Amelia Airhead

Quinn is prepped and ready to follow in Amelia Earhart's footsteps by flying solo nonstop across the United States. Earhart's milestone flight began on this day in 1932, and the next day she became the first woman to do just that. For Quinn's sake, I hope the Fashion Club doesn't see what she's wearing. I mean, jodhpurs? With her figure? Not. Done.

Trent, meanwhile, could recreate his attempts to write a used car jingle in honor of International Strange Music Day, but I'm not sure Jane could handle the mystery and suspense. Besides, anything Mystik Spiral plays is "strange music" as far as I'm concerned.

On this day in 2000, a TV Guide Online column came out that talked about the (then) upcoming Is It Fall Yet? movie with Daria. Read on to find out about Daria's admiration for yo-yo tricks!

Celebrate this Holiday Responsibly: Always Check the Date First!

Don't worry about Jake. He's just a little upset because it's National Waffle Day and he accidentally ate some waffles that were past their sell-by date. Honestly, though, I would think that--after his run-in with Tokyo Toby's--he'd know what real food poisoning feels like.

Today is also International Strange Music Day, so don't freak out if you hear Trent composing another jingle for Happy Herb's. Unless the music actually sounds good, in which case you should definitely freak out.

Finally, it was on this day in 2000 that TV Guide Online published an "interview" with Daria Morgendorffer. Read it to learn about her thoughts on her first movie, her feelings about school, and her fondness for yo-yo tricks.

Fanfic Update!
  • Dying in a Nightmare (Two-Eyed Charlie's "Wacky One-Shots & Misc."), by Two-Eyed Charlie (COMPLETE!): "Jake finally understood things now, understood why his life always took a hard right off the overpass."

  • Monkey Business, by Kristen Bealer (part 1): "'Happy birthday to me! Happy birthday to me! Happy birthday dear meee-eee, happy birthday to me!' Jane was bouncing around the front yard, waiting for her party guests to arrive."

  • Unnamed story (LLH - Short Entries), by Roentgen (parts 34 - 36): "'I'll bet,' Quinn said, 'that she jetted out of here because she knew this was gonna be awkward!' Then Quinn shut up. She was talking to herself, the first sign that you're going nuts. Without Daria available, Quinn's first idea was to talk to Jane." (Part 35) (Part 36)

TGIF, Marvin the Martian, etc.

Ten years ago, TV Guide ran a short description of a then-upcoming episode, "Speedtrapped."

And that's the big news for today. Okay, I'm kidding. Today is the 226th anniversary of the birth of liberator Simón Bolívar, making it Simón Bolívar Day in some places. It is also the 109th anniversary of the birth of writer Zelda Fitzgerald, wife of writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. Daria makes a reference to Zelda Fitzgerald in "Depth Takes a Holiday," the link being the fact that Ms. Fitzgerald was diagnosed with schizophrenia and died in a fire in a mental hospital, and Daria thinks she, too, is going crazy, just because personified holidays are popping out of a Chinese restaurant and forming a rock band with Trent Lane.

And it's the 89th anniversary of the birth of women's rights advocate Bella Abzug (whom Daria is dressed like in the alter ego at right, with some padding); the 61st birthday of Marvin the Martian; and the 59th year that Cape Cavaveral, Florida, has been in the business of launching space rockets. (The last link shows the first rocket launched from the Cape.) Amelia Earhart was also born today, but we've already talked about her and the Quinn alter ego.

Moar l8r after dinner, or something. Or, better yet, tomorrow.

Summertime, Summertime, Sum-Sum-Summertime

The title above is from the 1958 hit song by The Jamies, which surely one of you must have heard. Anyway, this is the official beginning of summer, and it is also World Refugee Day, International Surfing Day, Litha (or Yule if you are in the Southern Hemisphere), and the 46th birthday of the Hot Line, a.k.a. The Red Phone.

I think we'll go with the surfing thing for art, courtesy of Daria's appearance on TV Guide, July 12, 1997.

Intriguing Daria Bit of the Week: C.L. Basso wrote an "odium" to 'shipper fanfic some years ago. You might enjoy it. I did.

  • Commitment Issues, by Fringeperson (Part 2): Daria wasn’t sure what time she woke up, but as it was Saturday at the Lane house, it didn’t matter. The house was silent compared to the activity of the Morgandorffer house, where Helen would be raving on the phone, Quinn would be playing her teeny-bopper music and gossiping about outfits, and Jake would be crying, ranting about his father, or trying too hard to be cheerful. However, there was still sound, and it seemed to be coming from Jane’s room. (Daria/Trent)

  • Choice of Words, by Silver (COMPLETE!): “Shut it!” The words were a slap, and Sandi Griffin turned in absolute shock. Over the three months they'd been a couple, Stacy's boyfriend—Chris, she reminded herself—hadn't once raised his voice in anger. She opened her mouth to snap back, but Chris kept ranting.
  • Gimme Skelter, by TAG and Brother Grimace (Part 9): Mackenzie fired the grenade launchers directly into the zoms attacking from the highway, swinging the twin barrels to the right to catch more zoms coming up a shallow depression between the road and a two-story cliff face from a road cut. In seconds the weapon hammered the vast mob with projectiles that blasted heads and limbs from running bodies before exploding in dazzling fountains of white and yellow flame.

i winz teh internetz!!11!1!!

Fixed it. Much better. You are free to use this pic for fandom purposes as you like. I don't own the character, after all.

Bitchin' pic. She's right up there with Jonny Quest.

Anyone remember this story?

Hangin' Ten Off the Big Island

As luck would have it, a copy of the July 12-18, 1997 TV Guide came up on e-Bay, and here is the (doctored) image of Daria surfing away, in big screen. I'm not entirely happy with my efforts to wipe out everyone else around her, but it will do for now. Maybe someone else can do better. More soon.

Okay, back again. Here's a contest of sorts. This is a bitmap image of Daria surfing, scanned into my computer with all unnecessary objects around it, plus minor scratches, etc. Take it and do whatever you wish with it, but make it better. Post a link in the Comments to your results. Ready, set, GO!

Aisle of You

"Mart of Darkness" (the title taken from Heart of Darkness) premiered on MTV just eight years ago today. It is also worth pointing out that Daria appeared on the cover of TV Guide eleven years ago today, and on a surfboard too (seen here). Is there nothing this cartoon character cannot do? Other than get back on the air, I mean.

Breitasparrow has created a "quick manip" on PPMB, and it's pretty funny. Check it out.

  • Box to the Future, by Smileyfax (COMPLETE!): Somewhere in there is the real ending, but every bit of it is to die for. Thank you, Smileyfax!
  • LATE ADD: Mart of the Dead, by Smileyfax (Part 1): It appears that Andrea might become the last woman in Lawndale, and the last man in Lawndale might be . . . oh, God. (Heh heh heh heh.)
  • The Quiet Ones, by Smileyfax (COMPLETE!): A new (and better!) ending for "Speedtrapped."

PPMB
  • Calling Calliope, by Dennis (Part 2): Tiffany knew Sandi was much more intelligent than she was, but she also knew the difference between intelligence and smarts, and in smarts, she beat Sandi hands down.
  • Falling Into College 63: Broken Star, by Richard Lobinske (Part 7): Corporal Adler gets some help from on high. WAY up high.
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part II), by jtranser (continued): Brittany and Kevin, together again (but not for long).
