With heat waves in the news, this seems like an appropriate time to mention that it was on this day in 1913 that Death Valley reached a record high of 134 degrees Fahrenheit (56.7 degrees Celsius). I'm not sure if that's any comfort to those of you suffering through the worst of the summer heat right now, but at least you can tell yourself it could be worse.
