Like, Glub!

Sandi almost has the right idea for World Snorkeling Day, except that she's clearly scuba diving rather than snorkeling. Oh, and you aren't supposed to hold hair dryers or any other electrical devices while doing either activity.

While we wait for Sandi to get the shock of her life, Daria and Jane can celebrate International Day of Friendship. In fact, their relationship is close enough that they may even decide to go for Share a Hug Day! Hm...maybe they aren't quite that close.

Fanfic Update!
  • Convergence on Lawndale, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 9): "As Stacy returned to her seat, she tried to ignore Sandi’s glare. 'What was that about, Stacy?' the latter asked. 'Um, nothing,' Stacy said."

  • Friend of a Friend, by Doggodoaattack (part 8): "'Daria, get up. Janes here.' Glancing at her alarm clock, she saw it read 9:30. Her mother must be losing her mind, Jane was never awake that early on a weekend."

  • Grant Writer's Block, by welltemperedclavier (parts 11 and 12): "No one at Daria's company objected when she'd given her two weeks' notice and finished her time working remotely from the Morgendorffer home, now darker and quieter and dustier than it had ever been." (Part 12)

  • It was only a kiss..., by DIsaac (parts 1 and 2): "My mind just started racing with every single thought I could imagine or even think of after finishing what I just did with Daria." (Part 2)

  • taken by someone who makes me better, by wwzelda (COMPLETE!): "Twenty years after leaving Lawndale for college and never looking back, Jodie finds herself back for Lawndale High's reunion."

  • Titanic - A True Story, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 3 - 5): "Larry had heard all kinds of stories about Edward John Smith, the greatest and most respected Captain in the entire White Star Line, everyone in Southampton knew about him, the man was famous... and yet, standing in the living presence of the legendary Captain Smith was a totally new experience!" (Part 4) (Part 5)

  • you were right in front of me, by wwzelda (COMPLETE!): "When Daria nearly gets into a bad car accident, she doesn’t think to call her parents, her sister, or even her boyfriend."

There's More Than One Way to Bring Glory to Laaaaaawndale High!

Ms. Li is having a terrific National Soccer Day, but I don't think the students are going to appreciate it. I guess it's still better than chopping open a soda machine with a fire ax, though.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Speedtrapped," which aired on this day in 1999. Daria got her driver's licence, Mystik Spiral got arrested, Quinn got a cute new outfit, and Travis...well, Travis just barely got away with his life.

Auntie Pathy

I see Rita and Amy are arguing again, but they should try to make peace because it's Auntie's Day and they need to set a good example for their nieces. Unfortunately, that thought will probably set them off on an argument over which of them is the worse example, so I think I'll just stay out of this one.

While we're talking about massive blow-ups, today is also the anniversary of the episode "Fire!," which aired on this day in 2000. Wait, did you think I was talking about Jake's unintentional arson? I mean Daria, Tom, and Jane's escalating conflict. And the worst was yet to come....

Fanfic Update!
  • Alone, by Doggodoaattack (part 14): "'Tell me what happened at the Zen.'"

  • Daria: Cynic the Superheroine, by Meester_Lee (part 3): "At the end of the school day, Daria returned to her house. She devoted the early part of the evening to business: first checking messages on her phone service, then calling the Navajo Nation’s tribal police to report that her car had been stolen."

  • Friend of a Friend, by Doggodoaattack (part 7): "'So, you can’t talk tomorrow?' Daria had been on the phone with Charlie for almost an hour after school, discussing anything and everything."

  • Grant Writer's Block, by welltemperedclavier (part 10): "Many people would be terrified at the thought of having to write sixteen pages of original content over the brief course of a single weekend. To Daria? It was a chance to show off."

  • Quinn's Keg Party, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (COMPLETE!): "To Quinn Morgendorffer, that slow and cloudy day started just like any other Friday morning..."

  • She Ain't Easy, She's My Sister, by Dennis (COMPLETE!): "'I get it, Mom,' said Daria Morgendorffer, as she folded laundry, the cordless phone tucked between her shoulder and her cheek. She rolled her eyes at the wall of her bedroom as she put another T-shirt on the neat pile on the bed."

  • Titanic - A True Story, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (parts 1 and 2): "It was a happy day, and there it was! The mighty RMS Titanic of the White Star Line, looking as majestic as any ship could ever dream to be, just waiting as hundreds of passengers slowly made their way into the unbelievable vessel." (Part 2)

Helen, You Might Want To At Least Get a Covered Wagon!

Helen's all set for Pioneer Day, or at least she would be if the pioneers set off with a single wheel and a chicken. Perhaps she should talk to the Dewitt-Clinton family and get advice? On second thought, better not. Talking to them is never a good idea.

I hope Quinn wishes Daria a happy Cousins Day, and while she's at it she could give Erin a call. Poor girl probably needs some cheering up, considering who she's married to.

Finally, it was on this day in 2013 that CollegeHumor released a fake Daria movie trailer that made all of fandom wish it was a real movie. Really, the whole thing was spot-on! You can watch it here.

Or As Jane Calls Him, "Young Thomas"

If Tom chooses to celebrate National Thomas Day by stuffing his face with junk food, then who am I to stop him? I just hope he made sure that the gummi bears weren't already reserved for an art project. As for Tommy Sherman, well, he can get his own holiday. Preferably one about massive head injuries.

Travis, meanwhile, will be pleased to know that it's also National Day of the Cowboy. Of course, wearing a cowboy hat and playing a guitar does not a cowboy make, so I'll reserve judgment until I see him ride. And by "ride" I mean dive out of the way of crazed homicidal teenage drivers.

Speaking of Daria, today is World Brain Day and I hope she celebrates by...I don't know, thinking or something. At the very least I hope she's able to keep a safe distance between herself and any non-brains, for everyone's sake.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria: Cynic the Superheroine, by Meester_Lee (part 2): "She got home in a couple of hours and let herself in after thanking Joe for the ride and giving him some bills to help with gas money."

  • Daria's Lifeline, by Faith64 (COMPLETE!): "Daria held the phone in her hand, hovering one finger over the keypad. She knew the number well enough, having called it in more than one moment of emotional crisis."

  • Friend of a Friend, by Doggodoaattack (part 6): "The next day after school, Daria found herself pacing back and forth in her room. Her ‘not a date’ with Charlie had been the only thing on her mind all day."

  • Grant Writer's Block, by welltemperedclavier (parts 7 - 9): "Daria had always been the stoic Morgendorffer. Even more so than mom, she’d stay calm in the wildest situation." (Part 8) (Part 9)

On the Good Ship....

Jane looks just precious for National Lollipop Day, but her expression says she'd rather find the person who dressed her like that and put the lollipop someplace unpleasant. Have a sweet treat today if you want one, but I'll stick with chocolate myself.

If Quinn ever decided to join the Chess Club (as Daria predicted in "Quinn the Brain") then I hope she and her friends have a great World Chess Day. If she didn't, then there's always Kevin "King me!" Thompson!

Also on the subject of school extracurriculars, I hope Jane changes into her running clothes in honor of the anniversary of "See Jane Run," which aired on this day in 1998. If Jane still has that lollipop handy, I think either Evan or Ms. Morris would qualify as candidates for its final resting place.

Some Families Dive Further Down Than Others

Jodie's showing excellent form for Women's Dive Day, but I'm sure her parents will find fault with it somehow. Maybe they'll complain that she should have been studying on the way down?

In any case, the Landons will not be celebrating Perfect Family Day, but then again none of the other families in Lawndale really qualify, either. The Grififns are a nightmare, Helen can't get along with her sisters for even a minute, and the Taylors...well, let's not even get into that one. It could be that the Lanes have the right idea: stay on different continents and everyone gets along much better.

Fanfic Update!
  • Alone, by Doggodoaattack (part 13): "Daria took a deep breath and began to recount the events that led to her nightmare."

  • Daria: Cynic the Superheroine, by meesterlee (part 1): "'So you’re really going back?' said Clarise Sparrow. Clarise had been one of Earth Intelligence’s interrogators put in charge of debriefing her after she arrived on this world after her unintentional translation from Earth Bet."

  • The Engineer and the Time Lady, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 20): "Nina thought more about the rescue. There was certainly more to it than that."

  • Friend of a Friend, by Doggodoaattack (part 4): "Sitting in the back of class, Daria found herself unable to focus, her new discovery swarming her mind."

  • Grant Writer's Block, by welltemperedclavier (parts 5 and 6): "'I didn’t know Sandi was still in Lawndale,' Quinn said. It was almost midnight, and a steady rain pattered on the roof. Daria lay on her bed with her phone to her ear." (Part 6)

  • There and Back Again, by Shanejayell (COMPLETE!): "Quinn Morgendorffer sighed softly as she rode the elevator up, her light brown hair flowing gracefully over her shoulders. She was not looking forward to this."

Medusa, Esq.

Helen's fully into celebrating World Snake Day, and I am very intentionally avoiding the obvious lawyer/snake joke that I could have made. I'll just say that I'd rather take my chances with Joanna, sensitive scales or not.

Let's just hope she puts that bow down before she finds out that today is National Wedding Invitation Day, because if she gets another invitation to a wedding for Erin (or, God forbid, Rita herself), then that reception will be full of stone sculptures before they even cut the cake.

Born to be Mild

Mack's looking quite bad-ass for National Motorcycle Day, and I hope he learns from Kevin and doesn't try to pop a wheelie. I don't care what that Paunch guy did on CHiPs.

I am, however, happy to see that he's (mostly) clothed, because it's National Nude Day and I really don't think anyone should ride a motorcycle naked. At the very least you want a helmet!

Finally, today we celebrate the anniversaries of both "The Teachings of Don Jake" and "Lane Miserables," which aired on this day in 1997 and 1999. Both involved Lane family reunions that went south quickly, but only one of them provided us with Trent's sage insights into Huckleberry Hound.

Fanfic Update!
  • Alone, by Doggodoaattack (part 12): "They didn’t talk much on the way to Jane’s house. Daria was still shaken by her recent panic attack and the sudden reintroduction of her only friend in the world back into her life. Jane was still angry and worried about her friend."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Legend of Sporting Joe, by Meester_Lee (part 19): "On Wednesday evening Julia came from day camp, showered, and changed into something dressier than she’d been wearing since she arrived in Highland."

  • "Expectavi"—Daria: Agent of Cobra, by Ranchoth (part 5): "In a second, she was there again. Another classroom. Another damned uncomfortable chair. Babel in front of her, soaking in bedlam. There was a voice, coming from behind."

  • Friend of a Friend, by Doggodoaattack (parts 2 and 3): "They made their way to the venue, where the band was already playing, some punk rock group that Toms sister was obsessed with." (Part 3)

  • Grant Writer's Block, by welltemperedclavier (parts 3 and 4): "Daria didn’t exactly hustle in her search for a volunteer position." (Part 4)

It's So...Jiggly!

Brittany could not be happier that today is National Eat Your Jello Day, but Daria and Jane seem distinctly unimpressed. It can't be that they're food snobs, given the greasy pizza and cheese fries they regularly consume, so I'm going to assume they're disgusted by the sight of primary colors during daylight hours. Not. Done.

On the subject of color, you could celebrate Different Colored Eyes Day even if your eyes are the same color. Just follow Quinn's advice and look into colored contact lenses! She recommends green for that touch of exotica that many young women crave.

"Legends of the Mall" aired on this day in 2000, which means the episode is old enough to qualify for its own past-era urban legend story! What kind of story would you set in the early 2000s? Probably something about a creepy Tamagotchi wearing Heelys and getting "crunk."

Warm Kittens are Great...But Not THAT Warm!

Helen's fans (especially Eric) are pleased to see how hot she looks today, but she's still not as hot as Death Valley was on this day 110 years ago, when it hit the world record high temperature of 134 degrees Fahrenheit. Although the way things are going, I wouldn't be surprised if that world record gets broken before long.

On a lighter (and cuter) note, today is National Kitten Day and I hope you have a cuddly feline friend to snuggle. If not, go see if Mr. Whiskers is in a friendly mood! (Spoiler alert: he isn't.)

Fanfic Update!
  • Alone, by Doggodoaattack (part 11): "Daria was startled by a loud knock on her door. She quickly hid the razor under her pillow and pulled down her sleeves, covering the fresh cuts on her arms."

  • Grant Writer’s Block, by welltemperedclavier (parts 1 and 2): "On her thirty-eighth birthday, Daria celebrated by doing the same kinds of things she did every day." (Part 2)

  • Lawndale's Forbidden Library, by chaoslordsquidward (COMPLETE!): "Daria awakened from her slumber. While she had an urge to drink blood, like all vampires have, she had an even greater urge to visit the Lawndale library to return her overdue books."

Thank You, Jake, For Wearing Boxers!

I'm pretty sure Jake is just celebrating Body Painting Day and didn't drop four figures at Axl's Parlor for tattoos. Not only would Helen murder him, but he's way too high-strung to be able to handle that many needle jabs...especially in sensitive places.

Daria, on the other hand, would probably much rather focus on Video Game Day, especially if there's a new Cannibal Fragfest out and she's got writing to procrastinate on. I think she'll pass on the Virtual Reality games, though, as they make her ill and bring back unpleasant memories of being ditched by a lovable kook.

Maybe Don't Kiss Your Webmaster, Though

Daria is immediately regretting her decision to celebrate International Kissing Day with Tom. Of course, she's going to regret it even more when Jane finds out!

If you decide to obeserve Take Your Webmaster to Lunch Day, be sure to invite Noah Barkman. Now that the dotcom bubble has long since popped, I'm not sure the guy is getting a lot of hot meals anymore. Do yourself a favor and skip the kombucha, though.

Last but not least, the episode "Ill" aired on this day in 1998. We may never know the root cause of Daria's rash, but we've sure had a lot of fun playing with it in fanfic, haven't we?

Fanfic Update!
  • Agony of De Fly, by radiofox (COMPLETE!): "A beautiful Saturday morning in the Lawndale. The sun shining, birds chipping, the sound of cars driving and flies buzzing. Wait, flies buzzing?"

  • Alone, by Doggodoaattack (part 8): "The Zen was more crowded than Daria had ever seen it, probably because Mystik Spiral wasn’t playing."

  • The F Files, by jones2000 (part 9): "From his hospital bed Chuck watched as Milo Luciano walked down the steps of the courthouse in his fancy Italian suit, shoot the camera a smug little grin and flipped on his sunglasses like he was some B list movie star that had just got off a DUI on a stupid technicality."

  • Song From An American Movie, by ladyevil (part 13): "The movie started with a montage of homeless people either on the streets or in the shelter. Care was taken to obscure their faces."

Curiouser and Curiouser!

Stacy is all set to play a game of croquet in honor of Alice in Wonderland Day! I would warn her against angering the Queen of Hearts, but if she can handle Sandi then this should be no problem.

Does anyone know if Travis is still around? If so, he can celebrate National Country Music Day! If not, I don't blame him. I wouldn't want to stick around while Daria's behind the wheel of a car, either.

And happy Independence Day to my fellow American Daria fans! We sure showed the King of England what's what, didn't we? Now we can drink tea without paying taxes and spell words with z's if we want to! USA! USA! USA!

Do Aliens Disco?

I don't think we need to ask Daria if she's celebrating World UFO Day; the question is whether or not the UFO that left the crop circle was from Mars or Zippotron. Some mysteries will simply never be explained.

On the other hand, the mystery of whether or not Rita's celebrating National Disco Day is an easy one. Do you suppose she still has the disco ball from her (first) wedding reception? I mean, disco was king. King of what, though?

Fanfic Update!
  • Alone, by Doggodoaattack (part 7): "Daria woke up the next day feeling groggy and miserable. She had nightmares all night, reliving the fear of the past few weeks and fearing the horrors of her future."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Legend of Sporting Joe, by Meester_Lee (part 18): "On Monday Julia got up, put on shorts and a tee, then sat down to wait for her mother. Her mother was dressed casually, or at least what was considered casual by the tabloids."

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 67): "Anna looked in silence at the dazzling violet moon that glowed so high up in the sky, the severe wind just kept carrying snow from the high mountains everywhere and she was starting to get really cold that night."

  • La Dolce Daria, by wilddogjj (part 1): "Daria and Jane were at a pizza joint in Manhattan's East Village doing what they'd done as teenagers in Lawndale; talk about their lives over pizza."

  • The Youngest Barksdale, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 8): "Upon arriving at school, Quinn met her friends. She hadn’t yet told them about her mother’s suspicions about Ms. Li."

Frankly, My Dear, I'm Unfollowing You on Twitter!

Jake and Helen are cuddling up as the cutest dysfuntional literary couple you've ever seen for the anniversary of Gone with the Wind, which was published on this day in 1936. The story was referenced in "I Don't" with Jane's "Oh, Scarlett, you grow lovelier by the day!" quip as well as in "Aunt Nauseam" as part of an unlikely excuse for sisterly bonding between Daria and Quinn.

On a more modern note, today is also Social Media Day, so I'll take the opportunity to bump the Facebook episodes Iron Chef I posted all the way back in 2010. Still plenty of episodes left undone if anyone's interested!

Finally, it was on this day in 1997 that the episode "The Big House" first aired. Jake and Helen laid down the law, and Daria promptly destroyed them with harmonica music and Scrabble skills.

She Could Have Gone For the Not-Uvula, Too!

Check out Daria's new accessory for International Body Piercing Day! It was that or pierced brains, and I'd hate to see the rash for that one.

Also on this day in 1998, MTV aired the Top 10 Animated Videos Countdown, hosted by Daria and Jane. The animation was limited, but the jokes were 100% pure Daria and Jane classic snark.

Finally, the episode "Psycho Therapy" first aired on this day in 2000. So many great scenes, from Jane's suggested answers for the survey questions to Quinn's past-life regression, but my favorite will always be the family role-playing exercise.

Fanfic Update!
  • Alone, by Doggodoaattack (part 6): "The rest of Daria’s day was a nightmare. Rumors had spread that she was dating Ethan, and he had been bothering her all day."

  • Circle of Strife, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "Angie was having another ghostly visitation. This one was her recently deceased ex-boyfriend Bryce. This encounter was proving to be a disappointment." (Part 9)

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Legend of Sporting Joe, by Meester_Lee (part 17): "Nymphadora Tonks, Hogwarts graduate and prospective Auror trainee with the Ministry’s DMLE, shifted her foot as she waited for the port-key that would take her across the Atlantic."

I Hope Jake Made an Extra-Special Hobbit Candle For the Occasion!

Happy anniversary to Helen and Jake, who made their commitment vows on this day in 1975! I assume that's when they got married, but "Committed" by Mike Xeno has another, more interesting take on the day.

Let's all celebrate their anniversary (maybe) with some chocolate pudding for National Chocolate Pudding Day, and join Daria and Brittany in their shared disgust for when the pudding has skin. Yuck.

Finally, here's a shout-out to Zachary for National Zachary Day! Do I mean Zachary the guy who was briefly seen being mistreated by Quinn in "Monster" or do I mean Zachary the never-seen cat belonging to the Lane family? You decide!

It seems that because today is International Fairy Day, Jodie has added wish granting to her already crammed-full list of extracurricular activities. Maybe she can grant her own wish for a little rest and relaxation. If you want to read a hilarious set of stories with another Daria character as a fairy, check out the Scarlett the Fairy series by Aloysius. There are also "Jane Unchained" and "Uranium in the Drinking Water," both by The Angst Guy, which put Jane and Daria in the role of fairies.

Celebrate With Some Chackers and Creese!

Helen clearly isn't in favor of National Kissing Day, but in her defense she's probably thinking about the last time Daria and Tom kissed. The fallout was absolutely brutal, and I don't think anyone wants to live through that again.

Who Wants to Hike With a Shark?

The Morgendorffers are not enjoying National Hike with a Geek Day as much as they thought they would, possibly because they're trying to figure out which one of them is the geek. I hope Mr. DeMartino is celebrating today, because hiking with geeks would be a huge improvement over hiking with his regular caliber of students.

Maybe any hikers can pay a visit to Jordana on the anniversary of the movie Jaws, which was released on this day in 1975. Sure, it's only a tooth, but it comes with a great story that is currently still under copyright.

Fanfic Update!
  • Circle of Strife, by wilddogjj (part 7): "Jim, Kevin, Tony, Chris and Chuck have just entered the kitchen and made a horrifying discovery: GJ, Tony's newborn son as well as Jim and Chris's baby brother, was missing."

  • Daria on the Trail, by meesterlee (part 53): "Captain Trout ordered a pause when we reached the banks of the Green River. No way were we going to casually cross it: the Green River had a sinister reputation stretching all the way back to Missouri."

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 66): "It was quite a happy and peaceful day as Anna and Larry walked back home together."

Go Fish!

Jake's not having a great International Sushi Day, but given his experience at Tokyo Toby's I would have thought he be relieved. All things considered, he'd be better off being sushi than eating it.

In fact, let's not forget that his last experience with sushi came with the double shock of Daria and Tom's night together in "My Night at Daria's," which aired on this day in 2001. Of course, it turned out to be nothing serious...unlike the parasite. Ew.

If you intend to have sushi, maybe you'd better catch your own, especially because today is Go Fishing Day! At least then you'll know where your fish came from, which is more than anyone can say about Tokyo Toby's.

I suspect Daria and Jane are already regretting their decision to celebrate Take a Road Trip Day, and if they aren't then potholes and bees and peanut butter sandwiches will fix that soon enough. They should just be glad Quinn isn't there with them to whine about dirty sheep.

Also on the subject of Quinn, the episode "Too Cute" first aired on this day in 1997. Sometimes I wonder whatever happened to that fake boob Dr. Shar gave to Daria. Did she return it? Did Upchuck steal it to keep as a treasured memento for all eternity? Inquiring minds want to know!

Quinn is looking even more artificial than usual for Doll Day, but I think Daria will be amused. After all, if she keeps her in the original packaging then Quinn will be worth more as a collector's item and be harder to hear when she whines.

Best Friends For Life...or Death

Awww, look how cute Daria and Jane are for National Best Friends Day! Just a couple of carefree kids enjoying each other's company and standing together against the rest of the world. Remember, though: this was in the pre-Tom days.

For the post-Tom days, Name Your Poison Day might be more appropriate. Either in the sense of choosing the lesser of two evils (which Daria did not) or in the literal sense of selecting a good concoction with which to kill your enemies (which Jane did not...yet).

  • J Johnson, by PenaltyPingo (part 1): "You're Jane Johnson. Your mom is, uh, different but she's just unique!"

If you're out of cheese, you could always stop by Payday for a free sample of cheese logs...or at least I assume they're real cheese. Who knows? Either way, be sure to use your cart responsiblity because it's Shopping Cart Day! That means no ramming rival customers with it to keep them from getting your cheese log.

Finally, if you just don't want any cheese, why not bake some cookies with Helen and Rita on the anniversary of the episode "Aunt Nauseam," which aired on this day in 2001? Don't worry; the chocolate chips are already in the dough.

Much Love to Dentists, Ice Cream, and Poor Work Ethics!

Metal Mouth doesn't seem to be feeling National I Love My Dentist Day, and I can't really blame him. When you have to use power tools to create your own dentures, it doesn't really fill you with confidence for your dental health provider.

Today is also National Rocky Road Day, and I recommend you go with the ice cream instead of an actual rocky road. Just ask Daria, who learned about potholes the hard way while riding in The Tank.

Finally, it's both Friday and National Leave the Office Early Day, so maybe sneak out of work early if you think you can get away with it. Anyone who thinks Helen will be celebrating this one has clearly hit their head even harder than Daria did.

I've Never Seen a Parrot Smile, Though

Penny's spending some quality time with Chiquito for World Parrot Day, but I don't think anyone else should try it. As Penny will remind you, "he's very possessive."

Please don't tell Daria that it's National Smile Day. First of all, she only likes to smile if she has a reason, and second...I've seen her smile. And it is creepy.

Fanfic Update!
  • Circle of Strife, by wilddogjj (parts 1 - 4): "Quinn was in the home office having an unpleasant conversation over the phone." (Part 3) (Part 4)

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Legend of Sporting Joe, by meester_lee (part 16): "If Julia had had an eventful Sunday, by contrast Daria’s was relatively peaceful. Unlike Jake, Helen was relatively irreligious, so everyone slept in instead of going to church."

  • Sandi’s Struggle, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "Sandi Griffin was annoyed. She still had Laryngitis. And yet her mother was insistent on her going to school."

Ye Olde Compost Pyle

I don't think Willow and Helen have had a very productive Learn About Composting Day, but I give them bonus points for trying. That said, if Coyote and Jake don't wipe those smug looks off their faces then they're going to learn about getting their butts kicked by angry wives.

Fortunately, the women have just the right look for End of the Middle Ages Day, because from what I gather hygiene wasn't high on the list back then. If you'd like to know more, head to the Lawndale High School Medieval Fair and ask Daria and Jane. They'll tell you all you want to know about it...and plenty you didn't want to know, as well.

Take Care of Your Hair AND Your Skin!

Please spare a thought for poor Jozu today, because it's National Hairstylist Mental Health Awareness Day and dealing with Quinn is never a soothing experience. Jozu, feel free to take your frustrations out on Quinn, okay? Let's put that high pain tolerance for hair-care treatments to the test!

Once Quinn's intensive hair care regimen is complete, I hope she remembers to protect herself from UV rays before going outside. It's Sun Screen Day, and Brittany would hate to learn that Quinn didn't take her advice. Although it would be a shame if Quinn forgot to bring enough for the rest of the Fashion Club...again.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Clash of the Fashion Clubs, by chaoslordsquidward (COMPLETE!): "On a normal day of providing free fashion advice at the Lawndale Mall, the fashion club spot three people staring at Quinn. Those three people bear a remarkable similarity to Sandi, Stacy, and Tiffany. They are staring at Quinn."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Legend of Sporting Joe, by Meester_Lee (part 15): "To her horror, the blond-haired boy with the big head turned to her and said 'Hi, I’m Beavis.'"

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 65): "The majestic Vail Mountains were just as vast, snowy and beautiful as the very first time that Anna Coulthard had visited them."

  • Song From An American Movie, by ladyevil (part 11): "'And La Dama springs off the ropes and boom!' Vixx gave her color commentary."

  • Take Me Out at the Ball Game, by wilddogjj (COMPLETE!): "It's still the first inning. Now Lawndale is fielding while Oakwood is batting. It's not going well for Lawndale as both first and second base have Oakwood players on them."

A Great Day for Singing and Dancing

Helen's taking a break from work to celebrate National Sing Out Day, and I don't think the law firm partners will be very impressed. Not about the singing; I just can't believe that she's taking a break from work! What is she thinking?

Don't tell Daria that today is Tap Dance Day, because her statement that she hadn't taken ballet in "Road Worrier" combined with Helen's reminisces about Daria falling at a dance recital leads me to assume her painful memory came from tap. Or maybe she was a little breakdancer. I would love to see that!

A Great Day for Any Turtles Named Ethan!

The good news is that Ms. Barch has somehow turned herself into a turtle in order to better celebrate World Turtle Day. The even better news is that she has also stranded herself on a desert island and will no longer be bothered by (or bother) any of those despicable males. Win-win!

I hope the Yeagers know that today is also National Ethan Day, so they should celebrate their son by...I don't know, building him an all-natural hammock or something. Freaking hippies.

Fanfic Update!
  • Complicated Girls, by Adelina (part 1): "It was mid-January when Shiho moved to Lawndale. Sure, she already knew what it was like to live in America, but now she wasn't controlled by the Organization anymore. No more apparent fear of the Big Boss, and now it was time to make the most of the semester."

  • Take Me Out at the Ball Game, by wilddogjj (part 2): "Quinn and Nicole were chatting over lunch. The topic of conversation was the new community baseball team since Quinn's husband is the short stop and Nicole's husband is the coach. Quinn was talking about what happened during the team's first practice."

Think Healthy, Eat Healthy, and Chase Rats With Fluffy Tails!

Looks like the Fashion Club is going to give World Meditation Day a try, but I'm not sure there would be much point. I mean, their minds have already been cleared of all thoughts, so why bother?

You could also try for a healthier lifestyle by celebrating Eat More Fruits and Vegetables Day...or just take them to the Food in Film Festival and throw them at the screen.

When Quinn has finished meditating and eating carrot sticks, I hope she finally chooses between her three admirers because it's the twenty-second anniversary of "One J at a Time" and those boys have got to be tired of waiting for her to make up her mind. Unless they've gone off on another squirrel-related adventure and forgotten all about her.

The Fast and the Fashionable

Seems like Stacy has no problem celebrating NASCAR Day, and I hope she has the time of her life. Never mind what Sandi might say about it; if she complains then just run her over in your sweet racecar!

Today is also World Plant a Vegetable Garden Day, and I hope Helen asks Willow to help her with the gardening process. Not because I think the Morgendorffers are likely to eat any vegetables other than tomato sauce, but because I kind of want to see her fall on her ass again. That always cracks me up.

If vegetables aren't your thing, then you could celebrate Plant Something Day instead. It's like the holiday creators gave up and said "Look, I don't care. Just take something and shove it in the dirt, okay?" I suppose that means that Memorial Crutches are okay!

Fanfic Update!
  • Take Me Out at the Ball Game, by wilddogjj (part 1): "Jim's uncle, Vito Carbone, is driving while a scantily clad brunette in her 20's (not his wife) rides shotgun."

  • The Youngest Barksdale (Iron Chef: Daria The Youngest Barksdale), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 7): "It didn’t take long for Daria to find out what happened. As she and Scarlett left school that afternoon, they found Andrea waiting for them in the parking lot."

Should We Also Celebrate the Diploma Frames?

Daria and Jane sure look pleased about National Graduation Tassel Day, and that's gotta be one of the weirdest holidays I've ever seen (and I've posted some real doozies here). I mean, why the tassel, specifically, and not the whole hat? For that matter, what does the hat matter when the person graduating is the one who did all the work? Did a tassel manufacturing company bribe someone? Am I overthinking this? (Yes.)

If you're tired of hearing me go on at length about a nutty holiday, then you're definitely not going to like National Walnut Day. But never mind what I have to say; go out there and crunch a bunch of your nutty friend's lunch!

You Could Bring Flowers to Your Family!

Looks like Kevin and his imaginary girl are celebrating Bring Flowers To Someone Day, which I'm sure was not invented by floral companies to increase profits. Not at all. If anyone wants to bring me flowers, I am especially partial to the chocolate roses. Thanks in advance!

I hope the Morgendorffers know that today is International Day of Families, so they should spend some extra quality time together. Or at least Helen should try not to work too late and Quinn could try admitting to someone that Daria isn't really her cousin. I like to keep expectations low.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Legend of Sporting Joe, by Meester_Lee (part 14): "On Sunday morning, Julia informed her mother that she’d rather stay at the hotel than at the set. Her mother accepted, but three hours later, Julia was regretting her decision."

  • Spacetrapped, by chaoslordsquidward (COMPLETE!): "Over the past few days, Sandi has had several sessions with various intelligence officers. She knows that cooperation would give her the best chance at not spending years in prison."

"Stupid smoke pellets get stuck so damn easy...."

The Helen Express is chugging along right on time (or, knowing Helen, ahead of schedule) because it's National Train Day! Shout out to Derek, fandom's own train enthusiast, and I hope Jake has time to play with his model trains today.

If you have kids, take care of kids, or used to be a kid, then happy National Babysitters Day to you! Please spare a thought to those poor brave souls forced to take on the young Morgendorffer children, as I don't think they've ever recovered from the experience.

Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo....

Daria's having a rough time of it on Twilight Zone Day, but she should look on the bright side. Maybe she'll end up in a parallel universe where Brittany and Kevin are smart!

Nah. That's too bizarre, even for Rod Serling.

For a tamer holiday, I can recommend Hostess Cupcake Day. If you want to get some chocolate desserts, just ask Brittany! She's a great hostess...cupcake.

Fanfic Update!
  • Construct, by FictionAuthorofFiction (COMPLETE!): "Today had been particularly awful, Daria thought to herself. There must have been a rumor about her going around, because people would not stop watching her all day."

  • Her Last Words, by Sheila Wisz Ellayn (part 64): "Anna Coulthard had not been very friendly, welcoming at all or even cooperative when Lockie finally came back with a specialist that day, in fact she had turned quite hostile and yet the doctor provided a diagnosis after analyzing her patient for about thirty minutes."

  • Mystery Incorporated in Lawndale (World's Shortest Crossover XV: A New Era In Crossovers), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "Daria walked out with Velma to the Mystery Machine. 'This is likely to be tedious, Daria,' Velma said. 'No doubt.'"

  • Spacetrapped, by chaoslordsquidward (parts 1 and 2): "'What is your legal name?' The interrogator asked. The interrogator was a gray-skinned alien with black eyes and tendrils covering their mouth." (Part 2)

Where DO All the Lost Socks Go?

Let's all have a moment of silence for poor Lefty on Lost Sock Memorial Day, as Daria and Jane separated him from his mate, never to be reunited again. Alas, I'm sure Righty will never get over the grief.

Perhaps the Fashion Club will stay the night at Quinn's house tonight for National Sleepover Day, and if they're really lucky then Helen will wear her bumblebee pajamas! Unless Quinn has already burned them, of course.

Finally, I would wish Mr. DeMartino a happy National Teacher’s Day, but "happy" and "teacher" never go anywhere near each other when he's involved. Still, we could take up a collection to buy him a new pair of pants to celebrate!

Not Everyone is Cut Out for Farm Life

Daria and Tom look very somber for Rural Life Sunday, but I don't see either of them sticking with the farm life. Once Daria figures out that you can't grow pizza, she'll be out of there before you can say "Grant Wood." Earl and Barbara, on the other hand, will still be out in the middle of nowhere selling bland chips and cellophane sandwiches.

Since today is also Radio Day, perhaps we should invite Bing and the Spatula Man out for a special broadcast! Or maybe not. I think I'd rather take them out to the farm and leave them there.

You Can Even Draw Cartoons Without Pants!

Jane's gotten into the spirit of Cartoonist Day, but I don't think Claude and Romonica will be impressed. We should, however, give a shout out to the Daria animators who made our favorite show a reality!

Sorry, Helen, but today is also National No Pants Day, so Jake and Trent can dress however they want. Even if there's a hurricane coming. Look, I don't make the rules; I just blog about them!
