Ground Control to Major Jodie

Jodie is recreating the first spacewalk from this day in 1965 for, I don't know, Spacewalk Club or something. Anything for one more activity to go on the college applications, unless she's just doing this to finally put some real distance between herself and her parents. In that case, I wish her the best of luck! By the way, if you don't tell her she's holding the wrong flag, I won't, either.

Fanfic Update!
  • Are We There Yet?, by WildDogJJ (parts 1 - 3): "Quinn is seated behind her desk meeting with a client. The client is a balding but otherwise good looking middle aged man named Sullivan. His business is a travel agency. Sullivan: Miss Morgendorffer, that suggestion to move my business online was a stroke of genius. My business it up 98% since GreatEscapes.com went up." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Clash of the Families (Quinn, Season 3), by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Jake and Helen's relaxing evening has just been interrupted by the arrival of her sister, Rita, and her mother, Emma. 'Mom, Rita this is a surprise!'" (Part 3)

  • Equal Fights 2: Out-Trump-Ed, by DocForbin (COMPLETE!): "(We see something akin to the old Cartoon Network 'Cartoon Cartoons' opening sequence except instead of the Cartoon Network logo, we see the Mark Zero Fan Fiction Unlimited logo, which zooms out as we see the words "Exclusive Creations" materialize, then we see Bubbles' head pop out of the "O" in "Creations".)"

  • Search Engine Obfuscation, by WellTemperedClavier (parts 7 - 10): "Daria awoke to the worst headache of her life. It was a headache that had somehow spread to her entire body. Every bone and organ groaned in protest as she cracked open her eyes, the dim light as bright as the surface of the sun." (Part 8) (Part 9) (Part 10)

  • Unnamed story (LLH Short Entries : Thread #2), by Roentgen (part 112): "As the Legionnaires entered the Virtual Reality Training Room, Karen tugged at the collar around her neck. 'This feels like a leash,' she said. 'What are with these things?'"

That's One Small Step for an Overachiever....

Today is the anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969! That's worth celebrating even if you aren't a space travel fanatic. Jodie's recreating the big event, perhaps as a nice boost to her resume.

In more recent news, today is also the anniversary of the airing of "See Jane Run" in 1998. Jane didn't make it to the moon, but she did get to wipe that contemptuous smirk off Ms. Morris's face. Equally satisfying, in its own way.

Fanfic Update!
  • The 180 Degree Turn Ch. 1: New Page, but Same Book, by Walter Kovacs (part 1): "Before Elsie could do more than roll her eyes in annoyance, her door opened and the youngest member of the triplets (by five minutes) stuck his head in and smiled at them. 'Hey guys, It appears that we have new neighbors.' He informed his siblings; 'They’re moving in right now.'"

  • All's Fare (A kinda-sorta IC - No Gas!), by DeacBlue (part 2): "'Breaking news!' the announcer said. 'Wildfires have gotten out of control in the national forest, twenty miles west of Lawndale. Reports are that a group or groups of campers are in danger of being cut off, and emergency services do not have enough fuel to reach them.'"

  • Armored Cynic Daria, Episode 2: The 8th Circuit, by RX-87 (part 6): "EXT: Daria sits on the roof of her house, looking up at the night sky. DARIA: All my life, I wanted that kind of power."

  • At the Crossroads...(Chapter 12), by oni (COMPLETE!): "'Quinn, I apologize if I come to this conclusion, but are you using Black Friday as a shopping day for yourself?' Caving in, Quinn replied with defeat in her voice, 'Yeah.' Sandi mentally held herself back from saying anything else to Quinn, but as the four of them entered the mall, she did have only one thought running through her head. 'I’ve been tricked into waking up for your typical shopping outing... I’ve been tricked into waking up for your typical shopping outing... I’ve been tricked...'"

  • A Brothers Duty, by Gnome (COMPLETE!): "I feel someone watching me. Another late night traveler, a huge specimen. She observes me with tired eyes. Her reflexes are slow, she cannot possibly prove a challenge to me. I allow myself a slight smile. But I must not let myself grow too complacent. We all need the same thing, and most of the prey had already been taken."

  • Ethan Yeager in Lawndale: Ch 9 Soaking Up Summer, by Shiva (part 4): "Daria wished to whatever deities were out there ranging from the Apophis to Zeus that she could temporarily shut down her brain for the duration of what she was having to endure for her second dinner at the Sloanes. 'Daria!' Quinn whined, 'Come on out now, it couldn’t have taken you that long to change into the next outfit.'"

  • Good Nutrition (Scenes no Daria Fanfic should ever have: Embrace the Madness), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'It's just like old Tim said,' Daria said after burping and wiping her face with a napkin, 'Good nutrition is important too.'"

  • The Hunter Home from the Hill, by DeacBlue (part 12): "Daria could hear Jane's smile over the line. 'So what's up, amiga?' 'Well, besides the fact that I want to see my newly-minted girlfriend,' Daria's smile widened until it almost split her face, 'Quinn has some questions about what happened last night. Can you come over?'"

  • Immortal Blood, by Shiva (part 7): "Then just as he began to head on out, O’Neill put what he thought was a comforting hand on Skylar’s shoulder and brushed the skin of his neck. 'Oh dear,' O’Neill breathed in shock as he felt... 'You’re so cold Skylar, are you sure you’re alright?' 'Lawsuit!' Skylar snapped at him with an unknowing flash of deathly blue seeping through his illusionary baby-blues and causing the fear of the Grim Reaper to grip his teacher’s bowels."

  • It's Only Another Daria/Quinn Torture Story (Scenes no Daria Fanfic should ever have: Embrace the Madness), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'People see us everywhere / They think you really care.' Sang the beautiful blond cowboy while strumming his guitar."

  • Kinetic Adventures, by MetalShadowX (part 9): "'You think you'll get away with this?' 'As long as you want your identity kept secret, then yes I do.' 'Just who the hell are you to blackmail me like this?!' 'Don't you recognize me? I'm disappointed in you,' she smirked, 'big sis.'"

  • The Kissing Book, by DeacBlue (parts 6 - 8): "'Jane, I love you, so please don't be offended when I tell you that that's so stupid that it just might -' Daria picked that moment to step into a patch of sand and disappear." (Part 7) (Part 8)

  • A Lift (IC: Sam Stack), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "'Thanks for the lift,' Jane said as she climbed into the passenger seat of the black sports car. 'You sure about not calling a wrecker?' the brown-haired muscular god asked with some concern, eyeing the beat up blue corvette on the side of the road."

  • Long, Cold School Year (Iron Chef - Doug, Susan and Ramona), by LadieT (COMPLETE!): "'Ramona Thatcher,' the teacher said with a slight growl in her voice as she looked directly at the blonde girl sitting near the back of the class. 'Here,' Ramona replied trying to hide from the glare the teacher was shooting in her direction."

  • Meeting at the Park (Iron Chef: Fresh takes on Veronica Morgendorffer), by Wassersauefer (COMPLETE!): "'Um... hi?' 'AAAH!!' Startled she jumped, her coke bottle falling and crashing onto the ground, glass and the beverage splattering in every direction. Her heart hammering and her breathing short she looked at the intruder that shocked her. 'Damn, was that necessary?'"

  • Operation Glitterberries: Chapter 08, by BF110C4 (part 3): "Entering once more to the bathroom she could clearly see the path that the bullet took after missing her, going through the open door and the shower’s curtain, to embed itself on the wall. Just two inches down, or half a second more to aim... She was damn lucky."

  • Revenge from the Grave (Iron Chef: Chateau de Morgendorffer), by Reven384 (COMPLETE!): "'I'm still a bit surprised mother left me anything. I figured she'd leave everything to Rita,' Helen said before bitterly adding, 'Then again she left Rita most of her possessions and money.'"

  • Rude Awakening Ep 11: Sucks To Be Them!, by DIsaac (part 4): "STACY: So we will be putting our REAL plan in action as we speak.... Operation Wicked Witch. The plan is simple. We will be working throughout the day to ruin Mrs. Griffin's day in ways small to epic. The plan is to make her think Boston Sucks as a place to live and make her hate our fair city to the point that when she thinks of Boston.... She'll hate this place with every fiber of her being. It will mean that she will leave You, Tom and future child to be named later..... Alone and safe here in New England."

  • Sexy Daria: Sexy Cute Models, by Shiva (part 6): "'Oh you're so slender and pouty,' Claude said in admiration of Daria Morgendorffer while Romonica’s eyes danced with thoughts of how much money she could make off this girl, 'And even those glasses are cute, but could you take them off please?' 'Oh ducky,' Daria replied very sweetly before her voice turned to ice, 'I need them to see scam artists.'"

  • Slumber Party (Scenes no Daria Fanfic should ever have: Embrace the Madness), by JoeMerl (COMPLETE!): "As President of the Fashion Club, I declare that this meeting-slash-slumber party can official begin,' Sandi said. 'Now, what should we do first?"

  • Unexpected Hookup: A Bigger Bite, by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "Jane continued and her voice grew more distant, 'As I saw the two of you together I... I became afraid.' Jane grew quiet after that, which forced Daria to ask, 'Afraid of what?' 'Of losing you Daria,' Jane replied sadly, 'You’re the only friend I’ve got.'"

  • Unnamed story (IC: Sam Stack), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "Sam sighed in post-coital bliss, his body exhausted but feeling completely satisfied after having the best sex he had ever had so far."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Chateau de Morgendorffer), by RX-87 (COMPLETE!): "'Well, during the war, the cousin was roped into fighting under General Barksdale and got to meet his niece while on leave. Not long after that, she came down with TB and had to spend some time in a sanatorium. Just about the time her new baby brother, my great grandfather, was born...'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef - Let's Play Sports), by LadieT (COMPLETE!): "'Eight - ' the sound of slashing filled the air ' - make that nine. You just had to want to go to the London Games.' Jane said as the blood squirted from the now dismembered zombie body."

  • A Wish for the Perfect Night (IC: Sam Stack), by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): "A rose was laid outside her door as always. She picked it up and sniffed it a little before putting it in her hair and gong inside. Code for meet you in an hour. He pulled his car up and she got in."

One Small Step for an Overachiever....

On this day in 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon. Jodie follows in his footsteps on the left, although it may be part of yet another extracurricular activity. Vice President of the Moonwalkers Club? I suppose it beats shredding documents for congressmen.

Fanfic Update!
  • 86 Bottles of Beer: I Spy, with My Extra Eye, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "'Are you sure this is the place?' Stacy asked doubtfully as they stood outside a nondescript office building. 'Well, it's not like they write "SECRET KAOS LAIR" in big letters on the front of all their locations, do they?' 99 replied. 'Hey, you think we could talk them into doing that?' Kevin asked. 'Because that would be really helpful.'"

  • Alternatepalooza, by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): "Talk soon turned to the festival and after a bit of hemming and hawing, it was decided that Daria and Jane would accompany the men on the condition they provided gas money. With a last tongue-in-cheek remark tossed over her shoulder, Daria followed Jane up the stairs and out of the house. Trent only noticed his jaw had been clenched shut when the door closed behind her."

  • Anithing Is Possible (Iron Chef: Biological Parents), by Born Yesterday: "It was all here in a sack of papers. The real her hat she uess her parens had just negleced to mention. A young red haired girl around 15 holding a new born as she sat in he hospital bed. A melancholy look in her green eyes."

  • Another Lawndale's Episode, by Silver (part 3): "'Okay,' Daria said, gasping for air. 'We're going where?' 'This way!' C.C. said, bolting down what had to be the third or fourth side street. Daria would've groaned if she'd been able to spare the air."

  • Bloodlines (Iron Chef: Biological Parents), by Hyrin (COMPLETE!): "The paper was laying on the bed, but Quinn seemed almost afraid to approach it. Daria took a deep breath and picked it up, scanning it as she said, 'What’s got you so...Oh.' She stared at the paper for a long time, then walked over to Quinn and gave her an uncharacteristically sincere hug."

  • Cat Door from the Stars (Crossovers Still Crossing Over), by gwrtheyrn (COMPLETE!): "I mention her talk about angles because it suggests something DeWitt-Clinton had told me of his awful dreams. He said that the geometry of the dream-place he saw was abnormal, non-Euclidean, and loathsomely redolent of spheres and dimensions apart from ours. Now an unlettered military woman felt the same thing, whilst gazing at the terrible reality."

  • Daria/Dorian Ch. 15: Summertime Blues, by LadieT (part 6): "One night Dorian was sitting in the living room watching television when Quinn came running into the house upset and went straight into her room. Should we go find out what happened? Yeah, she seemed really upset. Dorian walked up the stairs and could hear Quinn crying through her door."

  • Daria is Raven's Apprentice, by project pegasus: "Raven: How dare you accuse Starfire! Starfire: But Friend Raven, didn't you say that we had to consider every possibility?" (New part)

  • Daria Loves Cock!, by Chris Tucker (COMPLETE!): "The craving hit Daria after her second class of the day at Lawndale High." (It's SFW. I promise.)

  • Daria, or the Confession of a Single Lonely Male, by Arena del Sur: "I am now faced with the distasteful task of recording the very moment in which our paths began to separate. If her share in the ardors she kindled had been nonexistent, a little fire of hope still was burning in my heart. But I was blind and fool, my school-girl wolphet had me at her mercy. With the human element dwindling, the closeness, the chance, and the torture only increased; and Daria took advantage of this."

  • Dark Future: Road Worrier, by Charles RB (part 2): "'Girls, I've had a job offer in Maryland.' Helen took a deep breath. 'In the Lawndale Policed Zone.' Quinn squealed like she'd heard school had been napalmed again. 'How?' asked Daria and Jake simultaneously, and that bothered Daria because her father should've known surely?"

  • First Impressions, by JPAGC (part 2): "'What about Daria?' Quinn’s smile disappearance now took a few more seconds that it had in earlier occasions. Eventually her face registered a carefully pleasant and neutral expression, with a smile a fraction of what had been. 'Daria?' 'Yes, your sister Daria.' Beat. 'How do you two get along?' Quinn pressed her lips together for a moment. 'Alright, I guess.' Her body was now completely still, in stark contrast to what had been just some moments before."

  • God Save the Esteem Episode 29: Daria's High Score Rejected Scene #27 (Scenes That Should Be: Breakfast of Zombie Champions), by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "Daria narrowed her eyes and in loud, flat tones, sang out: 'If you've had sex in the last thirty minutes then you know you wanna sing with me!' Stacy leapt to her feet, quickly donning her Geek Stacy glasses: 'I just had see-eee-eeex -'"

  • God Save the Esteem 32: Nuts to Work, by Charles RB (COMPLETE!): "Unable to see a sensible solution, Daria decided to give her sister a stupid one to see what would happen. 'Hazmat suit.' 'Suit?!' 'Let me rephrase that.'"

  • It’s the Local Fetish? (Iron Chef: The Bet), by OverlordMikey (COMPLETE!): "'So you lost bet with your sister.' Tom said well having difficultly looking her in the eye. Daria just nodded. 'I thought she would just give me a makeover.' Daria sighed. 'This is by far the most embarrassing moment of my life..'"

  • The James Lane Chronicles Chapter 6, by InvisibleDan (part 6): "James smiled and said, 'Wow. You're my hero, Daria.' The corner of her mouth started to creep up but then Daria said, 'I'm not a hero. I don't know how I did it, going into the water and pulling Kevin out. It's almost like that Orwell essay where he shot an elephant. He didn't want to do it, but because there were so many people watching it's like he didn't have a choice...'"

  • Man of the House, by Smijey: "'Look, if you're worried about the age thing, sixteen is legal in this state, and I'm seventeen, and --' 'Why?' I think my question caught her off guard. 'Why?' she echoed."

  • Rude Awakening Ep. 7: Don't Sign Me Up!, by DIsaac (part 6): "JODIE: I'm afraid to ask this. How did you, Ted DeWitt-Clinton get banned from the library? TED: Oh that's easy. Ted DeWitt-Clinton don't take no crap from the man."

  • Save the Last Trance for Me, by jtranser: "'Uh oh, do I know this person who's going to spread My Word? And Jane, why did you cue all that ominous background music?' Jane gave Daria a bemused smirk: 'Seemed appropriate. And yes, yes, You do. Do you remember Your camp reunion?' 'Oh no. No. You don't mean...' 'She who worships at Your shrine, the one known as Amelia...' 'Oh no!'"

  • Secret History, by LadieT (COMPLETE!): "'I really wish you would let everyone see the real you,' he whispered. 'I can't - I have an image to maintain,' she sighed. 'Surely it couldn't hurt your image too badly if you answered just one question correctly in class,' He said as he began kissing her jawline."

  • Silent Melody, by Silver (part 4): "Daria tuned out the conversation. Yes, she was a suspect. And she was a suspect because she was a nova. Life was funny that way. She sat up and spared a look out the window. The sun hadn't quite set, but she preferred the solitude of her room to dealing with the constant gripes and whines of her father and sister, or the heated questioning of her mother. On the other hand, she was missing the arguement between her mother and her new principal. Oh, well- win some, lose some."

  • Stained Glass Shade (Iron Chef: Biological Parents), by RX-87 (COMPLETE!): "Most women he met in show business were so terribly high strung, but Hana was as laid back as they come, with a calm, soothing voice and a carefree demeanor that made him feel at ease with her no matter what happened. He had a great deal of respect for the girl. Despite the fact that he was an established name in the industry and she was still struggling, she never once asked him for any kind of help with her career. She wanted to do everything herself. What ever happened to her?"

  • Stolen at Birth (Iron Chef: Biological Parents), by Grifter74 (COMPLETE!): "'Your Sandi? But I'm Sandi.' Sandi said confused. 'As if. My Sandi died just after birth, and I got one of the doctors to switch her with another. Some family had twins, so I took one of them. I should have known better than to try turning a sow's ear into a pearl.'"

  • True Cynicism (Scenes That Should Be: Breakfast of Zombie Champions), by Greystar (COMPLETE!): "'Hey,' Jane said in a shaky trying not to be frightened voice. 'What do you want?' The redneck in question asked derisively. 'I'll-' Jane swallowed as her voice broke. 'I'll let you do what ever you want to to me for fifty bucks.'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Biological Parents), by Hyrin (COMPLETE!): "'Girls, I need to talk to you.' Daria and Quinn had just finished breakfast and were about to leave when Jake said this. Sighing, they both sat down."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Biological Parents), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): "'Uh, like, Amy-Wan never told you what happened to your father and junk, right?'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Breakfast at Tiffany's), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): "Tom and Daria sat at the table, picking listlessly at the food they had ordered. Finally, unable to take the tension after Daria's last statement anymore, Tom finally spoke up."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Friendship is Magic Fics), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): "'Okay, kitten,' Quinn said as she lowered the polarized goggles over her eyes, 'are we ready to light this candle?'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef - Jodie the Inventor), by Chris Tucker: "'Inside the wire', as the Army said, at MAE, it was different. She was Josephine Delores Landon, M.A, B.A. She was the director and head researcher of the BioChem Labs. She had half a dozen patent applications pending in her name alone. Her people were doing breakthrough research on antibiotics and anti-malarial drugs. Her department was well on its way to saving the 'thousand lives' that Master Sergeant DeMartino spoke of all those months ago, her very first day at MAE."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: The Bet), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): "'Well, you'll be very unhappy to know that I picked out the absolute worst outfit ever for you to wear,' Quinn continued, acting as if she were oblivious to her sister's discomfort. 'One that no one should ever be seen wearing. One that, like seriously, shouldn't even exist.'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: The Bet), by psychotol (COMPLETE!): "'What did Daria do this time?' groaned Helen. 'Quinn,' said Angela. 'Quinn? I thought her grades were up last month,' said Helen. 'This isn't about her grades, this is about her attitude.'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Three Ninjas), by Jim North (COMPLETE!): "Daria's reply was cut off by the sudden appearance of a throwing star in the wall next to her head. Without missing a beat, she popped the star from its new perch and flung it straight back the way it came. The ninja standing in the shadows between the lockers artfully snatched the star out of the air even as he was moving forward and to the side, trying to flank the two high school students."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes That Should Be: Breakfast of Zombie Champions), by Ranger Thorne (COMPLETE!): "Mike looked at the shadow standing on a pile of crates. With the moon behind them, only someone familiar with the deepest nightmares of the criminals of Gotham City would know it was a woman. But not just any woman. 'The Batwoman,' Mike said into the radio just as the figure seemed to spread her wings and fly toward him."

"From outer space to in your face!"

On this day in 1962, the Friendship 7 was launched. The pilot, John Glenn, became the first American and third person to orbit the Earth. Astronaut Jodie salutes him, although you've got to wonder about that smirk on her face. Either she just spotted some hot alien beefcake or she's relieved to have finally found a way to get away from her many extracurricular activities.

One Small Step for Jodie, One Long Run for Jane Lane

As Jodie Landon reminds us, 41 years ago the Eagle landed on the Moon. As Daria and Jane remind us, "See Jane Run" premiered on MTV 12 years ago. An important day in history, indeed. Today turns out to be critically important in one fanfic, as you will see. Yesterday will be an important day 17 years in the future according to another fanfic, as you will see.

The best part of "See Jane Run" was, of course, seeing Jane. Our Heroine (Jane) was magnificent, but her sidekick Daria was a wet blanket with her constant whining and acting sorry for herself and complaining about Jane doing something great. What heights could Jane have achieved had Daria not been such a pain in the butt? Alas, we will never know.

However, to commemorate the anniversary of "See Jane Run," you can download a PC screensaver that shows Jane running, saved from an MTV website by the WayBack Machine at Archive.org. Click on the link (an .exe file), save it, run it, be amazed. I adore this. The file (called "Run, Jane, Run" as a screensaver) was posted online about 10 years ago and works perfectly, with sun and moon and stars and everything! Jane sure can run a long time.

To the Moon

Forty years ago today, Apollo 11 landed on the Moon. I remember watching that live on TV. It was the greatest.

This is an interesting day in other ways. "See Jane Run" premiered eleven years ago today, one of my favorite episodes because OH is the star (Jane, of course). We learn that Daria is more dependent on Jane than Jane is on Daria, when Daria mumbles to herself: "Jane. On a school team. That's pathetic. Hey, if she's the pathetic one, why am I talking to myself? And, more importantly, why am I waiting for a reply?"

We also find the beginnings of the Barksdale Legs meme:
  • Daria: What happened to your come-and-get-it heels?
  • Quinn: Ha-ha, Daria. I decided I shouldn't wear shoes that kill me just because they make my legs look hot.
  • Helen: Why, Quinn, how mature.
  • Quinn: I mean, my legs look hot no matter what I wear. They'd probably even look good in those things you have on.
We do need a fanfic about Daria's new bf, Knuckles.

Speed Demons in Space!

On this day only 36 years ago, two crewmen from Apollo 16 landed on the moon. The astronauts used a lunar rover during their exploration and achieved a land speed record (on the moon) of 11 mph (18 kph), which is still the fastest that any wheeled vehicle has gone on that body. It was a guy thing.

A pic of glasses-wearing Quinn from Kara Wild's Driven Wild Universe has been added to an earlier post. Kinda fun to modify that one basic picture of her.

Time for bed. Peace out, more after the sun comes up.
