Girls Just Wanna Be Retro

The Fashion Club is taking some fashion tips from a few decades ago in honor of Cyndi Lauper's 65th birthday! Of course, if they actually hear "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" then I'd suggest that they run, because it means Metalmouth is sure to be nearby.

Today is also Carson Daly's birthday, and he's best known within Daria canon as the voice of David Sorenson from Is It Fall Yet? David was notable in being among the very few guys to resist Quinn's charms, as well as to actually earn Daria's respect.

Fanfic Update!
  • Cuckoos On Infinite Earths, by Smijey (part 18): "At the Hoover Dam, Janice took her first opportunity to split off from the tour group, dragging Beavis behind her, and marched into the nearest bathroom. 'Heh-heh, hey!' he protested as she locked the door."

  • Fading Memories (Quinn, Season 4), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn Morgendorffer is running scared in a large cave with lakes of molten lava all around her. The screams of unbearable pain can be heard all around her. Her path is suddenly blocked by a red skinned monster with a pointed tail, bat wings and huge horns." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Fates Entwined, by Deep Metal (part 18): "'Wow, this place looks... Orwellian,' Tom's eyes widened. He had just pulled up in front of Highland High and to the surprise of all three Lawndale residents, Highland had been transformed from a seemingly impoverished small town school to a more modern institution."

  • Jodie the rebel (Jodie Landon - Rebel), by Wassersauefer (part 1): "It wasn't like she had planned it all along. Unlike what she usually did, this time Jodie simply acted. Normaly she would take long hours of thinking every decision through, making lists with pros and cons and finally settling on a course of action, always going for the best outcome possible and the most effective way of reaching it."

  • Second Chance for Love, by David Falkayn (part 17): "'This could get to be a habit, szereto.' Elizaveta smiled as she caressed the cheek of the girl lying in bed next to her. 'Then it's a habit I don't ever want to give up.' Angie smiled back as she gave her girlfriend a kiss."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria and Jodie are best friends), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "'God, I hope that's not the booster society again,' Quinn said, disgusted. Wow, you show up the first day and they're all over you."

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries #2), by Roentgen (part 129): "It was going to be an early breakfast for Charles Ruttheimer. He was on an early flight to Massachusetts, to complete his final act as Deputy Leader for the Legion."

Yes, It Is College Yet!

Trent (or perhaps his grandfather) is on his way to college thanks to the G.I. Bill, which was signed on this day in 1944. Trent may not have to worry about paying tuition, but he'll still need to stay awake in class. I doubt he's going to have much success.

Today we also wish a happy birthday to both Carson Daly, born in 1973, and Cyndi Lauper, born in 1953. Carson Daly voiced the character David in Is It Fall Yet? and one of Cyndi Lauper's best-known songs, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," is probably Metal Mouth's least favorite.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Coffee Shop, by Kuriamo22 (COMPLETE!): "A snow fell lightly outside as Daria sat in alone at a table for two at a nice little quiet coffee shop in downtown Boston."

  • Daria: College Pains The Sophomore Year, by James the Lesser (part 9): "Daria sits in her Women's Lib class bored. The professor seemed to have good intentions but was reminding Daria more and more of Ms. Barch every day."

  • Exorcise in Futility, by Kristen Bealer (part 2): "Panting from the exertion, Anthony looked at Timothy. 'You know something?' he asked, now calm. 'I think there might be something to that new age crap after all.'"

  • General Semantics, Private Angst, by gwrtheyrn (part 48): "At the end of her teleconference with President Landon, Daria 3 found that she had agreed to participate in the operation to pursue General Audhoyo's anticipated escape attempt, in an auxiliary capacity; -- auxiliary, because no one could be sure just how useful her odd talents would prove, in a paramilitary operation."

  • A Griffin Story: Conception And Homecomings, by Meester_Lee (part 1): "Lucius Malfoy apparated into the foyer. It was good to be home again after several days in that beastly city."

  • Little Talks, by The High-Fiving Chimp (COMPLETE!): "Daria couldn't get the dark and distressing image out of her head. Seeing her friend sink into her grave like that. And there was nothing she could do to prevent it."

  • A Time For Us, by aeverett (part 4): "Helen Morgendorffer. Ever since that Saturday afternoon over pizza with Jane, Daria had become increasingly preoccupied with dredging up memories of her family, particularly memories of Helen."

College, Carson, Cyndi, and Chocolate!

On this day in 1944, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the G.I. Bill into law. It offered support to returning soldiers who wished to pursue their education, among other things. Unfortunately for Trent, I don't think any colleges--then or now--included "Sleeping with a Guitar in Your Hands 101" as a course.

Happy birthday to both Carson Daly, born in 1973, and Cyndi Lauper, born in 1953. Carson Daly voiced the character David Sorenson in the movie Is It Fall Yet?, in which he attempted the impossible--teaching anything to Sandi, Stacy, and (gulp) Tiffany. Kudos to you for trying, you brave soul!

Cyndi Lauper and Metalmouth would both like to remind you all that Girls Just Want To Have Fun! Don't worry about that noise outside the car. It was probably just raccoons or something. Feel free to let your guard down, okay?

Most importantly of all (in my opinion, anyway), today is National Chocolate Eclair Day! A chocolate eclair was featured in The Angst Guy's Feeding Frenzy, although for some reason the characters in the fanfic had their minds on...other things.

Fanfic Update!
  • Chance Encounters (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: It's Friday!!), by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): "'7-A,' Nick confirmed. 'You know what to do.' 'Professional,' Trent muttered in distaste as he jogged toward the building. 'That's my boy,' Nick crooned, then the line went dead."

  • Chuckovers (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: It's Friday!!), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): Too many great one-liners to quote just one. Go read them yourself!

  • Crossing Stars, by Silver: "Mack shook his head. 'Doesn't seem worth it to me.' 'So, McKinley giving us a brand new drive system on top of twelve million IEC Trust doesn't appeal to you?' Daria asked flatly. Mack paused, considering this for a long, long moment. 'Objection withdrawn, fearless leader.'"

  • The Happy-Go-Lucky Fic (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: It's Friday!!), by GlitterShrooms (COMPLETE!): "'Daria," said Dr. Johnson, "You can come in now.' 'Thanks for seeing me today Doctor. How is everything?' 'Well, we've finished all your tests. Still, I have some good news and some bad news.'"

  • Is It Ours Yet?, by RX-87 (part 1): "'Why are we at a beach party?' Daria asked the same way a suspected terrorist might say 'Why are we in Cuba?' 'Do the words free food mean nothing to you?' Jane smirked. 'Besides... this might be our last chance to see everybody. You can't tell me you're not gonna miss any of them at all?' 'You're telling me you are?' Daria said sceptically as she took a bite of the dog."

  • It's Eureka, Daria: A Walk in the Woods, by RLobinske (COMPLETE!): "Following the new path, Daria said, 'Since my family moved to Eureka, I've been turned into a living light bulb, I've had to save half the town from the malfunction of a nuclear rocket bunker and now I'm tracking down a lost robot. When does Global Dynamics start giving me hazardous duty pay?' 'Trust me,' Dawn said. 'You haven't seen anything close to what GD considers hazardous duty.' 'Yeah, we just take our lives in our hands when we wake up every morning,' Daria said. 'That's not hazardous duty around in Eureka, that's just life.'" (Part 4)

  • Life After Highland Ch. 1: Rush This!, by LadieT (COMPLETE!): "When Daria was finished, she looked like she was going to start crying again. Daria excused herself and headed for the bathroom. As she was wiping her face off, she saw Brittany walk in and stand behind her. When Daria turned around, Brittany wrapped her in a warm embrace."

  • Mad Dog's Legacy Chapter 9: Hard Time, by Hyrin (COMPLETE!): "'Damn elephant in the car,' Daria muttered, then asked, 'Mack, why are you wanting to go out with me?' 'What?' 'You heard me,' she said, looking at him." (Epilogue)

  • Morgue and Morgendorffer (Crossovers Still Crossing Over), by gwrtheyrn (part 1): "The humid, baking heat in the street was terrible: the airlessness all about her, and that special Maryland stench, so familiar to all who are unable to distance themselves from the Chesapeake in summer--all worked painfully upon the young woman's already overwrought nerves. From time to time, she would mutter something, from the habit of talking to herself, to which she had just confessed."

  • Not So Different 49: All Is Grist That Comes To The Mill, by J-D (COMPLETE!): "'You haven't heard that story?' Sonny turned his chair towards Jane as if he were settling himself for a longer talk. Jane looked at her watch. 'Listen, I said I'd meet Tom for pizza, but why don't you tag along? It sounds like the kind of thing he might be interested in hearing too.' 'Well—if you're sure I won't be in the way.'"

  • Not So Different 50: Fortune Spins Its Wheels, by J-D (COMPLETE!): "'After my experience of life, can you expect me to believe in guardian angels? Can you expect me to agree that it's good for somebody to believe in guardian angels?' He held up the fifty-dollar bill between the fingers of both hands and flexed his wrists and knuckles to make it crackle. 'Better to learn to be your own guardian angel.' He put the money in a pocket and left the room."

  • Quinn's Code 03: Cafe Geekdale, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 3): "'Futurama, 10%. Lord of the Rings, 30%. Halo,75%. World of Warcraft, 95 %. The Matrix, 80%. Battlestar Galactica 45 %. Wheel of Time, 25%. Redwall, 55%. Back to the Future, 70 %.' Tori then listed a few more, some not even sci-fi or fantasy. 'I get the point!' Stacy said, even though she liked some of the stories listed. 'Yes. Tori, I see that the games have become very popular. That is why we need to destroy the Geekendorffer's popularity!' Sandi said."

  • Remembrance, by HolyGrail2007 (part 13): "'Daria.' She thought as she sank into the bed that was still slightly too soft. 'Do you think like I do? That this all started way back when? Well, of course you don't know yet, I've been here by myself. But, if you wanted to come out here, I wouldn't say no.' Kim thought to herself. She didn't believe in psychic powers, Daria couldn't hear her. But it was a nice, slow thought that helped her get to sleep."

  • Rude Awakening Ep. 6: That Party Last Night!, by DIsaac (COMPLETE!): "JANE: Yes we will -You Writer. Me Artist. Yeah we will be starving but we will have our dignity! DARIA: Last time I checked dignity isn't a form of currency. JANE: So you are saying? DARIA: Grab a mop, Scruffy. JANE: Dammit, Morgendorffer." (Part 11) (Part 12)

  • Screams of Silence, by Jim North: "The shaking finally stops, and I pull myself up to my knees. My katana scrapes noisily across the metal floor, but the sound doesn't end when I stop moving the weapon. Did I think before that I was going to be alone on the other side of the veil? I was wrong." (New part)

  • Tony Sees the Light (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: It's Friday!!), by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): "Kevin walked into DeMartino's class ten minutes before first period. DeMartino glared dispassionately at the youth, but the expression slipped when he took in the uncharacteristic pensive expression on the boy's face. 'Uh, Mr. De? Can I ask you a favor?'"

  • Unnamed story (Proposed Iron Chef: 1,000 Jakes), by Grifter74: "Jake woke to the sounds of an air raid siren, something he hadn't heard since he was a kid. Looking around, Jake was sure he was in his office, but something was off. Before, he could take a closer look, he heard Quinn shouting, 'Daddy, we got to go to the shelter. Those stupid monsters are attacking again.'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: It's Friday!!), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "'Babies are faaaaaaat,' said Tiffany, heading to the maternity ward with blank eyes. 'Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat...'"

National Chocolate Eclair Day, Hooray!

Today is the birthday of NBC and MTV personality Carson Daly, who voiced the character of David Sorenson on Is It Fall Yet? Happy 36th, dude.

The International Committee for Adding Useless Holidays to the Calendar has declared that today is also National Chocolate Eclair Day, but no one wrote down how we are to celebrate it. Alas! Guess you should go have yourself a doughnut.

Off the top of my head, only one Daria fanfic had anything to do with chocolate eclairs. That was this one. Bon appetit.

NEWZ: Doggieboy's turn at the Iron Chef wheel, as he presents three new challenges for the Angst Lord Time-Trials Redux!

The "Second Coming of the New Ideas Thread" was just given a boost by newcomer Trscroggs, who has lots of wild new ideas for Daria fanfiction. Check it out.

FF.net
  • Sinspiration, by Vlora (Part 19): Daria slipped out of bed, her eyes shut against the morning and against the sound of a hair dryer running at its highest setting. She assumed correctly that she wouldn’t be allowed into the bathroom anytime soon. With this in mind, she dragged on the familiar outfit that she wore daily. Over the past few weeks, Jane had been working. And Trent had been working. The notion completely ruined her mind: two people who seemed entirely timeless were actually sticking to a timed schedule.

PPMB
  • Action Stories 3: Two Knights Defense, by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): “Everything is going to be okay,” Lynn said gently. She was half carrying Ronnie as they slipped out of the building and into the alley. The drug that had been used on the younger girl was still playing havoc with her system, causing her to stumble every couple of steps.
  • Going Over Viagra Falls, or: Do You Feel a Draft? by TAG (COMPLETE!): “I must say I'm honored you've chosen to spend your valuable Saturday night with me,” said Jane as she walked up to the table and took a seat across from her dour friend. “What happened, amiga? Did you get a night off from nursing duty?”
  • Helen Morgendorffer's Secret Past, by Kangaballs (Part 1): [Continued from here] "I'm sorry I talked you into the extacy, but honestly I really believe you have a chance with my brother. You two fit, you mesh well together, and you bring out the best in that lazy bum. I've seen you with him for years now, and I know the way you look at him, and the way you think. I also know that my brother may always be some mediocre band player for the rest of his life and never do anything else or have much of a rich future, but I truly believe you wouldn't judge him for that, and you are the only one that I'd trust wouldn't break his heart and leave him lonely forever."
  • A Little Dab Will Do Ya, by Kangaballs (COMPLETE!): Daria woke up in a bed that she was not familiar with, and with dread filling her brain she looked under the covers to reveal that she had been sleeping completely naked. Ice shards of fear shot through her as intense as the blinding headache that she'd been feeling since she opened her eyes.
  • M4, by Silver (COMPLETE!): The doors to Lawndale High School swing open. A young man enters. His name is unimportant. The fact the metal detectors start howling is. He raises the pistol in his hand, and cuts down the security guard. The guard manages to trigger the alarm anyways.
  • Reaped Out, by Pinkminx (Part 13): The whole room seemed to move in slow motion, from the moment Tom had slipped to the echoing shotgun that had brought complete silence to the mall less than a minute had passed. Three figures stood out against the sea of crouched bodies near the safety railing on the top floor. They watched as time seemed to return to a normal pace and the people began to move as the understanding that something terrible had just happened began to sink in.
  • Unnamed story (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by Project Pegasus (COMPLETE!): "But I swear," Tom said desperately as he pulled against his restraints, "I thought she was a feral pig eating a cow!"
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Angst Lord Time-Trials Redux), by Derek (COMPLETE!): "In other news, the Morgendorffer sex scandal took a new turn today..."
  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fanfic Should Have: TGIF), Angelboy (Part 1, I hope!): Jane looked at the old picture from her high-school yearbook. She could have sworn that she had been sitting with Daria when that picture was taken, but there was no Daria in the picture. Flipping through the book, she frowned seeing that Daria wasn't in there at all.
  • Unnamed story (Second Coming of the New Ideas Thread), by Trscroggs (Part 1, I hope!): Jane Lane walked morosely down the corridor after the school wide ‘mandatory’ memorial for Tommy Sherman. As she had expected, the memorial glossed over almost everything about Tommy, leaving only that he played football for the glory of Lawndale. She walked casually up to her locker, but checked to make sure she was alone before speaking to the open air. “Did you have something to do with this?”

The Man Who Tried to Tutor the Fashion Club

Remember the guy who was the voice of David Sorenson, in Is It Fall Yet? He's MTV personality Carson Daly, and today is his 35th birthday. Yo!

Not that Sandi cares.

More later.
