It's Kind of Complicated

Welcome to May Day, the spring festival day that celebrates pretty much everything. In the U.S. this is also Law Day (with a nod to Helen Morgendorffer), Loyalty Day (with a nod to Ms. Angela Li), Join Hands Day (fraternal groups helping society), Lei Day (Hawaii only, not in Bermuda as Sandi Griffin thinks), and In the Heart of the Beast (Minneapolis giant puppet show).

Worldwide it is also Beltane (or Samhain across the uninhabited southern zones of the planet), International Workers' Day (what it sounds like), EuroMayDay (like May Day, except not), the founding day of the Illuminati, the optional feast day of St. Joseph (patron saint of workers and fathers), the 203rd anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire, the 170th anniversary of the first adhesive postal stamp (YES!), and the 158th birthday anniversary of Calamity Jane (who is mentioned here only because her name was Jane, like Jane Lane, who was far more interesting).

It is also the day when, 18 years ago, Rodney King made his famous appeal for calm during the 1992 riots in Los Angeles. Whatever other faults he may have, Mr. King did a great thing at that moment, and it is worth reflecting on that. Thank you, Mr. King.

AND... because it is the first Saturday in May, it is Derby Day (what is likely to be a very muddy Run for the Roses) and more importantly Free Comic Book Day! Get yer butt down to your local comic book store and get one while supplies last!

Whew. Go thou and party.

  • NEW! The Fate of the Duels, by A440 (Part 2): Once safe in room 403 on the fourth level of the motel, Brittany looked over the interior, which was white and pink plaster with a clean white deep carpet, a decent bed with red sheets, a high-def TV on the wall, and a equally clean red-tiled bathroom with a pull-up window shade over the toilet. From there, the blonde turned on the TV and tuned to ABC Nightline, then unwrapped her bundle, revealing two five-foot-long katana-type samurai swords in their sheaths, gold armor on the swords, and a black pearl finish on the scabbards; those she carefully placed in the closet.
  • NEW! Flight, by Bear-Bell (Parts 1 and 2): Trent wondered what had happened. He wasn't exactly content with his lot in life, and he'd always had a generally negative outlook of the world, but this feeling of dissatisfaction had never been so acutely understood before. Janie's gone, he immediately thought. What was he supposed to do without her?
  • NEW! Kid Sister, by Cacophonysundae (COMPLETE!): "Sorry, Janie," he tells her. "Monique and I broke up again." "I heard." Janie doesn't bother to hide the scorn in her voice. She's pretty cool for a kid sister, but sometimes she gets into these moods where she thinks she has to be the mom and he hates it because she's good at it, and she always makes him feel like he's some unruly kid that needs to be scolded.
  • NEW! One Night, by Charliefox2012 (COMPLETE!): I sigh inwardly, still drinking my soda. Really, it's just to be doing something. I know I should let it go, just move on. I mean, she has. It's like nothing ever happened, and that bothers the hell out of me. Nevertheless, I can't complain if I want to keep her by my side. I was stupid. I am stupid. I should have refused her. So she kissed me; I should have stopped her there. I didn't want to though. I wanted it. [Revised from original version on PPMB from 2009.]
PPMB
  • Finn Morgendorffer 44: My Three Young Women, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 4): “Dammit, Jane, sometimes I think you want me to cheat on you.” “Excuse me?” “All this talk about being around other girls, who, by the way, I haven’t even kissed them. I’m just around them. How would you feel if I came to all those gigs you take Trent to and point a shotgun in the face of every guy who flirts with you?” “They don’t flirt with me. Which is more than I can say for you.” [NOW COMPLETE! Last part here: “Finn, I’m a perfect lady. Nothing happened. Besides, I know you have a girlfriend.” “Well, that does make me feel a little better. At least I didn’t cheat on Jane.” “Well, not a perfect lady. I did manage to sneak a few peeks.” “Eep!” “You don’t need to get so mad. For what it’s worth, I was impressed.” “You’re not helping.”]
  • NEW! The Hallowed Halls of Fielding, by Roentgen (Part 26): "I cannot believe this!" said Helen. It was six o'clock in the morning. Helen, Jake and Quinn were holding an impromptu discipline session. Quinn thought that she would be able to sneak in unnoticed, but when her room was checked at 5:30 am, she was immediately woken up and called down stairs to face her punishment. The smell of Quinn's breath would guarantee a contentious session. "So I'm going to ask you again, Quinn: where did you get the alcohol?" (FF.net)
  • NEWESTER! A Health Unto Our Heroine! by Gwrtheyrn (COMPLETE!): [A songfic you simply have to sing!]
  • NEW! It Ends Tonight, by GlitterShrooms (COMPLETE!): It was on one of the western cliffs that the crowd decided to have its final parties. In particular, Miss Jennifer Burns sat on the cliff’s edge and watched the sun burn. “Yo! Burnout!” yelled her friend Angel, “You know what they say about staring at the sun. Don’t wanna go blind, do you?” “Like it matters,” yelled Jennifer back, “It’ll all be over soon enough. Besides, I’m wearing sunglasses. Hey Scarlett! Any word from Andrea?”
  • NEW! True Art Is Angsty, by Yogi (COMPLETE!): Daria scowled at the words on the page: “Once upon a time.” ALL Fairy Tales began with that. It was so obvious, so overused, it was almost like the words lost meaning and were just what people began fairy tales with. Sure SOME people would be satisfied with that, but Daria was EIGHT. Her first story could begin with something more highbrow than THAT. (Daria/Princess Tutu)
SFMB
  • Daria Race War, by Bliss Ticks (continued): Kevin took his dad’s truck to what he thought was the seediest section of Lawndale. Although it was closely monitored by the police, there was a liquor store here and several of the homes were for sale or had weeds growing semi-unchecked on their lawns. He had it all figured out: he would go down to the slums, buy some drugs, plant them on Mag, then report him to Ms. Li. It was foolproof. All he had to do was find a dealer.

THIS IS
SPAARRRTAAAAA!!!

Also, get set for Daria fandom's own version of MARCH MADNESS!!!

How do I turn off the CAPSLOCK??!?!?

PPMB
  • A Double-Blind Trial, by Disco316 (COMPLETE!): Sandi called out to Stacy in a whisper, “Stacy! What’s going on?” Stacy’s attempt to make a reply caused her to wince in pain, as much as she could without being able to safely close her eyes. “Um, sorry, Stacy. Can you handle nodding?” Stacy nodded with a noticeable effort. “Good. Did you see who did this to you?” A nod. “Was it some pervert guy trying to get lucky with you?” Stacy shook her head. “Was it a guy?” Head shake. “It’s a girl?” Nod. “Did you know her?” Nod. “Wait, if you’re here, and Quinn’s over there, where’s…?”
  • NEW! End over End, by Shull Bitter (Part 1): "Jane, you look terrible," Daria said. "Thanks, amiga. You always know just what to say to make a girl feel good about herself," Jane said. Her words were croaked out in between sniffles. Jane was fully dressed and accessorized with a box of tissues tucked under one arm.
  • Engineered Tiff, by Ajar (COMPLETE!): God, would those two ever shut up. Maybe if I called an accessory committee meeting, that would get me out of this. If being here didn't guarantee me instant popularity I wouldn't be able to stand the boredom.
  • Falling into College 72: Valley of Love and Delight, by RLobinske (Part 12): "Still trying to figure out how Michael lucked out," Jack said. Thinking about Daria's story of how they got together, Helen said, "From what I understand, he took a chance." "And still got lucky," Jack said. He paused and hurriedly added, "I don't mean that kind of lucky."
  • Finn Morgendorffer 35: The Fat Chick, by HolyGrail2007 (Part 5): “Sandi, that girl dared to stand against you, and said she didn’t need you anymore. And now, she’s here. You have the opportunity. Crush her, break her. Show her what a fool she was for ever thinking she was superior to you. Who deserves to be the queen of Lawndale High?” “Me.” Sandi smiled cruelly.
  • NEW! The Hallowed Halls of Fielding, by Roentgen (Part 13): Daria gave up on further attempts at friendship and left the room. Daria enjoyed the fact that the four flights of stairs she had to climb were down, and not up. Stepping forward, she OH MY GOD IT'S A PIT I'M STEPPING INTO A BIG BLACK PIT THAT GOES STRAIGHT DOWN AND GOES NOWHERE GOD HELP ME I'M GOING TO FALL PLEASE GOD HELP ME
  • Not So Slow, by Jim North (COMPLETE!): I flick the switch up, then I flip it down so I can flick it up again. This time, I have to do it right, or something bad will happen. The switch flips up, the lights come on, and it is right this time. I know because I can feel it in my fingertips. If it had not flipped right, I would have felt it all along the whorls and curves on the pads, intruding on the tissues underneath like a virus trying to spread through my body starting at the extremities. But I do not feel that, so it is okay. It is going to be okay. I am not slow. (FF.net)
  • Tales of the Ringbearers: A New Ringbearer, by Aloysius (Part 4): “Back when Beavis was being trained, he happened to run off a cliff and started to fall. You could even hear him yell, ‘AIEEEE!’, as if he were Daffy Duck. Then one of the metahumans we normally deal with watched him and said, ‘You know, I wonder if that silly boy will remember that he can fly?’” She chuckled and shook her head at the memory. “Did he finally remember?” Tony asked. Rose shook her head. “Nope."
  • Tales of the Ringbearers: The Aeon Interdict, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): I wish I could see the children now, Claire Defoe said, feeling ashamed as she remembered seeing the battle that took the life of Sandi Griffin, one of the students she remembered from Lawndale High School. I wish that I could let you know what I can do, and help all of you start to rebuild the world...
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: "...And that's how your dad and I got together"), by Project Pegasus (COMPLETE!): [Oh, I'd better not ruin this one. Hang on.]
  • When the Bullet Hits, by Silver (COMPLETE!): The gun fell from Jane's hand. It fell as much from shock as any thing else. The force of the round it had spat out moments before had kicked Tom Sloane over backwards. Her Tom. Or so she'd thought.

Crack That Whip!

As you may recall from last year at this time, this day is the 269th anniversary of the birth of the Marquis de Sade, who gave angst a good name. BAD name, sorry, I meant to say he gave it a bad name. Freudian slip there.

Bottoms up!

Didn't mean to leave this much space. Drat.

Breasts We Don't Ever Want to Think About

Anyone who has ever studied, and I mean really closely studied cartoon breasts knows that there are certain limits beyond which the sane mind will never go. In the interests of furthering the cause of science, we present two such examples here. Do not stare at them for too long! You will not go blind, but you will wish you had. Or maybe you will go blind, who knows. Just be careful.

The image of Ms. Li, by the way, was inspired by U.S. soccer star Brandi Chastain, who performed a similar victory celebration in 1999 in the Women's World Cup. [Heh heh heh, women's cup, heh heh heh]

Dariaverse.com has updated. Lots of new fanfiction there. If you have some spare fanfiction lying around your hard drive, send it on! Lawndale Online has also been updated with "Calling Calliope," by Dennis. All stories have previously appeared elsewhere, but they're good for the gettin'.

Prince Charon's Iron Chef, Daria is Raven's Apprentice, has gathered a remarkable number of responses, all of them highly amusing.

Disco316, Brother Grimace, Dennis, and BlackHole continue to labor on DariaWiki, with great results. Latest page: Ken Edwards, about whom much more could be said. Why were pedophiles supposed to be funny on that show? This issue has already been talked to death, so no more here. Oh, well.

This is about the time of year that this story takes place. A golden oldie, one of my favorites.

Gene has started a PPMB thread about Nicely Turned Phrases in Daria Fics. Contribute your own favorites.

NEW! On the Backgrounders website, Moe, Tall Goth Girl, and Brown Blouse have been updated. Anyone using them in a fanfic, let me know!

Anyway, now it's time to list some fanfiction that's popped up in the last few days.

PPMB
  • Acts of Cupidity, by Disco316 (Parts 1 and 2): A response to WacoKid's Iron Chef: Valentine’s Day’s hand slapped around on the clock/radio until it found the snooze button. He rolled over in bed, his head throbbing. He was about to drift back to sleep when the sound of his phone ringing snapped him out of unconsciousness. He grabbed the receiver off his nightstand and thumbed it on. “Mmmmhhhh, hello?”
  • Knockin' on Heaven's Gate, by HeirOfNorton (Parts 1 and 2): This is a revised version of an older story, "Between the Lives." It picks up from the end of "Esteemsters" and picks up with Joey's point of view, then with Helen's. Good stuff!
  • Turnabout Confusion Part II: All The King's Horses, by Dennis (continued): Skylar Feldman was annoyed. Oh, he hid his irritation behind his usual facade of insouciance, striding down the halls of Lawndale High like he owned them and was only deigning to go to homeroom for reasons of his own, but he kept replaying last night in his mind. How dare a nonentity like Jane Lane turn me down. As far as the rest of the school would know, she hadn't, but Skylar was one to brood on insults.
  • An Unexpected View, by Paisleygal (Part 1): As she approached the reception desk, a handsome young man came over to greet her. “Ms. Morgendorffer, we’ve been expecting you. Welcome to the MT Towers. My name is Jeffrey, and I am here to help you.”

Whip it! Whip it good!

Bottoms up! Yes, that rascal the Marquis de Sade was born a mere 268 years ago today. He knew how to have a cracking good time.

Ahem.

Enough of that. More later. (NOTE: The link has been fixed. Sorry if that was confusing.)

And now for different completely something...

More goodies from Little Red Riding O'Neill!
(sorry)

Completed Stories (Yahoo!)
The Haunting of Lawndale High, by peapodmaster (Patrick Moore), a Daria/Real Ghostbusters/Extreme Ghostbusters/Beavis and Butt-Head crossover, for real!

Continued Works in Progress (Yippee!)
Daria: The Lost Virtual Seasons, Episode 06x01: Chicken Soup for the Stacy, by peapodmaster (Patrick Moore)
Dial M for Magic, by LSauchelli (part 1), a Daria/Dresden Files crossover
Evil Daria Vignettes, by everyone (Go, Roger, go!) *
The Misery Chicks, by NightGoblyn (Part 3) *
An Overlooked Flaw, by legendeld (Parts 7-10)
Stranger, by legendeld (Parts 1-2) *

* Story may contain mature elements. Brace yourself.

And now for something completely different....

Little Red Riding O'Neill is going to share some of his basket of goodies with us, fresh from PPMB. Isn't that disturbing? Anyway, here is part one of my fanfiction catch-up list.

Completed Stories (Hooray!):
Apocalyptic Daria, by Doggieboy (version on SFMB)
Canon Fodder, by Roentgen (The funniest part is who plays Daria in FIC. Poignant ending, too.)

Additions to Works in Progress (Hooray!):
Lane Change, by Ranger Thorne
Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part II), by jtranser
Falling Into College #61: Latitudes, by Richard Lobinske. This is Richard's version of Is It Fall Yet? with the future Daria crew running around on summer vacation while at college, just before Daria and Michael tie the knot next spring. Michael has already kissed another girl, so that means Daria will go to an art colony and meet Alison, and we can't go into what happens next, can we? Should be fun for all. (Need a smiley face here.)

Other Interesting Threads:
What are you working on for 2008? (more stuff here for next year)
Interesting news from Scissors MacGillicutty regarding "Reclamation," by Roentgen. For more news, go to Roentgen/CINCGREEN's blog, in the list at left. Good luck finding it! (That was mean, I know, but kinda fun, too.)

More to come. I apologize ahead of time if your story wasn't mentioned, but as I said, I am way behind and desperately trying to catch up while also cleaning the house. Stay tuned.

Interesting Threads That Can Be Found on PPMB

For those in need of a different way of looking at the world....

Happy snaps: wilderness pictures of Terra Australis, by Deref

The completely random post thread, part II - I drank what? (continued)

Bring on some funny! (con't.)

*collapses* (or, The Kara Wild Is Between Law School Semesters Thread) (con't.)

Three Word Story (Part VI) (con't.)

I've been surfing around the other non-PPMB/SFMB message boards and have found very little to report on. Almost all the other boards seem to be stagnant. Alas.

Looking for a Mascot, part III

Darent, or Trentia?

Disturbing.

I like that in a mascot, but I will have to pass here. Needs something more.

Does Trent like to pretend he's Daria when he's locked in his room at night? Do you wonder if he dresses up like her when no one is at home, like that guy making a dress out of human skin in Silence of the Lambs? Brrr.

Looking for a Mascot, part 1

Hmmm. This is close, it's in the general area of what a good mascot should be, but I dunno....

This of course is a parody of Divine in Pink Flamingos (at right).

Must keep investigating.
