It's Pronounced FRONK-en-steen!

Jane is trying out a new style for Frankenstein Day, but I really don't think green is her color. Nice that she got to keep her lipstick, though!

Of course, we wouldn't have Frankenstein without Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, who was born on this day in 1797. Although the author never got mentioned on the show, we do know that Daria has read the book. What she thought of it is anyone's guess.

Fanfic Update!
  • Brittany - Esteem of the Transfer Student, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "Daria Morgendorffer was waiting when Brittany entered the classroom. 'Hi, Daria,' she said cheerfully."

  • Daria: In Another World?, by starwater09 (part 9): "Daria sat alone in her room staring indifferently at a game console trying to come up with an activity to past the time. She'd already finished most of her schoolwork, she already checked out the books she was interested in reading at the library and started to read at least a few of them."

  • Doctor Who - Changes in Time and Space, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "The TARDIS had materialised in a forest. Sabir emerged from the TARDIS first. Though he came from an era when world travel was commonplace (but not as commonplace as later) he had never been to the Azores."

Alison and Jane have already started celebrating National Red Wine Day! Hopefully Jane will stop celebrating before Alison invites her back to her place.

If you want something to go with your wine, today is also Stuffed Green Bell Peppers Day! The Fashion Club will have theirs on cheeseless pizza, and Brittany wants to make sure everyone remembers to listen: "You can almost hear them ringing!"

Keep a careful lookout while driving, because the last thing you want to do is run over a dog on National Dog Day. Wear your contact lenses if you have them. J.B. the Bulldog thanks you in advance!

I'm always slightly bothered that National Dog Day and Women's Equality Day are on the same day, but here we are. Hey, maybe today's the day that Helen's dream about boys cheering in their short shorts will finally come true!

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 49): "'At least ... college.' Quinn said dreamily as Heather took them to the fraternity row."

It's National Waffle Day, but don't make the mistake Jake did! Check the date before you eat them, because the last thing you want is a breakfast of (hypothetically) poisoned waffles.

Daria and Quinn aren't fooling anyone, even if today is Be an Angel Day. I mean, Daria doesn't even believe in angels, so what's she trying to pull?

While we're on the subject of small winged creatures that may or may not exist, today is also National Tooth Fairy Day! Poor Fantasy DeMartino (pre-Metal Mouth) lost all of his teeth and didn't even get any money under his pillow. No wonder he was so bitter!

Fanfic Update!
  • Bearing the Summer, by Lady Evil (part 5): "'What’s up, all you rockin’ rugrats?' Vixx started her show with her usual greeting. 'Not my boyfriend.' Daria quietly snarked as Trent snoozed next to her in his bed."

  • Erin Chambers, by OzFerret (COMPLETE!): "Erin had finished half of her pastry and was about to suggest they stroll the docks, when a large white van, with a square-rigged ship painted on the side, rumbled past the café window. 'It’s them,' Trevor cried as he hastily gathered his things."

  • Lovefool, by saiouma (COMPLETE!): "'I’ve been thinking about getting a haircut.' Daria brought up randomly, while glancing at a page of her latest book purchase."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Nathan), by welltemperedclavier (part 1): "As any artist knew, sometimes you just had to experience the familiar in a new context."

"I'm here. But where are you?"

Andrea's about to favor us with a dramatic reading about rotting bags of flesh for Bad Poetry Day, and it's still a better choice than Quinn's greasy fry masterpiece. Poor Stacy is probably still giving her poems away for free.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Jane's Addition," which aired on this day in 1999. It was the beginning of the infamous Triangle, but we didn't know that at the time. In hindsight, we probably would have rather seen a repeat of that poem about fries instead.

Fanfic Update!
  • Applied Statistics, by abe (part 1): "'Dammit!' Jane exclaimed as she slammed the door behind her, 'I know I always ridiculed that idea of predestined soul mates that Maria kept babbling on about, but right about now I'm starting to wish that they really did exist!'"

  • Doctor Who: Changes in Time and Space, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "Felicia Lovell entered the Console Room, where the Doctor and her other companions were. They were observing the TARDIS's progress through the vortex. For what seemed to be two to three months, the TARDIS had been going off course."

  • Erin Chambers, by OzFerret (part 43): "Erin woke slowly. Her hip pressed through the foam mattress onto the boards below. The light blanket cocooned her. The room was warm and the air suffused with the miasma of bodies. She did not want to wake, sleep felt comforting."

  • Vulnerable - HurtComfort - Daria Fanfiction, by QueerPhilosopher (COMPLETE!): "Daria opened her eyes reluctantly and listened to the dreary patter of rain outside. She scanned her room with bleary eyes; still adjusting to her new bedroom."

Tiffany a Filmmaker? She Wouldn't Even Know Which End of the Camera to Point!

Here we see Tiffany portraying director/screenwriter Lina Wertmüller, who was born on this day in 1928. I seriously doubt Tiffany even knows who that is, although I imagine that's true of a lot of people, so she shouldn't feel too bad. I mean, not about that, anyway.

Today is also a birthday that Jane will not be celebrating: Max Klein, inventor of paint by number kits. According to the Daria Diaries, Jane "believes paint-by-number kits are inherently evil." I guess you can't argue with that kind of conviction.

Fanfic Update!
  • Bearing the Summer, by Lady Evil (parts 3 and 4): "Dear Grandma Ruth, Thank you very much for the gift card for Manfred Flowers. It was very thoughtful. I will give your suggestion on how to use it all the thought it deserves. Love, Daria" (Part 4)

  • Daria Ravenclaw: Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 35): "It snowed a few days before Thanksgiving, coating the Castle and grounds in white. If this was back in the States, it would be real Currier and Ives, thought Daria."

  • Glass Shouldn't Be This Intimate, by deusyang (COMPLETE!): "The two girls stood in Jane’s kitchen. Jane was rummaging through cabinets, looking for anything ceramic she could use for an art project."

  • Is It 20th Year Reunion Yet? • Tasteful Repression, by sarcasticsponge (part 1): "'The agents both laughed and preceded to join the rest of the party' Fifteen-year old Daria Morgendorffer said while finishing her latest chapter of her story blog."

Brothers and Headlocks: the Perfect Combination

Sam Griffin is clearly having a great time on Middle Child's Day, although Chris is...not so much. This day should also be celebrated by Trent, Wind, and Penny Lane, Rachel Landon, and either Rita or Helen depending on the theory you subscribe to.

In fact, all the kids of Lawndale should be celebrating because today is International Youth Day. I suppose Sam is already celebrating, but hopefully the others will choose a less violent way to enjoy their day.

I think we're going to be having a sweet snack for National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, but with Rita and Helen in charge I wouldn't get my hopes up. Still, I'd rather leave it up to them than let Daria and her way-too-creepy smile get involved.

Ride the Roller Coaster of Friendship

Let's all relive the moment when Daria met her soon-to-be best friend in honor of National Friendship Day! Awww, what a sweet holiday and a very heartwarming moment.

Now...let's remember that today is also the anniversary of the episode "Dye! Dye! My Darling" in 2000. Daria takes that friendship and just sends it right through the shredder. Not so sweet, and not so heartwarming.

Fortunately for Daria, today is also International Forgiveness Day. Unfortunately, Jane doesn't go in for those manufactured holidays. Oops. This has been a post full of ups and downs, hasn't it?

Fanfic Update!
  • Backseat for No One, by EntrancedCat (part 10): "As Brittany drove away from Schloss Morgendorffer, Quinn turned around in the Mustang's bucket seat to watch her sister watching them drive off."

  • Bearing the Summer, by Lady Evil (part 1): "'Dana! Hurry up with that coffee!' 'It’s brewing now, sir.' Daria never cared to learn the names of her interchangeable co-workers so she just called all of them sir. It wasn’t like they bothered to learn her name either."

  • Daria: In Another World?, by starwater09 (part 8): "A lot had changed over the past few months for Kevin in ways he'd never thought possible in the past."

Travis is hoping someone will give him a lift for National Day of the Cowboy, but I have my doubts. I mean, I've never seen him ride and the conventional wisdom says that means I can't call him a cowboy yet.

Today is also Thread the Needle Day, but the holiday doesn't say what you should do after that. I guess you should just thread all the needles until you're out of either thread or needles? DeMartino will probably want some of them to hem his pants, and I'm sure he'll do an excellent job of it.

A Junky Sort of Day

Tom chose the wrong way to celebrate National Junk Food Day, because Jane is most likely going to kill him and use his remains as an alternate art project. Enjoy plenty of ZooZoo Drops, Juicy Joes, fries, pizza, and whatever else you can find today!

Today is also the anniversary of "The Misery Chick" in 1997 and "Jake of Hearts" in 1999. Both episodes dabbled a little on the dark side, with Tommy Sherman dying in one and Jake having a brush with death in the other, but I don't remember a lot of junk food in either.

Fanfic Update!

  • Heavenly Wuss (The 1002 Deaths of Tom Sloane), by Lady Evil (COMPLETE!): "'Look, maybe we just jumped into this dating stuff too fast.' said Daria. 'Maybe we need to take a break.'"

  • Journey into Misery, by Captain Marbles (part 4): "It was a dark and stormy night, and in Sloatstown, somewhere in the Midwest, thirteen people - seven women and six men - sat around a round table marked by a pentagram in a darkened room lit only by thirteen black candles."

Happy birthday to Edgar Degas, born on this day in 1834. Mr. DeMartino is clearly hoping to get hired as a model for one of Degas's famous ballerina paintings, but I don't think it's going to work. Not because DeMartino isn't suited--look at that man's natural grace, after all--but because Degas has been dead for over a hundred years. Better go for Plan B, Mr. D!

Jane is looking especially family-friendly as Snow White, because today is the 65th anniversary of Disneyland. The park opened in 1955, and sports figures (probably including Kevin) have aspired to go there ever since. I can't guess what Jane's opinion of Disney might be, because on the one hand it's cutesy and not her style at all, but we also know that she hopes to get a job as an animator there. I guess we always knew Jane's personal scruples were for sale (see "Art Burn" and "Malled").

Fanfic Update!
  • Backseat for No One, by EntrancedCat (part 9): "'Gah,' Daria jerked her head back as she stepped onto the Morgendorffer driveway. 'Get that thing out of my face.'"

Jane and Daria are joining the crowd of people ready to celebrate National French Fries Day, and yes, I think they will have fries with that! They might even splurge on cheese fries, even though that's not the name of the holiday. Still counts.

Today is also Embrace Your Geekness Day and Fool's Paradise Day, which means pretty much everyone is covered. Most of the people I know fall into at least one of those categories!

Finally, the episode "Fair Enough" first aired on this day in 1998. There were plenty of both geeks and fools in that one, but sadly a shortage of fries to go along with the turkey legs.

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 46): "Once P.E's time was over, Daniel went on to perform his role as secretary in the weekly student council meeting. It lasted less than the last time and was less animated but Richard was unpleasant as always."

  • Daria's Great Adventure, by dmsfanman (part 36): "Tom came up behind Daria as she was looking in the mirror. He put his arm around her waist and gently kissed the back of her neck just above the strings of the polished tiny stone spheres known as 'Martian Pearls' she was wearing."

I think Mrs. Johannsen's chocolate obsession has finally gone too far, even on Chocolate Day. I mean, all of fandom knows that I have no room to judge, but even I know that it's better to eat the chocolate than to be the chocolate.

Today is also the anniversary of the episodes "Road Worrier" in 1997 and "It Happened One Nut" in 1999. Both were quite nutty, in that Daria sat on a peanut butter sandwich in the former and sold nuts in the latter. Good news for nut fans, but bad news for Quinn and her pistachio dye allergy.

Today is also Work-a-holics Day, and I really hope that Helen plans to celebrate only one or the other. I have to assume bikinis are not part of the law firm's dress code.

Finally, today is the anniversary of the episode "Mart of Darkness," which aired on this day in 2000. In it, we found out that Andrea worked at Payday, although probably not very hard. And not in a bikini, either.

Daria Would Prefer a Polite Nod from Across the Room

Daria is patiently tolerating National Hug Holiday Day, which is the best anyone can hope for under the circumstances. This is probably not the ideal time to celebrate by hugging, so I'm offering air hugs to anyone who wants one. Please stay safe and healthy out there!

Today is also National Camera Day, which is a much safer holiday to celebrate right now. I'm sure Jane is happily clicking photos of destroyed gazebos, unconscious hypoglycemics, and paint-covered best friends.

Finally, today is the anniversary of the episode "Gifted," which aired on this day in 1998. In that episode, we had the questionable honor of meeting the students of Grove Hills, which led Daria to conclude that intelligence does not necessarily make people any more pleasant to be around.

Daria's going to read a blast from the past, Animal Farm, in honor of George Orwell's birth on this day in 1903. We know she's more than a casual fan, too, because she quoted the author at least once during the course of the show.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Boxing Daria," which aired on this day in 2001. It was a poignant almost-finale to the series (with only the final movie left before the end), giving us insight into the relationship between Daria and the rest of her family as well as a nice callback to the school psychologist scene at the beginning of the series.

It's Like Red but Not Quite

Quinn is paying her respects at the Temple of Pink (a.k.a. her room) because today is National Pink Day. Daria will take a hard pass, and I happen to agree.

In fact, Daria might even put her feelings about pink into words in honor of National Columnists Day. She's got to get started on that Future Daria career, after all! Not only that, but Brittany's got a head start on her with the "Dear Brittany" column in the Lawndale Lowdown.

Fanfic Update!
  • Beach Daze, by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "The emergence of Quinn and Nicole from the ladies bath house has turned quite a few heads due to the sexy bikini's they're wearing." (Part 3)

Downward-Facing Clogs

Who wants to join the Fashion Club for International Yoga Day? Don't all volunteer at once, now. I'm a little surprised that those girls are willing to try yoga, though. Aren't they concerned that they might accidentally break a sweat?

Today is also Father's Day, so let's hope Jake gets to spend some time on the golf course or at least doing something relaxing today. Quinn, that means go elsewhere with that credit card bill!

Finally, two years ago today the proposed Daria & Jodie series was announced on the AV Club website. It hasn't shown up yet, but in fandom hope lives on. See below for the latest developments!

"Maybe we better lay off the martoonies!"

Jake's got the right idea for National Martini Day, although as far as he's concerned it's just another Friday. I remember one fanfic author once suggested that it was the olive and not the alcohol that Jake liked, and I have to say it makes a quirky kind of sense for him. Celebrate responsibly!

Today is also Take a Road Trip Day, so this would be a good day to go bust your best friend, her brother, and her brother's band out of jail. On second thought, given recent events, it's not a good day for that. Just stay home, okay?

Fanfic Update!
  • Backseat for No One, by EntrancedCat (part 5): "Daria woke up to the sweet smell of pancakes wafting under the door of her room."

  • Beach Daze, by WildDogJJ (part 1): "Jamie White was sitting alone in a both having a slice of pizza. He looked around and noted all the differences."

  • Edicius, by elainefr (part 30): "'Who’s Tom?' 'What?' Jane pulled back from Evan abruptly."

  • Is It Show Time Yet?, by Lady Evil (part 8): "Danny was regretting his choice to put on the powder blue tuxedo before taking one last check of the lights."

  • Tell Me I'm a Wreck, by conquerlove (fullbrightness) (part 4): "I'm not the biggest fan of Bart, truthfully, but when have I ever liked Jane's taste in guys?"

Ready for Takeoff!

Let's wish Quinn lots of luck in recreating Amelia Earhart's first trans-Atlantic flight by a woman, which set off on this day in 1928. She'll need that luck, too: never mind what the wind will do to her hair; what was she thinking with those pants?

Today is also Eat Your Vegetables Day, and if you've run out then check with Brittany and Kevin. They may have some leftovers from the Food in Film Festival!

I Mean, We Already Knew She Was an Airhead

Brittany has found an unusual way to celebrate Global Wind Day, and I'm not even going to mention the suspicious window placement in that image. No, not me. I'm way too classy for that!

If wind power isn't your thing, then how about Smile Power Day? Not you, Daria. That thing is freaking terrifying.

Fanfic Update!
  • Burned Out, by Wrabbit7 (part 22): "Daria ran a hand through her hair and sighed as she regarded the mess of lyrics on the notebook paper. She started to crumple up the paper, but remembered that she wasn't at home, and stopped herself."

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 44): "This was the third weekend since the Morgendorffer family had moved to Lawndale. However, it was the first in which Daniel did not have to help his father fix the house, or prevent his mother and grandmother from killing each other."

  • Is It Show Time Yet?, by Lady Evil (part 6 and 7): "Jane went towards the auditorium after school. Daria told her Clarissa had something to tell her and that one Dr. Becky would also be there." (Part 7)

Hope They Have Pizza Delivery on Speed Dial!

Jake's clearly pleased about National Kitchen Klutzes of America Day, but I don't think anyone else in the house will be. Especially when they find out how many peppers he added to the recipe. Be sure to turn off all the smoke alarms before embarking on this holiday, okay?

Note to Dragonball Fans: This Holiday Does Not Involve Energy Attacks

Stacy's getting in touch with her inner Hawaiian for King Kamehameha I Day! She looks so content and relaxed and completely unaware that she's committing about half a dozen fashion faux pas!

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Prize Fighters" in 2001. No one does the hula in that one, but there is a massive hot dog eating contest so don't try to tell me it's not a party!

Fanfic Update!
  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 43): "'Now kids remember, your father and I haven't seen Doug and Susan in a long time and we'd like to make a good impression.'"

  • Edicius, by elainefr (part 29): "'I’ll be back for dinner,' Daria said on her way out the door. 'Another date?' her mother queried with a look over the paper that she’d been reading while sitting with her husband in the front room."

  • The Engineer and the Time Lady, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 6): "Having listened to the logs relating to what happened at Tanarexa IV, Nina pondered what had happened there. Something, or someone, was responsible for that anomaly."

Whoa!

Helen and Jake are having their own celebration for Secretariat, who won the Triple Crown on this day in 1973. Or at least so I'd like to assume. Please don't offer any alternative theories.

This is also the anniversary of the episode "Pinch Sitter" in 1997. There were a lot of fun moments from that one, but I'll just leave you with this part: "I am cool and that is it, and everyone else is full of, full of, full of--"

"Ding-a-ling-a-ling-a-ling? A-ling?"

Mack is clearly in no mood to celebrate National Chocolate Ice Cream Day, and it's no wonder: that's clearly a scoop of strawberry ice cream on his head. Better luck next time, Mack!

Today is also VCR Day, so maybe Jake could pull out those home movies again! On second thought, maybe that's not such a great idea. Jake, just have some chocolate ice cream and try not to think about your childhood, okay?

Fanfic Update!
  • Cheap Beer (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Closing Walls of Schloss Morgendorffer and Casa Lane), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "She took a swig of the cheap beer. It tasted like horse piss. But she liked it anyway, because it was forbidden fruit."

  • Danny Morgendorffer, by ST91 (part 42): "The next day things went normally ... at least at the beginning."

  • Is It Show Time Yet?, by Lady Evil (parts 4 and 5): "'It wasn’t your fault.' said Trent as he drove Jane to school. 'I made those cookies.' Jane sighed. 'I handed them out. The show is not going to go on. We’ll have to refund the money and the clubs will be done for.'" (Part 5)

More Proof That Kevin is Full of Hot Air

Kevin and Brittany are going on a little trip for Hot Air Balloon Day, but with their skills I suspect it will turn into a very long trip. Too bad they didn't have Arno the Danish balloonist around to help them, but he's probably still trying to be the first person to solo around the world twice. Good luck to him on that.

Today is also National Doughnut Day, so let me just give my best wishes to all of you twisted little crullers out there.

Cheerleading Isn't What It's Cracked Up to Be!

Brittany is going to pieces over National Egg Day, and I don't think all of Kevvy's horses and all of Kevvy's men will be able to put this cheerleader together again. I guess this is what happens when you put someone fragile at the top of the pyramid!

Today is also Repeat Day, so go on and brush off your echolalia skills! Today is also Repeat Day, so go on and brush off your echolalia skills!

Fanfic Update!
  • Erin Chambers, by OzFerret (part 40): "Erin woke with a start. She felt around in the bed. Brian was not there. Oh God. Have I slept in? Is he up early?"

  • Is It Show Time Yet?, by Lady Evil (part 3): "Jane rushed into Nurse Chase’s office. 'Nurse Chase? I don’t know how this happened, but everyone in the auditorium has been poisoned! I was just handing out cookies and everyone started passing out or throwing up....'"

  • Sitting at Home (Iron Chef: QUARANTINE!), by JPAGC (part 3): "Daria opened the door to her office. Both her children were still sitting down, but while her daughter was sitting straight, and looked at her mother with a almost expressionless face, her son was slumped in his chair, looking down. The computer screen was black."

  • Spin the Bottle, by Meester_Lee (part 3): "Daria awoke later than usual and paid for it with a cold shower; her parents and the Fashionistas having used up all the hot water. She dried off, got dressed and went downstairs."

And For His Next Stunt....

It looks like Mack is going all-in for Dare Day, and I'm a little curious about who dared him to do this stunt. Kevin seems like a likely candidate, but since when does Mack listen to anything Kevin says? No, my money is on Jodie. If he accepts her dare, she'll accept his dare to...ask her parents for an hour of free time.

For those who aren't so daring, today is also World Milk Day! Jake's probably going to celebrate, because of milk's calming properties. Calming right up until he remembers that milk has cholesterol, that is.
