She Still Looks Stone-Faced

Andrea looks (slightly) more stoic than usual, thanks to her impression of Abraham Lincoln on the anniversary of his birth on this day in 1809. Maybe Jodie can spend some time today telling Brittany the story of what happened to him and his wife...but very gently and using very small words.

Interestingly, scientist Charles Darwin was born on the very same day, in the same year. I'm sure Kevin will be pleased to know that "the monkey guy" is being celebrated today, thanks to his love of monkeys, although he might be disturbed to find that Darwin was not, in fact, the man in the yellow hat.

I would strongly recommend that you only observe Hug Day with willing participants. Hugging someone like Daria without permission could lead to a lawsuit or, at the very least, stomped toes.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria's narration, by redpink (part 1): "You know, I never thought I'd be the kind of person who'd find comfort in something so... tactile. But here I am, lying on Jane's bed, my stomach resting against hers like we're puzzle pieces that finally clicked."

  • I (Don't) Want to Be a Part of It, by ladyevil (part 13): "'You’re Quinn, right?' Quinn turned to see a blonde, middle aged woman in a blouse that was five years out of fashion."

  • Ow, What a Night!, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Quinn sat at the bar with Angie and her friends, and she was not having a good time due to being the only 43-year-old in a club full of twenty-somethings." (Part 3)

  • Scitech Day, by redpink (part 1): "Jane's room is dim except for the soft glow of the lamp on her nightstand."

  • Spider Quinn 20 The Imitation Tempest, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 4): "SpiderGirl looked out over the town from the top of the theater as she usually did. ‘Something feels off,’ she thought. ‘It’s not like the usual feeling when looking over the town,’ she thought."

I Guess She Couldn't Find Any Black Ones?

Andrea has chosen an appropriate accessory for Umbrella Day, but it might be more useful if she waited until it was raining. Rain or shine, snow or heat, I hope you stay protected from whatever the weather may bring you today!

I don't think an umbrella will be enough, however, if life decides to throw aliens your way. Fortunately, it's also Extraterrestrial Culture Day and you can take the opportunity to learn more about the otherworldly beings. Just think of the attention you'll get at the next UFO convention! Mostly unwanted, I'm afraid.

If you're geeky but not, like, Artie geeky, then you could celebrate Clean out Your Computer Day instead. If you need assistance, you could ask Jake to draw on his days of experience at Buzzdome. On second thought, just call customer support.

She WILL Make a Dainty GarLAND for HER Head and Sing!

Quinn is giving Opera Day everything she's got, but the opera isn't over because Quinn may be singing and a lady, but she isn't..."thinly challenged." Maybe Mr. DeMartino can check out the PayDay automotive department to see if they're performing Madame Butterfly again.

I suppose he and every other male resident of Lawndale can do just about anything and still be celebrating Man Day, just by existing. This would probably be an appropriate occasion to listen to Trent sing "Manly," if indeed there is ever an appropriate occasion to listen to Trent sing.

There are few things more manly than "great big guys slamming into other great big guys," and what better way to see that than to watch Super Bowl LX, taking place later today? Just be sure to wear a print instead of cream if you go to a Super Bowl party, so as to avoid any potential dipsasters.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Broadway singers and dancers, by redpink (part 1): "The curtain rises to reveal a glowing cityscape backdrop, painted in sweeping colors. The orchestra swells with bright, hopeful chords. Daria and Jane stand center stage, hand in hand, both wearing simple but elegant costumes that shimmer under the lights."

"Monster trucks and naked models! Naked, naked, naked!"

I don't think Jane was expecting to see a room full of artists celebrating Working Naked Day, but one should never question the artistic process. I'm hoping Jake was able to find his pants so that he could celebrate Working Fully Clothed Day, because I don't think his clients would have appreciated even partial nudity.

Ted will be pleased to learn that today is Bubble Gum Day, thanks to Daria introducing him to the wonders of chewable treats. His parents will be less happy, but what they don't know won't hurt him.

For anyone with a special someone in their life, here's your warning on National Valentine Shopping Reminder Day that you'd better start looking for gifts if you're going to. I'm always happy to accept chocolate gifts if anybody's curious!

Now Those Composting Skills Will Come In Handy!

Although Helen certainly looks the part for Farmer's Day, I don't think she's going to grow very many crops with a single wheel and a chicken. Although that's more than she'll need if she lands the same gig Trent was suited for: a farmer paid not to grow crops.

Jane, on the other hand, will probably be more interested in National Girls and Women in Sports Day...as long as she doesn't have to interact with any of her teammates. Are there any track meets that consist of a single person? Because that would be perfect for her.

Meanwhile, I suspect Daria will be content to celebrate World Read Aloud Day, but maybe without the "aloud" part. She hasn't had the best luck with reading stories out loud to people, unless those stories are grisly retellings of fairy tales.

Fanfic Update!
  • Spider Quinn 20 The Imitation Tempest, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 3): "The Enigma left the facility the way she had come in. 'SpiderGirl is sure to be far away by now,' she said to herself."

Will the Angel See Her Shadow?

Quinn's hair is even bouncier than usual as she emulates the late Farrah Fawcett, who was born on this day in 1947. Fawcett was of course well-known as one of the stars of the television show Charlie's Angels, parodied on the Daria episode "Murder, She Snored."

Although their hair is less fashionable, marmots are still pretty cute and deserve to be celebrated on Groundhog Day, especially as their weather-predicting skills are apparently quite good. There aren't a lot of Groundhog Day Daria fanfics, but you can check out Observational Skills by Brother Grimace and, for a crossover with the movie, Two Wrongs Make A Right by magnuskrauss.

Just Don't Paint Too Many Reproductions!

In an interesting switch, Daria is the one celebrating Inspire Your Heart with Art Day, and Jane is acting as the inspiration instead. I hope you, too, can find inspiration in artwork, even if that means drawing a circle and a line over something with lipstick.

For those (like me) living in places currently experiencing cold weather, feel free to enjoy National Hot Chocolate Day to warm up! If you want, you can pretend to be part of a cute family of teenagers who are stranded during a hurricane.

It observe to obligated feel don't so confusing very be can that but Day Backward also is today.

Daria, P.I.

Daria's chosen a more tropical look in honor of Magnum, P.I. star Tom Selleck, who was born on this day in 1945. It's kind of a fun look for her, but I would imagine Quinn would have something to say about Daria wearing primary colors during daylight hours.

I think that Daria is likely going to change into something less colorful, though, because her personality is really better suited for Curmudgeons Day. Hey, you kids! Get off my durn locker!

Today being Freethinkers Day is also appropriate for Daria, who tended to challenge conventional wisdom. It's also appropriate for Kevin and Brittany, who tended to be free of thinking on a daily basis.

I Mean, I Love Chocolate, But....

Quinn has whipped up a real treat in honor of Chocolate Cake Day, but I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to try it. She isn't known for her cooking skills, and if she inherited her know-how from Jake then that's probably a very dangerous cake.

It might be safer to brainstorm ideas to take a break and go somewhere to relax, especially because today is also National Plan for Vacation Day. Luckily for Jake and Helen, the holiday says you only have to plan for a vacation, because we all know that they'll never actually pull themselves away from work to go anywhere.

If you want some ideas for a nice vacation spot, can I recommend Wonderland, created by Lewis Carroll? The author was born on this day in 1832, and you can find several Alice in Wonderland/Daria crossover stories here.

Fanfic Update!
  • Funky Pretty, by MoleFromTheMinistry (part 11): "So, they really did procrastinate, huh? After a long, long, long night, both Daria and Jane came to a sharp, bitter realization: they were out of ideas."

  • Through A Lens Sapphically, by Xenodroid (COMPLETE!): "Images of those horribly disfigured versions of herself slowly faded into the darkness around her as Daria gasped for breath in her room. She drank some water and rubbed her still irritated eyes, before putting her head in her hands."

It's Definitely NOT Opposite Day!

Daria and Quinn (or is it Quinn and Daria?) both appear to be celebrating Opposite Day, although I'm sure on the inside they're absolutely horrified. I expect that the Holiday Island version of this day is a total contrarian who loves to play devil's advocate.

If you're planning to go out anywhere today, be sure to check the forecast first because it's also Observe the Weather Day. The last thing you want is to be caught in a surprise hurricane, especially if you end up stranded with a football player and a cheerleader in a creaky little rooftop shack.

Let's all wish a happy Tatiana Day to Quinn's old camp friend and Tiffany predecessor, even if she wound up blowing Quinn off in the end. "Girls together," indeed.

Put Your Best Foot Forward!

Daria is all set to celebrate Measure Your Feet Day by seeing if she's still a 6 1/2 B. I just hope she keeps an eye on her boot, as she lives among known bootlace thieves.

If she decides to write down her shoe size for posterity, I hope she uses her very best penmanship because she wouldn't want to forget that day is National Handwriting Day. If you've ever seen my handwriting, you'll know that I very rarely celebrate this particular day. Thank goodness for keyboards!

Although today is National King Day, I'm not sure if it's supposed to be about monarchs or people with the name King. I suppose Kevin could celebrate by playing his version of chess: "King me! King me! King me!"

Fanfic Update!
  • Back tickles, by redpink (part 1): "The room is dimly lit, soft shadows dancing across the walls from the streetlight outside. Posters and sketches line the walls."

  • Cuddling in the principal's office, by redpink (part 1): "The office is quiet, sunlight filtering through the blinds. The faint hum of the hallway echoes beyond the door."

  • It's Harder to Throw a Rock Back, by scaryfangirl2001 (COMPLETE!): "The rhodonite glints in the muted January light, its rosy hues catching the weak sun like frozen fire. Daria's fingers tremble around the velvet box—too small to hold everything she means to say."

  • Spider Quinn 20 The Imitation Tempest, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 20): "It was an ordinary lunch time in the Lawndale High cafeteria. As ordinary as a lunch time got at Lawndale High after the Groundhog Day Attack, anyway. Quinn Morgendorffer looked at the questionable contents of the servery."

  • Through A Lens Sapphically, by Xenodroid (part 1): "Daria didn’t feel nervous as she rang the Lanes’ doorbell. Not at all. She also wasn’t minutely aware of the missing, comfortable weight of her glasses on her nose and ears, and in their place the ill-fitting contact lenses against her eyeballs… the thought still made her squeamish, as did the memory of putting them on at the opticians."

Be Sure to Come Up for Air!

Daria has become a very unwilling participant in National Hugging Day, but she should consider herself lucky. Better to be hugged by your parents than by Mr. O'Neill...especially if he's wearing a lion costume.

Jake might end the hug early, though, if he notices any fluffy-tailed rats lurking near the garbage cans. It doesn't matter that it's Squirrel Appreciation Day; the only squirrel Jake appreciates is a successfully rehomed squirrel.

Happy--or rather, bittersweet--anniversary to the movie Is It College Yet?, which aired on this day in 2002. It marked the end of the Daria series as a whole, but was a fitting way to finish the show.

How's His Maniacal Laugh?

Mack is having an absolute blast on Brew a Potion Day, and it makes you wonder what, exactly, the potion is. Is it something to stop time so Jodie can spend a few minutes with him? Will it install a "mute" button on Kevin? Or is it just a new flavor of Ultra Cola?

Whatever the case may be, you might as well sit back and enjoy the show with a tasty snack for National Popcorn Day! The Fashion Club will take theirs with no salt, no oil, no fat...and no flavor.

I just hope Daria isn't stuck in a bomb shelter for National Tin Can Day, especially if she doesn't have a can opener. But it's not like she enjoys peaches all that much, anyway.

Anyone Want a Bathtub Cocktail?

I hope no one is thinking about taking Upchuck up on his offer to help you celebrate National Bootlegger's Day, because I wouldn't trust anything produced by him--old-timey or otherwise. Both his taste and his ethics are...questionable at best.

If spicy foods are more your speed, feel free to enjoy National Hot Heads Chili Day by burning off a portion of your mouth. Jake might observe this one, although whether or not it will be intentional is anyone's guess.

Finally, let's all wish Theresa a happy Customer Service Day, although the happiest day would be not having to wait on the Fashion Club. That poor woman has definitely suffered enough.

Trading in the Pantsuits for a New Look

Helen is taking business casual to quite an extreme in order to celebrate Charo's birthday. I can only imagine how Eric is going to react, but the real question is whether this will help or hurt her chances of making partner at the firm.

Just to be safe, she should probably accessorize appropriately for National Hat Day, even if she hates the way she looks in hats. Perhaps Quinn can loan her one of the hats she tends to keep on hand as a disguise in case of sibling humiliation-related emergencies.

Kevin, meanwhile, can celebrate one of his most beloved anniversaries: the first Super Bowl was played on this day in 1951. The best part is that the Green Bay Packers won, led by one of Kevin's heroes, Vince Lombardi (who did not go to hell).

Fanfic Update!
  • Heavenly Wine and Roses, by riotsquirrrl (part 12): "Jane rings Daria’s doorbell at exactly 7:10 on the first day of school. When Daria opens the door, she steps in to give her girlfriend a kiss, and Daria feels herself blush."

  • Love and friendship, by redpink (part 1): "The soft hum of the ceiling fan mixes with the golden light filtering through the curtains. Jane is lying on her back on her bed, sketchbook tossed aside, her gaze drifting toward the ceiling."

  • Mysteries of Aurora, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 21): "'So, the Second Age is the Bronze Age,' Olivia said. 'This is when writing emerges in Aurora, although it is sporadic at first. Civilization also spread southwards through the island from the beginning of the period.'"

  • Ow, What a Night!, by wilddogjj (part 1): "Angie Thompson, Kevin and Brittany's daughter, emerged from her room. A series of unfortunate events had recently forced her to move back in with her parents (job loss, boyfriend turning out to be a psycho killer, roommate murdered by said boyfriend)."

"It's only a matter of time!"

Quinn is doing everything she can to celebrate Make Your Dream Come True Day, and by "everything" I mean she's wishing very hard but not making any actual effort to change anything. I hope your dreams come true today, unless your dreams involve the ghost of Mrs. Sullivan or funhouse mirrors or becoming your younger sister. Wow, Daria's dreams were something else.

If you believe that it takes more than wishful thinking to make dreams come true, that's both reasonable and appropriate because today is also International Skeptics Day! This one would be a good one for Daria, who tended to be skeptical of pretty much everything.

Finally, feel free to enjoy Poetry Break Day by reading some of your favorite verses, but I don't recommend inviting Quinn to join you. One can only hear "The Greasy Fry" so many times before the magic wears off.

A Very Colorful Way to Celebrate

It seems that Jane has taken National Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friends Day to a particularly artistic extreme, but I'm pretty sure she'll regret it as soon as Daria gets her hands on her. If you decide to splash one of your friends, I highly recommend sticking to ordinary water. It might save your life.

I suppose if you want to celebrate National Milk Day by splashing your friends with milk, then you could do that as well. However, bear in mind that milk is only relaxing when you drink it, like Jake did. And then it stops being relaxing as soon as you think about the cholesterol content.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Bathroom Door Opens, by redpink (part 1): "The bathroom is quiet except for the soft sound of running water filling the bathtub."

  • The best trap, by redpink (part 1): "Sunlight filters through the window blinds, casting soft golden stripes across the bedspread."

  • Breath, by redpink (part 1): "The soft hum of the outside world is muffled by the thick curtains drawn across Jane's windows."

  • Spider Quinn 19 Making the News Amidst the Storms, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "After sunset, the Enigma looked out over Lawndale from her roof. The normal appearance of the suburbia belied the tensions and changes that were happening."

Watch Out For Lightning Bolts!

Mr. DeMartino has clearly chosen to be a wrathful deity for Play God Day, which is really bad news for Kevin. If you aren't omnipotent, then you can at least pretend to be a god by writing a story using people you know in real life. "Take people you know and have them do whatever you want. I'd make them crawl, I tell you. Crawl!"

If you'd rather rise to the heavens in a more literal sense, then why not celebrate Balloon Ascension Day? As long as you make sure you go with an experienced balloonist, like Arno, and listen to him if he expresses doubts about the cumulus clouds.

On second thought, maybe just don't bother, because then you can observe Quitters Day! But now that I think about it, a real quitter wouldn't participate in Quitters Day at all. So I guess it's lose-lose no matter what?

Sweet Janey Brown

Looks like Jane has taken up a new sport for Harlem Globetrotter's Day, but I don't think she has to worry about losing any games. The Globetrotters' games tend to be a bit...one-sided.

I just hope she doesn't live up to Daria's predictions of her as an athlete, because it's also World Pass Gas Day. Apparently she can run like the wind and break wind, but can she dribble a basketball like the wind?

Meanwhile, I hope Noah Barkman is having a pleasant International Programmers’ Day, or at least that he's still employed. Having a tech startup right before the tech bubble popped is not a great long-term strategy.

Fanfic Update!
  • A Tale of Two Kitties: Not in the Syllabus, by SSuperNovaCO (part 2): "'Ow, my tail!' Daria exclaimed as much as she could in her dull tone. 'My whiskers! You’re stepping on my whiskers, mroooow!' Brittany complained."

This Holiday is For the Birds

Helen and Jake seem to be enjoying National Bird Day, though I can't imagine why. Still, better to just leave them to it. If nothing else, at least Helen is taking a break from the firm for once.

I'd like to wish a happy National Screenwriters Day to the Daria writing staff for providing me and the rest of fandom for lots of fun and plenty of laughs throughout the course of the show. Whatever you're doing now, know that we appreciate your work!

Zzzzzzzz....

I would wish Trent a happy Festival of Sleep Day but I think he's going to sleep straight through it. For those in fandom who are awake, feel free to take a nap guilt-free!

In fact, going to sleep might be a safe bet because if you're sleeping then you won't have to suffer embarrassment on Humiliation Day. Unless you fall asleep in public, that is.

For those who would rather stay awake, you could celebrate JRR Tolkien Day by reading The Lord of the Rings. You could also make a candle shaped like a hobbit, but then you'd run the risk of celebrating Humiliation Day if it comes out looking like a misshapen lump of wax like Jake's did.

Could Someone Turn Down the...Everything?

I'm thinking Daria may have overindulged last night when celebrating the New Year, and by "overindulged" I mean "stayed up late reading a book or watching 'Sick, Sad World.'" Hopefully a bit of uninterrupted rest will help, but that's hard to come by with Daria's luck.

If you overindulged in the area of alcoholic beverages, then I wish you a very happy National Hangover Day! Sorry, I'll try to keep my voice down.

In the spirit of unity, I'll also share that today is Global Family Day, but don't tell Daria that. She has enough headaches with her immediate family without dragging the rest of the world into it.
