I Choooooose Yoooooouuuu!

Tiffany hopes everyone is having a great National Pokemon Day, and Tiffany as a Pokemon actually makes sense. They don't speak much, and their favorite word is their own name. I doubt Tiffany could even take on a Weedle in a fight, though.

Today is also National Strawberry Day, so perhaps the Lawndale residents will mark the occasion by visiting the Big Strawberry. It's not like there's anything more exciting going on in town.

Bang!

Something tells me Daria's not really that into Pistol Patent Day, but that may just be because the specific pistol is pink. I wouldn't want to touch that with my bare hands, either.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Partner's Complaint," which aired on this day in 2000. No pistols were involved, and considering how many people lost their tempers it's probably a good thing.

Fanfic Update!
  • A Criminalé Summer, by LadySparrow (COMPLETE!): "Jane called Daria soon after getting off the phone with Tom, and gave her the update on the fire’s investigation."

  • Daria: Spin the Bottle, by Meester_Lee (parts 4 and 5): "Daria lay flat on her back and staring at the ceiling. Hellfire and damnation, she thought. I thought I left all that crap behind when I left Highland, and here it is coming back to smack me in the face." (Part 4)

  • Doctor Who - Changes in Time and Space, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 3): "'Unscheduled off world activation!' Sgt. Harriman called out as the gate activated. 'Closing the Iris.' The Iris closed."

  • Lawndale Homecoming, by LadySparrow (parts 1 - 3): "Daria looked outside her apartment window in New York on a Tuesday afternoon, as she pulled the last cigarette out of its pack and lit it up." (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Lawndale Splendor, by Two-Eyed Charlie (COMPLETE!): "NOTE FOR HIERONYMUS BOSCH: All right Jane, here we go. First new script in a while but...well, you'll see why."

  • Made in America, by ladyevil (part 9): "Alfred woke up at five in the morning to the ringing of his phone. 'Hello?' He grumbled, having answered with his eyes closed."

  • The Youngest Barksdale (Iron Chef: Daria The Youngest Barksdale), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 2): "Daria arrived at Lawndale High twenty minutes before homeroom. It was larger than her old school, but then that was a rather small (and exclusive) school."

Don't Try Blocking Paintballs with a Tennis Racket!

Daria's not impressed by Play Tennis Day, but she might have better luck if she stands facing the net. You know, the direction the ball comes in? She's putting in even less effort here than she does in volleyball.

Speaking of low effort Daria, today is the anniversary of the episode "The Daria Hunter" in 1998. While Daria didn't bother to try during the paintball game, she did show a surprising amount of stamina both in walking to see the Great White Shark and in not punching Jordana when she refused to shut up about the lousy tooth.

Tiffany has her tarot set ready for Card Reading Day, but I feel like this alter ego is unrealistic. Not only does it require Tiffany to read, but can you image how long it would take her to tell someone their fortune? The events she'd predict would already have happened by the time she got all the words out.

Today we also celebrate President's Day, or we would if the Holiday Island versions of the day weren't so obnoxious. No wonder the powers that be forced them to share the day.

Cold, Refreshing Feminism!

Ms. Barch is celebrating the anniversary of the publication of the early feminist book The Feminine Mystique on this day in 1963 the only way she knows how: angrily. Of course, ever since the divorce, "angrily" is the only way she knows how to do anything.

Also on this day in 2001, the episode "Fizz Ed" first aired. Although the episode and its portrayal of shady business practices in schools is a little depressing (especially in hindsight), you can't help but be entertained by Ms. Li's absolute breakdown at the end. "Open up, you lousy damn machine! Give up the soda in your bowels!"

It's Not Over Until the Fashionista Sings

Quinn's making a dainty garland for her head so she can sing the lead role in "Madama Butterfly," which premiered on this day in 1904. Mr. DeMartino will be happy to know that the performance is not taking place in the automotive department.

If opera isn't your thing, you could instead enjoy the musical episode "Daria!," which aired on this day in 1999. There aren't any butterflies, but there is a hurricane...kind of.

Loneliness and Candy Made a Good Team!

Looks like Jane and Tom are making very sure that Daria doesn't forget today is Singles Awareness Day. Considering she gets her revenge, I'm not too worried.

While the hair is pretty similar, I really don't think Jesse makes a good match as Howard Stern. For one thing, Howard Stern actually, you know, talks. Still, who would you rather have for World Radio Day? Bing and the Spatula Man?

Speaking of weird names, today is also Get a Different Name Day and you'd better choose one quick before all the good ones are gone. How about Esmerelda? Better follow Jake's wise advice: "You change your name, move to another state, get some ID. It's not too late to start over, Daria, it's not too late! You're still a young man! You don't have to live with your mistakes! Get out while you can!"

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 58): "Vernon Dursley sat in his chair and silently groused. As far as he was concerned, this workshop was a waste of time, the trainer was a twit, and the material he’d been required to read was complete and utter twaddle."

  • Made in America, by ladyevil (part 8): "'Take that, you son of a bitch!' Alfred shouting, firing his gun repeatedly. 'And that! And that! And here’s one for your old man!'"

  • A New Anniversary (Linn's creative thread), by linnofthewoods (COMPLETE!): "One Saturday morning, 15-year-old Rose Norstein warily made her way from her bedroom towards the last place she'd seen her father, Olek: the downstairs master bedroom he shared with her mother, Veronika."

Trent Will Celebrate If/When He Wakes Up

I see Jake is enjoying himself for National Guitar Day, and I really hope he plays better than he cooks. Come to think of it, a good death metal song might be a good way to deal with some of his anger issues. A better catharsis than ranting, anyway.

This is also Make a Friend Day, but notice that it says a friend. Don't go crazy or anything, okay?

I think Quinn has missed the point of Send a Card to a Friend Day. She's supposed to send the cards to a friend, not just receive them. Then again, Quinn is her own best friend, so I guess it all works out. In a shallow sort of way.

Someone should tell Helen and Jake that they can just celebrate Feed the Birds Day with birdseed. I mean, I don't want to mess with it if they're happy, but...yuck.

Today is also The Day the Music Died in 1959, which refers to the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and "The Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson and not, sadly, the breaking up of Mystik Spiral. I'd give them one more fight, tops.

BEEEEEEEP!

I don't know if Upchuck is going to celebrate National Inane Answering Message Day again, but he'll have a hard time topping these hits from the Daria Diaries:

"This is Charles. I can't come to the phone right now, because I am occupado. I could tell you what I am doing, but let's not ruin the mystery. At the tone, leave your name, number, and the time you called, and I will get back to you as soon as I can tear myself away from my life of intrigue, about which I cannot be specific, lest I put both my life and yours in danger."

"No, no...not now, girls! This is Charles Ruttheimer the Third, and you have reached my answering machine...please, ladies, patience!...speak clearly at the tone and...I'm on my way, my dears!...they so hate to be kept waiting...anyway, I'll get back to you as soon as possible...if this is an emergency, well, so is a woman on fire!"

"You have successfully contacted the underground grotto of The Ruttheimer Group, currently engineering our secret plan to achieve world domination by the year 2010. If you would like to know more about our plans to gain global control of mass media, subjugate the military forces of every nation on Earth, and install Charles Ruttheimer the Third as supreme ruler of all humankind, please leave your name and address at the beep, and we will send you an informative brochure and a free bumper sticker."

Either he's way behind schedule on that world domination thing or he took over so seamlessly I didn't even notice. You're doing a pretty crappy job at the moment, Upchuck.

A Snark Universally Acknowledged

Quinn and Daria don't look entirely convinced that this is the right way to wish Pride and Prejudice, published on this day in 1813, a happy anniversary. Honestly, though, with the novel's combination of romance and satire, this seems like the ideal book for the two of them to share an interest in.

Today is also the anniversary of Jackson Pollock's birth on this day in 1912. Jane might celebrate by doing another gigantic art project in his honor...or she may decide that she values sleep and sanity too much to put herself through that again.

Brittany's found a new and exciting way to celebrate Australia Day, which makes me wonder if Lawndale High has a new exchange student. Considering how she reacted to the French student, maybe Brittany's got a thing for a foreign accent.

Some of Us are Bright AND Short!

You might think that the residents of Lawndale are celebrating National Flashlight Day, but you would be wrong. See, they're just being incredibly literal in celebrating Look on the Bright Side Day! Judging by the random angles of all those flashlights, though, it appears that every side is the bright side.

Today is also National Short Girl Appreciation Day, so let's appreciate not only Daria at five foot two inches, but also everyone's favorite Daria blogger, who happens to be the same height!

Ahem. Me. I'm talking about me. Sigh.

Well, That Was Easy!

Looks like the search is already over for Look for an Evergreen Day--turns out it was in the Morgendorffers' garage the whole time. Of course, that tree is most definitely a fake, but the holiday doesn't say the evergreen has to be real, right?

Today is also the anniversary of the movie Titanic, which was released on this day in 1997. Perhaps Mr. O'Neill and Ms. Barch will recreate that iconic scene again, and with any luck they'll both fall into the water and leave the rest of us alone.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 53): "Cuthbert and Daria left the Adventure Park in a good mood. Cuthbert had hugely enjoyed both the arcade and the rides outside."

  • Daria's Great Adventure, by dmsfanman (part 42): "Daria sat with her back to her desk looking out the window. She was sitting in the apartment's office. The sun was just coming up over the river beyond the Headquarters Building."

  • Rude Awakening: A Strange Christmastime Special, by disaac (part 3): "(Back at her apartment, Stacy with a Glass of wine is with Jim with a beer in his hand) STACY: I kinda knew it was going to hell in a handbasket but DAMN!"

Fly Away, Quinn!

Quinn's suited up and ready for Pan American Aviation Day, but as soon as the Fashion Club gets wind of those pants she's going to want to stay up in the air indefinitely. I mean, just look at her thighs! If that doesn't call for immediate dismissal then I don't know what does.

Kevin Would Make a Great Florida Man, Though

Kevin's looking suave for Miami Vice actor Don Johnson's birthday, but I think law enforcement is the last place he needs to be. The thought of Kevin Thompson with a deadly weapon of any kind gives me the screaming terrors.

Today is also National Cupcake Day, so I hope Kevin takes the time to remind Brittany that she's a great hostess...cupcake. Preferably not while holding a loaded gun, though.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 52): "'You! What are you doing here?' I said. The little freak turned away from my precious Duddikins and frowned at me."

  • Doctor Who - Changes in Time and Space, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 4): "Three hours after the Doctor had talked to General Landry, SG1 and the Doctor’s companions were ready to go on their mission."

  • Party at 111 Howard (Iron Chef: Party at Casa Lane), by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 4): "Andrea sneaked out of her house, as she usually did. She then headed towards Howard Drive... She hoped to have some kind of fun."

  • Rude Awakening: A Strange Christmastime Special, by DIsaac (part 2): "(A knock is heard at the door.) DANI: Damn! And here I was not ready to move all day. (Dani gets up and goes to the door)"

  • This Limbo I'm In, by Two-Eyed Charlie (COMPLETE!): "So that’d been that. It wasn’t Jane’s negotiating skills that got the Lane’s out of Lawndale; it was the Morgendorffer’s beating themselves up."

  • Ultra Cola Owns the Cops! (Scenes no Daria fanfic should have), by Two-Eyed Charlie (COMPLETE!): "The doors to Ultra Cola's top-floor board room flew open, and in marched a beaten, bloodied cyborg with coke-bottle lenses covering her eyes."

How About Hot Cocoa Ice Cream?

Mack has had better Ice Cream Days, and I think it's only a matter of time before someone gets an ice cream scoop shoved somewhere uncomfortable. On the one hand, it seems strange to have Ice Cream Day in December when it's cold, but on the other hand any day is good for ice cream as far as I'm concerned.

If you prefer warmer treats in winter, though, then I have good news: today is also National Cocoa Day! It's not just for families of teens during hurricanes anymore.

This Mountain is Reeeeeeally Faaaaaaat....

Tiffany's got her head in the clouds again, but this time literally because it's International Mountain Day! I kind of like the idea of Tiffany having an extreme hobby like mountain climbing. It beats the one-dimensional character she usually ends up as.

Today is also the 75th anniversary of UNICEF's founding in 1946. On the one hand, they've helped countless children all around the world. On the other hand, that didn't stop Eric from (briefly) suing them. Freakin' Eric, am I right?

Fanfic Update!
  • The Background Blues, by welltemperedclavier (COMPLETE!): "The trouble with tragedy, Victor reflected, was that the world kept on going regardless of how he felt about it." (Part 14) (Part 15)

  • Come And Knock On Our Door, by ladyevil (part 5): "'I’m gonna have to see some ID.' The bouncer said. 'The Tremor has a strict policy of only letting people over 18 inside.'"

  • A Daria and Quinn Christmas, by WildDogJJ (COMPLETE!): "Tony has just dropped a major bombshell on everyone. He's just revealed that he sold his house in Virginia and that he's been trying to force Daria out so that he can move into the guest room."

  • Daria Ravenclaw: The Year of the Owl, by Meester_Lee (part 52): "'All right, the adventure park, then!' said Vernon Dursley. 'Everyone buckled in?'"

  • Daria's Song, by GzPnkmn (COMPLETE!): "It wasn't hard to hide what she was doing. Daria barely noticed it herself, but under her long sleeves lay a sight only for her eyes."

  • Mysteries of Lawndale 03: Night of the Coffee House, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 8): "Charles waved to Daria after she had got her food. Daria sighed and came over. 'Have you found any of the people?' she asked."

  • Scenes, by JPAGC (part 2.6): "The ambulance had just gone a few seconds ago, but, for Daria, it was an eternity away."

  • This Limbo I'm In, by Two-Eyed Charlie (part 3): "Mrs. Morgendorffer, right... There was something about getting yelled at by someone else’s parents."

Hey, Clown Daddy!

Happy birthday to Kevin Daniels, who voiced Mack in the third season. I guess not even the voice actors could handle Kevin Thompson for very long.

Today is also the anniversary of the birth of famous clown Emmett Kelly, known for his "sad sack" routine. I guess that, being dead, he can't clown and therefore Mystik Spiral's Freaking Friends song will be put to the test.

She'll Never Hold a Pompom Again

Brittany looks awfully troubled about the anniversary of the movie Edward Scissorhands, which was released on this day in 1990. I suspect she's regretting her decision to let Dr. Shar make a few "little adjustments," especially now that she'll be risking her own life whenever she tries to twirl her hair around her finger.

Today is also Letter Writing Day, another activity that Brittany will find challenging. Not because of the scissor hands, but because of her complete illiteracy.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Background Blues, by welltemperedclavier (parts 9 - 12): "The steady clack-clack-clack of a dozen pairs of hands typing on keyboards filled the AV Club room as Victor and Priscilla waited there for the rest of the plotters." (Part 10) (Part 11) (Part 12)

  • Crossover Lounge (Scenes No Daria fanfic should have: The Closing Walls of Schloss Morgendorffer and Casa Lane), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "In the Green Room of Eternity, where the casts of various fictional shows and written works live in between sets is a series of lounge rooms."

  • A Daria and Quinn Christmas, by WildDogJJ (parts 4 and 5): "Since it's Sunday morning, Jim (like the Italian-American he is) was in the kitchen making the gravy (meat heavy tomato sauce) for dinner. He'd just finished slicing the sausages he'd fried when Jake came in." (Part 5)

  • This Limbo I'm In, by Two-Eyed Charlie (part 2): "Lawndale was a suburb, which meant that it’s 'cultural district' wasn’t so much a spontaneous creation as it was a fenced in zoo; a place where the 'respectable types' figured you could safely put a tattoo parlour without your property values taking a dive from a twenty-story window."

Sweep the Leg, Sandi!

Sandi is practicing her martial arts so she can be ready for International Ninja Day. Or she's preparing to take back control of the Fashion Club by any means necessary. Any. Means. Necessary.

Today is also the anniversary of Walt Disney's birth on this day in 1901. If you want, you could celebrate by taking his cryogenically frozen head to a picnic!

Do Not Celebrate This Holiday Outside

Daria is just relieved to see that the roof is still there for National Roof over Your Head Day. It's not like she can take that kind of thing for granted anymore.

Today is also the anniversary of the birth of Joseph Conrad in 1857. Conrad was the author of Heart of Darkness, which I'm sorry to tell Brittany is not a love story.

Fanfic Update!
  • The Background Blues, by welltemperedclavier (parts 5 - 8): "Bob studied the stack of petitions that Victor had just handed to him." (Part 6) (Part 7) (Part 8)

  • A Daria and Quinn Christmas, by WildDogJJ (part 3): "A visibly worried Quinn is knocking on the door. Quinn: 'Boys, it's been a long time, is everything okay?'"

  • Daria in the Background, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 3): "'Class, I thought today we'd take a break from the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet to discuss the real-life tragedy that happened last night here in Lawndale. Let's share our feelings of violation following the loss of our beloved cybercafé, alt.lawndale.com,' Mr. Timothy O’Neill said to his Sophomore Language Arts class."
