He's the QB of Horticulture

Kevin is doing his best to plant apple trees for Johnny Appleseed Day, or at least I hope that those are apple seeds. They could be pieces of dryer lint that someone told him were seeds and he'd believe it. But then again, if the Tommy Sherman Memorial Crutch can sprout then anything is possible.

Anything is definitely possible in dreams, so it's also appropriate that today is National Dream Day. I suppose Trent is probably celebrating right now. Daria might not want to, because some of the dreams we saw in the show were less than pleasant.

If she has that hospital dream about dying again, she should remind herself that it's just practice for her potential career as a mortician. Since it's National Funeral Director and Mortician Recognition Day, I wish her every bit of luck if she did decide to follow that path!

The Apple Doesn't Fall Far From the QB

Kevin's cheerfully planting apple trees in honor of Johnny Appleseed Day, or at least I hope that's what he's doing. With his brain power, he might be trying to plant jelly beans.

Fruit would be an excellent addition to your morning meal for Better Breakfast Day, although the Morgendorffers will probably stick with sugar tarts and cereal. Maybe Helen will cook some more imaginary pancakes to celebrate National Pancake Day, though! Just remember Quinn's advice: don't eat "the first pancake off the stove. You have to feed one to the dog."

Despite that absolutely awful statement she made to the three Js, they'll most assuredly still send her gifts and proclamations of their affection, and not only because it's Love Note Day. Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that Quinn sends love notes to herself.

Fanfic Update!
  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 42): "If there was a date every year that really scrambled Lawndale up like nothing else could, it was indeed that very last night that October shared with the very first hours of November."

  • Reverse the Chase, by BracedRhombus (part 9): "'Who can tell me the answer to question five?' asked Mr. Aldridge. Charlene's hand shot up like a rocket. She glanced around the room—hers was the only one raised."

Does an Apple a Day Keep the Mortician Away?

It's Johnny Appleseed Day (again), the holiday so nice they celebrate it twice! Still, Kevin is more than happy to plant some apple trees, especially as they'll be easier to grow than a memorial crutch.

Today is also National Funeral Director and Mortician Recognition Day, and if Daria followed her recommended career path then I hope she has a good one. Just...hopefully not by drumming up extra business.

An Apple a Day Keeps the QB...Busy

Kevin's hoping for a big apple tree crop for Johnny Appleseed Day, but I don't think he has much of a green thumb. A thick skull, yes, but his gardening skills are doubtful. Then again, who knows what hidden depths lurk in there? Fanfic potential, perhaps?

Today is also World Heart Day, and I hope you'll all join me in hoping that Jake has been extra careful lately. One heart attack is plenty, and he doesn't exactly live a stress-free life.

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by st91 (part 58 - 60): "The next day, Daniel and the members of the school newspaper were having lunch at their usual table." (Part 60)

  • Something To Talk Show About (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have), by breitasparrow (COMPLETE!): "'I kissed your boyfriend. I kissed Tom,' Daria said. Jane closed her eyes as the 'Oooooooooooooooo!' from the audience grew louder."

  • Teddy's Muse, by wilddogjj (part 1): "A class of second graders was assembled on the basketball court outside of the school. Their teacher, a middle-aged woman with graying hair named Mrs. Donnelly had just brought them out for Phys Ed."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria and Brittany Swap), by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "As she approached a freshly cooked breakfast of eggs and sausage, awaiting on a silver plate placed upon a seemingly endless rosewood dining table that she'd never eaten at before, Daria wondered why this all seemed so familiar."

  • Who Will Survive In America?, by ladyevil (parts 4 - 6): "Daria hoped she could get through getting changed for swim practice without being annoyed by idiots." (Part 5) (Part 6)

The Apple Doesn't Fall Far From the QB

Kevin's in a cheerful mood because he's planting plenty of apple trees for Johnny Appleseed Day. Of course, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he's scattering apple seeds. Knowing him, they might be pebbles or marbles or belly button lint.

Fanfic Update!
  • Book Club (Daria and the Gang), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "It was now 5:10 pm. There was no point for Daria to wait for Marianne to pick her up."

  • Bruises, Scars, Loose Teeth (Odds and Ends), by LSM (COMPLETE!): "Another ruck. That's all they were now, rucks."

  • Tell Me I'm a Wreck, by conquerlove (fullbrightness) (part 3): "I think the carpet has my boot tracks permanently dug in from how much I've been pacing."

The QB of Apple Planting

Kevin's wishing us all a happy Johnny Appleseed Day, although I'd bet serious money that he doesn't even know who Johnny Appleseed is. Still, eat an apple to celebrate, or if you don't like apples then just chuck one really hard at Kevin. It's surprisingly therapeutic, or so Mr. DeMartino tells me.

An Apple a Day Keeps the QB Away!

Kevin's doing his part for Johnny Appleseed Day, although it's possible that he's just trying to find a good replacement for the Tommy Sherman Memorial Tree/Crutch. I am deeply skeptical of Kevin's farming skills, but whatever keeps him happy and occupied is fine with me.

Fanfic Update!
  • All's Fair, by Princess_Pasta (parts 7 and 8): "Daria really should've known that a simple trip to the convenience store would not go easily. She managed to wrangle up a four pack of toilet paper for her dad but she'd barely made it out of the store before she was confronted by the masses." (Part 8)

  • Aunt Daria (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Saga Goes On), by Szcz (part 2): "'Which year is this cool guy at?' 'Quinn, it is a teacher. Too '60 clothes. Also he's not rich.'"

  • Bad Influence (Life After Thirty), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Quinn and Jim have sat Tommy down in the living room for a very stern lecture. Quinn said 'Cussing out your teacher!!! What the hell!?!' Tommy said 'But Shane told me I was cool.'" (Part 3)

  • Coffee, by Zetor (COMPLETE!): "The remainder of the movie played out quicker than Daria would have preferred. As the credits rolled across the screen, Stacy sat up and stretched, letting out a long yawn. 'Excuse me,' she said, the last of the yawn working its way into her voice."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (parts 46 - 49): "The Morgendorffers returned to the motel and ate a late breakfast. Afterwards. They went back to their rooms, Helen enjoining her daughters to look around and make sure they didn't leave anything behind, and then loaded their luggage. They then checked out, strapped Veronica into her booster seat, then set off for the road that would take them to Virginia." (Part 47) (Part 48) (Part 49)

  • Tales from the Crypt: Who was Texting Me?, by xXSlasherXx (part 1): "Football practice must've been running long, because Kevin had never been this late to pick her up on date night. It was a Friday night and Kevin was two hours late. Brittany was positively livid."

  • The Temptation of Tom Sloane, by RĂ©mi (COMPLETE!): "Cedars of Lawndale Mental Health Unit. Quinn is entering the visitation room. Daria is there waiting for her, sitting on a sofa. She is still wearing her straightjacket and has a vacant look on her face."

An Apple a Day Keeps the QB Away!

Kevin's cheerfully planting apple trees for Johnny Appleseed Day, or at least he thinks he is. I'm not entirely certain he could tell an apple seed from a pebble, so who knows what he's really doing right now. Still, it keeps him out of trouble and away from Mr. DeMartino, so let the boy have his fun.

He's the Apple QB!

Kevin's planting apples in honor of Johnny Appleseed Day...or at least I hope those are apple seeds. He could have anything from jelly beans to fingernail clippings in that bag. Still, if the cheerleaders can make a crutch sprout a flower then I suppose anything's possible.

Fanfic Update!
  • 1976, by CaffeineAddict94 (COMPLETE!): "The sweltering summer heat was beating down on her, sweat raining down her back. Daria tried to take up refuge underneath an old oak tree but the branches provided little to no coverage."

  • Beat It, by metameric1 (parts 5 and 6): "Jane opened the door to find Helen Morgendorffer standing there. It was late Sunday morning, and the workaholic lawyer lady was heading to the office and had apparently decided to stop on the way." (Part 6)

  • Burned Out, by Wrabbit75 (part 4): "Seeing Daria walk in the room, Jennifer breathed a sigh of relief. English class always seemed to go by a lot easier when she was around."

  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 32): "Daria was once more staying over at Casa Lane. Daria had a great deal more subconscious issues than even she'd known about that had been dragged out of her by Jean-Michel, professional psychologist and employed head-shrinker of Quiet Ivy."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: No Country For Unpleasant Old Men, by Meester_Lee (parts 2a and 2b): "When you looked beyond the superficialities, Nightingale Aero Charters, Ltd. was an unusual air charter company." (Part 2b)

  • The Game, by dmsfanman (COMPLETE!): "Tom woke up, arose from the couch, and looked out the window. The wind had picked up overnight and the trees had lost their first few leaves, but were still mostly green. Still, the sky was clear and Daria should have a nice trip back to Raft."

  • SOS, by Princess_Pasta (COMPLETE!): "McGrundy's was the last place that Jake Morgendorffer expected to find himself on a Friday night but he'd lost control of his life a long time ago. He grimaced as he sipped his martini, wondering if this was what rock bottom looked like."

Ring a Bell and Kevin Will Plant an Apple Seed!

Kevin's hard at work for Johnny Appleseed Day, but someone should probably check his bag. For all we know, the genius is planting jelly beans.

Today we also celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Ivan Pavlov, the janitor physiologist who is best known for his work with classical conditioning.

Fanfic Update!
  • Evening, by JPAGC (part 2d): "When Daria and Jane stepped into the foyer, Quinn and Sandi were knocking on the visitors' bathroom door. 'Stacy, are you all right in there?' asked Quinn through the closed door."

  • General Semantics, Private Angst, by gwrtheyrn (part 50): "Mr Caswall was planning how to break into a house, but needed to develop some skills to do so."

  • Lawndale 2021, by Anguirus1955 (parts 9 - 11): "Tommy Sherman looked at his clock before returning his attention to the TV. 'They're darn good pa's, but they break the law! American Psycho-Dads on the next Sick Sad World!'" (Part 10) (Part 11)

  • Slow Flows the River, by UU (part 4): "'In '69, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy because I wanted to sail the seven seas! Instead I found myself riding a Swift Boat—in Vietnam! We were the swamp guerrillas, rollin' on the river!' Amy was sitting at the bar next to her new acquaintance."

Kevin Appleseed, QB of Planting Apple Trees!

Happy Johnny Appleseed Day! Or at least one of two Johnny Appleseed Days. One holiday could never be enough for Kevin, I'm sure.

I hope you all remembered to set your clocks ahead an hour for Daylight Saving Time--if you live in an area that observes it, anyway. All it really means to me is that, once again, I lose an hour that could have been spent sleeping. Here's counting down the days until Fall Back!

Fanfic Update!
  • After the Disaster 2 :: Esteemers, by Fhujeth_x (part 1): "Tiffany was running behind again. She was walking as fast as she could towards Lawndale High but her speed was nothing compared to the tardiness she was about to endure. She didn't like being late. Although she was somehow able to get excused from tardiness, she wanted to be like all the other students, well, better looking than the rest, but you know what she meant."

  • And Then it Happened :: Chapter Two, by Fhujeth_x (part 2): "Komotose began to laugh, looking at Stacy in confusion and then glee, 'I like your pride and whatever.' She said, walking closer to the pig tailed girl, 'Slay a dragon and I'll let you keep it, then... Till you die or whatever... and if you can't slay the dragon, I get your soul and stuff.' She continued, 'No backing out though, you already said you wanted it so...'"

  • At the Crossroads...(Chapter 7), by oni (COMPLETE!): "Sandi wandered into the dining room and saw her mother there, sitting along with a drink in her hand. It seems that Martini’s were the drink of the hour. Linda looked up at her daughter as soon as she had come into the kitchen. The mother’s face lacked any kind of emotion and looking at her daughter’s face, it was just as emotionless as hers. Keeping a calm even tone, Linda said, 'Well, sit down.'"

  • The Battle for Scarlett (IC: There can only be ONE.....), by Doggieboy (COMPLETE!): "'Roger Taylor and John Hobbs,' a voice announced from a booth situated above one end of the bleachers. 'Both of you are in competition for the hand of Scarlett Hawkins. There is only one way to settle this competition. There can be only one. You must fight to the death. The last one standing will win the young woman’s hand.'"

  • Clique Swap, by psychotol (parts 10 and 11): "Gibson: 'Okay, break’s over, you know what to do.' Mack: 'Coach, Darth Talon has introduced a new tactic I think we should fully adopt.' Gibson: 'Really?' Mack: turns to the football team 'Run it.'" (Part 11)

  • Daria Dots Her Is, by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "'Daria, I'd like to talk to you about a number of bizarre typos in your paper.' 'I don't think you can call them typos if I wrote it out by hand,' Daria pointed out. Mr. O'Neill nervously chuckled and pressed on. 'Daria, I think the problem is that you're not crossing your Ts.' A terrified look suddenly showed up on Daria's face. 'I...I can't!'"

  • A Distant Lawndale, by Arena del Sur (part 6): "–Daria, are you feeling ok? –said Jane, worried. –Are you kidding? This is so baroque. What the hell, this is so renaissance. Oh, if only you were here, Jane. I totally forgot that I've never smoked anything in my life and that I was only 17. And had the lungs of a non-smoker 17 years old girl, too. I got stoned immediately."

  • Dylan, by J-D (part 2a): "'You don’t have to actually walk with me, Dylan. Actually, you should get a bit further ahead. That way, I can still keep an eye on you, but we’re not being seen actually together.' 'I don’t want to be together with you, Kris. Don’t you get that yet? Origin point, home. Same. Destination point, school. Same. Shortest route? Same. If you can’t follow that, I don’t know how you hope to pass mathematics.'"

  • John Lane 52: From the Last Step to the First, by RLobinske (COMPLETE!): "With everything packed and ready to go downstairs, John's room looked and felt empty as he prepared for bed. Beyond a change of clothes and an overnight bag, the only things left in his room were those slated to stay behind. Or, stay behind until they could be moved to Boston. John turned out the light and climbed into bed. Thinking back over the last three years, John looked around the moonlit room. Things have really changed since that first day I saw Daria. And overall, I have to think that it has been a change for the better."

  • Lawndale and Sandi Griffin’s Genie (Chapter 6), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 7): "When they got back to the Morgendorffer’s house, another car was parked at the kerb. 'My Mom’s here!' Stacy said. 'Is that bad?' Daria asked. 'I just wasn’t expecting it is all,' Stacy said, slightly panicked. 'There may be something there,' Daria thought. She didn’t want to get involved, but she didn’t want to ignore it either. She could use Stacy’s help in the genie/emerald situation."

  • Memory Lane, by echopapa (part 3): "Jane was dumbfounded. The room looked exactly the way it was when she was in high school. 'I hope this meets with your satisfaction, this room seemed to feature prominently in your memories. Bruce, we can enter now.' Suddenly, a metal arch with a double door appeared along one of the walls, replacing the window. The doors slid apart with a rumble and a whine, and two men entered the room."

  • The Milk Run, by oni (COMPLETE!): "'Hey kiddo,' he exclaimed in a cheerful mood. 'You want go with your old dad to the store for some milk?' She was about to open her mouth and say ‘no thanks’, but another voice inside her said ‘why not?’ Thinking further, she remembered that her sister and the rest of the fashion club were having their Blushathon. That decided it. 'Sure dad, I’ll go with you to the store.'"

  • My Night At Daria DeMartino's (IC: DeMartino and Jake swapped), by Vukodlak (COMPLETE!): "Crap its stuck Tom thought as he struggled to get the door open. He breathed a sigh of relief when the door finally moved. His relief was short lived when a hand slamed it back shut after opening less then an inch. 'Hello Tom.' Anthony growled."

  • Sandi :: Well... This Sucks :: Chapter 10, by Fhujeth_x (COMPLETE!): "A loud crash, as if the tool shed had collapsed was heard from inside the house. It was a loud noise, kind of a shocker, really. All four people inside the house looked in the direction of the backyard as the arguments stopped and confusion glanced over them. "Dammit Tom." Linda glared at her husband, 'I told you before that we should have had that tool shed torn down.'" (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Thanksgiving with the Griffins, by Fhujeth_x (parts 1 and 2): "Shuddering at the thought of her Uncle's body odor, Sandi picked up the perfume and took a deep breath, preparing to embark in the horribleness that was; Thanksgiving with the Griffins." (Part 2)

  • To Annoy a Mockingbird. Chapter 03, by BF110C4 (parts 2 and 3): "Daria herself was just half listening the tour itself, she was still angry with the way her parents ignored her research she did of the different universities, both regional and national, and her plans for Vance. For the first time in years she had been pouring actual effort in a school related issue and the end result was an united front between her father, her sister and her mother against her wishes." (Part 3)

  • The Wrath Universe Ch. 1 New Life, Old Life, by ST91 (parts 4 and 5): "'Well, to be honest we have something similar at Lawndale High.' 'What ?! Really ?!' 'Yes, but don’t worry. I’ve got something different in mind for you.' 'You want to go directly to brainwashing ?' joked Daria." (Part 5)

  • Unnamed story (IRON CHEF: "...And that's how your dad and I got together."), by misericordia (COMPLETE!): "Jake squeezed Daria's hand. 'I can't tell you much it means to me that you came here tonight, Daria.' Daria squeezed back. 'Knock'em dead, Big Jake.'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes That Should Be: Breakfast of Zombie Champions), by RLobinske (COMPLETE!): "Standing on the sidewalk of a London street, Daria checked the address on her smartphone and looked back up at the office building. 'This is the place.' Going inside, she thought, Public relations. I never pictured myself going into public relations. At least I'm working for a charity and not some sleazy corporation. And, I get to live in London. I have to admit that is a bonus."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes That Should Be: Breakfast of Zombie Champions), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "'Have you ever done that hot yoga?' Sandi asked. 'I tried it this weekend. There's a place at Cranberry Commons where you do yoga in a room heated to 130 degrees. It's great.' 'That's what I hear,' Quinn said. 'But you have to drink lots of women,' Stacy said. 'I mean water! I mean drink lots of water!'"

  • Vealed With a Kick (Pie, Pie, My Darling), by Smijey (COMPLETE!): "Daria walked up to the door of Kevin's house, a tray of cookies in her hand. She was thinking about how Kevin would be reduced to jelly by her revenge plan, and then began thinking about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. She rang the buzzer and put on her biggest, scariest grin."

  • What is Fashion?, by Smijey (part 1): "The other Fashion Clubbers crowded around their fallen leader. 'Sandi, are you okay?' Quinn asked. a concerned look on her face. Cautiously, Sandi nodded. 'I think so. Ohhh, my head hurts.' A worried look crossed Stacy's face. 'You don't have amnesia, do you, Sandi?' Sandi rolled her eyes. 'No, Stacy, don't be ridiculous. I'm still Sandi Griffin, President of the...' A frown graced Sandi's face. 'I'm President of the...Club? It's some sort of club.'"

  • The Yowling, by misericordia (COMPLETE!): "Her first attacker span her around, almost knocking her off feet. Britanny grabbed a tree branch for support, then snapped it off to use as a weapon. Her blood surged fiercely, almost joyfully. If she couldn't run, she could still fight - and that was something she knew how to do. She backed against a tree and yelled wildly. 'Come and get me! Come and get me, you b-'" (Part 2) (Part 3)

An Apple a Day Won't Keep the QB Away!

Today is Johnny Appleseed Day! Kevin's getting into the spirit, although he's probably just as likely to plant jelly beans as apple seeds. Whatever keeps him out of trouble, I suppose.

Anyway, have an apple and check out the latest fanfic update!

  • Daria/Dorian Ch. 13: Paper Towels and Open Flames Don't Mix, by LadieT (COMPLETE!): "After Quinn and Jane fell asleep, Daria got Dorian's attention. Let's go pay the front desk another visit. He asked for a second print-out of the room's bill. The only charge that was on it was the pizza he and Jane had ordered that afternoon. Get mom - that jerk's going down."

  • The Death of Jane Lane (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Damn The Torpedoes!), by Chris Tucker (COMPLETE!): "Now, the actual accident itself, well, there were lots of unanswered questions. Number one was, where the HELL does a stretched SMARTCar full of CLOWNS come from and how the hell did it wind up on the Boston Common, speeding wildly on the footpaths, dozens of brightly clothed arms sticking out of the windows, frantically beeping their little clown horns in a futile effort to warn the girl directly in the path of the out of control car."

  • Different Circumstances (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Damn The Torpedoes!), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "There was no way out of that knot. It seemed that he and Jane were no longer an item. Jane fled to some kind of art commune. He was left with Daria, who was feeling major guilt for hurting her best friend. Tom didn't know how it would turn out. It was then that he got a text message from Jane. Tom you basterd. I shouldn't be writing you. This is a bad idea that drunks have and I'm drunk. Question: Do you want me back? Answer yes/no. If yes, we'll talk. If no, forget you."

  • Fugitive Chapter 8: Grunge, by Wassersauefer (part 2): "He should have been afraid of losing his humanity, he knew that. But he felt nothing anymore, just the urge to lay down and go to sleep without ever waking ever up. That way he would not have to bother with anything anymore. Not the fact that he was in prison, not the loneliness, not the boredom, not the fucking thought that he wasn't human anymore."

  • The Future We Choose/Anticipate, by psychotol (parts 3 and 4): "'Betty teleports in and sees if his powers work, if not, move away until you do, repeat this procedure at least twice on different vectors, once we have the location, Quinn, I’ll direct you to hit the metajammer with an electron beam. Then we pile in, secure the place, and make off with Daria.' 'CIA will just hate that,' said Tom. 'BONUS!' they all chorused." (Part 4)

  • Life After Highland (Iron Chef: Lawndale State), by LadieT (part 21): "'Brittany,' Jane sighed. 'You have nothing to apologize for. You weren't the person who opened their big mouths in front of the entire student body in the cafeteria. You were just that bitch's best friend.' 'Who didn't speak to her for a couple of months afterwords. You weren't the only one mad at her, Jane.'"

  • Mad Dog's Legacy Chapter 4: angst.lawndale.com, by Hyrin (COMPLETE!): "'SHUT UP!' she screamed at her parents. Taken aback, they froze with no idea of how to react. 'This is all YOUR FAULT! I've lost my boyfriend, any respect I had at school, and I can’t even look myself in the mirror anymore! And why? Because I was trying to live up to your expectations! "You have to date the perfect black boy, Jodie." "You have to be the best at everything, Jodie." "You have to never lose anything, or you'll disappoint us, Jodie." Well, that’s over! I have given you two everything I’ve got, and now it’s cost me EVERYTHING!'" (Part 5) (Part 6)

  • Maw of Darkness (Pie, Pie, My Darling), by Smijey: "'You see, the girl fell asleep and nobody knew she was there. Otherwise, I doubt if they would've entombed her. When she woke up and found the door unresponsive, she was at least comforted by the fact that she was surrounded by food...until she realized there was no can opener. Then it dawned on her --' Daria interrupted Jane. 'Then it dawned on her she could chew the cans open!' she said, uncharacteristically peppy. 'After all, the human jaw exerts enough pressure to break bones, so a little tin shouldn't be any trouble whatsoever!'"

  • Raft College: The First Year, by rglovejoy (part 43): "Daria noted Jane's look of annoyance. Could it be that she is resentful that I brought Sam along? she wondered. The rest of the bus ride went quietly, with Jane catching Daria up on the comings and goings of Lawndale."

  • Screams of Silence, by Jim North: "I hit the double doors at a dead run, then bounce off and fall to the ground, stunned. Another heavy scrape coming in my direction gets me back up and on my feet. Pain is temporary. That thing is something else. Suffering and misery and agonizing torture and I have to get out and I have to get out now."

  • Slashers (Iron Chef: Guilty Pleasures Redux), by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): "Daria sat in a dark room typing furiously at her computer, the only illumination the glow of the monitor where it reflected in her glasses. Almost there, she thought. Just a little more..."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Addicted to "being special"), by DIsaac (COMPLETE!): ""Hello, Charlie" "Yea, It's Jodie Landon....." "No, Your lawyer, Charlie!" "I'm not your new goddess, I'M YOUR NEW ATTORNEY! Dammit! OK, breath Jodie, breath.""

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Damn The Torpedoes!), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): "The skin on her face is stretched out, pulled tight by the hooks and the elastic bands that they are each tied to. Two of them are tearing the skin that they are in, but she can barely tell which two through the pain. Everything has become this pain. Even the chafing of the bands tightly binding her wrists and ankles have ceased to be a concern in the face of this white hot inferno of pure agony."

  • Why I Quit Eating Sweets - My Brain Fries Itself (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Damn The Torpedoes!), by LadieT (COMPLETE!): "The Justice-of-the-Peace closed her eyes for a moment before continuing on to the vows part of the ceremony. 'Do you Daria Morgendorffer take Anthony DeMartino to be your lawfully wedded husband?'"

  • Wrong Turn....At Sesame Street, by peapotmaster (part 1): "Daria Morgendorffer woke up on a Friday morning in her bedroom, only to hear a very familiar song playing in the background. 'What the...' Daria began to speak, when she spotted a little red monster walk up to her. 'Daria, it’s time to start the show,' said the red monster. 'Elmo is here now.'"

An Apple a Day....

It is hoped the fandom won't mind if I clip some items from last year's posts, as they are exactly what I was going to say today. Today is the 235th anniversary of the birth of John Chapman, a.k.a. Johnny Appleseed. He used to be just a wandering religious apple-planter, and now he's an environmentalist. Kevin does a good imitation of him at left.

Exactly 40 years ago this day, the Beatles' last studio album, Abbey Road, was released in the UK. Fanfic writer Jill Friedman (LeopardLady) wrote a tale about Penny Lane's best friend, who happened to be named Abby Rhode. Ms. Friedman got Penny Lane's age exactly right, too, and even did a sequel. Penny Lane herself was named for a song on the Magical Mystery Tour album from two years earlier.

The Daria/Abbey Road connection doesn't end there. View Kemical Reaxion's artwork (featuring Mystik Spiral) for a story by jak981125 called "Shabby Road," or read Canadibrit's "Rue Brittania," from TLAS, in which Mystik Spiral re-enacts the scene on the cover of Abbey Road, in the same manner in which Kem drew it. (This story was novelized by Austin Loomis.) That's a lot of Daria mileage to get out of one album!

Only 142 years ago, famed cartoonist Windsor McCay was born. See if you can remember his most famous creation, part of whose name is also part of the name of a famed Daria fanfic writer.

T. S. Eliot, whom I am overly fond of quoting in my Daria fanfics, was born 121 years ago today, too. His words appear in "After the End," "Always Beside You," "April Is the Cruelest Month," "Die! Die! You Bastard!" "Deus Jane," "Drive," and "One More River to Cross," at least. Gregor Samsa outdid me, however, when he wrote two excellent parodies of Eliot's work: "The Love Song of Jake Alfred Morgendorffer" and "The Waste La(w)nd." I was properly humbled.

At Holiday Island High School, today is European Day of Languages. He's the Eurotrash kid who never speaks English because it is beneath him.

In fanficland, today is the 12th anniversary of the day 12-year-old Daria Morgendorffer was found alive after she disappeared at Camp Grizzly, per "Who Once Was Lost."

Most importantly, this is the 26th anniversary of the moment when a minor Soviet military officer saved the Earth. His story is worth reading, though you probably haven't heard it before. If you see him, remember to tell him, "Thank you."

Finally, of least importance, today is Bureflux. Celebrate it as you see fit. Fnord.

  • Pinkminx has completed her version of Jane Lane from "Love Is a Series of Burning Sensations" (with the glue gun that started the whole mess). Excellent!
  • Pinhead did a remarkable illo for E. A. Smith's "The Tempest," showing the funeral scene. More excellence!
  • Roentgen offers artistic support for Daria/Brittany 'shippers, taken from episodes in the series.

  • Falling into College 70: Is It the Future Yet? by Richard Lobinske (COMPLETE!): "Lt. Col. Wyatt. Our investigation found no official records of other coalition aircraft in the area. You've been exonerated." "Then whose aircraft did I shoot down?" "I'm sure you understand that we don't need any unnecessary international incidents."
  • Finn Morgendorffer, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 2 COMPLETE!): Finn idolized his aunt Rita, and that relationship mystified Helen to no end. Rita, her older sister, was her mother’s favored child, and Rita often got special favors from her, like having her first wedding paid, and fancy vacations for Rita’s daughter Erin. What Helen’s mother, and Finn, saw in Rita could not be explained. Rita was vacuous, trite, dilettantish, and a whole slew of other names Helen wouldn’t utter in public. She never held a job, and flitted from boyfriend to boyfriend, all men with money.
  • Finn Morgendorffer, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 3 COMPLETE!): Brittany Taylor’s party was going to be the first one of the season, and, just like at the first day of school, Finn wanted to aim high. There would probably be many other cheerleaders at the party, many other cheerleaders. Brittany seemed to be a very bubbly, energetic person, maybe cheer captain. It would make sense that this would be a rather big party. This only gave him more reason to make an entrance there.
  • M4: (Don't Turn Your Back on) The City, by Silver (interlude): "Look, I understand you'd like something greater than Lawndale, Quinn. But I was born here. So were Tiffany and Sandi. We grew up here. Yeah, we'd like to go somewhere better with our lives, but even so, we're still here in Lawndale as far as our spirits go." Stacy took a deep breath, getting herself back under control.
  • Reusably Complex, by Ajar (Part 5): “Well, I couldn't help but notice that you have Jane over and the last time you elected to have her over here as opposed to you going over there she was having family issues.” “Actually, I was considering telling you. I'm kind of scared. Jane seems to be having delusions.” “What kind of delusions?” “Well, that for the past year or so that I've had a boyfriend that I stole from her.”
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part III), by jtranser (continued): Flanking Stacy on the right and the left were specially trained mutant emperor penguins who escorted her up the steps to the awaiting dignitaries, and a giant panda mime which worked the crowd till she raised her hand for silence. Above her head hovered a giant pink and white polyhedron which gave the appearance of breathing. Stacy raised her hand and all fell silent.
  • Tales of the Ringbearers: A New Ringbearer, by Aloysius (Part 1): “May I join you?” Tony looked up into the face of Gerald W. Wright - the senior Ringbearer known as Archangel—and jumped to his feet quickly. “Relax, Tony!” Archangel said and held up his left hand. “This isn’t the Marine Corps.”
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Single Parent Jake), by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): "Daria?" "Quinn." "Mom's... m-mom's dead, Daria. There was a car wreck, and...."

Kevin Appleseed, American Hero

Today is the 234th anniversary of the birth of John Chapman, a.k.a. Johnny Appleseed. He used to be just a wandering religious apple-planter, and now he's an environmentalist.

Only 141 years ago, famed cartoonist Windsor McCay was born. See if you can remember his most famous creation, part of whose name is also part of the name of a famed Daria fanfic writer.

And T. S. Eliot, whom I am overly fond of quoting in my Daria fanfics, was born 120 years ago today, too. His words appear in "After the End," "Always Beside You," "April Is the Cruelest Month," "Die! Die! You Bastard!" "Deus Jane," "Drive," and "One More River to Cross," at least.

Most importantly, today is also the 25th anniversary of the moment when a minor Soviet military officer saved the Earth. His story is worth reading, though you probably haven't heard it before. If you see him, remember to tell him, "Thank you."
