Boom.

Sixty-five years ago today, the first Bikini Atoll test took place when the first of many atomic bombs was detonated there. That may be why Andrea, despite wearing a bikini, looks so unhappy. For all we know, that beach ball is itself a bomb. Duck and cover, folks!

Today is also Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day, so celebrate with a pint of Bro and QB's finest Firstdown Fudge. Is that creative enough for you? If not, come up with some flavors of your own--football-related or otherwise--in the comments.

Telstar Tales

A very curious and historic day this is, indeed. Just 48 years ago today, a satellite was launched into Earth orbit from Florida. Its name was Telstar. It was not only the first communications satellite to transmit live television and high-speed data (telephone calls and faxes) across the Atlantic, it also the first privately sponsored space launch.

It created a great stir, uniting in one stroke the people of North America and Europe through their TV sets. Telstar I became the forerunner of a great family of communications spacecraft still used today. (We're up to Telstar 18.)

So, up went Telstar, and then... people went a little crazy. You have to understand how amazing Telstar was to the world of 1962. It was SO amazing, a mad blizzard of completely unrelated things were all named Telstar in honor of the original one, because everyone thought it was such a cool thing. This naming trend has continued to this very day. Things are STILL being named Telstar because of that one long-ago satellite.

Did you know that Telstar revolutionized soccer? (That's football to everyone but the USA.) This happened when Adidas came out with a soccer ball painted to look like the satellite. It is now the standard soccer ball the world over. No kidding.

And there's more. Telstar also happens to be the name of...
I wonder if anyone has named a child Telstar. (Oh, the horror.) The original Telstar satellite was destroyed by radiation from hydrogen bombs set off in outer space, which sounds like I am making that up, but I am not. Burned the satellite's power right out. Very sad. It's still up there, the original Telstar, still orbiting the Earth even in electronic death. Not likely it will ever be forgotten, at least not by anyone who plays soccer.

Today is also the 154th birthday anniversary of super-genius Nikola Tesla, whose name sounds like Telstar but is unrelated. Tesla is mentioned in only three Daria fanfics. A pity. Telstar has never been mentioned at all. (The above was corrected, thanks to readers more alert than I am.)

Time for something completely different. Or not.

  • Daria/Dorian, by LadieT (continued): As school ended, Jodie and Mack approached Dorian. Dorian was staring at the tiny slip of paper from Mrs. Bennett's class. Jodie shook her head as she pointed at the Dorian's hand. "Congratulations on getting the one project that none of us wanted." Jodie smirked. "Gee thanks. Good luck with your projects. Mack, twenty bucks says Kevin actually ends up buying a car." Dorian replied. "I would say you're on but we are talking about Kevin." (FF.net)
  • Finn Morgendorffer 52: With Extra Bitters, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 5): “Look, I didn’t want to snap at you. I’m just not used to having other people criticize my writing. Or other people for that matter. Ask my first boyfriend what happened when I showed him a story I wrote. And, well...I read yours. The one you said wasn’t any good because you divided your time like you did. Well...I liked it. It was good, better than mine.” Daria admitted, and every word was painful. “So what’s the problem with that? Course mine’s gonna be better, I’d been writing these things my whole life, and I’m older than you. It’s as obvious as don’t run with scissors or don’t put your dangly bits in the mouth of an alligator.” “I wrote my whole life too!” Daria returned, ignoring his randomness. “That was me, every day I wrote. And I watched my writing get better and better, and the off-chance that I shared it with someone, they loved it. Not that my English teacher would ever say something that could damage my poor self-esteem, but it was enjoyed, and thought to be great.” “So I come along and ruin everything by, what, being good at the same thing? Jeez, ego trip much?”
  • First Born, by RLobinske (Part 4): Seated at the dining table while Derek prepared breakfast, Karen said, "Jane Lane. What are you doing up so early?" Hair as rumpled as her t-shirt and shorts, Jane said, "Having to get to school at 7:30 has made me a morning person, dammit." "But not a very cheerful one," Karen said. "You can bet your sweet ass I'm not cheerful about it. Coffee?"
  • NEW! Full Metal Pragmatist, by Dark Kuno (COMPLETE!): "OK, this might hurt a bit..." came Trent's voice as it roused her from her nostalgia. "Don't sugar coat it for the girl, boy," grumped Bernice Lane-Rockbell from her place near the girl's lower body. "OK, it will hurt a bit..." he continued. "Hell with a bit, it's going to hurt a lot," stated Trent's aunt and guardian as her nephew carefully and expertly slid the ends of the wiring into the exposed flesh around the girl's clavicle. (FF.net)
  • The Graduation Gift, by LadieT (COMPLETE!): I glanced at the clock. It was six thirty. I showered and got dressed. I stared at myself in the mirror. My short black bangs had been replaced by longer ones that curved around the contour of my face. I covered my lips in their signature red. My face appeared drawn and tired. My last set of finals had been brutal. I looked down at my hands. My fingers were calloused from years of artistic abuse. Today though will prove it was all worth it. I left the bathroom and headed back to my room. (FF.net)
  • Regifted, by Ajar (Part 8): Quinn took a deep sip from her diet soda like a stereotypical cop with a cup of coffee in a particularly difficult interrogation. “Okay, let's go through this again. What skirt do you want to go with your top?” “What's wrong with jeans?” Daria asked. Quinn sighed dramatically. “I told you already. My jeans don't fit you. You have an apple body-type, everyone will see your belly. A couple weeks away from Pizza King and we'll discuss that.” “Quinn, this is really just a one-time thing.” “I can help you out. But ultimately you have to figure things out for yourself. Me doing this all for you isn't going to help you in the real world.” “I don't even watch The Real World.”
  • NEWER! The Theme from Mack Dynamite, by Dark Kuno (COMPLETE!): [Songfic lyrics for everyone to sing!]
  • Three-Edged Sword, by NightGoblyn (Part 3): "Jane... I... there's something I need to tell you." Jane leaned over, poking just enough of her head around the large canvas that Tom could see her from the nose up. She gestured with her paint brush for him to speak. "It's... it's important." Tom waited a moment, and when Jane didn't respond his brow creased with irritation. "Could you come out from behind the damn painting a minute?" Jane sighed, and Tom heard the clatter of her palette on the table followed by the gentle splash of her brush being dropped into a jar of water. She walked around the side of the easel and stretched, moaning slightly as her neck and shoulders popped. Tom's eyes flicked away, trying not to notice that Jane's figure had returned to what it was before her pregnancy, only now enhanced with a gentle swell of hips and a prouder set of breasts. Doing a good job not noticing, Tommy Boy, he thought sourly. (Continues from this once-unnamed story)
  • Unnamed ficlet (Did you ever notice...), by Chris Tucker (COMPLETE!): [Too short to sample!] (Daria/The Matrix)
  • NEW! Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Crossover the Pond), by rglovejoy (COMPLETE!): The mob of peasants surged forward and threw the bespectacled girl at Bedevere's feet. "A witch, a witch! We've got a witch! Might we burn her?" "How do you KNOW she is a witch?" Bedevere demanded, his right eye periodically popping out of its socket. A particularly dim peasant, with outsized shoulders, spoke up. "She looks like one, y'know?" "I'm not a witch," the girl said flatly. "But you are DRESSED as one," Bedevere told her. "These morons dressed me up like this," the girl countered. "This isn't my nose. It's a false one." "Well, we did do the nose," the peasant conceded. (Daria/Monty Python's Flying Circus)
  • NEW! Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Crossover the Pond), by Staticblast (COMPLETE!): "Good morning, Minister." "Gfd mfrng... Sorry, good morning. Scone's a bit dry." "Yes, well, I'd like to obtain a Government grant to help me develop my silly walk." "I see. May I see your silly walk?" (Daria/Monty Python's Flying Circus)
  • Unnamed story (More Crossovers Not Yet Crossed Over), by Minx (COMPLETE!): Sandi stood in front of her locker discussing the new school dress code, "...And under no circumstances shall either of you wear neon. It wasn't cute last year and I'll make damned sure it won’t be this year. I don't care what Valentino says," she turned to her trench-(wo)men for confirmation but was cut off but the chirp of three message cell phone tones sounding out simultaneously. Stacy was the first to check, she flipped open her phone and looked at Sandi gravely. "What, what is it?" Sandi barked. Stacy shook her head timidly and muttered a few words that resembled, 'Nothing, don't worry,' before flipping the phone shut and shoving it into the depths of her bag. "Nothing my ass," Sandi retorted as she drew her own cell-phone from her locker and checked her messages.

  • The Vision of the Burning Cities, by jtranser (continued): "Daria, I called because I wanted to find out if you could do something to help Stacy. She's been having these horrible nightmares about high school." "Quinn, there's nothing wrong about that. Almost everyone has horrible nightmares about high school. Even you. Remember that dream you had where you were surrounded by fanboys and nerds and couldn't get away from them, as they tried to get your autograph, cut off pieces of clothing and cop feels?" "Yeah, I sure do. And who would've thought it would turn into reality after I went to work in television..."
  • NEWER! The White Fox, by Lord Akiyama (prologue): The figure went over the words again to make sure what he was reading was the material he was looking for. He looked up and around to make sure the teenage girl was still asleep in her bed. Satisfied, the figure silently slipped out of the padded bedroom through the window, careful to not make a sound as he went. He quietly moved, jumping from one rooftop to the next. Much of the moon was covered by clouds on this night, offering him more darkness to cover him from unsuspecting eyes that might get lucky and catch him about. The figure did not stop until thirty minutes later when he reached his destination.

It's Find My H-Bomb Day!

That wacky U.S. Air Force did it again! Know what happened 52 years ago today? The USAF lost a 3.8-megaton H-bomb in the river near Savannah, Georgia! (The U.S. state called Georgia, not the other one.) I don't recommend you go look for it, though. Alaska looks pretty good, maybe we should move there. Now.

Mr. DeMartino has some relevant thoughts about atomic weapons and international politics. Hmmm.

NEWZ FLASH!!

Quiverwing has posted the winners of the 2009 Daria Fanworks Awards: Written Works & Visual Works! Anyone who got a story or artwork nominated should stand tall! Congratulations to everyone who contributed. 2009 was a darn good year, and 2010 looks to be even better.

In the art folder in the Alter Egos That Should Have Been thread, Pinhead has produced a lost masterwork by Vincent van Gogh: "Daria and Jane against a pink background." And there was much rejoicing. AND he's also discovered a picture by Edgar Degas: "Rehearsal." Excellent! AND Henri Matisse's extraordinary "Rage." AND Wassily Kandinsky: "The main street."

FF.net
  • NEW! See Yourself, by a440 (COMPLETE!): Linda Griffin felt that if anything happened to her, she would need a successor, someone to pick up where she left off so that what happened to her wouldn't happen to her then future children, and that was her daughter, Sandi.
PPMB
  • NEW! Cluck Like a Chicken, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): Timothy O'Neil opened his eyes, smiled, and leaned back in his chair with a casual ease that visibly unnerved everyone in the crowded LHS auditorium as he let his eyes wander across the area. "Yeah, y'all ain't trying to punk a brother like a bitch all up in this house," he said, the accent he had perfectly matching someone from the South Side of Chicago.
  • NEW! Daria Is Raven's Apprentice, by Project Pegasus (continued): "Hey, I dressed up like an Asian prostitute to win this award! What did you do?!"
  • NEW! Falling into College 72: Valley of Love and Delight, by RLobinske (Part 6): Michael put his arm around Daria. "I think we're going to make it." "Providing the wedding doesn't kill us." "Nah, it'll make us stronger."
  • Finn Morgendorffer 30: Parental Discretion Advised, by HolyGrail2007 (COMPLETE!): Daria shrugged. Why, exactly, was Tom calling her? He was a nice enough guy, to be sure, but he was Jane’s boyfriend and Finn’s friend. She wasn’t high on his priority list. And, after that embarrassing incident last week, Daria had been trying to avoid him. Every time she thought of Tom, she flashed back to that incident where she walked in on him stark naked. It was inappropriate to think of her best friend’s boyfriend naked, at the very least. But it was too shocking to ignore.
  • NEW! Finn Morgendorffer 31: The Artist, The Boyfriend, The Bitch, and Her Brother, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 1): Finn maneuvered his way towards Jane’s room, and saw the door was open somewhat. Finn knocked on it, but the force of his fist pushed the door open further. Jane was inside, with Tom. The two were making out. At the sound of Finn’s knock, Jane broke it off. “Yikes!”
  • NEW! Kamen Rider D, by Silver (Part 2): "This... this is getting old," Daria muttered to herself, managing to get upright again. She charged and attempted to do to the wolf thing the only thing she could think of doing. She kicked it in the crotch.
  • NEW! Legion of Lawndale Heroes Mini: Areté, by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Ribbon envy is so... petty," said Kyle Armalin. "And I already have a Legion of Merit. Tell you what, I'll lend you some of my decorations if you don't tell anyone you borrowed them."
  • NEW! Outting the Ins, by Vlora (COMPLETE! and with ART!): Daria surveyed the damage in the mirror Jane had brought up to her room; she was wearing a worn, red shirt, a jersey and everything else Jane had ever been seen wearing. Her hair, the worst off, had been-well-hacked off by Jane.

A Mischevious Night

Daria's Sick, Sad Life Planner memorializes this day's "War of the Worlds" special broadcast only 71 years ago by Orson Welles and company, which convinced many gullible people that Martians had invaded Grover's Mill, New Jersey. While most listeners were thankful that the "New Jersey problem" was finally being taken care of, they were later horrified and depressed to discover that New Jersey had not been destroyed by aliens.

By the way, did you ever notice the similarity between Grover's Mill and Grove Hills? Coincidence? I think not. Fanfiction, people! We need more fanfiction on this issue!

The younger and more evil sister of Halloween, per one source, is Devil's Night, whose night is also tonight. (Her good side is known as Mischief Night.) Definitely not a "holiday" to encourage. Anyone know of other "non-holidays" that would make good truants at Holiday Island High? Good fodder for future fanfics.

Tsar Bomba, the biggest H-bomb in all history, was detonated this day 48 years ago, which pretty much killed everyone's enthusiasm for having a real atomic war. Except maybe for Mr. DeMartino. Cool video, though. Any invading aliens will receive a little surprise there, won't they?

Pinhead is creating Daria images again. A reflective and somewhat unclothed Daria graces the web at PPMB.

Two new Iron Chefs by Greystar are online at PPMB and attracting attention. See Iron Chef: Lawndale High School Basement and Iron Chef: 2012.

Blogging woes: It seems I've created too many Labels for this blog and have to cut back to 2,000. I'm trimming the stupid ones (most of mine) and should have the problem back under control soon. You won't notice the difference.

Halloween Stuff: Included with this post are some cool costume suggestions from Daria and Beavis and Butt-head for those of you going trick-or-treating. See what works best for you.

What Could Have Been

Forty-seven years ago today in an alternate Dariaverse, a dreadful thing happened. Good thing it wasn't our universe, but it could have been.

The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral occurred 128 years ago this date, leading to the Okay to Cry Corral in Is It Fall Yet? and a Daria fanfic featuring Doc Holliday.

  • Apocalyptic Daria: Scarlett's Tale, by Doggieboy (Part 12): The door to the stairway opened and three oriental men walked in the room. All three were dressed in uniforms of what was once called the North Vietnamese Army, and each carried an assault rifle, either of Russian or Chinese design.
  • Don't Leave Anything to Chance, by Coonassblondie (Part 2): "I don't want to think about you screwing my friend. It's just wrong." "You shouldn't be concerned with who I'm screwing at all. That includes your friends!"
  • John Lane 43: We're on a Mission, by Richard Lobinske (part 3): "You've got this all planned out. Quinn mentioned that Daria was spending the day at a spa with her and their mother. How did you pull that off?" "Manipulation, bribery and groveling. Oh, and I may need to score the deed to a small country."

Ice Cream & Randomess

Yes, the new fiscal year has finally begun. How are you planning to celebrate it? Wait a second! When did they change the fiscal year to October 1? YOU BASTARDS!

Okay, what the hell else is going on. Today is Canada Day, July Morning (only in Bulgaria), the 101st birthday of the S.O.S. emergency signal, the 63rd anniversary of test shot Able at Bikini Atoll that gave us the bikini swimsuit (seriously), the 66th anniversary of the day Tokyo stopped being a city.... oh!

Today is Creative Ice Cream Flavor Day! Instead of that fiscal year crap, write down in Comments your suggestion for a new ice-cream flavor based on something in Daria!

DrNoGood09 offers a unique Iron Chef: The Fashion Club's Very Unusual Love Problem!

More crossover ideas for your amusement.... and here's the fanfic.

  • Commitment Issues, by Fringeperson (Part 4): The next Monday, after Jane had left for school with Daria, Trent hauled himself out of bed. He’d set the alarm on his clock for once, and had been aware of the world for a while now. Shuffling to the hall phone, where all the numbers were kept, Trent looked up the “in case of Daria-type emergencies” numbers, and called Helen Morgendorffer’s work.
  • Daria: The College Years, by Farren O'Blivion (Part 11): This day has gone rather well. It can't possibly last, Daria mused. She and the others were having a surprisingly good time at Pizza King, despite Nick and Max's constant bickering. Quinn, be still her heart, had actually ordered a black olive and mushroom pizza, complete with artery-clogging cheese. Daria and Jane had looked stunned but, in her defense, Quinn said only, “Curves are in!”
PPMB
  • Gimme Skelter, by TAG and Brother Grimace (Part 13): Rather than say that the bridge wasn’t there, it would be more precise to say that about ninety percent of the I-40 bridge was not only there but reasonably intact. The problem revealed in the tanker’s cracked headlights was that the easternmost hundred-foot span of the bridge had collapsed, the part closest to where Mackenzie and Freeman sat in stunned silence. The remainder of the bridge from the first pier westward was still standing. [New thread begins here.]
  • John Lane 41: Friends and Rediscovery, by Richard Lobinske (Part 2): John looked over from his easel and said, "What did Trent just get talking into?" Helen said, "He's going along with you, Daria and Quinn to Camp Grizzly. Not that you need supervision or anything, but just in case anything happens."
  • Lawndale’s Finest Detective Stories 2: Daughters of the Demon, by NightGoblyn (Part 1): Elsie glanced up from her great-great-grandfather’s journal when she heard the key rattle in the lock. She had enough time to conceal the antique volume among her school books before the door opened, and then turned towards her visitor with a puzzled smile. [Continued here: “Grovel,” Elsie said, smirking at her brother. “Beg for my forgiveness.”]
  • Love is a Series of Burning Sensations, by Undefinedlust (Part 3): Daria sat quietly in Jane's room, trying to process the changes she saw in her best friend. Over the weekend, Jane seemed to have undergone a radical transformation. She looked different, but more importantly she just seemed like a very different person. Her new look, while a shocking departure was not as jarring as the hard edge Jane had seemed to acquire almost overnight.
  • Regifted, by Ajar (Part 6): “Hello, Stacy,” Graham said. “You know you shouldn't be calling me on my cell,” Stacy said. “I don't know what would happen if Sandi found out about this.”
  • Richly Dressed, by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): The door swung inward with a mournful creak and silhouetted in the scant light filtering in from the hall was a gruesome sight. Tom Sloane stood there, face blank, entirely nude. The whole of his body was swathed in nightmarish gashes, each pulled together with large, clumsy stitches.
  • Tales of the Ringbearers: Sometimes, You Have to Wait, by Doggieboy (COMPLETE!): David MacClean lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling. It had been several days since he had been sealed inside the room and he had no idea when, or even if, he was going to be allowed out. It wasn’t a bad room, however. He had plenty to eat, a television to watch, and even books to read, if he so desired. The bathroom, in fact, was luxurious when compared to the one from his Lawndale apartment. Even a prison made out of gold is still a prison, he thought.
  • Tales of the Ringbearers: [unnamed], by Ranger Thorne (COMPLETE!): “Ah, the Ringbearers,” said the zack's master. “I was wondering when your were going to show up.” “Is there a Sith newsletter we don’t know about?” Jane asked.
  • A Taste of Hell, by Doggieboy (COMPLETE!): The only lights in Lawndale came from the fires that consumed more than half of the city. Todd Ianuzzi leaned on a nearby red-painted fencepost and looked at the dark silhouette of the woman who had killed his two partners and shot him in the leg. He couldn’t see her face at all, except for her glasses, and all they did was reflect the flames as they licked at the sky.
  • Unnamed limerick (The Daria Fan Fiction Classification Test), by Magnuskrauss (COMPLETE!): [It's a limerick. If I repeat any of it, that will be the whole limerick.]
  • Unnamed Story [That was low, really low], by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): Quinn had a headache. She slowly opened one eye, and then immediately closed it against the harsh, blurry light. Keeping her eyes closed, she tried to sit up and was shocked when her limbs refused to obey her commands. Her ankles were tied together, and her wrists were tightly lashed together behind her back. Slowly, she cracked one eye open again.
  • Unnamed story (Crossovers Not Yet Crossed Over), by Pinkminx (COMPLETE!): A lone blowfly danced hypnotically around the back alley of McGrundy's. A wonderfully putrid smell had summoned it there, and it had yet to discover the source. Its attention was drawn to the the old screen door as it screeched open.
  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fanfic Should Have: TGIF), by Greystar (COMPLETE!): "Girls, I just want you to know your mother and I realize it's not easy moving to a whole new town—especially for you, Tom, right?"
  • Unnamed story (Second Coming of the New Ideas Thread), by Trscroggs (Part 2, continued from here): “Agent D reporting in. How’s the signal home base?” “Spotty Agent D, but readable. What are conditions on the surface really like?”
  • Wrylight, by Pinkminx (Parts 1 to 6): "I've been known to get my wits out on occasion," Daria deadpanned. A Mona Lisa smile ghosted her lips. "Oh, Daria, you shouldn't do that." Brittany leaned across the table and put her hand over Daria's. "it's only permissible when you’re really wasted or when the Girls Gone Wild cameraman is around." [Okay, that line was pure WIN.] (FF.net)

Fallout Is Forever

Forty-six years ago, in an alternate universe, things went terribly wrong. Good thing it wasn't our universe.

On the good side, 35 years ago today smallpox is considered to have been destroyed forever, so at least we did something right as a species.

This is the day when the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral occurred, leading of course to the Okay to Cry Corral in Is It Fall Yet? and a fanfic about Doc Holliday.

More soon.

Science Runs Amok

Three different science-based events occurred today in history, each of which had a marked effect on one of my science-fiction Daria fanfics. Weird how that came about.

Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 began to impact Jupiter on this day 14 years ago. This led to the events detailed in "And I on the Opposite Shore Will Be."

Apollo 11 began its journey moonward this very day 39 years ago. "Every Hour Saved from That Eternal Silence" came about as a result.

And atomic fire lit the earth for the first time ever 63 years ago today, with the Trinity nuclear test in New Mexico. This became the de facto birthday of the Atomic Age, and thus the "anti-holiday" of the Holiday Island High character Trinity, from "A Hard Days' Night."

More to come as the day rolls along. Happy Birthday, Trinity!

Thus Bulletin Just In. . . .

Oh, I also meant to point out that today marks the 62nd birthday of the bikini, which was named for an American atomic bomb test.

Just thought you should know that.
