Hey, Clown Daddy!

Happy birthday to Kevin Daniels, who voiced Mack in the third season. I guess not even the voice actors could handle Kevin Thompson for very long.

Today is also the anniversary of the birth of famous clown Emmett Kelly, known for his "sad sack" routine. I guess that, being dead, he can't clown and therefore Mystik Spiral's Freaking Friends song will be put to the test.

Awww, They're So Cynical When They're Sleeping!

Daria and Jane are all over Public Sleeping Day, although they have a long way to go to catch up with Trent's record. If you decide to sleep in public, just make sure you check your face for embarrassing markings when you wake up.

Also, happy birthday to actor Geoffrey Arend, who provided the voice for Upchuck. Although Daria was among his first acting jobs, he's gone on to a pretty good career since then!

Down, Boy!

Helen isn't quite feeling Love Your Pet Day, but since Leary isn't her pet I suppose she gets a pass. It makes you wonder--if Helen were to get a pet, which kind would she want? I would bet something really low maintenance like a goldfish. Or maybe a pet rock.

Happy birthday to Daria voice actor Amy Bennett, who was born on this day in 1975! In addition to sharing a first name with one of the coolest characters on the show, she voiced Mrs. Johansen and Mrs. Bennett.

Time is running out to vote in the Daria Fanworks Awards! Please use the ballots in the linked post to send your votes in soon.

You Can't Get Old Without Birthdays!

Quinn is living one of her worst nightmares for International Day of Older Persons, but the good news is that she's got a geriatric Joey, Jeffy, and Jamie to carry her dentures and turn Wheel of Fortune on for her. I'd also kind of love seeing Quinn and Sandi as senior citizens in the nursing home, sniping back and forth and critiquing the other old folks' clothes.

Also, happy birthday to Sarah Drew, who voiced Stacy Rowe and was born on this day in 1980. Instead of cake, I'll offer some birthday cookies in honor of National Homemade Cookies Day. Don't worry; they aren't shaped like hearts.

But What About the Honor of Llllawndale High?

Ms. Li is horrified to learn that today is International Anti-Corruption Day. It's not fair--how is she going to embezzle school funds and invade student privacy now?

Happy birthday to Kevin Daniels, who was one of several voice actors to portray Mack. I guess the stress of putting up with even a fictional Kevin is too much for one man to handle.

Happy Birthday, Toulouse le Dreck!

Although Daniel Dotson was an enormous sleazebag, from what I can tell the man who voiced him, Dave Grohl, was not. So I have no problem wishing him a happy birthday!

Also on this day in 2002, Look Back In Annoyance (also known as "a cheap-ass clip show") aired on MTV. We got to learn all kinds of behind-the-scenes tidbits, including Daria's flings with four of the five members of N*Sync and Jane's dreams of working for Disney.

Looks Like She Didn't Take Brittany's Sunscreen Advice

Old Lady Quinn is on her way to the Better Days Retirement Home cafeteria for some applesauce and pudding in celebration of the International Day of Older Persons. Looks like her hair is as bouncy as ever in spite of her years. Too bad she has no idea where her teeth are.

Speaking of getting older, today is also Sarah Drew's birthday. The actress who voiced Stacy Rowe turns 33 today. Happy birthday, Sarah!

A Feisty Birthday!

Happy birthday to Geoffrey Arend, the voice actor who played Upchuck on Daria after the first season. The birthday boy turns 34 today, and let's hope his social skills are a lot better than that of his character.

Today is also Floral Design Day, so you can choose either to make a dainty garland for your head and sing or make a dainty garland for your neck and choke. Choose wisely!

  • The Prep, the Artist and the Loner (Iron Chef: Tom was there), by Walter Kovacs (part 1): "As expected, Daria was almost entirely ignored by the other students. Sandi blinked for a few moments and looked at the clock, then double checked on her cell phone, 'Actually, I have you for class this period.' She wasn't about to take any added time out of her day to deal with a teacher, 'So can we make this fast before like, school starts? I was not a fraud."

  • The Whispers of Ignorance, by ThanatosRW (part 1): "I am gambling what little time I have left to tell these to whatever damnable souls who finds these documents in the vastness of cyberspace. Happy Birthday, Mack Daddy!

Happy birthday to Kevin Daniels, born on this day in 1976! Daniels was the second of three voice actors to play Mack on Daria, spanning all of the third season appearances of the character. I bet Mack himself wished he could trade off with two other people in dealing with Kevin.

Fanfic Update!
  • God Save The Esteem ep 38: Highland Lassie, by Charles RB (part 2): "Trent opened the door and looked at Amy Barksdale. 'Whoa. You look different without your jacket, Daria.' 'Daria? I thought you were out until mblblbbl hi'"

  • Jane Morgendorffer 2: The Middle School Years, by LadieT (part 5): "'Thanks Quinn, I really needed this. I know you aren't having a good time - ' Jane was stopped in mid sentence by Quinn. 'That's not true, I miss spending time with just you. You're my big sister. I love Daria and Trent, but you come first. You go shopping with me and I know how much you hate that, so it's only fair that I should go running with you sometimes. Besides, I know you've been feeling a little lonely since Daria's been hanging out with Danny. I just wanted to remind you, that well I'm here for you.'"

  • Life After Highland Ch. 2: 3 of Swords, by LadieT (part 1): "Jane was stunned at how similar in appearance Daria and Amy were. It sunk into Jane's mind that if the drinking water in Highland hadn't stunted Daria's growth, she would almost be a mirror image of her aunt. Hell, if I didn't know better, I would have thought that Amy was Daria's mom instead of Helen."

  • Mission: Unfashionable, by JPAGC (part 2a): "At the urge of a motion and look by Jodie, Quinn also joined the group. The other young men and women looked at one another in the sudden quiet Hall. Quinn looked around: all the other, veteran, students were all quickly scurrying away, keeping quiet and clearly avoiding looking in the Principal’s direction. 'Miss Landon, are all the new students here?' asked the Principal. 'Yes, Miss Li,' said Jodie in a quiet voice."

  • Parallel Universes Mystery (Non-Daria), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "Chris opened the door of the Interdimensional Time machine onto a lot of confusion... 'This is a problem,' Jess said, as she looked out. 'I agree,' Chris said. 'Hello, you received our interdimensional message?' someone said. 'Yes,' Chris and Jess said together 'Then come with me,' she said."

  • A QB Grows in Lawndale, by Kristen Bealer (part 12): "He turned another corner and looked at the patterns made by the streetlights filtering through the trees as he thought about Link. Why do I even want to pick another fight with Dad? It's not like I'm even sure I wanna do this, anyway. It'd be like I'm making a big deal about something I don't even want. Or at least I think I don't hey is that Daria?"

  • A Rather Interesting Way To Go (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by DIsaac (COMPLETE!): "'So who the poor unimportant sap that kicked the bucket this time? Said Jane Lane, One part of the mortician team that would work to make Tom look good for the show. 'That poor bastard is Tom' said Daria who is the other half of the team."

  • They Don't Cry (Iron Chef: Crazy Pairing Story!), by RX-87 (COMPLETE!): "'Mmm, Jeff?' Dawn cooed, hoping maybe tonight would be the night things would change. He was in such a good mood tonight. Maybe he'd be up for it. 'Wuzzat, Beautiful?' The muscular young man grunted, not moving from his embrace of his lover's plush body. 'You know there's that school dance coming up?' Dawn said, casually. 'Yeah, so?' Jeffy's tone wasn't at all encouraging."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Daria and Jane in your Home Town), by neonhomer (COMPLETE!): "I was heading home from a jobsite, when I spotted a car on the side of the road, with out of state plates, with its four-way flashers on. I slowed down, and pulled over. A girl wearing a red jacket gets out of the driver's seat. 'Yall need help?' I ask as I walk up."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Old Daria.), by RX-87 (COMPLETE!): "When Daria could take no more of the over-endowed blond bimbo sitting in the chair next to her bed mangling The Aeneid with her squeaky voice (she was the granddaughter of an old classmate, wasn't she? What was her name? Damn senility...), Daria called out to a nearby nurse."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have: Last Friday Night!), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "Mack shook his head. 'What he hell's up with Upchuck and your mom, anyway?' 'Well, he saw her in that really skimpy elf-outfit she wore for her Christmas card a few years back-' Jane's laugh warmed the room. 'The one she'd done as a little gag gift for your dad?' Tom joined in on her laughter. 'The one the printers mistook for their cards to be sent out to everyone on their Christmas card list.'"

Happy Birthday to the Voice of Jane!

Actress Wendy Hoopes (a.k.a. Jane Lane, Helen Morgendorffer, and Quinn Morgendorffer) turns 36 today. She has been pretty busy lately.

Here is Ms. Hoopes as Jane, here she is as Quinn, and here as Helen. Nifty, huh?

Today is Election Day in the U.S.A. You know what to do. Make it count.

Fifteen years ago today, Daria appeared in the Beavis and Butt-head episode, "The Trial." I haven't seen it yet, but Daria is supposed to laugh in it.

Tomorrow is the birthday of a famous original character in Daria fanfiction. Guess who?

Write On!

"Write Where It Hurts" appeared on this date ten years ago, finishing off the second season of Daria. Daria does something nice and makes her mother cry with joy. That was sweet. Sort of.

This episode has an intriguing subplot, a story within a story, about Daria's family 15-20 years into the future. (From 1997, that would be 2012-2017.) Granted, this is only how Daria imagines it, but how true to life do you think her vision could be?

Me, remembering my own past, I think she's way off. You just never know what's coming. Seemingly minor things can throw you way off your imagined course. I was having a hard time with statistics in psych grad school in the early 1980s. It led me to call a gaming company and ask if they had any job openings. They did. I left grad school and became a magazine editor, having never had any courses on editing, journalism, etc. I was probably the last person on earth who got away with that. Couldn't do it now.

And my catching Daria on TV was a fluke. If I hadn't turned on MTV in 2000 and caught "Dye! Dye! My Darling," I wouldn't be typing this. No idea what my hobby would be. Probably still missiles, rockets, and (Mercury) spacecraft.

We need more fanfic about Daria's future. A lot more.

NEWS NOTE: It is one of the curiosities of the Daria show that the same voice actor who did Tiffany Blum-Deckler also did Ms. Janet Barch. Ashley Albert is famous once again, now for her songwriting talents and work as the lead singer in The Jimmies, a group doing kids' music. Keep up the good work!

A Daria Web Browser???

A mere eight years ago, this announcement was made about a Daria-themed web browser (created by NeoPlanet) that could be downloaded from the Daria section of the MTV site. What was up with that? I've been seeing reports about this browser for some time (see here, here, here, here, and here), but of course they are all old news. Some links about it are given in the Daria Directory at left.

It appears that the NeoPlanet web browser can be downloaded from this old NeoPlanet website (click on "Downloads" at the top), but to be honest I've had enough trouble with my computer after catching that rootkit, and I'm less than excited about messing my system up any more than it already is. Does anyone know if this browser works for IE6 and Windows XP? Or is it too primitive to bother with unless you are a trufan and want Daria on everything? Inquiring minds want to know.

Now over 31,000 hits on DFB2! Woo hoo!

FF.net
  • Box to the Future, by Smileyfax (Part 8): "Dad, it's me. Daria. From the future." [I don't want this story to end, but it probably will soon. Damn.]
PPMB
  • Jane Lane: Ace Attorney, by Lorenzo Sauchelli (Part 1): Jane's a lawyer. Jane's boss is Jim Vitale. THE Jim Vitale. Jane must win her first big case . . . or else.
  • LLH Mini: The Artist as a Young Woman, by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "The artist refuses to apologize for this work." [Pure Jane.]

While surfing the 'net I noticed that Evan Farmer, the voice actor for Eric Schrecter, still has good work. So apparently does Karen Sztajnberg, an editor for Is It Fall Yet?
