Shhh! She's At the Good Part!

Everyone be quiet so you don't disturb Young Daria on Young Readers Day! Seriously, don't mess with readers of any age. We hold a grudge.

Today is also Dunce Day, so for those people out there who aren't smart enough to leave a reader alone, have a pointed cap. I have no doubt that Brittany and Kevin are (completely unknowingly) celebrating this one somewhere.

Fanfic Update!
  • Are We Crazy Yet?, by Lexarius (COMPLETE!): "'I give up, Jane.' Daria Morgendorffer threw her hands up in the air in frustration. She closed her laptop and made a ball of paper, throwing it into the bin next to her friend and confident."

  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 32): "Quinn climbed the stairs in silence, she explored a little and soon it turned out that the Garden House was just as cold, dusty and lonely upstairs as it had been down there at ground level, with empty hallways, sad and empty walls and quite empty rooms as well."

  • Daria on the Trail, by meesterlee (part 20): "I awoke the next morning feeling unsettled. This was the day we’d be crossing Rocky Ridge."

  • The Front Fell Off (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have), by Two-Eyed Charlie (COMPLETE!): "DARIA: Secretary Landon, thanks for coming in. JODIE: It's a great pleasure, thank you."

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 46): "It was yet another great and fun night at Heaven for Anna."

What's THAT Supposed to Mean?

I don't know why Michele Landon looks so upset; it's National Michele Day and they even spelled her name right! Maybe she's angry because she doesn't like that people just assume she wants her own holiday? You got me on this one.

This is also Zero Tasking Day, so try not to accomplish anything. Channel your inner Trent or follow Mr. DeMartino's advice: "Conserve your energy. Do as little as possible. Pretend you're in class!"

Common Sense and Candy Don't Mix Well!

I see Daria and Tom are way ahead of the rest of us on National Candy Day, or they will be until Quinn finds out who took her chocolate. Save some for me, guys!

Today is also Use Your Common Sense Day, but I don't think very many Lawndale residents will be celebrating that one. Still, there's a first time for everything!

Fanfic Update!
  • DariaBrittany (Iron Chef: Brittany & Daria Swap), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "Before Kevin could try again, Mr. O'Neil started the lesson. As soon as the lesson finished DariaBrittany rushed out of the classroom..."

  • Daria on the Trail, by meesterlee (parts 18 and 19): "Daria: Our next few days were a continuing slog as we continued along the Sweetwater River towards the turnoff for the Lander Road. By now most of our company had been sold on the idea of taking the Lander Road instead of one of the older cut-offs: a returning gold-seeker’s description of the awful descent down Big Hill had filtered from a neighboring company to our company and nobody wanted anything to do with it." (Part 19)

  • "Expectavi"—Daria: Agent of Cobra, by Ranchoth (part 5.5): "The thing wrenched, struggling at it's bonds. To no luck—they held. So did it's limbs, to Daria's utter relief."

  • Gall in the Family, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Quinn and Jim are arguing. In this particular marital spat the topic is that Quinn wants to have another kid while Jim doesn't." (Part 3)

  • Tom Lin, by JoeMerl (COMPLETE!): "Everyone knew about the forest of Carterhaugh—that it was haunted by a mysterious fairy named Tom Lin. If any maidens should venture into the woods alone, she would have to leave him some sort of token, such as a ring or a cloak."

"If I weren't stressed, I'd get stressed by everyone telling me I'm stressed!"

I guess it goes without saying that Jake already knows it's National Stress Awareness Day. Take deep breaths, Jakey. Think nice thoughts. Fluffy kittens, soothing ocean waves, your father being six feet underground....

Speaking of the dead, today is both the Day of the Dead and Plan Your Epitaph Day, and if that's not an ominous sign I don't know what is. Keep calm there, Jake. Remember your heart condition!

It's Spoooooooky!

Looks like Daria and Jane are going to spend Halloween in a cemetery, which seems like an odd choice. I mean, sure you don't have to worry about annoying living people bothering you, but you also won't get much candy, either. I much prefer the trick-or-treating route.

This is also National Magic Day, so Upchuck will probably get out his sparkly suit and show off his prestidigitation act. Or maybe he'll take pity on us and not.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria on the Trail, by meesterlee (parts 16 and 17): "We remained at Independence Rock another day. Despite Captain Trout’s precautions and his requiring that our wagons should be in good running order, the Willards’ wagon had a broken wheel rim that needed repair." (Part 17)

  • Gall in the Family, by wilddogjj (part 1): "Event planner: 'So, Mr. and Mrs. Carbone, will this do?' Quinn and Jim both smiled and nodded."

  • Song From An American Movie, by Lady Evil (parts 2 and 3): "At Lawndale High, in Mr. O'Neill's class, Mr. O'Neill was giving a new assignment. 'So, as an exercise in living literature, you'll all be making your own movies. We have Daria to thank for that exciting suggestion.'" (Part 3)

Monsters Like Privacy, Too

Jane's gotten into the spirit for National Frankenstein Day, and this does seem like exactly the kind of weird funky art project she'd be into. Uh...this is an art project, right, Jane? Right?

Today is also National Hermit Day, so in the wise words of Quinn Morgendorffer go ahead and "hide in your room like a kermit!" Of course, not all of us need an excuse to hole up somewhere and avoid the general public.

Who Wants a Story About Beer?

I think Jesse is regretting his chosen method of celebrating American Beer Day. Of if he doesn't regret it yet, the hangover will definitely take care of it for him.

This is also National Tell a Story Day, and I sure hope Daria will favor us with one of her fairy tale retellings. She could go with the one where the witch eats Hansel and Gretel, but I much prefer the one where Cinderella becomes the first woman president. Ah, sweet fantasy.

Fanfic Update!
  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 30): "That was all that Daria needed to see so far in this nightmare."

  • Doctor Who: Repeating Mistakes, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "Janelle emerged from the TARDIS. She hoped that the rigours of the upcoming adventure would help her to forget the troubles she was running from."

  • Song From An American Movie, by Lady Evil (part 1): "It was another day of therapy for Daria."

  • When the Student Is Ready, The Teacher Will Come (Iron Chef: Daria and the Gang and Halloween), by Meester_Lee (COMPLETE!): "It started with an idea for a Melody Powers novel. Melody would be seconded by the US Justice Department to look into Mawdryn, an international master criminal posing as a wizard and help the Feds bring him to justice."

  • The Youngest Barksdale (Iron Chef: Daria The Youngest Barksdale), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 3): "It wasn’t long before someone came over. 'Hi, Daria, is it?'"

It's Not Over 'Til the Fashionista Sings

Looks like Quinn is celebrating World Opera Day, but from what little we've heard of her singing voice I don't think the audience will be very appreciative. Watch out for turkey legs, Quinn!

Today is also National Greasy Foods Day, so perhaps Quinn will favor us with a delightful aria about greasy fries!

Finally, this is both International Artist Day and National Fine Art Appreciation Day, so Jane can enjoy a double-whammy of art holidays today! Not that she needs an excuse to celebrate art, of course.

Now THAT'S Mental in the Morning

Daria and Jane look way too chipper about TV Talk Show Host Day, especially because I never expected to describe either of them as "chipper" at all. I really hope that their show is actually the anti-morning show, with snark and dark humor and all of the things we love about that duo.

This is also Slap Your Annoying Coworker Day, but Ms. Barch has taken it much further than that on multiple occasions. Mr. O'Neill had better watch out if Mr. DeMartino hears about this holiday!

Fanfic Update!
  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 29): "It had been a very cold, eerily silent and peaceful night at the Morgendorffer house so far."

  • Daria on the Trail, by meesterlee (part 15): "Earl returned from his conversation with Captain Trout looking a bit rattled. 'You look shook up,' I said. 'Are you all right?'"

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 45): "All of Lawndale was cold and silent like a graveyard, it was not even an hour into the first curfew so far and Anna, now back home and standing at the living hall alone, knew that she could not have taken more than twenty minutes or so in her casual adventure out there."

  • On The Other Side Of The Mirror, by radiofox (parts 1 - 11): "'Do you think this mirror looks nice?' Quinn asked." (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5) (Part 6) (Part 7) (Part 8) (Part 9) (Part 10) (Part 11)

Ribbit!

Either Kevin pissed off the wrong witch or he's celebrating American Frog Day in the most hardcore way possible. I have to say, a frog with a goofy grin sitting on a football is a pretty damn American frog. All it needs is some apple pie.

Today is also the anniversary of the (unsuccessful) attempt to psychically levitate the Pentagon, an attempt that Jake and his hippie friends either were present for or tried to emulate. Either way, all he got for his trouble was a broken foot. It was a good try, Jake!

A Red Letter Day in Daria History!

Looks like Daria and Jane are just about to observe National New Friends Day, which is an especially remarkable event for Daria. It might be the first and only time in her life that she'll celebrate this particular holiday. That may sound sad, but honestly it's probably what she'd prefer.

This is also Evaluate Your Life Day, the day that Jake says you should "walk away. You change your name, move to another state, get some ID. It's not too late to start over, Daria, it's not too late! You're still a young man! You don't have to live with your mistakes! Get out while you can!" I'm sure that's a normal reaction, right?

Fanfic Update!
  • Burned Out, by Wrabbit7 (part 27): "As they drove along the nearly abandoned highway leading out of Lawndale, Jennifer patted her legs in time and sang along with the song on the radio."

  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 28): "Far from the stars and the ethereal realms, so far from the monsters and green fire there was a happy place called Lawndale, where the forest was safe and the wolves did not speak, just a sweet and peaceful town that most people there loved to call home."

  • Illness of the Cynic Chick, by cfardellbrenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "Brittany approached Daria’s hospital room. (She wasn’t sure what to make of the orderly’s references to ‘Mrs. Sullivan’.)"

  • Reasons To Call Her, by radiofox (COMPLETE!): "Eric walked to the nearest phone booth, payed and dialed Helen's phone number. He tried calling his brothers but they didn't answer. He was stuck calling his employee to pick him up after a car crash."

I see that the Fashion Club and their friends have decided to celebrate Wear Something Gaudy Day, unless too-long bottoms and boxy tops are in these days. I am the opposite of plugged in when it comes to fashion trends, so your guess is as good as mine!

Today is also National Pasta Day, so dive right into some penne a la pesto a la Jake before it oxidizes! Or you could play it safe with some frozen lasagna if you (very sensibly) don't trust Jake's cooking.

This is also National Motorcycle Ride Day, but please don't try to pop a wheelie unless you're a professional. I don't care how many times you saw it on CHiPs, Kevin!

Fanfic Update!
  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 26 and 27): "Even the nature of gravity itself, daylight and the very flow of time as well were all strange and somewhat different in that place." (Part 27)

  • Daria on the Trail, by meesterlee (parts 13 and 14): "'Earl? What the Hell are you doing here?' I said. He tilted his head sheepishly. My God is he actually blushing?" (Part 14)

Don't Fear Parties!

Daria and Jane need to stand firm, because it's National Face Your Fears Day and they can't just run away from what scares them. Unless what scares them is Quinn offering a makeover, in which case run! Run now!

Today is also It’s My Party Day, so invite over some friends and throw a big party! In my case, the "friends" are "books" and "big party" is "time spent reading." Enjoy!

Fanfic Update!
  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 25): "The world had vanished into a distant and ghostly realm all around her, everything was almost colorless and gray, it was just as cold as the darkest nights of winter and Quinn Morgendorffer could hardly believe what was actually happening to her."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Legend of Sporting Joe, by Meester_Lee (part 7): "The rest of Daria’s day at her mother’s office was less eventful. Her Mom did invite her into her office and join her while she worked."

  • The Engineer and the Time Lady, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 16): "'Nina to Baffin, I'm returning to the TARDIS.' 'Acknowledged,' Aialah said."

  • Harry Potter Morgendorffer, by Meester_Lee (parts 35 and 36): "Bobby sat staring at the telephone and the card he had in his hand. Should he or shouldn’t he? This really bothered him and it wasn’t something he could talk over with Mom or with a girl." (Part 36)

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 44): "It was true that the house of the Morgendorffer family was not quite comparable to the largest residences in Lawndale, and yet it was indeed one of the newest, most original and also most beautiful houses in that part of the town."

  • Illness of the Cynic Chick, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "After Jane and her brother (as she had realised) had left looking for Daria, Brittany also left. It had been an exhausting night, but when she looked in her bedroom mirror before changing she found that she quite liked what she saw there."

  • Surprise Parentage (Iron Chef: Jane's real father), by radiofox (part 1): "'I brought the photo album for our project.' Kevin called as his voice raidated through the Casa Lane kitchen."

Today is also Kids Music Day, so everyone sing with me: "I am cool and that is it, and everyone else is full of, full of, full of...."

Fanfic Update!
  • Another Pie, by ywhiterain (COMPLETE!): "'All I'm saying,' Tom said, 'is I'm just not sure what king of self respecting dictator would take over Lawndale of all the places in the entire world.'"

  • Cafés are Most Romantic on Wednesdays, by radiofox (COMPLETE!): "Tiffany looked in her mirror, eyes with a slight shimmer and slight smile as she applied her favourite lip gloss. After dating Terry for 8 months she had finally decided to stick up for herself."

  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 24): "It was a sad and gloomy afternoon after all the classes had ended that late October day at Lawndale High, the gardens and trees everywhere in campus were now lashed by snowy wind coming from the mountains and the weather would soon be quite below the freezing point."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Legend of Sporting Joe, by Meester_Lee (part 6): "Daria’s eyes widened as she watched Mrs. Flores’ coffee stirring itself."

  • Illness of the Cynic Chick, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "It may be said that a massive change of events may start by something which would otherwise be insignificant changing. For instance; Brittany Taylor upon being invited to the Zon, Zone or Zen Nightclub by a boy named Terry, or Jerry, deciding to ask her stepmother for help dying her hair instead of doing it herself."

  • Resident of the United States (Daria and the Gang Thread II), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "Bluntly put, when Daria Morgendorffer ran for president - if you could call it that - no one paid much attention."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have), by wacokid (COMPLETE!): "'What's wrong?' Daria asked. 'I'm not sure,' Jane replied as the two sat waiting for class to start. 'Something's off today. But I just can't put my finger on it.'"

  • Why Daria No Longer Listens to Marilyn Manson (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have), by SPEEDCOREIDOLATER (COMPLETE!): "'I’m not gonna go through this again.' Today is also Mean Girls Day, and I have no doubt that the Fashion Club has this one covered. As usual.

Fanfic Update!
  • All American Rejects, by Lady Evil (part 6): "Upchuck didn’t find the 1985 California Raisins posable erasers from Burger World he was looking for. However, he did find a booth selling non-posable PVC figurines, including the ones Hardee’s gave away in 1988 and a four foot Michael Jackson raisin going for the ripe price of ten dollars."

  • Bravo Zulu - A Lawndale High Story, by benson (part 4): "As Jane and Kevin wandered about the campus, putting together their ideas, the first school buses started to arrive."

  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 21 - 23): "The fallen leaves were flying in a cold October wind, it was a quite silent and peaceful morning at Lawndale, countless ravens were flying between the parks and trees and Ella Anne looked up to admire how the vast open sky was just starting to get all cloudy and gray." (Part 22) (Part 23)

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 43): "Lawndale and all of Pennsylvania, just like virtually everywhere else in the United States of America, soon descended into angst, almost anarchy and severe chaos after the presidential address had been interrupted by these unknown terrorists known as Vail of Angst."

I'm not sure if that's coffee Daria's drinking (especially because at one point during that scene her mug is a glass instead), but let's pretend it is because today is National Coffee Day! Don't tell Quinn, though. She'd be devastated.

Still, Daria should take it easy because today is also World Heart Day, and too much caffeine can't be good for her. Especially since she has a family history of heart attacks.

Fanfic Update!
  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 20): "'Hello mom!' Ella Anne called out happily, even standing up fast so that she could pull a chair for the sleepy Helen to sit down- 'As you can see, breakfast is ready! Nothing special, but I hope you like this special recipe of mine... I trust you slept well?'"

  • Doctor Who - Changes in Time and Space, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 5.2): "The TARDIS materialised outside the town. 'The Old West,' the Doctor said. 'That’s good. Haven’t been there for a while,' Felicia said."

  • Navel Gazing for Fun and Profit, by entrancedcat (COMPLETE!): "Upchuck - Feisty...lady! Daria - No, I won't show you my belly button."

  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 18): "The dreamy white stars looked so bright and distant in the frozen sky above, a few fallen leaves would fly with the wind between the trees, nothing could be heard except for a few cats in the distance and everything was quite cold and silent at Lawndale that night."

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 41 and 42): "The great and orange Coulthard House certainly had all of its doors and windows well locked that day, it would take some time for Ethel and Lachlan to arrive there with the keys and yet that was not an inconvenience for Anna Felicia at all." (Part 42)

  • Like a Steel Beam Through the Heart, by WildDogJJ (parts 1 and 2): "Quinn, Jim and the triplets were at the kitchen table having breakfast. The boys had their backpacks with them as they were walking to school after eating." (Part 2)

  • Is It Adulthood Already?, by britabird (part 5): "Over the next couple of months, Jane grew more cynical with each date she went on. Either the man was too dumb, or too creepy, or too much of an asshole for her to waste anymore of her time."

  • Quinn and Stacy - Esteem?, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (COMPLETE!): "Quinn looked at Stacy in concern as they left the school grounds. She had been silent since Mr. O’Neill said they would be up at Assembly."

  • Neo-Lawndale (Scenes no Daria fanfic Should Have: How did We survive?), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "Daria looked out of the window of the high-rise building she was in, the sight of Neo-Lawndale in all its futuristic techno, cyberpunk glory still could take her breath away."

  • Quinn and Stacy - Esteem?, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "'Esteem, a Teen. The sounds don’t quite mesh. So. it is with teens and esteem. The two don’t seem to go together. But we are here to begin realizing your actuality...'"

  • Spare the Rod, Spoil the Quinn, by wilddogjj (part 2): "While all of the kids were upstairs Quinn and Jim were in the living room, where Quinn is freaking out over her very public meltdown that day."

  • Sporting Kevin, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "There wasn’t much difference between the previous day’s parent meeting and this one, aside from some incredulous questions about Sporty."

Do Superhumans Drink Beer?

Looks like Jane has decided to go the spandex route for Superhuman Day, but in reality the holiday celebrates those with disabilities who have overcome challenges. Still, the outfit looks good on her!

Today is also National Beer Lovers Day, which Ms. Barch's ex-husband will probably celebrate. If we're (un)lucky, maybe Kevin will sing that song! You know the one I mean.

Beware of Cheese Burn!

Ted's not enjoying National Cheese Pizza Day, but that may be because he just figured out what kind of process they use. I guess the Fashion Club will be sitting this one out, waiting for "National Cheese-less Pizza Day."

Speaking of the Fashion Club, today is also International Day of Charity, so this would be an excellent opportunity to collect some go-go boots and belly chains for the needy. Or you could do something useful, I guess.

Fanfic Update!
  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 12): "Quite in a similar fashion to other High Schools in that part of the country, Lawndale High was a varied collection of reddish buildings surrounded by gardens, a parking lot of decent size and a nice football field for the school's team to practice and play important matches in."

  • How to Train Your Jock, by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Daria was sitting on the couch while her cat, Godzilla, purred on her lap. Daria herself was talking on the phone."

  • Reborn: The Origin Story Of Burnout Girl, by radiofox (part 5): "'Hello Garfield, I need you to come to my house as soon as possible; it's an emergency!'"

  • Spare The Rod, Spoil the Quinn, by wilddogjj (part 1): "Quinn and Stacy were having lunch at Pizza King. While the place is a teen hangout the thirty-something best friends still like to eat here for sentimental reasons."

  • Sporting Kevin, by Kristen Bealer (part 2): "That night, Kevin lay in his racecar bed and stared at the ceiling, trying not to listen to his parents argue."

The Carpet Doesn't Match the Drapes

I see Mr. O'Neill is trying to jump on the bandwagon for World Beard Day, but it's not a very convincing effort. I think he should just let Trent have this one, even if a goatee barely counts as a beard. At least his is real!

Today is also National Doodle Day, and you can be sure Jane will join in. Maybe she can doodle Mr. O'Neill with a better-looking beard!

Does Upchuck Sell Mary Kay?

I'm not sure if Upchuck's car is a Cadillac, but it's pink and that's good enough for Pink Cadillac Day! On a side note, is anyone else both disturbed and intrigued by the fact that Lawndale has a swinger's club? Is anyone else wondering which Daria parents might be members? Just me? Cool.

Today is also American Chess Day, which Kevin will be celebrating by demanding that everyone "King me, king me, king me!"

Fanfic Update!
  • All American Rejects, by Lady Evil (parts 3 and 4): "'MISTY! NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!' Debbie shrieked when she saw the busty blonde laying in a tub full of her own blood." (Part 4)

  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 5 - 11): "It took the shaken Daria, Helen and Jake some time to recover from the shock of everything that they had witnessed regarding Quinn so far, but they could not stay frozen at the garden forever, so eventually they ventured into the house still grasped by deep surprise, angst and even a decent dose of fear." (Part 6) (Part 7) (Part 8) (Part 9) (Part 10) (Part 11)

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 38 and 39): "Anna knew exactly what the specialist was just about to discover, and yet she found herself totally unable to explain any of that to her, since she did not want to even think about what happened and the flashbacks could come and haunt her again at any moment." (Part 39)

  • How to Train Your Jock, by WildDogJJ (parts 1 and 2): "At age 39, almost 40, Jamie White was the history teacher at Lawndale High. Like DeMartino before him, Jamie was also a combat veteran." (Part 2)

  • Mega Mall Mega Problems, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 5): "Quinn and the others reached the food court after looking at a few stores. Quinn laid out the diagram."

  • Quinn and Stacy - Esteem?, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "The blue Lexus was approaching the High School. 'Quinn, I just want to know your mother and I realise it's not easy moving to a whole new town,' Jake Morgendorffer said."

  • The Snake, the Crossover and the Dog, by Blake C Stacey (BlakeStacey) (COMPLETE!): "'It's hard to imagine how Daria, of all people, could have gotten into trouble,' said Ramses Emerson as he stepped from the carriage into the remnants of a London fog."

  • Sporting Kevin, by Kristen Bealer (part 1): "Kevin leaned his cheek against his hand and tried to focus on paying attention in class. Mr. Shepard, his fifth grade teacher, was in the middle of a science lesson. Science was Kevin’s least favorite subject, but then all the other subjects were his least favorite as well."

  • Star Trek: Voyager: A Complication of Kes's, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "A temporal anomaly occurred aboard the starship. A version of Kes from over 5 years in the future appeared in Engineering."

Hey, I'm Back! Remember Me?

Daria and Jane are clearly about to have a wild Frankenstein Day, but I really hope that brain didn't come out of Kevin's head. Not because I'm worried about his well-being, but because I think they'd have better luck using a wadded-up towel.

Today is also National Beach Day, as summer is coming to a close and you're almost out of time to feel the sand between your toes. Daria requests that someone please turn down the sun.

Quick, Sandi, Tell a Skydiving Joke!

While I appreciate Sandi's attempt on National Airborne Day, the holiday is meant to celebrate the United States Airborne Forces. Not the people who just happen to be in mid-air...approaching the ground quickly.

Today is also National Tell a Joke Day, and this is the day. I can feel it. Jake is finally going to master the art. And even if he doesn't, could everyone just laugh anyway? We need to encourage him even when he fails.

Finally, I will be on vacation for the next couple weeks and won't be posting until the end of the month. Try not to let the cobwebs pile up too much around here while I'm gone, okay?

Fanfic Update!
  • Crystal Claw, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 1 - 4): "Everything seemed distant, eerie and somewhat out of place at Lawndale that night." (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4)

Maybe She Should Get a Tattoo of a Bookshop!

I think Daria's going to want to celebrate National Tattoo Removal Day, because now that she and Tom have broken up that tattoo is going to be deeply awkward. Although it will definitely piss off her grandmother, so maybe it's worth keeping for that alone?

Today is also Love Your Bookshop Day, so once Daria's done getting that tattoo removed she should stop by Books by the Ton for some new reading material. Maybe something about caring for newly-removed tattoos?

"Zappa digital...Zappa analog"

Trent invites everyone to celebrate National Vinyl Record Day, and reminds you all that "it's a richer tone." Unless you're listening to a fish sticks commercial.

Today is also National Middle Child Day, which would apply to not only Trent but also Rachel Landon, Sam Griffin, and either Helen or Rita depending on your opinion on their birth order.

Fanfic Update!
  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 37): "The day started to get quite gray and cloudy as Ethel's dazzling green Stratus traveled all casual through the peaceful city of Harrisburg, it was just a normal day for everyone and the cover up at Wildwood was so good that nobody had noticed anything unusual."

A Good Day for Lazy Lions!

Daria is clearly not enjoying World Lion Day, but lucky for Daria, real lions don't force people to dance with them. They just maul them to death.

Today is also Lazy Day, and I was going to make a joke about Trent here, but...meh. I don't feel like it.

Definitely Don't Braid Any Cats!

Stacy, Quinn, and Tiffany are taking things a little too far for National Braiders Day, but I dare anyone to laugh at their hairstyles. Remember, those paintball thingies hurt!

Today is also International Cat Day, so say hello to Mr. Whiskers or any other feline friends you might meet. From a distance, though. Mr. Whiskers is not exactly friendly with strangers, and in fact very few cats are.

Fanfic Update!
  • All American Rejects, by Lady Evil (part 2): "Alfred read the back of a video cassette in the Lanes’ movie collection. 'The face of evil! The Soul of terror! The body of a babe! The bone chilling story of a motorcycle riding, eye gouging, brain eating zombie sex kitten who just happens to be insane!'"

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 36): "The peaceful parking lot at the entrance of Wildwood Park in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania looked just as normal as it would be any other August morning, and yet something very, very far from normal activity was taking place right there that calm and windless day."

  • Shameless Self Insert Into Daria, by James the Lesser (part 9): "Adrian and the others chat about the nose job some girl got. 'I don't even remember what she looked like before.'"

  • Sour Keys, by booboothefoolish (COMPLETE!): "'Oh God damn it.' was the first thing Daria said when she looked at the little white stick with it's two red lines."

"When dead clowns can't clown...."

I see Andrea got the memo about National Clown Day, but I'm still unsure about why she felt she had to join in. I guess if she already had a unicycle, doing otherwise would have been a wasted opportunity?

Today is also International Hangover Day, so if Andrea's unusual choice has anything to do with that flask she carries around, I expect she'll be regretting it soon.

Is There an Alien Coast Guard?

While I applaud Daria's enthusiasm for U.S. Coast Guard Day, I have to point out that in spite of their maritime mission the Coast Guard uniforms don't look anything like that. Then again, Daria doesn't technically look anything like that, either, so anything goes!

Today is also the anniversary of "The Lawndale File," which aired on this day in 1999. While no one turned out to be an alien (as far as we know), we did end on a shot of Daria and Jane that makes the swimsuit image look prudish.

Fanfic Update!
  • Family Ties, by Spikesnifty09 (COMPLETE!): "'That's a picture of your cousin Bravery graduating from Prince Academy.' King Charming told his children."

  • Kevin's Obsession, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Kevin, Jim, Chuck and Jamie were seated on the front porch enjoying the late summer day while drinking beer." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Quinn's Code 16: The Geek's Expose, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 5): "Daria was seeing red. Kristen's mother had let everyone else in!"

  • Sisterly Forgiveness, by UnbiasedStorytellerno1 (COMPLETE!): "'Hey Daria!' 'Hey Jane..' Jane ran down the street to where Daria was slowly treading to school."

  • Stranger Without Time, by Spikesnifty09 (part 5): "Anna was walking to her science class when she spotted a girl but, this girl made Anna's heart pour."

The Kiss Heard 'Round the Fandom

Today's moment of horror is brought to us by the anniversary of the episode "Dye! Dye! My Darling," which aired on this day in 2000. I sometimes wonder if the edgy artistic side of Jane might have actually dug this look, once she got over the shock of it. Then again, if she had then none of the Triangle drama would have happened and...wait, what was my point here?

Today is also National Coloring Book Day, but don't tell Jane. If her distaste for paint-by-number kits is anything to go by, her reaction to her hair would be nothing in comparison.
