Ready for Takeoff!

Quinn is suited up and ready to take flight on Pan American Aviation Day, and she'd better hurry up before the Fashion Club sees what she's wearing. Stacy would be horrified that those pants make her look like she has saddlebags. Or is it carpetbags?

For those who'd rather keep their feet on the ground, there's also the Festival of Winter Walks. Daria and Jane will pass on this one, because while their last trek through the snow unearthed some real insights into each other's souls like their M&M color preferences, it really isn't an experience they'd care to repeat.

I imagine it goes without saying that Helen will be celebrating National Device Appreciation Day, mostly by spending the entire day on her cell phone. I can't imagine what her life would be like without devices, and I imagine the advent of smartphones has only made her work life even more intense.

She's Looking Very...SHARP!

Brittany has traded in her pom poms for shears in order to celebrate the anniversary of the movie Edward Scissorhands, which was released on this day in 1990. I think she's even more unhappy about the loss of her cheerleader uniform, though, because black is hardly a cheerful color. Still, if anyone can keep her bouncity-bounce under these circumstances, she can.

I hope she doesn't try to send any long distance messages for Letter Writing Day, though. Not only will it be nearly impossible for her to hold a pencil now, but I'm sure her spelling and grammar are just awful.

There's also no way she's going to be able to celebrate International Civil Aviation Day by flying anywhere, because can you imagine trying to pass through a metal detector like that? Lucky for Jake and Daria on their next flight; it will be free of any squeaky voices...except for Jake's when they hit turbulence.

Let's wish Quinn lots of luck in recreating Amelia Earhart's first trans-Atlantic flight by a woman, which set off on this day in 1928. She'll need that luck, too: never mind what the wind will do to her hair; what was she thinking with those pants?

Someone should warn her that the mode of transportation might be a little less reliable than she expects, because the holiday commemorates the Wright brothers's first successful flight on this day in 1903. Can you believe they didn't even have in-flight magazines? No Waif, Quinn. No. Waif.

The Spruce Pinto

Tom is showing just how eccentric a disgustingly wealthy man can be in this alter ego as Howard Hughes. The reason I'm posting it (aside from it just being a funny picture) is because on this day in 1937, Hughes set a transcontinental airspeed record flying from Los Angeles to Newark.

Today is also the anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe's birth in 1809. Not only is Daria shown reading Poe's The Telltale Heart in the episode "Gifted," but The Raven also inspired both The Cynic by Steve Mitchell and A Raven, Nothing More by Lew Richardson.

Finally, today is National Tin Can Day. Anyone got a can opener?

The Flighty Quinn

Quinn is prepped and ready to follow in aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart's footsteps by flying solo from Honolulu, Hawaii to Oakland, California. Earhart became the first person to successfully complete that flight on this day in 1935, so Quinn is (gasp!) years behind the fashions on this one.

Happy Wright Brothers Day! On this day in 1903, the Wright brothers made the first successful heavier-than-air flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Quinn is ready to recreate the famous event, but she's probably insisting on a pink airplane and onboard carrot sticks. Maybe we'll be lucky and she'll just decide to stay up there indefinitely.

Quinn is ready for take-off in celebration of the anniversary of Amelia Earhart becoming the first person to fly solo from Honolulu, Hawaii to Oakland, California. On this day in 1937, Howard Hughes beat his own airspeed record by flying from Los Angeles to New York City in 7 hours, 28 minutes and 25 seconds. Tom may never have flown an airplane, but he has apparently found his own way to emulate the eccentric billionaire.

Also on this day, writer/poet Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809. Happy birthday, you delightfully creepy man! Daria is seen reading The Telltale Heart in the episode "Gifted," in which she responds to Brittany's assumption that the story is a romance with, "Yeah, nothing says 'be mine' like a pounding heart beneath a floorboard."

When in Rome, Party Like the Romans Do

Today is the first day of Saturnalia, the ancient Roman midwinter festival of wackiness, when the low became high and high became low for a week (until December 23rd). That's why Daria gets an emperor's golden wreath today. It is also a day marked in a Daria story having to do with her diary. Do you know that not a single Daria story makes use of Saturnalia? What have we become to have missed this?

This is also Wright Brothers Day, commemorating the 105th anniversary of the Wright Brothers first heavier-than-air powered flight at Kitty Hawk, during which no one served salted peanuts. Thanks to them, Daria and her father got a rare chance to bond on a passenger jet in the episode "Of Human Bonding," but they blew it. Of course.
