Random Gnuz

Daria and Jane made a brief appearance on MTV twelve years ago, during the MTV Video Music Awards. They were watching the show but were unimpressed. Let's hope MTV includes that bit on the DVDs anyway.

An interesting look at Daria appears on a blog by the person who we in this fandom know as Medea42. Excellent essay, worth reading.

Lorenzo Sauchelli is considering some changes at Dariaverse.com. Read and see what's in store.

SPECIAL ALERT! Well, if you're really into Daria, I guess. While trying to locate an old image of Daria, I stumbled across an enormous index of images and other things for a long-extinct Daria fansite belonging to Wildgoose. He wrote a lot of fanfic, and he also obsessively copied images from very old versions of MTV's Daria site, including stuff I've never seen before (like the line-art sketch of Halloween and a book you haven't yet read). I am copying off images as fast as I can. Dig in if you're interested!

And now the fanfic.

  • John Lane 42: Legally Halloween, by Richard Lobinske (COMPLETE!): "Let's go," Helen said, rounding up her family. "What's the hurry?" Jake asked. "Half the partners are drunk and sometimes it's best not to see them at their worst," she explained. "That way they don't have to worry about if you saw something that can be used against them later." (FF.net)

New Daria Fansite Coming?

Lorenzo Sauchelli, prolific fanfic author and true-blue fan, has announced on PPMB that he's considering the start of a new Daria fan website called Dariaverse. Actually, he's already got the website started but needs advice on content and features. Any ideas? Click here to get to the thread, and add all the advice you can muster.

The content issue came to my mind several times in the past, wondering what a new Daria website might offer, but I never successfully resolved it. This blog is really just a bunch of mental misfirings, whatever happens to go through my head on a certain day. There are very few other Daria blogs that I know of, but their content is quite different from this one (discussing the show in other countries and languages, in-depth insightful essays, etc.). Attitude always helps. Someone with strong opinions about the show could surely create a popular (or infamous, or both) site. It's happened before.

A new fansite could specialize in its direction, too, such as collecting only fanfic that is post-IICY?, or fanfic and art about the Fashion Club. I don't know if a new art website would go over, as deviantART seems to have gobbled up the market for fan artists, but who knows.

What do you think a new Daria site could offer?

Just Checked Out from the Library

Roentgen, Brother Grimace, Quiverwing, Legendeld, Doggieboy, Scissors MacGillicutty, and others have been updating and adding new stuff to the DariaWiki of late. Among the webpages that struck my interest were the following, either new or newly expanded. See what you think.

Among blogs of potential interest is Brother Grimace's The Cathedral of Snark and Stuff, which has some Daria commentary among his other musings. (See his good news, too. You go, Bro!)

Who?

While surfing around, I discovered a very interesting post on a cartoon-oriented blog. Read what Geena Davis had to say about female characters in cartoons, then try to find Our Heroine's name in the numerous blog responses without using the search function.

No wonder OH is sulking in a box in the backyard. Fame is such a fleeting thing.

This Is Only a Test

To the right is the crowd scene in the Lawndale High gymnasium in "Daria!" Name as many students as you can.

When you get done with that, you might take a look at this blog entry and see what you think of it. It's in a blog called Networked Public Culture: Art and Life in the Age of Social Networking (ahem!) and discusses Fan & Slash Fiction. Daria is not mentioned, but a wide range of other fandoms is noted. Any thoughts on this? Kinda interesting.

(Frodo/Sam slash fic, eww.)

LATE ADD: Alert fan NomadX has pointed out on SFMB that e-Bay has an interesting new t-shirt for sale. See this link right here for more.

Bitz 'n Pieces

An interesting (and recent) blog entry surfaced on the search engines yesterday: Musings for Amusement: Daria. Her comments are interesting and relevant.

Time has been short for adding multiple entries lately. More links are being added, and a new link section (Daria on Beavis and Butt-head) is being readied, for everyone who wants to see Daria's previous incarnation on television.

Still upset that those slide shows of penguins didn't work out.

Stay tuned!
