"Ooh, la la. Doctor, I have a pain."

Dr. Phillips seems to be in a good mood. Either he finally figured out what caused Daria's rash or he's just happy that it's National Doctor's Day.

Today is also a good day for artist's birthdays: both Francisco Goya and Vincent van Gogh were born on this day in 1746 and 1853. Jane seems pretty knowledgeable about both: she filled Daria in on who Goya was in "The New Kid" and painted a topsy-turvy van Gogh in "Art Burn." Just don't ask her to paint any more reproductions.

This Might Explain Some of His Song Lyrics

Looks like Trent's already started celebrating Weed Appreciation Day, but someone should tell him that the holiday actually refers to the kind of weeds you pull in your garden. However, in his current state, he probably wouldn't care. Less than a month left until 4/20, man. Just hang in there.

Fanfic Update!
  • Beat It, by metameric1 (part 3): "Jack closed the door to the drum room, and looked around for Trent. Through the double-glazed picture window Daria was visible, tearing into a smallish Premier kit with a woofer doubling the length of the kick drum."

  • Chemistry, by Captain Marbles (part 4): "The girl known to the staff as Esmerelda Schwartz, niece of Tycho Owen awoke. She yawned and stretched, then called room service for some breakfast."

  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 6): "It became a suddenly bad day when Ms Barch decided to break up Brittany and Kevin for a science project, and landed Daria with the thick-headed footballer."

  • Dystopia, by mailorderannie (part 4): "Daria crossed her arms. 'I'll repeat myself. Do we have a plan? For that matter, are we still safe here? With no honest media around to report on it, what's to stop whoever's in charge of this sector -'"

  • Hana Hou, Pt 2, by metameric1 (part 9): "Trent had to smile when he glanced out the kitchen window. 'Hey, Daria,' 'Hm?' 'The treehouse looks pretty cool. I like the tie-dyed shades and the macramé planter things hanging underneath.'"

  • James the Lesser Presents Vinny Lane, by James the Lesser (part 34): "Vinny isn't sure what Ms. Li said over the intercom as classes ended but Daria heard it. 'A meeting, on Super Bowl Sunday, announced at the end of the day. She's up to something.'"

  • Moonstruck Dumb, by EntrancedCat (part 2): "Sandi Griffin adjusted her regulation green toque, outer layer made from the finest Mongolian cashmere with soft breathable Lunar-made liner, to better protect her delicate earlobes from the early winter breeze off Lake Michigan."

  • Run Jodie Run, by DIsaac (parts 4 and 5): "KYLE ARMALIN (Lead Anchor for WLWN-TV): I'm Kyle Armalin, Reporting from the Lawndale 5 Newsroom. We have just received some major breaking news on the Mayor Edwards Investigation." (Part 5)

  • Unnamed story (IC Runaway Daria), by Waylander (part 4): "'...I return to the hotel room and find the message from One-Eye. I have to return to New York ASAP. Of course my vacation was ruined. I swear he enjoys it!'"

Do You Have to Make Up Your Own Greeting Card, Too?

Daria's thinking hard to come up with a good idea for Make Up Your Own Holiday Day, and I suspect she'll come up with something along the lines of "National Leave Me the Hell Alone Day." A wise choice, if you ask me.

This is also the fifteenth anniversary of the episode "Lucky Strike," which aired on this day in 2001. Maybe Daria should make up a holiday about hiring qualified teachers instead of students to cover during teacher strikes.

Three Magical Anniversaries

Upchuck's preparing for his big moment to emulate Harry Houdini, who was born on this day in 1874. Although both have performed daring escapes to impress their audiences, only Upchuck left his spectators disappointed that he survived.

Today is also the anniversary of not one but three Daria episodes: "Cafe Disaffecto" in 1997, "The Lost Girls" in 1999, and "The F Word" in 2000. You know, I suspect that if Mr. O'Neill had sent one of Daria's Melody Powers stories into Val Magazine instead, Daria wouldn't have won the "Spend a Day with Val" contest. You might say he would have succeeded at failing.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (parts 2 and 3): "'Is it going to be a boy baby or a girl baby?' said Quinn. 'I don't know yet,' said Helen. 'It's going to be a girl,' said Daria. She didn't know how, but she knew." (Part 3)

  • Dystopia, by mailorderannie (part 3): "Brittany grabbed Daria's arm. 'C'mon!' she said in a low voice. 'But - ' Daria gestured to what had been the Guardian building."

  • Lawndale 2021 Season Three, by Anguirus1955 (part 9): "It was just a quarter past five in the morning, when that dreadful sound woke me from my slumber. The hell?"

  • Mysteries of Lawndale 03: Night of the Coffee House, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 3): "It was quarter past six when the group entered Viv's videos, and business was raging. There was a large number of customers in the store. 'This is going to be difficult,' Daria said."

  • A New Set of Rules, by Dennis (part 28): "Things with Colleen were back to normal with Colleen by the next morning. Daria wished she could say the same thing about Kevin."

  • Run Jodie Run, by DIsaac (parts 1 - 3): "'...That is why I'm announcing I, Jodie Abigail Landon, Will be running to be your next mayor of Lawndale! Just as I said eight years ago... I need your help to make this happen...'" (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Standstill, by Princess_Pasta (part 1): "It was a perfectly ordinary Wednesday afternoon, the sky overcast and dreary, early morning chill hanging in the air. Daria Morgendorffer was, predictably, late."

  • Trent (Iron Chef : The another Lane vocation), by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "The coins tintled as they fell on the open guitar case. 'Thank you, man,' said Trent. The donor smiled a little before continuing on his way."

  • Vincent (Iron Chef : The another Lane vocation), by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "The young man stood up, straightened his uniform, carefully examined his shoes, trousers and hands for any stains, dirt or wrinkles, and then knocked on the door."

  • Wind (Iron Chef : The another Lane vocation), by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "The four men and two women stand straight and unmoving, watching the bus crawl up the road. Their kahi skirts and army green trousers and skirts fall down in straight lines."

Amy, Stop or Your Face Will Stick Like That!

Amy's got the right idea for National Goof Off Day, although I'm not sure if her niece's wedding is really the best place for it. I suppose if the mood strikes, you just have to make a silly face.

Today is also World Water Day, but I don't recommend going on any school fundraising casino boats in celebration. You might end up much closer to the water than you'd like.

What Story Will You Tell?

Daria's celebrating World Storytelling Day by sharing some...interesting...reading material with her classmates. You can celebrate however you like: reading to seniors, putting a new spin on old fairy tales for the Gupty kids, or scaring the hell out of your family around a campfire. Daria's tried them all, so now it's your turn!

Fanfic Update!
  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 5): "'Good morning!' Ms Li called as she opened the door to the classroom. It was about seven minutes past ten, and O'Neill had already tried to suggest that Thoreau was a pioneer of the conservationist movement, and Brittany had showed that she'd watched the movie rather than read the book, and, as usual, didn't get the point."

  • Daria Morgendorffer as a practical politician, by Szcz (COMPLETE!): "Daria Morgendorffer sat in the old fashioned leather armchair, laid her legs in Doc Martens boots on the coffee table. In her hands, miss senator of the state twiddled a lash."

  • Dystopia, by mailorderannie (part 2): "Daria went to the door, and after looking through the eyehole, opened it, and let the caller in. 'I didn't think they'd send you,' she said. 'I thought you'd be opposed to helping brains on general principles.'"

  • Shadows of a Timeless Song, by Dennis (part 12): "Silence reigned until Tom the barman returned and showed them upstairs. Wordlessly, he opened the door on a good-sized room with two four-poster beds and a large bay window from which Daria could see the night sky."

  • Take a Walk in my Shoes, by DIsaac (part 5.5): "NARRATOR: We all have dreams. Daria has her dream of being a writer. Brittany's dream is actually to be in science which would be weird if you really didn't know her at all."

That Was Even Further Back Then, This is Still Dumb

Helen, Jake, Willow, and Coyote are meeting up to celebrate the anniversary of the episode "That Was Then, This is Dumb," which aired on this day in 1998. I suppose a modern-day version of this episode would posit the Morgendorffers and the Yeagers as products of the 80s, which could be a whole new level of terrifying depending on which subculture you go with.

Fanfic Update!
  • Chemistry, by Captain Marbles (COMPLETE!): "Several minutes earlier, high in the sky above the action. Wildcat to Ultra--M is down!"

  • Dystopia, by mailorderannie (COMPLETE!): "Jane turned around, just outside the passenger terminal. 'Are you sure that you can't come with, amiga?' A wry grin graced her countenance."

  • End (Ideas!), by Princess_Pasta (part 1): "In the blink of an eye, he was gone."

  • For You, by metameric1 (COMPLETE!): "Coffee already made? No weird noises from her roomie's bedroom, not that she'd expected any."

  • James the Lesser Presents Vinny Lane, by James the Lesser (part 33): "Christmas was coming and Vinny was losing his mind. He went through Christmas before but never with a girlfriend."

  • Lawndale 2021 Season Three, by Anguirus1955 (part 8): "In the office of Helen Birdwoman, located in the upper floors of the main building of Sebben & Sebben, Helen 'Birdwoman' Morgendorffer neatly shuffled several papers into a folder."

  • Moonstruck Dumb, by EntrancedCat (COMPLETE!): "Only a few minutes after the flying saucers landed on the grass of the commons area shortly after the seniors had finished their lunch period, the US military surrounded Lawndale High."

  • Sisters and Friends, by metameric1 (part 28): "Quinn looked up from the dinner table. 'You guys are moving out?' Oh no! Where to? I've gotten so used to having Daria, Jane and Trent around--at least, just across the street...no more weekly dinners?"

  • Songs About Jane Lane, by with caution (part 2): "A few hours of painting later and Jane was finished with her latest masterpiece, unusually satisfied."

  • The Storm, by dmsfanman (part 1): "'I'm just about to leave for home, Daria. Have you decided what you are going to do yet?' Quinn said in her typically high pitched voice that almost sounded like a whine."

  • Trouble in the Future, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "It had been a long day. After the second day of Orientation 'O' Week, Leigh Steinhardt was ready to go to sleep. However, there was a knock at the door."

  • You'll Know When You Have Kids of Your Own, by metameric1 (part 12): "Bob Coleman smiled as he slowly made his way to the kitchen door. Opening it, he saw Rusty along with two other girls her age and a boy, who was pushing a hand truck loaded down with some equipment."

Mmm...Butterfly Pie

Daria's here to help teach us because it's Learn about Butterflies Day. Jane already knows all she needs to know about them: if you try to hold one tightly in your hand, it will blah, blah, blah. Whether or not she's tested her theory regarding tearing off its precious little wings is unknown.

For the math geeks out there, this is also National Pi Day. Celebrate by calculating the circumference of a circle, or by eating a nice piece of pie. Your call.

A Scene from the Rougher Side of Jane's Past

This troop of little cuties is taking National Girl Scout Day to something of an extreme, but perhaps that will be a lesson to all about what happens when you fail to pay off your Girl Scout Cookie debt. Jane Lane learned that one all too well.

This is also the fifteenth anniversary of the episode "Camp Fear," which aired on this day in 2001. There weren't any Girl Scouts in that one, but there were some high-priced cookies courtesy of Earl and Barbara.

Fanfic Update!
  • Bullying A Dragon, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "'Nice cup. You always have your tea in a fancy cup.'"

  • Chemistry, by Captain Marbles (part 2): "'All right, Cadets Vargas--Robertson, you understand the mission?' 'Yes, Admiral Harriman!' 'Then get to it--and good luck.'"

  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 4): "'A hundred miles? To go to a mall?!' Jake demanded. 'Dammit, there's a mall five minutes away!'"

  • Fever Dreams, by mabel (COMPLETE!): "After the break up with Daria... things got heavy. Bromwell was a first rate school, and no amount of old money could keep Tom enrolled if he did not pass his classes."

  • Just Living My Life, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "People would always try to say things about the LGBT members of the Legion. One day, on some show, some loudmouth in the audience tried to shout her way into a conversation and shout Daria down when she mentioned that she had no problem with any of her fellow Legionnaires being gay."

  • Lawndale 2021 Season Three, by Anguirus1955 (part 7): "'Gentlemen! I have finished my nap! Now, to unveil my latest creation!' Dr. Weird announced as he walked into his lab."

  • No, by mabel (COMPLETE!): "Daria liked to joke about Helen's lack of parenting; this was obvious to everyone in the Morgendorffer household besides Jake."

  • Party at 111 Howard (Iron Chef: Party at Casa Lane), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "'Did I hear you right?' Daria Morgendorffer asked her friend Jane Lane as they arrived at school. 'You're having a party?' 'That's right.'"

  • Songs About Jane Lane, by with caution (COMPLETE!): "'Later, Daria.' Jane shut the door of Casa Lane and walked into the kitchen."

  • Sonoma Coma, by jtranser (part 22): "In an abandoned steam whistle factory in the Swiss canton of Bern, tormented ship rivets were quietly sobbing steel tears as Upchuck's brass band played the evil polka of violence."

Yet Another Category Where They're in the Minority

Jodie and Mack aren't actually very proud about their middle names for Middle Name Pride Day, but if you had a name like Mack's you'd probably feel the same way. As far as I can remember, Mack (Jordan) and Jodie (Abigail) are the only Daria characters who have official middle names. If you know of any others, let me know in the comments.

Today is also a triple anniversary for episodes, as "The Invitation," "Depth Takes a Holiday," and "A Tree Grows in Lawndale" all aired on this day in 1997, 1999, and 2000.

Fanfic Update!
  • Changes, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "As one goes through life, there are changes in the way that person lives. As the person grows, their identity grows and changes as they mature."

  • Chemistry, by Captain Marbles (COMPLETE!): "Karen 'Burnout' Disher woke up feeling normal for the first time since the mosquito bite. Her brain had been on a roller coaster of highs and hallucinations interspersed with violent bouts of nausea for weeks, but that seemed to be over."

  • Maternal, by Indigo (part 4): "Daria and Jane were in Daria's room when Helen decided to bring them a snack. She did not intend to eavesdrop, but as she neared the door, she could hear Jane trying to talk Daria into something."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef : MMORPG, Lawndale style), by Waylander (part 15): "It was a vicious and exhausting battle, but in the end Darlene triumphed over the combined forces of Dust, Grime, and Cobwebs."

  • You'll Know When You Have Kids of Your Own, by metameric1 (part 11): "Dammit to Hell. Jake stopped the winding machine and decided to hang it up for the day."

Mr. O'Neill has apparently taken on a second job in honor of National Dentist's Day. However, if he's anywhere near as incompetent as a dentist as he was as a teacher, then I wouldn't let that man within a mile of my teeth.

  • Action Stories #6: Struck by Lightning, by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): "'A parade!' Livewire said, clapping her hands with delight. 'I love parades!'" (Part 7)

  • ASPS reboot, by PrecambrianStudios (part 1): "'So, here's what we do!' Rachel Ng splayed out a carefully drawn diagram on the table before the small audience contained within the cramped confines of their host's dimly-lit dorm room."

  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 3): "'Hey Daria, you're a chick, right?' Kevin asked when she went to her locker to get her books. He'd been leaning against hers, so she had, unfortunately, had to announce her presence in order to get him to move."

  • Lawndale 2021 Season Three, by Anguirus1955 (part 6): "Daria Morgendorffer looked down at the food on her plate. 'Are you sure that this is edible?' she asked Quinn."

  • Mad Dog or Damned God, by baelparagon (COMPLETE!): "It was a rainy fall Friday evening in Highland Texas in the Morgendorffer residence. Mr. Morgendorffer was reclining in his chair reading the paper while Mrs. Morgendorffer was cooking in the kitchen."

  • Action Stories #6: Struck by Lightning, by NightGoblyn (parts 4 and 5): "'This is amazing,' Dr. Klein muttered, staring at her computer display. 'I'm going to have to revise some of my theories, and I'm not the only one. This could mean that we were in error about some of the fundamental underpinnings of scientific thought.'" (Part 5)

  • Cynic and a Six-String, by fringeperson (part 2): "Daria didn't get to meet the infamously sleeping elder brother until about a week after the self-esteem classes were behind them."

  • Daria: College Pains The Sophomore Year, by James the Lesser (part 15): "Quinn screams with Lindy and a couple others as Mystic Spiral finish up their set. They are at a huge concert set up by MTV."

  • A Friendship Past, by elainefr (COMPLETE!): "'You look great tonight,' he openly admired how the soft green of the top that she wore brought out the fleck of gold in her brown eyes."

  • The Geek's Expose, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "At the Morgendorffer's house, they were watching a home video, from Daria's third birthday. Young Quinn blew out the birthday candle's first. 'Hey! You're ruining my birthday cake!' Young Daria said."

  • Hana Hou, Pt 2, by metameric1 (parts 7 and 8): "She looked down towards the tiny cove, and even in the bright, early afternoon light the scene was surreal." (Part 8)

It's Pistol Patent Day, the anniversary of the day Samuel Colt patented his revolver in 1836. I'm not sure if Upchuck with a gun is scarier than Upchuck without one, but I'd feel better if he wiped that cheesy grin off his face.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Partner's Complaint," which first aired on this day in 2000. I think Jane should be glad Daria wasn't carrying a pistol when she kept going on about Tom, although they did work things out in the end. Without pistols, I mean--although that could be a fun AU fic.

Fanfic Update!
  • Acquainted (Ideas!), by Princess_Pasta (COMPLETE!): "The brisk wind hit Daria Morgendorffer full force as she rushed from the parking lot, the icy chill tearing through her auburn hair as she hugged her gray peacoat closer to her body."

  • Action Stories #6: Struck by Lightning, by NightGoblyn (parts 1 - 3): "'Ugh,' Quinn said, wrapping her arms around herself. 'Out of the fire and into the icebox.' She pulled out her Legion phone and powered it up, frowning at the small 'no service' icon." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Invader Quinn Season Three, by Anguirus1955 (part 1): "'No! NOOO!!! You'll pay for this,' Miss Bitters said into the phone. 'Well, students, despite my moral outrage, Principal Li is allowing you all to celebrate Valentine's Day today,' Miss Bitters said to her class with clear distaste in her voice."

  • Take a Walk in my Shoes, by DIsaac (part 5): "To say it was a normal at Lawndale High the day after that shooting star was a flat out lie. Things were Topsy Turvy."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef : MMORPG, Lawndale style), by Waylander (part 14): "Darlene wasn't sure what to expect as she approached the wrought-iron gates of the Old Cemetery. • Bathroom breaks, by Indigo (COMPLETE!): "In a reversal of their usual routine, Jane Lane headed for the bathroom at the Zon and her friend Daria Morgendorffer stayed to watch the end of Mystik Spiral's first set."

A Holiday For All of the DJs Out There, Lame or Otherwise!

Bing--or is it Spatula Man?--is inviting everyone to celebrate World Radio Day today on Zeeeeeeeee 93! If you call in right now, you could win a free T-shirt! Or you could just save your sanity and change the station.

For all of you fans of non-annoying radio out there, here's Free Radio Lawndale by Ken Tremberth and Erin Mills. Enjoy!

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria and Jane With Garterbelt (World's Shortest Crossover, Part XIV: The Crossover Awakens!), by Anguirus1955 (COMPLETE!): "'So, let me get this straight,' Jane said inquisitively as she looked at the large black priest, with Afro-est Afro ever, who stood before her."

  • Fractured (Ideas!), by Princess_Pasta (COMPLETE!): "'If you ever need to speak with anyone...' Something clattered against the floor and it took Daria a moment to realize that she'd dropped her fork."

  • Hana Hou, Pt 2, by metameric1 (part 4): "She'd long since grown accustomed to the way she would sometimes hear fragments of sound that spoke of smiles and laughter and sadness. They drifted down from the dry rustle of bamboo leaves and the hollow resonance of the culms when they happened to bump together."

  • The Knight Air (Iron Chef: Random Pairing Challenge 2016!), by EntrancedCat (COMPLETE!): "Jennifer 'Burnout Girl' Burns paused dramatically with her hand about to turn over and place the last card. She smirked at her friend, Andrea Engebretson. 'How much you wanna bet on what this last card is, Andy?'"

  • Lawndale 2021 Season Three, by Anguirus1955 (parts 3 and 4): "In the bridge of Sealab, Daria Morgendorffer slept peacefully at her post while Jodene Sparks played Mahjong on one of his communication consoles. Sparks glanced over at Daria and frowned. 'Hey... slacking off is my job,' he said to himself." (Part 4)

  • The Many Doctors, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 34): "The TARDIS materialized in a space that resembled a museum. The Doctor, Rose and Felicia emerged. 'Where is this?' Felicia asked. 'Earth. Utah, North America. About half a mile underground,' the Doctor answered."

  • Taking Things Slow (Zetor's thread for misfit stories), by Zetor (COMPLETE!): "Trent looked down at the crowd as Mystick spiral finished their set. They'd really been on their game; he'd counted seven people that noticed when they'd stopped playing."

Try Not to Spill Milk on Your Friends, Either

Jake clearly gets the point of Don't Cry over Spilled Milk Day, as he doesn't seem about to spill any of the stuff at all this time. I do hope that he also remembers that one shouldn't clean up spilled milk with paper towels near open flames, either.

Today is also Make a Friend Day, so if you get stuck in any self-esteem classes then be sure to take note of any snarky artists in the room. You never know what might happen.

Laissez les Bon Temps Rouler!

Daria and Tom aren't into the Mardi Gras spirit, but then again who can blame them? Their last parade experience didn't go so well, after all. I also doubt that Lawndale's Mardi Gras parade is anything close to as exciting as the ones in New Orleans, either.

Fanfic Update!
  • Close to Heaven (Iron Chef: Random Pairing Challenge 2016!), by Anguirus1955 (COMPLETE!): "Heads or tails? Heads or tails? Go inside or head home and spend another Saturday alone since Daria's gotten back together Tom? Heads or tails? Heads or tails? Jane watched as the quarter flipped through the air before she caught it in her hand and pressed it against her other wrist before lifting her hand up."

  • Daria Wars: Episode XXVII: A Medieval Menace (World's Shortest Crossover, Part XIV: The Crossover Awakens!), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "Daria had had enough of the medieval fair, and she hadn't even met Jane yet. 'Where is she?' she asked aloud. She could see the Fashion Club nearby, at a pie booth."

  • Hana Hou, Pt 2, by metameric1 (part 3): "Truth lay folded before emergence, like the wings of a Monarch butterfly within the tissue-thin walls of a blackening cocoon."

  • Heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, by BardsAmbrosia (COMPLETE!): "'Daria, please don't leave.' 'I have no choice in the matter, (Y/n).' 'Damnit!'"

  • Passing the Torch (Iron Chef: Random Pairing Challenge 2016!), by mailorderannie (COMPLETE!): "'Hey, thanks, Joey, for dragging all this equipment in," Kevin said as he unlocked the door to the coach's office, in the deserted locker room' 'No problem, it gave me a change of pace from getting things for Quinn.'"

  • Stacy Morgendorffer, by Rémi (part 3): "Daria was quietly watching an episode of Sick, sad world in her room when she heard a soft knock at her door. 'I am not there. If you have a communication to transmit to me, come back tomorrow. Or never. Preferably never.'"

  • Strange Reaction (Iron Chef: Random Pairing Challenge 2016!), by Zetor (COMPLETE!): "Artemis Walker watched from the bushes as a rusted sedan pulled into the small forest clearing. He'd been tracking this one for weeks."

  • Take a Walk in my Shoes, by DIsaac (part 4): "Well Remember Andrea and Scarlett, The ones that I told you to remember for later on in the story. They noticed things were different right when they woke up that morning as well."

  • Typical Episode of Gundam or How the Eighth Fleet was Destroyed (World's Shortest Crossover, Part XIV: The Crossover Awakens!), by Kuriamo22 (COMPLETE!): "Captain Matthews looked smugly on the as he gazed out the window on the bridge of the Earth Alliance Battleship Kirkpatrick a Nelson class ship at the center of the Eighth fleet enroute to Earth after completing their mission in the L5 colony cluster."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef : MMORPG, Lawndale style), by Waylander (parts 12 and 13): "After Razorfin's departure Darlene was torn between anger and embarrassment. She doubted the new players often find themselves in such a predicament. I wonder if I managed to offend some Altherran deity." (Part 13)

That Greeting Card Industry Isn't Going to Support Itself!

Quinn's clearly enjoying Send a Card to a Friend Day, although I'm willing to bet she didn't bother to send any cards of her own out. Such a shame, specially since she once had such a promising career ahead of her as a greeting card poem writer.

Today is also Superbowl Sunday, so be on the lookout for any school review meetings Ms. Li might be trying to sneak past you. Also, beware of dip--short for dipsaster!

"What does science know?"

Don't touch that dial! It's National Weatherperson's Day, and you might want to stay tuned in case there's a hurricane on the way. You wouldn't want to get trapped in a shed with Kevin and Brittany, would you? Especially once they start singing.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Highland Years, by Meester_Lee (part 1): "It was a small one-story wooden house with novelty siding and a cheap asphalt-shingled roof built during a building boom that coincided with a build-up of manned bombers during the early Cold War."

  • Do You Have a Spare Pen? (Iron Chef: Random Pairing Challenge 2014!), by JoeMerl (COMPLETE!): "Jodie paused, took a deep breath and stepped into the room, ready to begin her first class at Crestmore University."

  • Hana Hou, Pt 2, by metameric1 (part 2): "The big Zodiac inflatable boat slammed into the crest of the wave, going airborne for a moment before dropping hard into the trough. Kyle rode the floor like a surfboard, throttling the twin two hundred horsepower Mercury outboards carefully to pace the face of the wave now rising just behind them."

  • Hunter (Random Pairing Challenge 2016!), by Zetor (COMPLETE!): "Charles Ruttheimer III looked down at his lecture notes and sighed. He'd been a rising star of the business world, at least until all those sexual harassment suits."

  • Invader Quinn Season Two, by Anguirus1955 (COMPLETE!): "Daria and Jane had just walked in the door when Daria's cell phone rang. 'Hello?' she asked as she answered it. 'Hey, is this my favorite niece I'm speaking to?' asked a voice on the other end."

  • Lawndale 2021 Season Three, by Anguirus1955 (part 2): "When Daria Morgendorffer entered the bridge of Sealab, she noticed that Captain Murphy was unusually irate. She listened to his ranting as she walked over to her station and grabbed her headset."

  • Marathon, by smarty0007 (COMPLETE!): "'Daria? Hey, Daria. Wake up.' 'Don't wanna...'"

  • Morning In The Park With Jane, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "'Do we need to wait here? Why can't we just wait over by Legion Tower?' Barry Bruce ran his fingers over the neck strap attached to his Canon camera, and idly dreamed of the much, much better camera that he'd get one day, if he could ever get a really good photo of something worthwhile..."

  • Shelter from the storm, by Indigo (COMPLETE!): "The snow was falling thickly as Daria pulled into the drive on Glen Oaks Lane. She was glad that she had decided to leave Boston for the Christmas break a day early, although the forecast of snow was not the only reason she had done so."

  • To Each Their Own (Random Pairing Challenge 2016!), by Princess_Pasta (COMPLETE!): "'I can't believe the nerve of her!' 'I know, it's as if she has no interest in you whatsoever'. Tori Jericho rolled her eyes as she listened to one of her best friend's latest tirades."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Random Pairing Challenge 2016!), by tafka (COMPLETE!): "Garrett looked at the new hire. The slight blonde girl could merely be under-sized, but if he was any judge, he'd guess under-aged. Still, she did have what they were looking for – some small talent and moderately presentable looks."

  • Watch the Carnage (Random Pairing Challenge 2016!), by JoeMerl (COMPLETE!): "'Oh, yeah?! Do you think I'm, like, stupid or something?!' 'Well, it's not exactly smart to wear that top with fandango jeans, now is it?!'"

  • You'll Know When You Have Kids of Your Own, by metameric1 (part 9): "'Sam?' Trent called, hearing the muffled grunting as the recording engineer fiddled with one of the more vintage pieces in the effects rack."

Tickle This, Birthday Boy

Daria's in one of her more disturbing alter egos in honor of Sesame Street character Elmo's birthday. Love him or hate him (and I think more people lean toward the latter), the little red muppet has had a big impact on children.

I Think They Might Have Missed the Point

Helen and Jake are all set for National Bird-Feeding Month, and you can join in, too! Although I think it might be simpler if you just set up a bird feeder in your yard. I'd love to see Jake's reaction to the squirrels that try to steal from our bird feeder. The battle would be epic.

Fanfic Update!
  • DariaBrittany (Iron Chef: Brittany & Daria Swap), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (parts 1 and 2): "Daria awoke. 'It's too early,' she thought. She tried to go back to sleep, but found that she couldn't. She sat up. Something wasn't right." (Part 2)

  • Lawndale and Sandi Griffin's Genie: Future Excerpt 3, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "A few minutes later, the Away Team beamed down. Back at Lawndale High, Samara was checking her email. 'Wait, how could this email have a "Send" date in February 1969? There was no internet then.'"

  • Lawndale 2021 Season 3, by Anguirus1955 (part 1): "Daria blinked as she looked around the bridge. 'That was weird,' she said to herself quietly as she noticed Sparks talking to the crew of a small transport sub."

  • Look Into My Eyes (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: The Madness Sets In), by Anguirus1955 (COMPLETE!): "Quinn Morgendorffer walked into the bathroom and shut the door. "Oh, what did I eat?" she asked painfully as she sat down on the toilet."

  • Quinn's Code 15: Yeager 0.68 Beta, Morgendorffer 1.05 RC, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "Daria Morgendorffer walked into the kitchen. She saw her mother rummaging in the kitchen. 'Hiding the cooking sherry from Dad?' 'I'm going to make some bread, Daria,' Helen said as she pulled out a breadmaker and set it on the counter."

  • Take a Walk in my Shoes, by DIsaac (parts 2 - 3.5): "Andrea do have a point on the universe on keeping promises. Leave a Message at the...Rrrr...Beep!

In honor of National Inane Answering Message Day, I'm going to share the following message ideas courtesy of Upchuck (via the Daria Diaries), who is about as inane as they come:

"This is Charles. I can't come to the phone right now, because I am occupado. I could tell you what I am doing, but let's not ruin the mystery. At the tone, leave your name, number, and the time you called, and I will get back to you as soon as I can tear myself away from my life of intrigue, about which I cannot be specific, lest I put both my life and yours in danger."

"No, no...not now, girls! This is Charles Ruttheimer the Third, and you have reached my answering machine...please, ladies, patience!...speak clearly at the tone and...I'm on my way, my dears!...they so hate to be kept waiting...anyway, I'll get back to you as soon as possible...if this is an emergency, well, so is a woman on fire!"

"You have successfully contacted the underground grotto of The Ruttheimer Group, currently engineering our secret plan to achieve world domination by the year 2010. If you would like to know more about our plans to gain global control of mass media, subjugate the military forces of every nation on Earth, and install Charles Ruttheimer the Third as supreme ruler of all humankind, please leave your name and address at the beep, and we will send you an informative brochure and a free bumper sticker."

I think our boy has just a little too much time on his hands.

Dancing the Night Away with Jackson Pollock and Jane Austen

Daria and Quinn are really getting into the anniversary of Pride and Prejudice, which was first published on this day in 1813. The writing fantasy sequence this image was taken from was very obviously inspired by Jane Austen's work, especially Pride and Prejudice, so it's very likely that Daria is a fan.

This is also the anniversary of Jackson Pollock's birth in 1912, so this might be a good day to throw a Pollock-themed school dance. Or not.

Fanfic Update!
  • Invader Quinn Season Two, by Anguirus1955 (parts 9 and 10): "Stacey Morgendorffer finished the last math equation on her homework paper before turning on the TV in the living room. She checked her watch. 'Just in time,' she said to herself with a smile as the Mysterious Mysteries theme began playing." (Part 10)

  • James the Lesser Presents Vinny Lane, by James the Lesser (part 24): "Vinny is with Daria at the Zon watching Mystic Spiral play. He notices a guy looking over at the two of them. Ok, either he thinks Daria is cute or... He thinks Daria is cute and waiting for a chance to talk with her."

  • A New Start, by mabel (COMPLETE!): "Identity crises weren't new to Quinn. She had known for years that something was wrong with her, that the emptiness she felt inside wasn't normal."

  • Stacy Morgendorffer, by Rémi (part 2): "Sitting in the back of the car driving her to Lawndale High, Stacy Morgendorffer was silent. Moving had already been stressful, and apprehension besieged her mind."

  • Take A Walk in My Shoes, by DIsaac (prologue and part 1): "To be honest the story I'm about to tell you is just as strange as I write it, but believe me when I say it happened in Lawndale." (Part 1)

Has it Hijacked Your Brain Today?

I don't think Daria's properly appreciating peanut butter on National Peanut Butter Day, but considering how often peanuts and peanut butter actually featured on the show--in Daria's part-time job, as Jake's squirrel-catching bait, Trent's songwriting inspiration, etc.--I suppose the stuff has gotten enough of the spotlight for the time being.

Fanfic Update!
  • Brian's Latest Kitty, by Meester_Lee (COMPLETE!): "'I got your kitty,' said Ross the scruffy-looking man in the beat-up sedan. 'Do you have your money?' 'Yeah,' said Brian."

  • The Choice, by Erin M. (parts 2 and 3): "Sunset tossed the remote for her TV aside in disgust. While she normally liked starting her day with the news while she got ready for school, today it all seemed the same: violent and depressing." (Part 3)

  • Invader Quinn Season Two, by Anguirus1955 (parts 7 and 8): "Almighty Tallest Red finished sipping his soda and sighed. 'I was curious to see how long it would take for you to shut up on your own, Quinn, but it's been three... hours. Three hours!'" (Part 8)

  • James the Lesser Presents Vinny Lane, by James the Lesser (part 19): "Daria describes the traumatic experience she went through earlier with Mr. O'Neil. 'I have to spend the day with Val.'"

  • Stones Have a Way, by EntrancedCat (part 3): "As Daria came down for breakfast, Quinn glanced up then back to her yogurt then up at Daria again. 'Double take, Quinn? Are prepping for an audition as Juliet? The first time she sees Romeo?'"

Does "Meow" Count as a Question?

Jake's participating in an in-depth interview with Mr. Whiskers for National Answer Your Cat's Questions Day, although I suspect the only questions my cat seems interested in asking are all food-related. If you hear your cat asking you questions today, be sure to answer them...and then seek professional help.
