GeoCities Was Vaporized

As we've heard in the latest news releases, Yahoo! has shut down GeoCities, and thus a fair number of the older Daria fan sites have vanished, possibly for good. In the next few weeks I will be searching for dead links at left, and if Archive.org has them copied down I will post the (dead) links in the "Blast from the Past" section near the bottom of the column. Alas, I think we lost some good ones. If you know of some sites in particular that are no more, please name them (with link if possible) in the Comments section, to aid my searching.

To start off, I've just confirmed that the Daria Fan Fiction Website is no more. Can only imagine how many others bit the dust, too.

The Internet is such a terribly temporary place.

A Blast from the Past for an Italian Outcast

Okay, this one was too weird not to share. While poking through an Italian Daria fansite, I discovered a link to an extinct website: the old Daria section of MTV's Italian website, to be precise. The website can be called up using the Wayback Machine, and here is the link to do it: daria.mtv.it

The site was started in 2001 and discontinued not long ago, but it was big. Skip around the different time links on the Wayback Machine and see how the site evolved and what art and logos they used. This is truly weird. I love it, I love it, I love it.

My Brain Hurts

I had something incredibly awesome to post here, but my head cold erased all the information. I have no idea what it was, except that it was awesome.

The Dead Have Such Interesting Names

As I was poking through the many Daria websites at left, I discovered an entire page of links dating from 1999. Almost all of the sites listed have been deleted or moved, and most of those still in existence have not been updated since the turn of the millennium. However, what is most interesting are the names of the extinct websites, names that modern-day website designers might wish to use for their own Daria sites. In particular I like Monster Trucks and Naked Models (from Jane's quote in "It Happened One Nut") and Lawndale City Limits. You might see other names worth appropriating, so have at it . . . and take a moment to sigh wistfully at the disappearance of those fabled sites that came before us, roaming the ancient plains of the World Wide Web by the millions in another net-time and -place.

LATE ADD: Speaking of the dead, the Dariacon Wiki was removed from the list at left, as the link no longer appears to function. Alas, alackaday. . . .
