Daria's Screensaver, from "The Invitation"

Last chance to be impressed. Download this:

http://www.theangstguy.com/fanimation/daria.exe

It's Daria's screensaver.

With Tori Jericho dancing. And Sandi dancing.

And other kids dancing, as seen in "The Invitation."

And with music.

And with flashing lights.

If this doesn't get you going, nothing will.

Enjoy.

Quinn's Screensaver, from "Too Cute"

Okay, let's see if this trips anyone out. Here is the Quinn Morgendorffer "Too Cute" screensaver, with Dr. Shar and Quinn chattering in the background. Yes, this screensaver has SOUND!

The screensaver's official name is "Quinn's Makeover." Once again, I got this off the WayBack Machine and have checked it for viruses, trojans, etc. I just now ran it on my PC. Go for it!

Diving Right In

Today is the 88th birthday of mermaid-movie star Esther Williams. Jodie Landon is costumed as the water-maid at left.

On PPMB, Dulcinea asks a question about Daria that no one has asked before. Chip in with your thoughts, too.

An informal competition is also in the works on PPMB to take a large image found with the WayBack Machine and turn it into a unique Daria background for your computer. Join in the fun.

Historical Note: The current version of MTV's Daria website seems to date back to August 2001, with minor modifications. Just thought you'd like to know.

PPMB
  • Don't Sweat the Mall Stuff, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): Theresa jumped between Quinn and Sandi, belatedly realizing that this could be a fatal mistake. "Stop!" she cried, nerves shot. She was completely overworked, now that every other clerk in the vicinity had apparently gone on break at the same time. (FF.net)
  • Falling into College 69: Two Intents, by Richard Lobinske (COMPLETE!): "You've really gotten good at buttering me up, haven't you?" [No, this is not sex talk!]
  • Iron Chef: Daria Is Raven's Apprentice, by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): "Friend Daria is right! You do have a trick arrow for everything." [Continued here!]
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part II), by jtranser (continued): "Welcome to Sanryojinja. My shrine is *CUTE*. It's not completely finished yet, though. But I have many *CUTE THINGS*!!! If you do not appreciate *CUTE*, then My shrine will not appeal to you because I love *CUTE*. *CUTE* makes *HAPPY*, and everyone wants to be *HAPPY*!"
  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fanfic Should Have: Hump Day), by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): The warning lights blinked and he sighed. It was bad enough that he had to cross the tracks on his way home from AA every Tuesday and Thursday night, but every time he thought he might beat the evening freight the bar came down and he would waste eight minutes of his life watching box cars go by.

Mack was a Running Back, and More Late-Breaking Football News

And another marvelous thing I found with the WayBack Machine was a webpage that, skipping the details, listed some of the high school football teams that the Lawndale Lions have played in their area, with the names and positions of some of the best players. The webpage is supposed to show Kevin Thompson's fantasy football team, which he staffed with people he apparently knew from the games he had played. However, the players, teams, and schools were also known to the sadistic student who programmed the game for Kevin, because Kevin used to torment him for being a nerd.

Without further ado, here are the (as far as we know) best high-school football players in and around Lawndale High School, plus their positions and teams.

  • Theodore Wozniak (QB-Oakwood Taproots)
  • Trevor Dinsmoor (WR-Briarwood Beefalo)
  • Byron Spanky (WR-Eagleton Elephant Seals)
  • Michael Jordan Mackenzie (RB-Lawndale Lions) AH-HA!
  • Etan O'Malley (RB-Oakwood Taproots)
  • Afolabi Obalade (TE-Lawrenceville Locusts)
  • Kevin Thompson (QB-Lawndale Lions)
  • Howie Scrapple (WR-Eagleton Elephant Seals)
  • Brandon Balder (WR-Oakpine Native Americans)
  • Bruno Wambolt (WR-Mo Udall High Marmosets)
  • Al Alberdingk-Thijm (RB-Briarwood Beefalo)
  • Bob Jones (RB-Lakeland Bichon Frises)
  • Kyle Fant (RB-Oakwood Taproots)
  • Lincoln Hwang (PK-Mo Udall High Marmosets)
  • Simek Pletka (PK-Lawrenceville Locusts)
I sense a certain tongue-in-cheek quality to the list, but I see some people referenced here that we've heard of before: Mack (running back for the Lawndale Lions, plus captain I guess), and Teddy Wosniak, who is the QB for Oakwood. But wasn't Sam Stack the Oakwood QB? Maybe one replaced the other, who knows.

The demonic fantasy football game, which was computerized, also spit out this list of player injuries for Kevin, all written up by the sadistic programmer:
  • Brendan Mulrooney (Lawrenceville) dislocated his shoulder while participating in an exuberant "high five." He is currently resting at home on a bunch of fluffy pillows.
  • Theodore Wozniak (Oakwood) has recovered from a strained groin muscle which Brittany Taylor (Head Cheerleader of Lawndale) seemed to know an awful lot about. Hmmmm...
  • Manu Breeze (Briarwood) is done for the year due to an outburst of Roid Rage, which left the rest of the squad with minor cuts and bruises. He is also suffering from liver damage, premature baldness, and shrunken testicles. Coincidence, I guess.
  • Howie Scrapple (Eagleton) mistook the bleachers for a 7-man sled during practice. He was placed on injured reserve due to the fact that he now has a dent in his head.
  • Ryan Tetherhooks (Oakpine) was sidelined when run over by a field stripper last Thursday. He will be out indefinitely with this like gigantic body cast with so much room you can sign no matter how big you write. Hear that, Taproots? Ha ha!
  • Kevin Thompson (Lawndale) is currently nursing a sore facial cheek but is expected to play on Saturday. If I screw up again I'll have to get like a glass eye and join the Witness Rejection Program. [Kevin wrote the last line. He had told Brittany he was playing fantasy football, and she slapped him for fantasizing (about other girls, she assumed).]
Again, more tongue-in-cheek goodness from the game programmer, whose name is Todd K. Feichmann. We will return to Todd in a later posting. He's rather interesting.

And Brittany really is the head cheerleader for Lawndale, just as we'd thought!

Is This the Origin of Holiday Island?

Yes, I know, it's the cover of a Beavis and Butt-head comic. Part of it is serialized on a July 1997 MTV website in the B&B section. There are at least two pictures of a bland-faced Daria here. Just keep clicking and you'll read the whole Halloween section.

The entire issue is about B&B's trials and tribulations with the holidays. See the cover? Did this start the ball rolling on "Depth Takes a Holiday"?

Love seeing Daria as a sour Christmas present. Makes me smile.

Oh, and here is the link to the December 1996 B&B section of MTV Online. Some fun little things to download, if you like.

Hacker Birthday to You, Hacker Birthday to You....

Guess who became an adult today? This is the 18th birthday of the World Wide Web, which appeared this day to the public in 1991. (Purists quibble over what exactly constitutes the Birth of the WWW, but we'll go with this one for now.) Daria's close personal friends, Beavis and Butt-head, are on hand to... do whatever they do. Guess whose birthday is also celebrated today? Kevin Mitnick turns 46. Remember him? If the name is not familiar, don't worry about it. It's a hacker thing, you wouldn't understand.

This is also the birthday anniversary of pop-art icon Andy Warhol and of investigator of paranormal mysteries Charles Fort, but they were covered pretty thoroughly last year. With pictures, too. Oh, and here's Daria the Biker again for Anonymous. That's the biggest I can find online.

PPMB
  • Iron Chef: Daria Is Raven's Apprentice, by Project Pegasus (COMPLETE!): "Hmmm... I think that a Benjamin says that you ain't seen nothing." "Robin, Benjamin Button is not on the hundred-dollar bill!" "Of course he is! And here, look: he gets older as the denominations get smaller." [And there's more!]
  • Reaped Out, by Pinkminx (Epilogue to Act 1): I hope you know what you're doing, Morgendorffer. (FF.net)
  • Reaped Out, by Pinkminx (Act 2, Part 1): I don't like it when I say people should die and then they do. I don't want that kind of responsibility. But what if the responsibility was thrust upon you? (FF.net)
  • Regifted, by Ajar (Part 11): “Hello, is Daria there?” said Ryan. “Wow,” said Quinn. “A guy calling for Daria. That's a first. I guess you brains don't have the same style standards.”
  • Reunions and Introductions, by Tscroggs (continued): "Most of the stuff I had was either connected to bad memories I didn’t want to keep; or wasn’t worth transporting when I moved. I had one hell of a fire sale before I left. Everything else I donated or gave away. I’ve got pictures of most of it if you want to see them.” Jane’s eyes darted over towards the child, who was now seated on the coach with a picture book. “Some of its not kid safe though.”
  • Stacy Rowe, Seeker (Part II), by jtranser (continued): "One thing bothers me, though. What'll we do about all those Brussels sprouts?"
  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fanfic Should Have: Hump Day), by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): Daria stood in the communal dressing room while other women darted around her pulling on costumes or applying makeup. She glanced around nervously, certain that her deep unease was obvious to anyone who cared to give her a second glance. She wasn't sure which made her more uncomfortable: her purpose for being here or the combination of the arctic blast from the AC and her semi-nude state.

Had to show you this....

Remember that Jane Lane screensaver I wrote about? It shows Jane running night and day, with the sky behind her changing as she runs on and on. There are meteors and stars and the sun and moon and clouds and blue-eyed Jane.

Awesome. You gotta try this.

LATE NOTE: If you want to try to download some of these screensavers for yourself (and some of them might work, but you will have to try them on your own), then go to this archived Downloadables page from March 2000 (MTV Daria site). Right click with your mouse when the cursor is over one of the download links, then click "Save Link As..." and put whatever downloads into one of your folders. If a download wasn't saved, the thing saved will come up as a duplicate of the webpage, meaning there was nothing there to grab. Quinn's links are invisibly there even if the text box isn't, so run the mouse over that space and located the links that way. Both PC and Mac links exist, with or without music. I can't say what was saved and what wasn't. Good luck. (I think Daria's screensaver, without music, was saved.)

Kevin's Invisible Buddy

In a long-ago online article by Kevin "I'm the QB!" Thompson, he noted among other things that he used to have an invisible playmate. "My fantasy football team is kind of like the imaginary friend I had when I was little (his name was Sporty and he was always sticking lima beans up my nose) except there are more of them and they don't hate my Dad. I miss Sporty. I wonder where he is now?"

Little Kevin had an invisible friend.

This just screams for fanfic, doncha think? I mean, what if Sporty was real? What if he came back?

And he was like a miniature mascot for a football team Kevin liked?

And he had a giant invisible death robot with which he destroyed Lawndale? Wouldn't that be GREAT? Okay, maybe not the robot. Not right away, that is. Maybe Sporty could walk out of the back of the Good Times Chinese restaurant. Everything else sure does.

We'll round up the latest fanfics later. Ciao.

X Stands for "The Lawndale File"

We need more Artie fics, I was just thinking. Let's see, ten years ago exactly, "The Lawndale File" was released from its cage on MTV. I wrote a bit about this last year. Not sure how many more Daria fanfics or fanfic concepts were spawned from this episode. Anyone have any favorites? (I liked this one.) There was a naughty story based on Artie and the aliens, I recall, but we won't go there. If someone could fix up the appropriate page in DariaWiki, we would all be very grateful.

Going to the Midwest US Dariacon? Check here!

What else is going on... the President of the United States turns 48 today. Many more happies to you.

Ninety-seven years ago today, a man was born in Sweden who had a mostly obscure and unremarkable life until he saw people around him being persecuted, hounded, forced into railroad cars to be taken away to death camps. He then did a very remarkable thing: he began saving people. No one can say how many Hungarian Jews Raoul Wallenberg rescued from certain death, though it is in the tens of thousands at least. Thank you for everything.

Oh! And who could forget Saint Sithney, whose feast day this is? Someone really needs to write a story about this Saints' Day Holiday from Holiday Island High School. He is really and truly the patron saint of mad dogs. That's what I said. Perhaps he is still trying to heal Jake Morgendorffer's emotional trauma from this mad dog.

Moar 2 kumm. Stae toond. Oh! Right, someone asked for a link to that alter ego of Daria as a motorcyclist. Here it is. It was part of a screensaver posted on The N's website once. I used it as "D-Day" Morgendorffer, but it is exactly the same pic. Enjoy.

Guess What I Dragged Out of the WayBack Machine?

You want a Jane Lane screensaver? It's yours, at the link below. I've already loaded it on my PC-type computer and tested it. It works. No viruses. No trojans. No bugs. Just pure Jane excellence.

See Jane run! Go, Jane, go!

The EXE program was somehow saved intact by the WayBack Machine from an MTV Daria site c. 2000. I can't believe it. This is too incredible to keep to myself. I also got the Quinn screensaver (haven't tried it yet), but the Daria one was not recoverable. Alas. But, hey, here's JANEY!!!

MTV's Daria website on March 1, 2000: Go see it!

A very interesting thing just came to light. I found a frames version of one of the old Daria websites (archived March 1, 2000), and the frames version allows you to click through most of the site without having most of the pages disappear or fail to load. Try it. It's wonderful, just like really having the old site back again. There are a few glitches, but only a few. Go to...

...and click on "New Daria." The pages load quickly, too. Wow. Click on the website links as you normally would. Tons of stuff to read, play with, and save.

Kara Wild the Great informs us that the number of signatures on the DVDaria petition went over 30,000. And we won!

Pinkminx offers two eye-popping pix on PPMB. Outstanding!

PPMB
  • Don't Sweat the Mall Stuff, by Kristen Bealer (Part 5): Quinn's shoulders tensed. She looked away from the mirror and said, "Oh, I don't know. If you knew Blake like I do, you'd realize that he isn't the type to be impressed by something as simple as color." "But, Quinn," Sandi replied with a smirk, "if you truly understood Blake, you'd also know that it's exactly those little details that make a difference to him."
  • Falling into College 69: Two Intents, by Richard Lobinske (Part 4): After he heard the car drive away, Charles sat and listened to the silent house. He was alone and unsupervised for the first time since his arrest. It felt good. [But it didn't last! ]
  • Gimme Skelter, by TAG and Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): Armalin’s grin faded and he looked more serious. “I was saying that I’ve always considered myself a rational man—not an atheist, no, but a believer in logic and reason. The universe operates on the basis of law. There are mysteries, of course, and so much we don’t understand about the world and space, but I always thought that every ‘how’ or ‘why’ we asked had a reasonable answer.” He drank down the run and set the glass on his desk with a thump. “Now, I don’t know."
  • Iron Chef: Daria is Raven's Apprentice, by Project Pegasus (COMPLETE!): "Stacy! Are you questioning the judgment of a higher-ranking Fashion Club officer? Does Sandi Griffin need to choke a bitch?"
  • Jacob Morgendorffer, Esq., by Cap (Parts 1 and 2): Helen’s long brown hair was swirling around her head as the old pick-up truck rattled its way down the two-lane country road. The beaded leather band across her forehead doing little to keep wildly fluttering tresses from her eyes but the cooling breeze felt too good to consider winding up the window. “I’ve been thinking,” she said turning her face to her husband, Jake. (FF.net)
  • Legion of Lawndale Heroes GT, by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): Sandi and Daria were left face to face with Villacana, Stephens, Strine and Stoudemire. The latter four had combined themselves into a single being of unknown capability. Since Strine had proven himself to possess psionic abilities and since Stephens could clearly teleport, whatever Sandi and Daria faced would be difficult to overcome.
  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fanfic Should Have: Hump Day) by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "Hey, fellas. Just want you to know, we welcome same-sex partners. What you do with the ring is your business."
  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fanfic Should Have: Hump Day), by thatLONERchick (COMPLETE!): "You slice a lot of tomatoes?" Trent asked in a flirtatious tone. Daria smiled slightly and glanced at him out of the corner of her eye.

Right Wear It Hertz

Eleven years ago this evening, "Write Where It Hurts" appeared on MTV for the first time. This is actually good advice for writers: write about what you know, and what everyone knows is what has hurt them. It gives the writing emotional honesty, or something like that.

Once again we have some blasts from the past, courtesy of the Wayback Machine. Not all of these webpages are complete, but there is enough there to use as "canon fodder" for future stories.

Oh, and Happy Civic Holiday to you Canadianers. Party hard!

A "lost" Daria essay! Not seen in years! (NEW!)

An artsy-type project for the can-do fan

This artsy-type project came about because I found a huge Daria wallpaper online, through the Wayback Machine. A small version of the 1200 x 1200 image is above. The link to the BIG version is here. Your mission is to modify the above image into something unique and new for the enjoyment of the fandom.

Ready, set, go.

The Lady and the Tiger

"Dye! Dye! My Darling" aired for the first time on MTV a mere nine years ago. Jane has this weird idea to dye her hair and be both a lady and a tiger, presumably to put more spice into her relationship with Tom, but whoa, do things ever get off course from there. A lot of AUs use this episode as their jump-off point. None of them use the tiger, though. Why? What if the tiger had jumped out of its cage and... no, we've abused Tom enough.

The tiger aside, is there anything new that can be said about DDMD, other than this? You tell me.

PPMB
  • Falling Into College 69: Two Intents, by Richard Lobinske (Part 3): "This is Blythe Lincoln with Channel 12 News and I'm on campus at Raft University. With me is Raft senior, Ms Daria Morgendorffer, copy editor for the campus newspaper, The Mast and a bit of a local celebrity known for her tenacity and dedication to her friends. Now, we know that a little over five years ago she was the subject of an usual feature article in Val Magazine."
  • Gimme Skelter, by TAG and Brother Grimace (Part 19b): Mackenzie found it difficult to believe his quest was over. Then he remembered that it wasn’t.
  • Iron Chef: Daria is Raven's Apprentice, by NightGoblyn (COMPLETE!): "Oh! I see friend Daria is helping friend Arrowette II activate her superpowers."
  • Regifted, by Ajar (Part 10): “It's just caffeine,” Marina lied. “It's no different than having a few cups of coffee, except it's at lot quicker and easier on the stomach.”
  • Reunions and Introductions, by Tscroggs (Part 2): “We’re willing to overlook a certain incident as long as she continues to follow the rules. I saw you coming in Daria; Samantha is already on the way down.”
  • Shadows of a Timeless Song, by Dennis (Part 4): The summons woke her from a dreamless sleep. In the grey light of predawn, she showered, dressed, and fed herself. She couldn't have said why she did this, only that it felt... necessary. It wasn't that she was being forced—she remembered everything and there was no mind or will overriding her own—but still she felt the need.

More gems from eons past, unearthed by the Wayback Machine

Before I do anything else, I apologize if some of the images are familiar to you because I posted them before. As far as I know, I haven't, but my memory is kaput, so... Okay, that's out of the way, let's take a look. At left is the video clip button that once took you to see Daria dyeing Jane's hair in DDMD. At right is... I'm not sure, looks like the button going to Space Daria's page. Nice hair.

Now we have a nice Daria logo that doesn't move (left), one with good color. Some of the old-time images look way off-tone, like Quinn with very pale blue-green skin, or Daria with hair so dark it's almost black. I used to think these images, found on other people's websites, were just badly rendered by the webmasters. I was wrong. Sorry.

The Space Fashion Club is "Coming Nov." but I am sure someone can change the wording quite easily. Have fun with it. The image of Daria at lower left (below this entry) was once able to move its eyes. I have all the eye GIFs, but can't put them together with the image. Oh, well.

At right again is Space Kevin, coming in October or something. That should wind this batch up nicely.

Hope you are enjoying this as much as I am. I love playing Internet archaeologist!

P.S. This blog went over 100,000 hits some times ago. Thank you all!

Joma, and other things retrieved from the bottomless depths of Archive.org

Once again I've been playing with the Wayback Machine at Archive.org, looking up the bits and pieces (and sometimes whole webpages) of MTV Daria websites long past. Tonight I've been fooling with items from the year 2000, and the picture at left is one of many images labeled "joma." Joma is short for Jodie-Mack, sort of like Bennifer or Brangela. (Remember them?) Now you know a new word, courtesy of the Daria show. Are you pro-Joma (in favor of Jodie/Mack 'shippers) or anti-Joma?

The Wayback Machine digs up the wildest things, let me tell you. At upper right we have Space Jane, "Coming June." (Probably her own webpage was supposed to be ready in June 2000.) We also have a photo of a voice actor, not sure which one, doing his part of the show's dialogue.

And at left is a group of buttons leading from Jane's webpage to pictures, sound clips, etc. Doesn't work now.

Moar l8r as I keep digging. I am NEVER going to run out of images for this blog, let me tell you. And you can use them, too. They're MTV's, not mine. Enjoy.

MTV Turns the Big 2-8!

Yes, MTV (which gave us Daria) is 28.

You may talk amongst yourselves.
