowledgeable about a vast number of aliens, having been kidnapped so often by them. See his cameo on the MTV website, for instance. For all we know, he is an alien.

Random Fanfic Idea #4

Suppose that in "The Lawndale File," the alien expert on Sick, Sad World was right: there are aliens walking among us (or, rather, among the people of Lawndale). Who is (or are) the aliens, and what do they want?

A variation on this idea was used in "And I on the Opposite Shore Will Be," and Richard Lobinske used another variation on it in "It's That Guy."
