A Fish For the Rest of Us!

Mack looks pretty proud of his catch, but he's got a long way to go before he beats the awesome size of the first live coelacanth, which was caught on this day in 1938. Now that is a big fish story!

It's a little cold right now for anything but ice fishing, but perhaps we could celebrate Festivus instead! If you don't have any grievances to air then I envy you, but I also recommend you celebrate by reading Bettie and Jack at Festivus by Gene.

Fanfic Update!
  • Sloane Trauma: The Next Generation (Scenes no Daria fanfic Should Have: How did We survive?), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'Mason, what is wrong with you?' Lillyanne asked as she entered the dining room of Sloane Manor."

  • Spider Quinn 13 Aftermath and Investigations, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 6): "The Enigma arrived at the Strawberry and started using the telescopes. Soon, she saw something. She recognised it straight away."

Something Fishy is Going On

Daria's having a pretty bad day, but it should come as some comfort to know that she's helping to recreate the catching of the first live coelacanth, which happened on this day in 1938. Okay, it's probably not very comforting, especially because it probably isn't historically accurate. I mean, who would bait a hook with a sarcastic teenager?

I hope she at least feels free to air her grievances, because it's Festivus and that's one of the main traditions of the day! Also for some reason putting up a metal pole, but I think the airing of grievances is more relevant right now.

A Fish Dinner for Festivus!

Just 71 years ago today, the first live coelacanth (SEE lah kanth) was caught off the coast of South Africa. That makes today a Geek Holiday. The fish Mack caught is blue like coelacanths usually are. Do you know only one Daria fanfic even mentions coelacanths? Dang!

Today is also FESTIVUS, FOR THE REST OF US! And it is HumanLight, the winter holiday for secular humanists. Not as much fun as Festivus, I'll wager. Enjoy your Festivus card. And the only Daria story about Festivus.

The astrological sign of Capricorn began yesterday or the day before, so Jake Morgendorffer (per The Daria Diaries) was born sometime between then and mid-January. (Wonder if he got slighted presents for being born near Christmas.) Amy is also reported by some to be a Capricorn, not sure why. Maybe you know.

Capricorn is a constellation that dates back at least 5,000 years. Its origins might be connected with legends of a fish-man named Oannes, who taught the Babylonians (Sumerians, really) civilized behavior. It has been suggested by Carl Sagan that Oannes was an alien being, but it is also conjectured that the mythic creature represents the human sighting of a brilliant supernova 11,000 years ago, whose remains are now known as the Vela Supernova Remnant.

The One That Did Not Get Away

Exactly 70 years ago today, the first live coelacanth was caught off the coast of South Africa, where it was summertime (southern hemisphere, remember).

Today is HumanLight, the wintertime holiday for secular humanists. If you are one of them, party on.

Most importantly, however, today is FESTIVUS, FOR THE REST OF US!

Only I have no images from Daria to mark that occasion, which is why I used Mack and the fish instead. So it goes. Enjoy anyway.

Hey, here's an idea: Can anyone create a quickie Festivus pic for Daria? I might do this for fun.
