Mack Daddy Blows It

Mack's giving it all he's got for International Jazz Day, but he'd better take a breath before he passes out. I don't recall a lot of jazz references on the show, but I could definitely see a few of the characters as fans. Who on Daria do you think would be a jazz aficionado?

It was also on this day in 1803 that Thomas Jefferson signed the Louisiana Purchase. This nearly doubled the size of the country and was a big factor in the doctrine of Manifest Destiny. If you don't know what Manifest Destiny is, just ask Daria. She'll concisely and unemotionally sum it up for you!

Staaaaaar Light, Staaaaaar Bright....

Tiffany's doing a little stargazing for International Astronomy Day! Knowing Tiffany, she's probably spending less time looking for Sirius and Proxima Centauri and more time seeking Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift.

Today is also Great Poetry Reading Day, so if you'll wait just a minute Andrea and Quinn will be here to recite some of their favorite classics about rotting flesh and greasy fries. Hey, where are you going?

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 37): "The following day passed quite normally ... at least until lunchtime. Daniel, as usual, sat alone, eating his food in relative tranquility. At some point, however, a strange thing happened; he heard a female voice calling him."

  • Daria of Morsang-sur-Orge, by Rémi (parts 16 - 18): "Jeanne : Admit it, Trente : we’re lost. The night was falling, and they were still in the middle of the forest, whith no visible road or path to follow." (Part 17) (Part 18)

  • Nauseating Prize, by Lady Evil (part 2): "Tom stood on the Landons’ doorstep with a bouquet of white roses, mayflowers and anthurium. He worried for a minute if a gift of white flowers would be taken the wrong way."

  • Unnamed story (The 1002 Deaths of Tom Sloane), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Tom looked at the strange box. It was a small puzzle box that Jane has given him in order to show that there were no hard feelings."

We Always Knew She Was Twisted

Although Ms. Li is clearly taking National Pretzel Day too far, I'm not going to even try to correct her. You see, in order to do that I'd have to have my eyes open and I am not about to look at that.

Today is also Hug an Australian Day, but in light of current events I'm going to go with a polite nod in the general direction of our Daria fans from Australia.

It's the Fascist Club

I think the Fashion Club might have misunderstood the point of Fashion Revolution Day, but I'm not about to tell them. Not when they're armed, anyway.

Since this is also World Day for Laboratory Animals, we should spare a thought for the poor mouse from "The Lab Brat," whom fandom has named Roger. I sure hope that traumatized little guy found a good home. Preferably one without young, sadistic boys in it.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria of Morsang-sur-Orge, by Rémi (parts 14 and 15): "Daria (deadpan) : The famous thermal baths of Aachen, build by King Charlemagne with the techniques and lore of antiquity. I was told it was a marvel worthy of the Romans of old, and that I should see it with my own eyes. Well, about the « seeing » part, I’ve a slight problem..." (Part 15)

  • Daria: Spin the Bottle, by Meester_Lee (part 1): "Daria looked at the novel she was reading and scowled. It was a Nineteenth-Century classic that she’d probably have thrown at her in some future college-level English Literature class."

  • Daria: Winter Is Coming, by Meester_Lee (part 16): "Daria was not a morning person, and when she finally rose, she not only saw that there weren’t any clean and dry towels left in the upstairs bathroom, but that there wasn’t much hot water left, either."

  • The Death of Tom Sloane (The 1002 Deaths of Tom Sloane), by OzFerret (COMPLETE!): "The doctor sat at the large mahogany desk that dominated his office. There were the obligatory degrees and certificates decorating the wall and the usual Medical book case of the usual medical books, but it was the desk that drew ones attention."

  • Nauseating Prize, by Lady Evil (part 1): "'OK, Tom, here’s the deal.' said Jane. She took the box of chocolates and take out bag from his hands. 'I get dinner, you get lost!' She slammed the door in his face."

  • Raw Deal (The 1002 Deaths of Tom Sloane), by Lady Evil (COMPLETE!): "'Hey, Butt-Head!' said Beavis. 'I'm glad we quit our jobs at Burger World!'"

  • Worth the Trip, by Zetor (part 3): "Daria eyed her niece with a measure of respect as the girl wolfed down chili fries at what a more responsible adult might consider an unhealthy pace."

Kant Keep His Eyes Open

Poor Tom just doesn't find Immanuel Kant, born on this day in 1724, to be very exciting reading. Of course, everyone knows that "Critique of the Power of Judgment" is the real page-turner.

I would wish Marianne a happy Administrative Professionals Day, but she's far too busy to stop and listen. I'm sure Helen will ask her to send herself a nice flower arrangement, though.

I think it goes without saying that Trent is aware that today is 4/20. Don't try to tell me that his cough is hay fever. Although, come to think of it, I hope that cough isn't anything else, either!

Today is also Volunteer Recognition Day, so let's take a minute to thank all of those people who give their time to help others. Even if Ms. Li isn't forcing them to do it.

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 36): "'Well, this was surely an intense school council's meeting. I didn't expect it to be so crowded. ' Daniel said when, after almost two hours, he and Jodie left the classroom."

  • Daria: Winter Is Coming, by Meester_Lee (part 15): "Daria spent the early afternoon in the living room, despite her strong desire to retreat upstairs."

  • Erin Chambers, by OzFerret (part 37): "Erin realised she had been asleep when a bump woke her."

  • Lucky, it's Past, by Lady Evil (part 5): "Daria looked around at the interior of Phineas T. Firefly, the restaurant Trent had brought her to."

  • Silver Linings (Iron Chef: QUARANTINE!), by EntrancedCat (COMPLETE!): "Daria slowly panned the web camera over her tools before bringing the focus back to her face. Tom smiled at her over the marvel which was the internet."

  • Sitting at Home (Iron Chef: QUARANTINE!), by JPAGC (part 2): "'Hello, Dad?' 'Hey, Kiddo!' Jake Morgendorffer's voice came loud and cheerful through the phone. 'How are you?'"

  • Unnamed story (The 1002 Deaths of Tom Sloane), by Lady Evil (part 2): "'...Fifty-two bottles of blue milk on da wall!' it continued to sing. 'Fifty-two bottles of blue milk!'"

Setting a New Record

Daria and Jane would be enjoying Record Store Day an awful lot more if Upchuck wasn't participating. They'd probably be happier if he at least took his hand out of his pocket.

This also happens to be Newspaper Columnists Day, so take your pick between Future Daria's "preaching to the converted" column of outrage or the Ask Brittany advice column. Decisions, decisions.

The (Not-So) Great Educator

Mr. O'Neill's hoping that if he dresses as Charlie Chaplin on the comedian's birthday, then maybe it will feel like his students are laughing with him, not at him. (Spoiler alert: they're not laughing with him.)

Today is also National Stress Awareness Day, so be sure to tell Jake that you're aware of his stress. "Stressed? Why do people keep telling me I'm stressed? If I weren't stressed, I'd get stressed by everyone telling me I'm stressed!"

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria of Morsang-sur-Orge, by Rémi (part 13): "Roland took seriously his promise of helping Daria to study, as he apparently took seriously any duty he accepted. In fact, « serious » and « dutiful » were the two words coming to Daria’s mind when she thought about the paladin."

  • Farewell, by browneyedbagel (COMPLETE!): "'I’ve been told that art is subjective. You can hang a painting on a wall for fifty people to look at, and it’s very reasonable to assume that there will be fifty different points of view about the significance of the art.'"

  • Unnamed story (The 1002 Deaths of Tom Sloane), by Lady Evil (part 1): "Tom Sloane woke to a feeling of blood rushing to his head. 'Where am I?' he groaned."

She's Probably a Lot Smarter Now

Brittany has traded in her pom-poms for flippers in honor of National Dolphin Day, but I notice she kept the ponytails. Kevin's in for a big surprise on their next date.

Today is also Ex Spouse Day, but don't tell Ms. Barch. Unless you want to hear a long rant about lazy good-for-nothing layabouts.

Finally, today is the anniversary of both "The Lab Brat" in 1997 and "Of Human Bonding" in 2000. Speaking of bonding, I still wish there were more scenes in the show of Jake and Kevin together. That's a friendship that should have been explored!

Today is also Big Wind Day, but unfortunately Wind Lane only qualifies as a medium-sized Wind at best. However, the big, wet rainstorm would certainly count.

Fanfic Update!
  • Betrayal (The 1002 Deaths of Tom Sloane), by Vukodlak (COMPLETE!): "Sir Kevin Thomson and Her Ladyship Jodie Landon dragged a barely conscious Thomas Angier Sloane into the great hall where he was roughly thrown to the ground before his wife Princess Daria Morgandorffer Sloane."

  • College Disorientation, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "'Okay, this is an informational sheet Push Comes to Love sends around to 600 leading colleges. It's called "My Personal Goals and Aspirations,"' the instructor told the college prep class."

  • Daria of Morsang-sur-Orge, by Rémi (parts 9 - 12): "A week before Pentecost, Jacques of Morsang-sur-Orge was seen journeying on the road toward Aachen, with his company of servants, squires and knights." (Part 10) (Part 11) (Part 12)

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 31): "Gradually, life at Hogwarts began to acquire a rhythm. Herbology on Monday followed by electives and study hall, Charms and Transfiguration on Tuesday, Defense Against the Dark Arts on Wednesday followed by flying lessons in the afternoon, and the dreaded Potions class on Thursdays."

  • The Definition of Mercy (The 1002 Deaths of Tom Sloane), by YouthofOz (COMPLETE!): "Sweat runs down his face. The air is running out. Or rather, the breathable air is running out."

  • Edicius, by elainefr (part 27): "'Hey.' 'Hey.' They smiled at each other. He held out a small bouquet of flowers to her. She registered clear surprise and took them."

  • Lucky, it's Past, by Lady Evil (parts 3 and 4): "'OK, all you rockin’ rugrats!' Vixx Vinyl said into the microphone." (Part 4)

  • Midwife Crisis (Life After Thirty), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn had just been run over by an 18-wheel tractor trailer. She'd seen it coming but, rather than get to safety herself, she shoved Jim out of the trucks way." (Part 4) (Part 5)

There's no way I can do nearly as good a job as she did, but I suppose I'll give it a try. It'll look like a bird if you tilt your head and squint and have never seen an actual bird before!

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria: In Another World?, by starwater09 (part 6): "Daria was currently walking through the Lawndale Mall with Jane who was in search of some much needed clay for an art contest that would be taking place a few months later when she noticed Brittany Taylor walking out of 'Gimme Some Skin' with none other than Robert Johnson."

  • Daria of Morsang-sur-Orge, by Rémi (parts 5 - 8): "Quentine was finishing to compose a bouquet of flowers for their mother, when three young men, mounted on beautiful palfreys, came riding by." (Part 6) (Part 7) (Part 8)

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 30): "Daria’s thought upon awakening on her second Sunday at Hogwarts was that it looked to be a repeat of the day before, howbeit with a chance of rain and probably without a picnic. She didn’t have classes, she did have schoolwork, and she wanted to catch up on her reading."

  • It's Only A Pandemic!, by DIsaac (part 4): "(Chipmunk is in the office when she gets an email from Corporate!) CHIPMUNK: Jodie, Come quick. We have an email on high."

  • Lawndales future elite, by rvgonzal (part 6): "Monique glared at Trent and then choked out 'Yea, continue...' 'I think we'd better start again. Trent, repeat after me. I, Trent...' continued the minister."

  • Lucky, it's Past, by Lady Evil (part 2): "'I wonder what they put in these school hamburgers.' Jane mused at lunch. 'Whoever lost the Kentucky Derby, probably.' Daria guessed."

  • Midwife Crisis (Life After Thirty), by WildDogJJ (parts 1 and 2): "Quinn was in the home office talking on the phone. 'What do you mean you can't watch the kids!? We've been planning this for weeks!'" (Part 2)

  • Necessities, by EntrancedCat (part 2): "Quinn held Jim’s arm as they emerged from PayDay to keep him from overly exalting about snatching the last two-thousand count box of sanitizing wipes and the last twelve-hundred count jug of vitamin C gummies."

Today is also Tell a Lie Day, so here's a doozy for you: Daria and Trent make the perfect couple and belong together forever!

Ugh. Now I just feel dirty. The bad kind of dirty.

Fanfic Update!
  • Burned Out, by Wrabbit7 (part 19): "Standing in line to the locally owned, Playhouse 99 movie theater, Jennifer stared at Daria in shock. 'Let me get this straight, he wanted you to watch her spawning?'"

  • Daria of Morsang-sur-Orge, by Rémi (parts 2 - 4): "The sisters were greated in the dungeon hall by their family. Their two brothers, Hugues and Arnaud, were already sitted at table and eating their breakfast with an hearty appetite. Hugues had an amused smile on his lips." (Part 3) (Part 4)

  • It's Only A Pandemic!, by DIsaac (part 3): "(Kevin is doing what he does every night, watching all the games he can while he works his show. Don't Let Those Peanuts Hijack Your Brain!

Okay, I do not recommend that Daria and Jane proceed with their planned celebration of National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day! Nothing good will result, I promise.

However, they should go right ahead and observe International Children's Book Day, especially if Daria still has her copy of Black Beauty. Jane might enjoy looking at (and critiquing) the illustrations instead.

Speaking of artwork, the episode "Art Burn" aired on this day in 2001. Jane experienced a major case of burnout, Trent had to suffer the trial of (ugh) real work, and Brittany never did find out what happened to that three-legged elephant.

Teacher of Choice

Mr. DeMartino is wishing a happy (and intense) birthday to Christopher Walken, born on this day in 1943. Since Mr. DeMartino is supposed to be based off of the actor, that only seems appropriate. Also, please enjoy Peetz5050's image manipulation of DeMartino/Walken, Weapon of Choice.

This is also the anniversary of the episodes "Malled" in 1997 and "The F Word" in 2000. Both episodes involve the Fashion Club going to the mall...but only one features kiwi-flavored lip gloss!

Fanfic Update!
  • Book Club (Daria and the Gang Thread II), by Roentgen (part 2): "Over the following week, Daria pondered her brief interaction with Sandi Griffin in the school lobby. She marked it down to Sandi's love of noir lit being an 'oddball characteristic', like that character in Charles Dickens (she couldn't remember who) that was businesslike at work but who had made his house into a miniature fort or something to repel borders."

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 35): "Daniel, furious for what had happened, marched with his head down toward Lawndale High."

  • Daria: In Another World?, by starwater09 (part 5): "'So the camping trip should be fun.' Mack says to Kevin as they pack up their things after football practice. 'It'll be nice to get away for a bit.'"

  • Daria of Morsang-sur-Orge, by Rémi (part 1): "It was Daria’s favorite part of the day, in fact the only satisfying part of it. It was still dark, although she could tell the sun was about to rise, and in the dark at least she wasn’t at a disadvantage."

  • Edicius, by elainefr (part 26): "They stood at the Morgendorffer door her looking up at him and him looking down at her. They leaned in and gave a gentle brush of their lips."

  • If Quinn Had Stayed... (IC : Quinn stayed at Stacy's place), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'What are you wearing?' Quinn asked as she stared at Stacy. The answer however was obvious, her bestie Stacy was wearing an exact copy of Quinn's favorite outfit, a pink baby-t with the smiley face and halo along with a pair of low cut jeans."

  • It's Only Just a Pandemic, by DIsaac (parts 1 and 2): "We see Dani Moreno just sitting there. Eating and reading her show rundown when Jodie Landon the General Manager of the station and Daria Morgendorffer the Programming Director comes in" (Part 2)

  • Sitting at Home (Iron Chef: QUARANTINE!), by JPAGC (part 1): "Sitting at her working desk in her home office, Daria Morgendorffer sighed for the umpteenth time as she surveyed the half-written, half-blank page displayed on her laptop screen."

  • Shiva's Self Insert: The Sucksteemers (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Closing Walls of Scholl Morgendorffer and Casa Lane), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "So... Amidst the chaos of the beginning of 2020, what with the virus outbreak, the continuing train wreck of a certain orange-blob in the Oval Office, and the ever-looming uncertainty of loosing my lucrative job and a lack of credentials beyond 'College Dropout', stuck in quarantine I was spending my time at home, trying to conserve my resources, binging on Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube, and spending much of it in a drunken haze due to not having anywhere to go."

  • The Stories in D, by Lady Evil (part 8): "Lark opened the rounded portal and had to squint at the blinding bright light that came spilling in. Just as her eyes started to adjust to the light, dozens of butterflies came at her and surrounded her."

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "The New Kid," which aired on this day in 1998. The most notable thing about this episode is the introduction of the character Ted DeWitt-Clinton, but it's also worth noting the fact that Daria just completely beats the crap out of Quinn at the end of the episode. Today is also National "Joe" Day, so let's all wish a happy holiday to one third of Quinn's entourage! I'm sure Jamie wishes he had a day for his name, because then maybe--just maybe--Quinn would remember who he is.

Fanfic Update!
  • Alone Again, by Lady Evil (COMPLETE!): "He looked at the stranger staring back at him in the mirror. Maybe stranger wasn’t the exact word- familiar stranger was closer to it, for he knew this person a bit."

  • The Angel Among Us (WildDogJJ's Throwaway Thread), by WildDogJJ (part 1): "With solemn expressions on their faces Quinn, Stacy and Sandi each took turns laying a boquet of flowers on a grave. They then stood and looked at the headstone."

  • Daria of Morsang-sur-Orge, by Rémi (part 1): "It was a fair day of spring, and the good city of Aachen was rejoicing : the great king Charlemagne, rightful ruler of France and Emperor of Rome, was back from the German countries, where he had fought a fierce war against the heathen Saxons."

  • Daria Quarantined (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Closing Walls of Scholl Morgendorffer and Casa Lane), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "Life has a funny way of kicking you in the teeth."

  • The Storm (Iron Chef: QUARANTINE!), by atiyatortilla (part 1): "Well prepared was something that Trent Lane never was, even in the face of a crisis."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Closing Walls of Scholl Morgendorffer and Casa Lane), by Lady Evil (COMPLETE!): "Not long after Daria moved in with Jane, Trent and Slash, a little black and white dog, Daria found her own little canine companion. Because she seemed so lost and because Daria was such a Shakespeare fan, this puppy (female) was named Perdita."

  • A wish granted, by sarcasticsponge (part 2): "As Daria continued down the dark stone tunnel, she noticed the tunnel was becoming bigger the longer she walked. She used the strange white glow on her hands to guide her through the dark."

Finally, today is the anniversary of the episode "Monster" in 1998, in which Daria and Jane try to make a film of substance but make the mistake of choosing Quinn as their subject. And we never did find out which was Quinn's best side, either.

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (parts 34A and 34B): "Daniel immediately noticed something strange when he woke up that morning. Or rather he sniffed something strange." (Part 34B)

  • Daria of the Milieu: Chasing Wormtrails, by Meester_Lee (part 2): "The coin sank with a splash. 'Did you make a wish?' asked Daria. 'Yes,' said Candida."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 29): "Daria had no classes on Saturday and on this particular Saturday she had no plans, save to go to the library or work on a couple of essays she’d been assigned as homework."

  • Love Times Two (Iron Chef: Send a Character "Foward" in Time), by neonhomer (COMPLETE!): "Quinn walked down and across the hall to her bedroom, closing the door behind as she walked in. Though the sun was shining brightly outside, the pink curtains filtered the light coming in, leaving a gloomy look to the room."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: QUARANTINE!), by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "Sitting down on her desk, inside her room, Daria Morgendorffer increased the volume of her headphones and concentrated on the sight right before her: the plump figure of Mrs. Bennett practically filled the screen of her laptop as she spoke to the improvised camera in front of her."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: QUARANTINE!), by peetz5050 (COMPLETE!): "'But Ms. Li!' Mrs. Manson exclaimed. 'How can you justify the expense of purchasing a NetExtender software licence for every student in the school? It's consumed the balance for the rest of the school year!'"

Mr. DeMartino is preparing for a great Poultry Day, or at least he was until Brittany and Kevin interrupted him. Now he might decide to stuff a few dim-witted students into the oven instead.

Speaking of chickening out (or in this case, not), today is also the anniversary of the episode "The Story of D," which aired on this day in 2001. Daria took a chance at getting a story published and was rejected, but not before we got some funny lines out of the experience. My favorite? This one:

  • Burned Out, by Wrabbit7 (part 18): "The Peterson living room was filled with the sound of Samantha drumming on the coffee table, as well as empty soda cans, magazines, and an empty dinner plate with her drumsticks."

  • Erin Chambers, by OzFerret (part 36): "Erin had taken advantage of her early departure from work and had showered and changed clothes before walking to the restaurant for the Library’s dinner. The route was familiar so she allowed her thoughts to wander."

  • The Necessities, by EntrancedCat (part 1): "'Okay, everyone has their assignments,' Jim Carbone reminded his passengers as they pulled into Long Island’s Payday Mart’s parking lot."

  • The Plague Of Daria (Daria and Quinn), by WildDogJJ (part 2): "Quinn's white Cadillac CTS is going down Main Street. Inside, Quinn was driving while Daria rode in the front passenger seat."

They're all probably feeling extra unlucky because today is also Friday the 13th. Makes you wonder what the Holiday Island version is like, doesn't it? Perpetually unlucky or just especially superstitious?

The Apple Doesn't Fall Far From the QB

Kevin's in a cheerful mood because he's planting plenty of apple trees for Johnny Appleseed Day. Of course, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he's scattering apple seeds. Knowing him, they might be pebbles or marbles or belly button lint.

Fanfic Update!
  • Book Club (Daria and the Gang), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "It was now 5:10 pm. There was no point for Daria to wait for Marianne to pick her up."

  • Bruises, Scars, Loose Teeth (Odds and Ends), by LSM (COMPLETE!): "Another ruck. That's all they were now, rucks."

  • Tell Me I'm a Wreck, by conquerlove (fullbrightness) (part 3): "I think the carpet has my boot tracks permanently dug in from how much I've been pacing."

I Think Quinn's Still Got Her Beat on Accessories

Happy birthday to the plastic doll Barbie, who was "born" on this day in 1959. Quinn's role in this alter ego is almost too on-the-nose, isn't it? Oh, don't tell her I said anything about her nose. Dr. Shar doesn't need any more customers.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "I Don't" in 1998. We got to meet a whole bunch of new characters, including Brian and Aunt Amy and Luhrmann and creepy priest guy and...holy cow, what a mixed bag! Some great characters and some truly awful ones.

He Probably Just Wants the Plastic Toy Inside

Jake's clearly enjoying National Cereal Day, although he seems more interested in figuring out what King Tut was buried without. Spoiler alert: it wasn't his diver.

Remember to set your clocks an hour forward for Daylight Saving Time tonight so you don't end up late to everything (coughTrentcough). Unless you live in a rational place where they don't bother with Daylight Saving Time, that is. Lucky you!

Fanfic Update!
  • An Anger Observed, by Rémi (COMPLETE!): "« If you can see any of my pores on camera, I swear, I'll kill you. Stop the tape ! I do not have pores ! My pores are cute ! My pores are tiny ! You're fired ! »" (Part 3)

  • The Con (Daria and Quinn), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn and Jim's eight-year old sons Tommy, Timmy and Teddy were seated on the living room sofa watching TV. Actually, Tommy and Timmy were watching TV while Teddy was reading 'Animal Farm' and tuning everyone out." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Doctor Who – Repeating Mistakes, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "The Doctor returned to the TARDIS, and found that Janelle, his latest travelling companion, was leaning against the doors lost in thought. 'Janelle?'"

  • Her Face All Red, by LittleRaven (COMPLETE!): "Daria sat, frozen. She hadn't been touched this much since...she'd never been touched this much, not by anyone who wasn't related to her, and it had been a long time since she'd started taking cash for the privilege."

  • Q/S short (Ferret's stash), by Ozferret (COMPLETE!): "Quinn nervously bushed imaginary lint from her jacket. Long gone were the pink midriff tops of yesteryear, replaced by the finest Skirts and Jackets that business style could offer."

  • The Stories in D, by Lady Evil (part 4): "Mike couldn’t concentrate on how miserable he was with that stupid bird pecking at his window. It probably saw his reflection and was trying to pick a fight with it. He decided he’d better shoo it off."

Which Is My Best Personality? I Know They're Both Good.

I think maybe Quinn is having a little too much fun for Multiple Personality Day, especially because she's currently recreating Daria's worst nightmare. Everyone be extra nice to the Eunice inside, okay?

Today is also the anniversary of the episode Fat Like Me, which aired on this day in 2001. Sandi battling weight gain was okay, Daria and Jane's betting B-plot was meh, but the real high point of the episode was Stacy completely losing her shit at Tiffany in the girls' restroom. That whole scene is a classic.

Say That Into My Good Ear!

Jane and her grandma are sure enjoying World Hearing Day, or at least one of them is. Jane is too busy regretting her recent life choices.

That said, today we celebrate a triple anniversary: "Esteemsters" in 1997, "The Old and the Beautiful" in 1999, and "Antisocial Climbers" in 2000. That first one means that today is the anniversary of the TV show Daria itself!

Fanfic Update!
  • An Anger Observed, by Rémi (part 1): "Daria was furious. She felt a cold, deep anger. It wasn't surprising, of course. She had just lived a bad day."

  • The Art of Seduction (Random Pairing Challenge 2020), by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "Skylar slouched against a wall, bored but trying not to look like it."

  • Daria: High School Reunion, by Serrallonga (part 10): "CUT TO the Limbo- unknown place -unknown time. (Like everytime DARIA and TOMMY touch each other, their consciences are transferred to a kind of Limbo, where they can read and feel each other's thoughts)"

  • Erin Chambers, by OzFerret (part 35): "Erin drove to a station and caught the T to the Boston Products Office. Arriving at her desk she avoided the glances of her work mates and placed a small plastic model of The Golden Gate Bridge on her desk."

  • Mecha Ensign Daria: Mechs Education novelisation, by Charles RB (parts 1 and 2): "In the dark hours of Tuesday night, strange readings had been detected from the great lake in Carter County, Maryland." (Part 2)

  • The Stories in D, by Lady Evil (parts 2 and 3): "Clarissa couldn't believe she was on a luxury cruise in a gorgeous silver satin gown. Even more unbelievable was that Jesse was reclining next to her on the chaise lounge, looking splendid in a tuxedo. There was just one thing niggling on her mind that she had to ask." (Part 3)

  • A wish granted, by sarcasticsponge (part 1): "One late-evening in Highland, Texas, saw one fourteen year-old Daria Morgendorffer sitting by herself on an old swing set in a local park near her home."

  • Worth the Trip, by Zetor (part 4): "Daria hung up the hotel bar's phone, assured a cab was on the way. She looked back at the table where Rita had ended up sticking her—Helen working through a bottle of wine like there was a prize at the bottom, Amy prodding her on, and poor Jake trying to fight the inevitable—and decided that the restroom might be a better place to wait out her ride."

Well, THAT'S Not Kosher!

Jamie's apparently a big fan of National Pig Day, but I don't think he's thought this all the way through. Honestly, I'm a little curious about the story behind this particular alter ego. Did the artist just really not like Jamie?

This is also Peanut Butter Lovers' Day, so feel free to let peanuts hijack your brain. Moth to a flame. Oh, you know the rest!

Zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Daria and Jane have fully embraced Public Sleeping Day, but I'm afraid they have a long way to go to beat Trent's record on this one. I prefer to do my sleeping in private, if only to avoid Sharpie-related shenanigans.

Today is also Floral Design Day, so why not join Quinn in making a dainty garland for your head? Singing is optional.

Fanfic Update!
  • Choice and Chance for a Barksdale (Iron Chef: Daria The Youngest Barksdale), by EntrancedCat (part 2): "(Jake is driving his daughter, Quinn, and sister-in-law, Daria, to high school; Quinn is riding shotgun, Daria is in the back seat) Jake - Girls, I just want you to know your mother, uh, and Helen, uh, and I realize it's not easy moving to a whole new town -- especially for you, Daria, right?"

  • Play It Again, Darling (Random Pairing Challenge 2020), by nightbeast37 (COMPLETE!): "'So what are you up to?' Daria asked Trent. 'Did some mid-level rock band turn up at your doorstep and request your services for 3 months? Or are you going for a so-called co-headlining tour with Bush?'"

  • The Seduction Of Quinn (Daria and Quinn), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Daria and Quinn are sitting on the couch watching TV. Cut to the TV screen and we see a handsome man and a beautiful woman make out passionately while a dead body lay on the floor with multiple stad wounds. The man had a blood soaked knife in his hand." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • The Stories in D, by Lady Evil (part 1): "'Ma belle Melody,' Gaétan sighed. 'How these raging flames highlight your hair and make your eyes sparkle.'"

Someone Munched a Bunch of the Wrong Lunch

Poor Quinn is not having a very good National Pistachio Day, but only because she's allergic to pistachio dye. I guess she can kiss that neck modeling career goodbye!

Today is also Tell a Fairy Tale Day, and the Gupty kids are eager to hear your new takes on the old classics. Bonus points if they include useful life lessons about child support and permanent records.

Finally, the episode "Sappy Anniversary" first aired on this day in 2001. Daria found out that Tom isn't the romantic type, and we found out that Jake likes to give malformed candles as gifts.

Bet You "Cocktail" is One of His Favorite Movies

It's World Bartender Day, but I think Upchuck is severely underestimating the amount of beer needed for people to want to spend time around him. The correct amount is "approaching deadly levels of alcohol poisoning."

Poor eyesight would also help, which is why it's fitting that today is the anniversary of the episode "Through a Lens Darkly" in 1999. Of course, even without her glasses Daria knows better than to trust Upchuck. The question is, does Eunice?

Fanfic Update!
  • Burned Out, by Wrabbit7 (part 17): "Jennifer laid on her bed, her socked feet planted on the wall behind her headboard. She had been in that position for the better part of the last two hours, bouncing a small rubber ball at the wall between her feet, and catching it on the rebound."

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 33): "Quinn did everything she could to distract her grandmother ... and things worked for a while."

  • Everything to Fear But Camp Itself, by Lady Evil (COMPLETE!): "Back at Camp Grizzly, the paramedics were waiting. Tiffany, still sleeping, was whisked off to the nearest hospital. The police took Mr. Pott’s statement and asked about the missing boys. Allen and Link were presented."

He's the Guy Who Cut Down the Cherry Tree With His Teeth, Right?

Kevin's ready to party for George Washington's birthday, but I dare you to ask him who Washington was. Bonus points if he answers "the dollar guy."

Of course, perhaps Kevin would surprise us all by actually getting an answer right! It could happen, because today is also World Thinking Day. We can always hope for a miracle, right?

Down, Boy! Bad Vibes!

It's Love Your Pet Day, but Helen doesn't look like she's feeling particularly affectionate toward Leary right now. A handful of Daria characters have pets, but very few of them appear onscreen. It's a shame, though--a Daria episode revolving around pets could have been amusing. Ah, well. I guess that's what fanfic is for!

Fanfic Update!
  • Choice and Chance for a Barksdale (Iron Chef: Daria The Youngest Barksdale), by EntrancedCat (part 1): "Newly minted fifteen-year-old Daria Barksdale yawned after her nap and smoothed down the pleats in her short black skirt. She left her room and padded down the stairs of her Baltimore townhouse."

  • Daria: High School Reunion, by Serrallonga (part 9): "DARIA: Are you kidding me? TOMMY: See by yourself (he extends his hand). I'd explain, but it will be faster and more explicit if we do that Vulcan mind-reading thing. Please?"

  • Edicius, by elainefr (part 24): "'Good morning ladies,' Helen walked into the Lane household looking around the next morning. Jane and Daria traded smirks while each taking a sip of the coffee that Trent had made after making a run to the all-night grocery store."

  • A Girl and Her Cat, by neonhomer (part 2): "'So, who pays for the pizza this time?' Asked Jane as she finished her slice and reached for another one."

  • A Lane’s Return to Lawndale (), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "Summer Lane looked at Lawndale from the roadside. She usually hated returning to the place. This time was no different."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria The Youngest Barksdale), by Zetor (parts 2 and 3): "As she and Amy pulled up to the hotel, Daria spotted her other sisters, Rita and Helen, standing at the entrance alongside their significant others." (Part 3)

What Could Go Wrong?

Jane and Alison are ill-advisedly celebrating National Drink Wine Day, but as long as Jane keeps a level head and...never mind.

Today is also the anniversary of the publication of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in 1885. Daria would like to remind everyone that Huckleberry Hound is a complete different character who was not created by Mark Twain.

And the Winner Is...Fashion!

Stacy is thrilled to be named the winner of the Daytona 500, which is taking place later today. You can talk about dirt and grease and broken nails, but that's about the happiest I have ever seen Stacy so let's not ruin it for her.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Arts 'N Crass," which aired on this day in 1998. It was preceded by the Daria Day Marathon, and if you like fourth-wall breaking and metahumor then this will totally be totally your jam.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 28): "One class had Daria worried: Potions. Potions had acquired the reputation as being one of the toughest classes at Hogwarts: the professor wasn’t just strict, but also extremely sarcastic and demanding and was reputed to favor Slytherin, the House he headed."

  • Daria's Great Adventure, by dmsfanman (part 35): "Tom and Darren were back to looking at each other through the windshields of their respective rovers. Tom reflected on how being a pioneer on the infinite frontier of space seemed to involve a tremendous amount of waiting and boredom."

  • Everything to Fear But Camp Itself, by Lady Evil (part 7): "'Well, here we are, Camp Grizzly.' said Bruno. 'How ya feeling, Kina?'"

  • A family Secret, by Rémi (COMPLETE!): "« Can I come in ? » Quinn was surprised both by Daria’s hesitant demeanour and her embarassed question."

  • On the curb (Random Pairing Challenge 2020), by sarcasticsponge (COMPLETE!): "One early morning in Lawndale saw one Tom Sloan driving slowly around town contemplating about his life several months after Daria broke up with him."

  • T.A.Ts from a Magazine (Random Pairing Challenge 2020), by EntrancedCat (COMPLETE!): "'Ohhh,' Brittany Taylor cooed appreciatively as she studied the document enshrined on the wall. 'Great Prairie State University! I’m going there you know! Or maybe you don’t? But Ms. Manson, this says you, philosophiae doctoris uh, do philosophy. I thought you were a psychologist.'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Saga Goes On), by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "It was a tuesday morning in Lawndale. In the Morgendorffer household, like countless homes across the US, this meant that its occupants prepared for yet another working day."
