This Blog Post Sucks

It was on this day, according to This Book Sucks, that Daria submitted an assignment for Human Sciences class consisting of an interview with Beavis and Butt-head. The interview focused on urban legends, perhaps making it a prequel to the Daria episode "Legends of the Mall." But probably not.

Also, happy birthday to the late philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, born on this day in 1844. One of his famous quotes, "That which does not kill us makes us stronger," was repeated by Daria in "The Invitation" to comfort Brittany over the wet lunch trays.

Fanfic Update!
  • Action Stories #5: When it Rains, it Pours, by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): "'I wish you weren't leaving,' Jane said. 'Yeah, me too,' Rayne said. 'But I'll be back, I promise. I need to do this.'"

  • Behind the Counter, by NightGoblyn (part 14): "'Tha . . . hey, wait a minute,' Daria said, slapping one hand down on the corner of the bag before the man could take it. 'This is Canadian money.'"

  • Falling Away From Me, by Sailor Pluto (part 1): "If someone had to put it nicely, Highland was, Highland was, okay so there was no way of putting it nicely because Highland was basically a shithole of a town which made a person wonder how anyone could possibly live there."

  • Mind Games (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: The Madness Sets In), by Snow-Kitty (part 1): "'Mr. DeMartino, I think you have something stuck to your ... um ... butt,' Jane said, pointing to the tall, lanky man's behind."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef : MMORPG, Lawndale style), by Waylander (part 4): "Tom Sloane started to suspect that his soon-to-be-former best friends Pat Seven and Terry Wicklemore were a part of Fielding's criminal underworld. That was the only explanation of his latest bout of stupidity."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: The Madness Sets In), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "'All right, Quinn,' Mrs. Barch said, as she handed the redhead a pistol, 'It's time for your final test - to see if you've renounced the ways of women acting solely to please men.'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: The Madness Sets In), by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): "'So, um,' Timothy O'Neill paused to glance at his seating chart. 'Bob? Would you like to tell me about what we just read?'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: The Madness Sets In), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "'...I made a bad decision regarding drinking,' Tom said, 'That decision almost cost me my life. However, the scandalous accusations surrounding that event never happened. I completely deny them.'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: The Madness Sets In), by Silver (COMPLETE!): "The pain throbbing through the back of his skull was almost blinding, easily holding its own with the aches and pains the rest of his body was emitting. The fact he could remember how he'd ended up cracked over the skull to end up unconscious on his back in one of Lawndale's less pleasant alleys wasn't helping."

  • Up In Smoke, by Princess_Pasta (part 4): "Laughter rose up around the small comedy club as Jane stood on stage, smiling radiantly. Quinn watched her, clapping politely but never smiling. Seeing her there only reminded Quinn of what was going on inside of her."

Daria a Saint? She Ain't.

This is the feast day for Saint Joan of Arc, a teenager who had to go through a terrible lot of trouble just to be made a saint. Daria and Beavis provide a reenactment of Ms. Arc's demise several hundred years ago. A sad story it is.

On the brighter side, this is the 102nd birthday anniversary of Mel Blanc, who was the voice actor for so many Warner Brothers cartoons. You rule, dude.

SPECIAL BULLETIN: We bring you "An Open Letter to Heidi Montag from Quinn Morgendorffer," courtesy of Jezebel.com. Be warned that some of the links on that webpage are NSFW and NSF anything else, but the article was too good to pass up.

  • The Dream of the White Darkness, by jtranser (continued): As Daria walked out to the exit porch, she saw the new signs posted on the wall. The Authority had declared a State of Emergency at the Labs, and listed its rights derived therefrom: "The Authority has the right and duty to question and demand answers. It may arrest and detain persons whose behavior gives reasonable grounds for such actions. Such persons are to be detained for a period to be determined by The Authority and may or may not be released at the discretion of The Authority. The Authority may establish cordons and curfews requiring persons to stay indoors and not leave without a required permit issued by The Authority. The Authority expects you to have a good day. And it will be checking to see that you do."
  • Morgendorffer, by Lord Akiyama (Part 1): "Rise and shine, Miss Morgendorffer," the first maid managed to say in a sleepy tone. She rocked the other's shoulder back and forth repeatedly until she finally stirred. "It's another beautiful day for her highness to abuse her social status upon by spending more than her given allowance on clothes and eying pathetic suitors for her to manipulate in the evening." (Daria/Blackadder)
  • Raft College: The First Year, by rglovejoy (Part 1): Daria Morgendorffer took a sip of water from the plastic bottle. It was important to keep oneself hydrated during a flight, she thought. She'd read about all of the things that can go wrong while flying. For instance, Deep Vein Thrombosis.

A Fish Dinner for Festivus!

Just 71 years ago today, the first live coelacanth (SEE lah kanth) was caught off the coast of South Africa. That makes today a Geek Holiday. The fish Mack caught is blue like coelacanths usually are. Do you know only one Daria fanfic even mentions coelacanths? Dang!

Today is also FESTIVUS, FOR THE REST OF US! And it is HumanLight, the winter holiday for secular humanists. Not as much fun as Festivus, I'll wager. Enjoy your Festivus card. And the only Daria story about Festivus.

The astrological sign of Capricorn began yesterday or the day before, so Jake Morgendorffer (per The Daria Diaries) was born sometime between then and mid-January. (Wonder if he got slighted presents for being born near Christmas.) Amy is also reported by some to be a Capricorn, not sure why. Maybe you know.

Capricorn is a constellation that dates back at least 5,000 years. Its origins might be connected with legends of a fish-man named Oannes, who taught the Babylonians (Sumerians, really) civilized behavior. It has been suggested by Carl Sagan that Oannes was an alien being, but it is also conjectured that the mythic creature represents the human sighting of a brilliant supernova 11,000 years ago, whose remains are now known as the Vela Supernova Remnant.

Another fanfic roundup soon....

Let's Celebrate National Nachos Day!

Various Internet sources inform us that today is National Nachos Day. It is a fact that Daria is not known in canon to eat nachos, though her very close and special friends Beavis and Butt-head ate them constantly. Above is their recipe for Nuclear Nachos from one of their books. (Click on the image to enlarge it.) These guys sure know how to have a good time.

I just received news that two long-time webrings, the Daria Webring and the Other Daria Webring, have been merged into one. If you have a Daria site and would like to join, please do.

I Always Cry at Weddings

A mere 28 years ago, Beavis and Butt-head... no, sorry, I meant Lady Diana and Prince Charles got royally hooked up. I mention this only because of the awesome B&B image at right from This Book Sucks. Today is also NASA's 51st birthday. Life goes by so fast.

Moar eventually.

  • Daylight: Falling from Grace: I Should Have Been Home Yesterday, by Disco316 (COMPLETE!): That was five years ago, when the government was in chaos. Now, that chaos had been mostly calmed, and President Senerchia’s forces depended on Burt’s forge to keep their horses shod and their sabers sharp.
  • The End of Resistance, by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): She awoke in darkness with the knowledge that she was not alone. With deliberate slowness she sat up and pulled the sheet off of her legs. They had finally come. That knowledge came with a surprising and almost palpable sense of relief. A bitter little smile twisted her lips and for the first time in what felt like a century she spoke in her mother tongue. "So you've found me."
  • Falling into College 69: Two Intents, by Richard Lobinske (Part 2): "He served his sentence, there's nothing I can do about it except make sure that the probation stipulation that he have absolutely no contact with Daria or us is rigidly enforced." "But what if he doesn't?" "He'd better hope that I don't find him first."
  • Iron Chef: Daria Is Raven's Apprentice, by Project Pegasus (continued): "Friend Raven, I have been to the fourth wall mail slot and have returned with the comments on our thread." "Hand ‘em over." "No! We’ll answer them together." "But I like opening your mail!"
  • Legion of Lawndale Heroes Gold Team, by Roentgen (Part 6): For Tom, the trip was forever. There was simply too much racing through his head. He was worried about leaving Daria behind, but he just had to know more about Edmund and Edmund's new friends.
  • Rolling the Dice, by Ajar (Part 2): “You don't want to investigate the source of the screaming?” said Jane. “Why would I want to do that?” Sandi asked. “So I can discover what horrible thing scared this person?” [Just so you know, this story is NOT my fault!]
  • Silvered, by Tscroggs (fragment): Everything was going great, until Quinn froze completely in the middle of both step and sentence. “Wha…” Stacy began, before Daria’s arm shooting up stopped her. Stacy had to bite back a sound as almost eight men she had never seen before came out of the alley in front of them.
  • Unnamed story (Second Coming of the New Ideas Thread), by Trscroggs (Part 1): “Well this is a shock. I take a meditation break and decide to investigate an open contract pulse. And what do I discover but a young lady who’s just used the contract phase to delay her own death.”
  • Vigilante, by Lorenzo Sauchelli (Part 3): She opened her notebook and started speed-reading her notes, then replied. “The supposed bullies and the friends are the same people. According to them, she was the one that came with the nicknames.”

National Nachos Day!

No kidding, this is really (according to some mythologies) National Nachos Day. In honor of this event, Daria's very special friends Beavis and Butt-head offer their recipe for secret Nuclear Nachos. (Click on the image to enlarge it.) Make some for your family!

More shortly. Have some nachos while you wait. Latest entry on DariaWiki: Secret History (needs more non-TAG story examples).
