No One Will Be Saluting Him

On the one hand, I think that someone should explain to Upchuck that Run it up the Flagpole and See if Anyone Salutes It Day isn't meant to be taken literally, and you aren't supposed to run yourself up there. On the other hand, while he's up there he won't be bothering anyone, so maybe we should just let him stay right where he is.

Actually, this would be an interesting way to celebrate World Introvert Day, because there's only room for one person up there so there's no need to worry about being overwhelmed by other people. Daria would be happy enough up there as long as she was able to bring a book.

I hope she chooses a book by Isaac Asimov, because it's both the anniversary of his birth and National Science Fiction Day. Instead of reading a science fiction story, though, Daria could recreate the alien space babes look with Jane. It's probably safe to do so with Upchuck stuck on top of a flagpole.

He Sure Looks Uncomfortable. Good.

Looks like Upchuck is trying out Run up the Flagpole and See if Anyone Salutes Day, but I don't think anyone is going to salute him. Unless it's out of gratitude that he's taken himself out of contact with any and all females. I suppose I could explain to him how the holiday is meant to refer to a metaphor, but I think I like him better up there.

I suppose it's possible that he's just doing some weird new exercise, in which case I recommend he try celebrating National Personal Trainer Day instead. Quinn is exceptionally good a motivation; just ask Sandi. She can get anyone to swim, you cow! Swim!

Or maybe Upchuck was picked up by aliens and dropped onto the flagpole, which would be an interesting story idea and fits in perfectly with National Science Fiction Day! I'm sure Artie would be willing to read it, anyway.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Engineer and the Time Lady, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 23): "'We're almost there,' Andersen said. Albert could see the ice palace ahead. 'But, still, General Order One...'"

  • Extensions, by fridaythesavage (part 1): "'Welcome to "It's a Nutty, Nutty, Nutty World",' started Daria Morgendorffer 24th time that day."

Who's Feisty Now?

I see Upchuck has tragically misunderstood the point of Run it Up the Flagpole and See if Anyone Salutes Day. It's also very unlikely that anyone's going to salute, either. Still, at least he's safely away from everyone else, and that's good news.

Today is also National Science Fiction Day, and in honor of the holiday I present to you the entire Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror section of Outpost Daria Reborn! Holy cow, there's a lot of sci-fi Daria fanfic out there.

A Feisty Holiday

I think someone should explain to Upchuck that Run It up the Flagpole and See if Anyone Salutes It Day refers to ideas rather than to people. Still, I think that's a pretty good place to keep him, as long as he can keep his balance. I doubt anyone will be saluting, though.

Today is also National Science Fiction Day, in honor of author Isaac Asimov, who was born in this day in 1920. Daria and Jane might celebrate with another sci-fi convention, unless they think Artie might show up. If so, they'd be better off staying home.

Beats Being an Atomic Communist from Mars

Daria's in costume for National Science Fiction Day. Appropriately, this holiday takes place on the anniversary of sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov's birth in 1920.

Now that I think about it, though, that may not be a costume she's wearing. Perhaps the rumors about her being an alien love goddess were true...!

Cynic from Another Planet

Today is National Science Fiction Day, celebrated on this day in honor of author Isaac Asimov's birthday. Daria's getting into the spirit of things, although this won't help those "atomic Communist from Mars" rumors.

Don't forget to nominate for the 2012 Daria Fanworks Awards! The deadline is January 15th.

Fanfic Update!
  • A Cynical Earth, by RLobinske (part 1): "Going around her desk, Dorothy also sat down, while letting one hand rest on a wood and glass case set on the wall. Inside the case was a worn leather jacket covered with patches, including a prominent 'A' centered on the back. Dorothy looked across the desk and said, 'Welcome to A Charitable Earth.'"

  • Daria and Stacy (IC: Stacy Morgendorffer), by Shiva (part 1): "Stacy used the rear-view mirror to check on her big sister, in her combat boots, ratty jeans, black Nine Inch Nails shirt, glasses, but nicely combed auburn hair. She unknowingly returned Daria's smirk from earlier and thought once again, 'God my sister's cool.'"

  • DW: The Many Doctors, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 11): "The Doctor emerged from the TARDIS. 'What happened, everyone got captured?' he asked. 'Yes, we all put up a fight, but they were all captured,' Daniel said. 'We were lucky to escape!' Lana said. 'Right, one rescue party coming up!' the Doctor said."

  • Dylan, by J-D (parts 15c and 15d): "When they asked the man behind the counter about the shark, he pointed to a display case that housed only one huge tooth. 'What?!' exclaimed Rod, and Dylan could see that he was working himself up into a synthetic burst of outrage, the kind that Dylan recalled so well from their memorable trip to the Mall of the Millennium. He grabbed his friend by the sleeve and whispered in his ear." (Part 15d)

  • Forever Together, by ST91 (COMPLETE!): "The years had passed and it showed. Her face was furrowed by deep wrinkles and her hair, once black as pitch, had turned white as snow. Only her eyes had kept the same shade of sapphire blue they had when she was young."

  • Lawndale and Sandi Griffin's Genie (Chapter 8), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 6): "'You must be mistaken,' Quinn said, trying not to cave. 'Why do I do that?' 'I'm not mistaken!' Linda said. 'You are!' Nicole dared. 'I'm not mistaken. There is damage to my house and my sons both said that you were there!' Linda said."

  • Luna and the Moose, by Erin M. (part 5): "He snorted and stood up straight, straightening his vest. Time (and moose, apparently) waited for no pony. Less than three hours until dawn, with no guarantee the ambassador wouldn't show up unexpectedly early. He let out another sigh and turned to head for the west tower."

  • The Mageborn Cynic : Daria & the School of Magic, part 2, by peetz5050 (part 7): "Lady Quinn, wearing a travelling cloak, stepped forward first and dipped her a curtsey. 'Lady Joanna.' She began. 'Forgive me but I must depart. I have a prior invitation to attend dinner at the home of Lady Tio-Fan. I tried to get out of it because I wished to meet you properly and get to know you but you know what Royalty is like, she would not be gainsaid. She orders us around like servants sometimes I don't know who she thinks she is! It's not like she's even a member of our Royal family! But she...' 'Quinn!'"

  • Musical Theater, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "'So, The Hobbit beat out Django Unchained and Les Miserables!' Daria sat up from her comfy chair in the middle of the commons area. 'Why would you care about that, Quinn?'"

  • My New Nemesis, by Brain Camper (part 2): "Jane: Is that makeup or has 'The Infamous Thing' kept you up again? Daria, in a low, tired tone: Yeah, I borrowed makeup from Quinn just so you would ask me that question."

  • The Night Helen Saved Christmas, by Aloysius (part 3): "The first children had been bused in, and it wasn't quite what Steve expected. He had braced himself for a bunch of running, screaming kids - a bunch of brats, truthfully - but these kids came in slowly, very few walking under their own power. Several were in wheelchairs, and a couple used walkers. Children using walkers?, he thought. Good Lord, what happened to them?"

  • One (More) Little Thing, by peetz5050 (parts 21 and 22): "'Stop feeling so sorry for yourself and get rid of that, we need to talk!' Jake looked at her, then down at his glass, then back at her. 'Slainte!' He said and downed the whiskey. 'There, all gone. What is it now? I paid those bills as we agreed, I haven't forgotten anything.'" (Part 22)

  • Operation Glitterberries, by BF110C4 (part 11.2): "The worst part was that, as far as her body was concerned, the exercises he recommended were far more challenging that she expected. She was weak, and that was going to be a problem that she would need to live for a while until she could condition this new body to the old one's standards."

  • RA Holiday Special : The Holidays are just Crazy!, by DIsaac (part 8): "JODIE: You two have no morals. ALISON: What are morals? MELODY: I'm a politician. We don't even know what word is. Does it have a creamy center?"

  • The Remember That They All Served Affair, by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "Julia was caught between an abject state of awe and near-total embarrassment as she recognized all three of the men standing with the Legion Advisor – the two speaking to her, from her independent studies work at Quantico during her time as a Cadet Second Class, and the last - from her roommate Sherrie Klein's work, as she built a cornucopia of different tech-devices; lately, for medical purposes..."

  • Undying Love part 2, by BrownEyedBagel (part 2): "Mad Dog was enjoying what he was seeing. All he saw was scores of people who were willing to take up arms and use them without regret or remorse in defense of their loved ones. It brought back some fond memories of his time in the military."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Armed Teachers), by PrecambrianStudios (COMPLETE!): "Defoe withdrew something from her cabinet and displayed it to the class, some of whom suddenly tensed: an 18th century musket."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fic should have:Stupid, Silly and Disturbing), by BrownEyedBagel (COMPLETE!): "Daria slowly started to leave the room with a grim resolve. She looked at Jane and sighed heavily. All the hard work and planning; all the laughter and tears and everything in between ripped apart by one lone incident."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fic should have:Stupid, Silly and Disturbing), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "She smelled what was happening a nano second before her ears registered the sounds. A familiar siren song for anyone that lived among the rock n' roll set."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fic should have:Stupid, Silly and Disturbing), by SinisterExaggerator (COMPLETE!): "As Daria and Tom exited the pharmacy card section, they looked down to notice a magazine strewn upon the floor. As they perused the pictures inside, the subject matter soon became clear."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fic should have:Stupid, Silly and Disturbing), by SinisterExaggerator (COMPLETE!): "She tried moving her arms. With a thud, she hit...something. If some cosmic entity is playing games with me, she thought, he has my sense of humor. But if Dante is to be trusted, they're not tricksters as much as they are incinerators."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes that should be: Polite Requests), by LadieTAG (COMPLETE!): "'Hey Jane - can you hand me that book over there?' Daria asked pointing at the rather large book sitting on her nightstand."

  • What's Going On?, by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "Jane wasn't quite sure at first what the hell was going on, even after she downed three pots of coffee (and leaving the teacher's lounge quite barren of that special liquid) and rubbed her eyes very hard."

  • Worldhopper: Ring Shadow, by RLobinske (COMPLETE!): "He hung up the phone and looked around his command post. 'It's out of our hands, now. If any of you want to pray, this would be a good time.'" (Part 7)

A Very Sci-Fi Birthday!

Happy birthday to the late science fiction writer Isaac Asimov, who is believed to have been born on this day in 1920. I know there are at least a few Asimov fans in Daria fandom, so share your favorite Asimov work in the comments if you like!

Don't forget to send in your nominations for the 2011 Daria Fanworks Awards! You only have until January 10!

Fanfic Update!
  • Chaos Theory: The Esteem of the Cynic and the Eccentric, by Walter Kovacs (parts 2 - 4): "Haruhi scowled and stated in a curt tone of voice 'Quinn remember what mom said about you dating older boys after the Todd incident?' In a cold tone, Haruhi contineud with 'I'm sure you wouldn't like it if you were banned from dating until oh say age 18'. Daria raised an eyebrow at Haruhi's unusually hostile response to Quinn's query and made a note of it to talk to Haruhi about it." (Part 3) (Part 4)

  • Daria - Double Down, by neonhomer (part 16): "Quinn paused for a moment. 'I think that even though I have shunned you, never acknowledging that you are my sister, that you still deep down inside, love your little sister.' Daria looked at the floor. 'Yeah... really deep down.' Muttered Daria. 'Daria.' Said Jake from behind his paper. Daria shrugged, and looked at the floor. 'Yeah, well... IguessIdoloveyou.' Mumbled Daria."

  • John Lane 52: From the Last Step to the First, by RLobinske (part 3): "The corridor looked to be well on its way to being a post-apocalypse movie set. Random locker doors hung open. Loose papers lay scattered around overflowing trash cans while here and there were odd bits of cloth or other unidentifiable objects. 'And so it ends,' John said. 'Well, we have one more thing to do,' Daria said. 'Oh, yeah. Onward to the front office.'"

  • The Outers III: Was Blind But Now Can See, by The Angst Guy (part 1): "He hesitated before going on. 'It appears the Moon's orbit is changing. I was working on this development an hour ago when the government—' He glanced at Agent Hardesty '—once again came to my office and suggested my services were needed elsewhere.' Before the FBI agent could respond, Daria got a word. 'The Moon's orbit is changing? How?'"

  • Star Trek: A New Century: Time of Terror (Non-Daria), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "'Bridge to Captain,' the voice of the tactical officer came over the intercom. 'Report,' he said. 'We are receiving a distress call from a Federation freighter about two light years away,' the tactical officer said."

  • Unnamed story (just a little something...), by oni (part 3): "'I don't believe it! You knew "The Beavis and Butthead",' exclaimed a crazed fan. The guy had to be in his mid-thirties with greasy hair and braces. A name tag sticker with 'Artie' sat on his chest. Daria remembered there being an annual UFO convention nearby."

The Mighty Jane brings you... Inventors' Day!

The Mighty Jane shows off her latest suit of powered armor as we bring you Inventors' Day, which celebrates all inventors on this, the 163rd birthday anniversary of Thomas Edison. You go, girl. This is also the 72nd anniversary of the showing of the first science-fiction program on television, which was accomplished by the British, not the Americans.

Speaking of art, has Enigmawing created the Daria of Today?

Happy Science-Fiction Day!

Isaac Asimov, the immortal Russian-American science-fiction writer (and biochemist, science writer, fantasy writer, mystery writer, and writer of everything else, to the tune of 500+ books) was born this day 90 years ago. It would be impossible to calculate his influence on my life, as I devoured whatever he wrote that I could find back when I was in high school. The Internetz have proclaimed this as Science-Fiction Day in his honor, and so be it. Thank you for everything, and thank you, UU and Pinhead, for the above image. (Can anyone guess where it came from?)

More shortly, need to wake up first.

The Eyes Have It

Wear glasses? Today is World Sight Day. Take care of your eyes. Take care of your glasses, too, or you'll end up like Daria.

Those of you in this fandom who are literate (all of you, in other words) will be happy to know that SF author Frank Herbert, he who gave us Dune and other brilliant tales, was born 89 years ago. Harvey Pekar, creator of the underground comic series American Splendor, turns 70.

Pinhead has yet another fine display of artistic ability at PPMB, this time a comic strip: "In the Fine Morning." I liked it.

PPMB
  • The Curse of El Smoocho, by Roentgen (Part 3): It was a bucolic morning in Lawndale. The sun was now shining in the spring, and the birds were singing. Jamie White was very happy as he walked towards the Morgendorffer residence. The motto of the Lawndale Lions was clear: "Protect Our Women." The only question regarding Quinn Morgendorffer was, "Whose woman was Quinn Morgendorffer?" After a fistfight and some making-up, Jamie White carried his bruises proudly to Quinn's door and rang the bell. Silence. He was sure that Quinn would be glad to see him.
  • Reaped Out 2: Sickle Sad World, by Pinkminx (Part 8): “Look George, I know what you’re going to say. I don’t care.” Daria said firmly and turned to go. “Just… just be careful okay? I don’t want you to get on Rube’s bad side.” (FF.net)
  • Romin' Holiday, by TAG (COMPLETE!): Daria cast an uneasy gaze over the barren half of the dorm room. All she knew of her roommate-to-be was her name: H. Wayne. Too bad it could not have been Jane Lane, her best friend. The thought of dealing with a difficult roommate cast a pall over the pleasure of the moment.
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part III), by jtranser (continued): "What in the Hell happened to you?!" "I had to take care of some important business. I wound up having to kill myself."
  • Tales of the Ringbearers: A New Ringbearer, by Aloysius (Part 3): The vampire stared at the girl and calmly set his beer mug down on the bar. Tony noted that none of the beer had been drunk, then looked at the undead man as he stood up. He was tall and thin, dressed in an elegantly tailored suit and held a folded up coat over his left arm.

All the Grizzly Details

Fifteen years ago today in another universe, a young girl named Daria Morgendorffer vanished on a nature hike at Camp Grizzly. This is her story. And yes yes yes yes yes, I am going to finish the series this year if at all possible.

Brother Grimace discovered an interesting essay about the "Macho Sue" character type, which provoked a lot of thought on my part (and probably for others by the time you read this). See the thread about this topic right here. Jane Lane has her own thoughts on the Macho Sue topic.

PPMB
  • The Cynic and the Defender, by Doggieboy (Part 12): Daria answered the door before Robert could knock, and the two embraced and kissed. “Is she here?” he asked when he broke the kiss. She nodded and smiled. “Yes. She’s very impatient. Said something about going to the mall to meet her friends.”
  • Lawndale's Finest: The Dark Knight, by NightGoblyn (Chapter 4, Part 8): “Well, you don’t see that everyday,” Tomcat said, lowering his binoculars. Robin put down her takeout box of curry and pulled herself up so she could see over the safety wall at the roof’s edge. The bright pink Cadillac pulling into the mostly empty parking lot next to Ace Chemical stood out like a sore thumb. “It looks like a pimp car,” she said. She reached up and tapped her goggles, zooming in on the car as the driver got out and started walking towards the building. “He’s the plant director’s son.” [Epilogue now up! Wow!]
  • Noon, by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): 11:59. Her hand trembles as she brings the glass to bruised lips. The crystal is clouded by a smear of carmine which contrasts against the golden liquid within. (FF.net)
  • Reaped Out (Dead Like Me crossover finally has a name! Yay, Pinkminx!), by Pinkminx (Part 9): "What do you mean you just left him there?" Rube folded the crossword section of the newspaper and set it down beside him. "Your job specifies that you take the soul and guide them into the afterlife" He leant forward and grasped his hands together, interlocking his fingers as he inhaled deeply, waiting for Daria's reply.
  • Tales of the Ringbearers: With New Responsiblity, by Richard Lobinske and Brother Grimace (Part 1): Dressed in his flight gear and carrying a helmet with "Archangel" painted across the visor cover, Capt. Gerald Wright angrily marched away from the campus helipad toward the Curtis E. LeMay College of Military Studies. "AlertCon One and I'm here to ferry the old Project Fast Forward director back to Uatu HQ," the tall, well muscled African-American growled. "I'm the one that warned them that the **** was going to hit the fan today and they're sending me off on taxi duty. I know Gen. Trainor has connections, but dammit."
  • Unnamed story (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by Dennis (COMPLETE!): Tom was surprised to receive an an email from his old girlfriend Jane Lane, and even more surprised to find that it contained business information. Apparently, the Baltimore area was home to a wealthy recluse who needed an financial adviser to keep his father's formerly successful meat packing business going. Jane's email had the man's name, Mason Verger, and the address of a large mansion in Owings Mills. Tom had wasted no time in heading over.
  • Unnamed story (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by Deref (COMPLETE!): It was pure coincidence that, as Kevin stepped off the landing gear tread, his static line, snapping back against the release, whipped across the cow's rump. The cow (whose presence in the plane was another of those unlikely coincidences that, while rare, are not altogether unknown), not thinking particularly clearly (not unusually, it must be said, for a cow), bolted for (and inevitably out of) the door, following closely behind Kevin as he plunged earthwards. Meanwhile, below, Jane was admonishing Tom and Daria...
  • Unnamed story (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by Derek (COMPLETE!): The wind roared in Sam Johnson's ears as he plummeted towards the ground. He loved skydiving. It was the ultimate feeling of freedom. The only thing better would be to have actual wings. With a mental sigh, he decided it was time to open his parachute. He reached up and yanked on the chute's ripcord. Nothing happened.
  • Unnamed story (1,001 Deaths of Tom Sloane - Part II), by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): Tom glanced around in confusion, trying to figure out how he'd ended up in the middle of a barren, stony desert. Just a couple of minutes ago, he'd been eating at the Good Time Chinese Restaurant with his girlfriend Daria and his ex-girlfriend Jane. He'd gotten up to use the bathroom, gotten lost somewhere in the back of the building on his way out, and apparently ended up somewhere in the Midwest.
  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fanfic Should Have: TGIF), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "Well, bailiff... call the next case," Charles Ruttheimer III said, leering unashamedly at Brittany Taylor as he sat behind the desk placed on a pair of risers in the classroom, proud as a bantam rooster as he stroked the fabric of the black judge's robe he wore. "Rowlllll..."

Spacebabes for Asimov

Renown science writer and science-fiction author Isaac Asimov was born this day 89 years ago in Russia. It would be impossible to list all the books he wrote in this space, as he did over 500 of them, and I could not name all the books he did that I have loved. He was The Man. The Space Babes appear here in his honor.

One character from Daria appears in a fanfic reading a book by Asimov, and one of Asimov's science articles influenced a story that I wrote. Anyone else have an Asimov/Daria tale?

Lost Treasures Found!

At left: Daria waving from the future. At right: a nifty logo. Both came from this link to a place only the longest-term fans here will remember: The original MTV website for Daria. And I mean original, back to 1997. The site changed a lot in a short time, but it had class. Check it out. It is loaded with goodies. NOW I know where everyone got those cool pictures I've been seeing around for years.

The only bummer part is that I got Daria down to her hips, but her legs and feet came in two other images that I can't fit together. I'll work on this. Damn.

One other bummer is that the WayBack Machine is kind of iffy at times. Have to keep working with it.

Happy Leap Year Day!

This was the most fitting pic I could find for Leap Year Day: Sk8er Daria.

Anyway, a new page has been added to DariaWiki: Science fiction! Please have a look at it and feel free to expand upon it at length. I have a few more things to add to it, but it's almost done as is. Westerns, horror, and some other major genres for classifying Daria fanfic are still to come. It is my secret hope that pages like this will encourage people to read older fanfics when they are displayed in original ways.

More soon. Okay, back again.

Here's an interesting mini-essay, on a blog called Conservatory Bound: "An Ode to Trent Lane." Interesting. Anyone else have this problem?

Another fan club, too, on Bebo.com: Daria Morgendorffer

More soon. More Bebo groups. Hmm, how to handle this. Does anyone reading this blog use social networking websites? I can post a truckload of them if so. Some of them are big, most are very small.

More soon.
