Vroooooom!

Stacy is totally hyped for the anniversary of the first Indianapolis 500 race, which happened 115 years ago today! Wait...does that mean that the Indianapolis 500 is...out of date?! Nooooo!

It could be worse, though, as instead of being unfashionable Stacy could meet the same fate as Joan of Arc, whose feast day is today. Daria could celebrate by ordering either a steak or a stake, but I strongly recommend choosing the first one. Either way, someone or something will end up well cooked.

Finally, Daria and Jane could spend the day writing or drawing, because today is National Creativity Day. Of course, with their luck they'll both be hit by writer's block and there will be no creativity to be had at all.

"Always wear your sunscreen!"

Stacy's showing off some dramatic tan lines this year in time for Sun Screen Day, and after her experience at the nursing home Brittany is unlikely to ever forget hers. If you run out, like Quinn did, just head over to Payday and pick up a few gallons. Andrea can point you to the right aisle if you need help.

You'll definitely want to lather up if you decide to watch the Indianapolis 500, which is happening today. Stacy might even pull herself away from that too-friendly dog and join in the race, if her post-IICY? credit alter ego is anything to go by.

Vroom, Vroom!

Stacy's thrilled to race in the Indianapolis 500, which starts today! I shudder to think what Sandi would say about her clothes and dirty face, but take a look at Stacy and consider whether or not she cares right now.

Today is also the anniversary of the birth of Ian Fleming, whose James Bond character undoubtedly played a part in inspiring Daria's Melody Powers stories. If I remember right, Upchuck is also a fan, which makes me wonder what his reaction to Melody would be. On second thought, perhaps we're better off not knowing.

Finally, today is the anniversary of the episode "Life in the Past Lane," which aired on this day in 2001. We got to meet Nathan, who is among the least-liked characters in fandom. But hey, at least he's more popular than Ken Edwards!

Fanfic Update!
  • Cops And Robbers And Magic, by psychotol (part 26): "The corridors around the dormitories had gotten a bit smoky with that acetylene cylinder had been burning away until Carrie telekinetically shut it off from the washroom."

  • Daria's Life's Lottery, by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "At least Jodie's at Grove Hill. There's one friendly face – also Upchuck's there, heyoooo – in amongst a sea of assholes." (Part 8) (Part 9)

  • Fates Entwined, by Deep Metal (part 1): "And so it began. After four years of high school, Daria was finally where she wanted to be, in college."

  • Fidelity, Integrity, Bravery And So On... (Hiding in Plain Sight), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "'Happy birthday, Carlyle.' Julia Carlyle didn't even look up as Tobias Fornell tossed a package onto the table next to the chaise lounge on which she reclined. 'Nice furniture, kid. Teak?'"

  • Greater Love, by arandomshipper (part 2): "A typical family dinner that night saw Jake alternating between blissful inanities and sudden angry outbursts, while Helen's attempts to start meaningful conversations were constantly interrupted by phone calls."

  • Slap, by elainefr (part 1): "Slap! The sound could be heard from across the room where Jane was standing and talking two new prospective dates at the party that she was attending."

Racing Dust AND Compost Dirt? Ewwww!

Looks like Stacy just won the Indianapolis 500, which takes place today. I don't know what Waif Magazine would say about that dirt on her face, but I don't think Stacy really cares right now.

This is also Learn About Composting Day, so I'd suggest talking to Willow to get some advice. Or, if she's getting a little frustrated with the hippie lifestyle, you might want to ask someone else.

Whatever You Do, Don't Wear Sandals Around Him

Andrea is looking very statuesque (ha, ha) because today is the anniversary of the day the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in 1922. We could go ask Brittany about how Lincoln died, but I'd prefer to keep my sanity in one piece, thank you.

It was also on this day in 1911 that the first Indianapolis 500 was run. This is an important fact for Future Stacy who, according to the end credits of Is It College Yet?, will one day be a race car driver.

Fanfic Update!
  • Cassaoke (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part III), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "Tom parked his Jaguar on the kerb just outside his destination. He looked at the house and got out of the car, making his way to the front door. Almost as soon as he rang the doorbell, the door swung open and he saw the familiar red hair and glasses of Cassidy Hemming in front of him, an excited looking grin on her face."

  • Daria: College Pains Redux, by James the Lesser (parts 8 and 9): "On Saturday morning Daria wakes up. 'I'm on my floor, why?' Daria sits up and feels her head pounding. 'Damn, drinking, what the hell was I thinking?'" (Part 9)

  • The Fall Before The Pride (Ideas!), by Princess_Pasta (COMPLETE!): "'My dear Pope, you must be mistaken.' --- wiped his wire-rimmed glasses with a cleaning cloth while Tom Sloane reclined in a leather armchair. 'I'm serious, Pat, ---.' The name alone was enough to sour Tom's mood."

  • Jane's Body, by Princess-Pasta (COMPLETE!): "The road sign leading to the small, rural community was more of a running gag to Daria Morgendorffer than an invitation to the nonexistent tourists. It made the town sound evil and scary or at least like it had some interesting history...which it didn't."

  • Jane's Tangle, by Snow-Kitty (part 1): "Anthony DeMartino stared despondently into the glass of eight-year-old scotch sitting in front of him, his head slumped in misery as he contemplated the events of that day. It had been his third week as acting principal of Lawndale High School, and the public education system had already been made a mockery of at his fist board meeting for the term."

  • Line Up (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "Leaving the house, Daria made her way to Casa Lane. She got to the front door and knocked, but got no answer. She could faintly hear music coming from inside the house, so decided to let herself in. Once inside, she could hear the music more clearly and was confused."

  • The Machine, by DIsaac and Excellent S (part 2): "Griffin: Before I begin, you may notice that Tiffany and Tori are not with me. Reason is because... what I'm about to say is very personal."

  • Oh, Danny Boy, by Indigo (part 3): "'Low self-esteem is a terrible thing to deal with so it is a good thing that I don't have it. What I do have is low esteem for any female that thinks that she can use me in her little schemes to get to my brother Danny. Oh and just to let you know ladies, he feels the same way about that'"

  • Star Trek: Daria - Resurrection, by echopapa (parts 6 and 7): "Captain Jean-Luc Picard was a slim man of medium height. He was balding, (very), with a thin fringe of white hair around the back of his head. He wore a red tunic with four pips on the collar. 'Allow me,' he said with a rich, cultured British accent, shaking Daria's hand, his eyes shining with friendliness. 'I am sorry that duty has kept me from making your acquaintance until now.'" (Part 7)

  • Unnamed story ([Iron Chef – Round Robin – Free For All] Time Loops), by Wraith (part 18): "Daria gestured. Against one wall was a monstrosity of pipes, pressure chambers, tubing, valves and nozzles. Jane blinked. 'I didn't know you were taking up modern art.'"

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "AUSTIN - Backed by a costumed paramilitary armed with home-made weaponry, the gang leader Daria Morgendorffer has toppled police stations and government buildings across Highland County, Texas. The National Guard is mobilising to..."

The Fast and the Fashionable

On this day in 1911, the first Indianapolis 500 race was run. I'm pretty sure Waif wasn't a sponsor back then, but I'm sure Stacy would have kicked some serious butt if she'd been around at the time.

We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties. Please Stand By.

The very first Indianapolis 500 was held on this day a mere 98 years ago. Cool as it was, it was not cooler than the Kentucky Derby, however. (Sorry, little bit of local-city rivalry creeping in there.) At right we see Trent's unsuccessful attempt to duplicate that historic event.

  • Omega Omega, by Smileyfax (Part 6): "Lucy, I'm home!" Jane cried out with a faux-Cuban accent. "You got some 'splainin to do!" "Jane..." Jane turned at the voice. "Penny?"
PPMB
  • Lawndale's Finest: The Dark Knight, by NightGoblyn (Chapter 4, Part 3): Jane grabbed another slice of pizza and shook her head. “Can she get away with that? Isn’t there something in the Constitution about freedom of the press? I clearly remember DeMartino talking about it last year.” “It’s her press,” Quinn answered. “She has final say over what it prints. It’s not fair, but I don’t think there’s anything we can do about it.”
  • Regifted, by Ajar (Part 3): Jane leaned against the lockers in the usual hallway in the usual fashion, ignoring the usual people, but something was certainly amiss. This day is going to go incredibly slowly. At least with Daria I had someone intelligent to talk to. Darn it if she didn't just brighten up the day with her pessimism. “Hi, Jane,” Brittany said. “Umm... where's Daria?” “Daria doesn't go here anymore,” Jane said. “Ms. Li basically forced her out.”
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part II), by jtranser (COMPLETE!): Evgenia, the palace antiquities curator, found herself invisibly bound hand and foot, her clothes scattered on the tessellated travertine and marble floor and an angry Daria standing over her holding the Respighest, fully charged and rippling moires of crackling energy.
  • Unnamed story (Dead Like Me crossover), by Pinkminx (Part 3): Daria sighed. She hated to admit it, but it was cool watching herself being torn apart and put back together, although she found it depressing that the first man to see her fully undressed was the one that was readying her for burial. One thought resonated through her mind: Don't try and cop a feel, you old necrophiliac bastard. [Story was started here, then moved here] (FF.net).
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Famous Movie Lines), by Dennis (COMPLETE!): "Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine." Daria said sotto voce from behind the bar, as her sister strolled in with a cheery smile, her fashionista friends in tow.
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Famous Movie Lines), by Disco 316 (COMPLETE!): Sandi addressed the women gathered around her while Quinn stood silently behind her. "The first rule of Fashion Club is that you do not talk about Fashion Club. The second rule of Fashion Club is you do not talk about Fashion Club."
  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Famous Movie Lines), by Gouka Ryuu (COMPLETE!): "But Tom, Tom, Tom!" Daria nearly shouted as the young man who had been making to leave but had stopped and turned to see what her outburst was about. "Tom, if you go, where will I go? What will I do?"
  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fanfic Should Have: TGIF), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): Quinn Morgendorffer walked happily towards the Fashionable Table at the Lawndale High School lunch room. She was wearing a brand new fashionable pair of expensive designer tennis shoes with pink shoelaces and she was looking towards the Three Js fawning all over her. Instead, she saw the Three Js fawning over... Jane Lane.

Been There, Done That, Got the T-Shirt

Today is the feast day for Saint Joan of Arc, but we've already discussed Ms. Arc's trouble-filled rise to sainthood in an earlier posting. Today is also the anniversary of the first running of the Indianapolis 500, but we've already covered the Indy here, and we've also shown a picture of Andrea as the statue of Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., which was dedicated long ago on this day.

Today is the birthday of M. J. Pollard! Oh, wait. That's Michael Pollard, the actor, not the renown webmaster of Outpost Daria, Martin Pollard. Rats. Skip that.

Ah, here we go! Mel Blanc was born long ago today. He provided the voices of many many many many many Warner Brothers cartoon characters, plus Woody Woodpecker, also already discussed . . but not Daria. Damn.

Sorry, there isn't anything Daria-ish about today. Maybe someone else knows of something so I have something less bogus to post next year at this time. Have your people call my people.

"Gentlemen, like, start your engines, or whatever."

The 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500 is over, and someone won. Hooray! I have trouble seeing Trent in the Indy 500, though. It would be too fast for him.

Cynigal is asking if anyone will be around Portland, Oregon, for a Dariacon during the week of June 16. Write back here if you will be thereabouts.

On this day, 83 years ago, schoolteacher John T. Scopes was indicted for teaching evolution. This led to the famous (i.e., infamous) Scopes Trial, which proved that if we didn't really evolve from monkeys, we should have.

This is also the day when, 47 years ago, President John F. Kennedy made his famous speech in which he announced that the United States would put a man on the moon before the decade was out. And so it was done, and then everyone forgot to go back.

Richard Lobinske has updated the 2008 Daria Visual Fanworks listing once again (PPMB, SFMB). Go, thou, and see wonders beyond imagining. I love it.

And Cypher, Dennis, and WacoKid have added some amazing ficlets to the Iron Chef called Autobiography. You have to check it out.

PPMB
  • Avalon, by legendeld (COMPLETE!): “I’d be more worried about yourselves at this point.” Quinn said as she teleported in the room. Things went bad right after that.
  • D: The Last Cynic, by CDM (continued): "If he's the last man on Earth, I'll be worshipping Sappho so quick."
  • Falling Into College 62: Run It Up the Mast (Part 5): Michael paused in thought and then said, "Jane, can you and your friends do something for me?"
  • Infected, by legendeld (Parts 4 and 5): “You still don’t believe in guardian angels?”
  • A Little Vacation, by Doggieboy (Epilogue 3): “You win a kewpie doll,” Daria said as she quickly lifted the pistol, cocked it, and fired.
  • The Other Side of Time: Witness to the Monkey Show, by The Sidhe (continued): Has the reason for "Mad Dog" Morgendorffer's bad attitude been discovered?
  • Reign of the Darias: Life as a Corpse, by Lorenzo Sauchelli (Parts 1 and 2): This was probably not how Daria thought her reunion with a summer camp acquaintance would go. A new Daria/Harry Dresden story, though the previous one isn't finished yet.
  • Snuff the Rooster, by Cypher (continued): “Daaaaaaaam! You scored!” An honest-to-gosh Jane/Upchuck shipper. Hang on.
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part II), by jtranser (continued): Every good plot requires an injection of comic relief, and so it's time for the clown to take the stage. NOTE: In the next section is the classic Daria fanfic line: "Crystallization rate is 27 microboogers per second." I love it.
  • Upon the Torches of the Stars (formerly Reaper), by Ray (COMPLETE!): Quinn takes on a metric ton of supervillains, but does she win?
